Measuring Progress Objectively

IEPs must include objective means of measuring the child's progress in a special education program. Volume 34 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Section 300.347, "Content of individualized education program," states that an IEP must include:

(2) A statement of measurable annual goals, including benchmarks or short-term objectives, related to (i) Meeting the child’s needs that result from the child’s disability to enable the child to be involved in and progress in the general curriculum . .

[and]

(7) A statement of (i) How the child’s progress toward the annual goals described in paragraph (a)(2) of this section will be measured; . . .

~Wright’s Law 2006

Measuring Progress Objectively Objectives are degrees of educational skills that must be learnedin order to attain the goal. For grading purposes, components three and four are significant.

Criteria for attainment or standard for performance Trials

The third component is criteria for attainment or the standard for performance:

§         at 80% accuracy §         2 times a class period §         8/10 responses §         with no pauses or redundancies §         for at least 5 minutes

Remember: As of this time we are writing our criteria at 80% (required by Special Services).

Measuring Progress Objectively conti. Evaluation Procedure or ‘Schedule of Evaluation’

The fourth component is the evaluation procedure:

Curriculum Based Assessment Data Collection Teacher/Text Tests State Assessments Teacher Observation Work Samples Other: as charted by teacher Other: as charted by teacher assistant

The evaluation procedure is your ‘Schedule of Evaluation’ for the trials you have written. Teachers write their schedule differently. Some may write a ‘Schedule of Evaluation’ daily, weekly, or monthly.

Purposes

Think of the ‘Grading Rubric’ as another tool to collect, record, present and report data for student progression.

It should be used as a way to maintain consistency across grading, teachers and schools.
