The Banquet of Seven Suns

The preparations for the Empire's biggest culinary event have begun: the Banquet of Seven Suns, which the Emperor holds every four years. No other location than the Inn of Seven Suns would be appropriate for such a spectacle. More than a tousand years of tradi-tion and the beautiful ancient building take the participants' breath away.

Theater, music and dance are an important part of the festival, but the competition for the Banquet is the main attraction. Only the most exquisite dishes are suitable for the feast.

You are fearless heroes on your way to win the finest ingredients from cruel monsters. Whether it be the pudding from slime monsters or the spices from fox demons' gardens, no ingredients to achieve the victory are easy to come by.

The goal of every participant is to cook the most exquisite delicacies in one day. The Emperor himself will decide who is both the bravest warrior and the best cook in his realm. Nume-rous companions help the participants, if their motives match. They may be looking for honor through feats of strength, greedy for forgotten knowledge, or looking to settle an old score.

Choose your companions wisely, because every one of them has different abilities and talents. A good preparation and assignment of tasks and equipment are important to endure the dangerous journey and be victorious in the end.

The people are curious to see if any group will be lucky enough to cook the legendary Seven Season Soup.legend has it that if someone ma-nages to cook this masterly dish, the Empire will have four fertile and untroubled years.

Don't waste any more time; the Banquet of Seven Suns is apporaching!

Object of the GameThe object of the game is to win ingredients and cook dishes with them. The Emperor will award victory points for the dishes at the end of the game. The player with the most victory points wins the Banquet of Seven Suns!

Every player starts with a hero as alter ego and first completes their group by recruiting companions. Equipped with the right items the objective is to defeat monsters to win ingre-dients and cook the dishes with them.

1. Draw an event card At the beginning of every player's turn, the play-er draws a card from the event stack and reads it aloud. The card is placed on a free spot on the event board and the event pile is created. Event pile creation Put the items and ingredients of the reward under the card and KAN on top of it.

If the event is a monster event, all listed monsters are also placed under the card. To save time, you can also put the ingredients from every monster under the card. The ingre-dients are listed as loot on each monster card. (see page 8 for an event pile example). Event tokens If an event card mentions a specific terrain, the connection is shown with the event tokens. Do this of course only, when the terrain is already placed (see page 8 for an event tokens example). • Card is triggered immediately Carry out all actions described on the card, and then discard the event card.

• Meet the requirements Some events let you decide whether to trigger them or not, for example by paying costs or when your group is on a specific terrain in the right phase.

Discard the travel token in your action phase to move your group token to an adjacent terrain. This does not use an action, but it works like the action movement and can be used in addition to it, or when movement is otherwise not possible.

Means of transport This terrain actions allow you to fast travel from one terrain to another (example: means of transport). Cooking Station Terrains and events that allow you to cook are marked with the cooking symbol (page 12 example: cooking). Trading Guild The Trading Guild buys and sells items and ingredients. Terrains that allow you to trade with members of the guild are marked with the trading symbol. Whenever a player's group is on a terrain with the guild symbol the player can trade with a member of the guild. Depending on the terrain you could be haggling with another trader (see Trading Guild card). Whenever a terrain card with the guild symbol is placed, draw 2 items and place them face up on the trading guild.

‣ The traders buy items and ingredients for the number of colored coins. Put sold cards on the guild card. These cards can be bought by every group on a terrain with the guild sym-bol. The price to buy a card is the number of the colored coins added to the number of grayed-out coins.

Equipment optionsHeroes and Companions have equipment options, which allow them to be outfitted with weapons, armor and other useful things.

Exactly one item can be equipped for every equipment option. Some fighters have the same symbol twice and can equip two items of the same category (example: equipment).

Equip group membersAs soon as you get items, you take the cards in your hand. Now you can equip your group members. Equipping does not count as an action. You can also equip items before a fight, when you choose to consume dishes.

Take off itemsThe protagonists get attached to their treasures very fast and because of that it is not possible to trade items with other group members or take the items back to your hand. The only pos-sible way to discard items is to sell them to the trading guild. So choose wisely which item you equip to your group members.

Light itemsThese items are simple and easily used by everybody (they require no equipment option). Your group members can be equipped with any number of light items in addition to their equipment options.

Use ItemsWeapons increase the damage dealt by your group members, give them special attacks, or provide an attack bonus. Armor protects your fighters from wounds. Instruments enhance the fighting abilities of your whole group and scrolls grant special abilities.

Many items have token abilities [T]. Some items have passive abilities that are always active (You can find further information about token-abilities and passive abilities in the chapter Fight on page 14).

[T] Sneaky: Put the fighters token on another fighter. Attacks against this fighter cause 2 extra wounds, if the fighter has not been activated in this fight round.

Fight

Cooking

Your group can only participate in one fight during each of your turns. You can fight in the following situations: monster batttle, duel or the activation of an event.

Duel with another player's group:• you choose the action duel in your action phase

and you fight against another player's group.

• another player challenges your group to a duel.

• an event is triggered that causes a duel bet-ween two players. This is also possible if the two groups are not on the same terrain.

Monster encounters happen when:• they are part of a recruitment event.

• an event gives you the choice to trigger a monster event (example: Bossmonster).

• when your group is on a terrain with an active monster encounter at the end of your action phase (example: Monster encounter).

Example: Boss monsterBoss monsters are special events, that can be triggered on a specific terrain. If they are de-feated, the card is turned around and a special effect takes place. If your group is defeated, they are treated like an active monster encoun-ter on the stated terrain type.

Example: CookingDiscard Herbs & Spices and Crab Meat with a cooking actions and take the Grilled Snapper into your hand.

Who plays the monster group? When your group fights against a monster group, the player on your right controls the monsters in the fight. Monsters are dangerous and battle-hardened creatures, and that is the reason other players can give hints and suggestions that give the monster group an advantage in the fight.

hrooms and flowers. Monsters seem to nourish and

Dishes and consumption bonusThe dishes you cook on your journey are grand creations that possess their own magic. After being consumed, they award you with incredible abilities for a short time.

To use a dish, you choose a group member and put the dish next to the fighter's card. The fighter gets the consumption bonus for the duration of the fight. Discard the dish card at the end of the fight.

Using dishes in a duelAt the beginning of a duel, the attacker has to choose if he or she uses a dish. After that, the defender chooses.

Using dishes against monstersYou can also choose to consume a dish with a group member when your group fights against a monster. If you are playing the role of a monster group, you cannot use a dish from your hand for the monsters.

One dish for each groupIn every fight, each group can only consume one dish.

Example: dishes & consumption bonusYou attack another player and want to use the consumption bonus of the Mushroom Pan.

You choose your fighter Mamoru. For the duration of the fight, his attacks hit as if all enemies had only a Defence of 5.

Your opponent can also consume a dish with a fighter now.

Activation of Fighters

Who starts the fight? In a monster encounter, the monster group has the first activation (first action). In a duel, the initiator of the duel gets the first activation.

Fight turns and activationA fight is divided into fight turns. All heroes, companions and monsters involved in a fight are called fighters. As soon as a fighter gets activated (push the card up a little bit to sym-bolize this), you can use its abilities and attack with it. The players take turns with the activation, until all fighters on both sides have been activated once. When all fighters have been activated once, the fight turn ends and a new one begins.

First strike tokenIf you have the first strike token, you always have the first activation in a fight (see example Preparation page 9).

Useless knowledge:The first strike token shows "Charge-Imoto", the first strike oni.

Timo has Suzume and Haruko in his group. He attacks a Jorogumo. The Jorogumo is activated first, then Timo can choose to activate Suzume and Haruko. The Jorogumo is activated first in the second fight turn.

If Timo has the first strike token, he can activate Suzume or Haruko first, and then the Jorogumo activates and is then followed up by Timo's other fighter. The Jorogumo starts on turn 2, because fighters of opposite side are always activated in alternating order.

Timo attacks Beniko with Suzumes Santoku Knife. He rolls the two dice and gets a 5 and a 3. This gives an added result of 8. With the passive ability All-round Knife Suzume's at-tack gets a hit bonus of 2. The result of the hit roll equals 10 and hits Beniko, because she has a defence of 10.

Example: token abilitiesHeroes and companions use tokens. They are used for their abilities. One side has a picture and the other side has the name of the group member on it.

Hit Me: You can pay 1 KAN when you activate Fukita to put his token on himself.[T] Drunken Slash: Put Fukita‘s token on him. If the token was there before Fukita causes 2 extra wounds and remove his token von him.

hit bonus/hit penaltyWhen your fighter receives a hit bonus, you add all the hit bonuses to the roll. Hit penalties are subtracted from the roll.

Example: hit roll

You choose the Fledder as a target for your attack. Roll 2 of the 8-sided dice and add the numbers together. If the result is 9 or higher the attack hits.

Actions of Fighters

When you activate a fighter, you can make the following actions with it:

1. Use a token ability2. Attack

Group members of player groups have token abilities and passive abilities. Monsters only have passive abilities.

Token abilitiesThis abilities are marked with [T]. Every fighter in your group can use a token ability during its activation. You can only use a token ability of the fighter or a token ability of an equipped item (page 15 example: token abilities).

Passive abilitiesOther abilities (without [T]) are passive abilities. All passive abilities of a fighter are active at all times. The same is true for passive abilities of equipped items.

AttackChoose targetTo perform a normal attack you choose an enemy fighter as a target. State the target to the other players.

Attack roll, Defence and HITsRoll the two D8 and add the numbers together. Take note how many HITs (number 8) you scored. If the result is higher than the defence (DEF) of the target the attack hits.

14 15

Example: token abilities

Timo activates Yuuka. Now he can use her token ability. If he wants to use Nimble Hands he has to put her token on a fighter and then she can attack that fighter twice.

Attack against all enemiesTo make an attack against all enemies, you roll a single hit roll and compare it with the defence (DEF) of all enemies. All hits cause wounds using the rules of a normal attack.

Example: Attack against all enemies

Tina fights a Death Nectar, Daikon and a Kinoko with Nanami.

To attack all enemy fighters with the ability Whriling Blade of the Naginata, Tina has to use Nanami's token ability in one turn and put her token on it. In this case, only a normal attack can be made afterward.

In Nanamis activation in the next turn, Tina uses the abi-lity Whirling Blade a second time, removes the token from Nanami and attacks all enemies with her attack.

Tina rolls and the dice roll is 7. Nanami hits the Death Nectar and the Daikon, but misses the Kinoko.

[T] Whirling Blade: Put the fighters token on this card. If the token was already on this card, remove it and the fighters next attack affects all enemy fighters.

Yumi

[T] Finisher: Put the fighter‘s token on a fighter with at least one wound. Attacks with the Assassins Blade against this fighter cause 2 extra wounds.

Assassin‘s BLade

To use Piercing Force, Timo has to put Yuuka's token on the Yumi and Yuuka's attack ignores armor.

The ability Finisher of the Assasin's Blade and Yuuka's Nimble Hands are both applied when her token is on another fighter and she attacks it with the blade.

Fukita's passive ability Hit Me allows you to pay 1 KAN everytime you activate him and put his token on him. His token ability Drunken Slash can then be used imme-diately to cause 2 extra wounds.

16 17

Example ChainmailKaede has DEF 9. The Chainmail puts her DEF to 9, so it stays the same. When she is equip-ped with Leather Armor her DEF increases to 10 instead.

Damage and woundsDamage valueAn attack uses the damage value of the fighter or the damage value of an equipped weapon. The damage value of the weapon replaces the damage value of the fighter and is not added to it.

HITs (every die that shows an 8)Every HIT causes an extra wound.

WoundsWhen an attack is successful, it will cause wounds equal to the damage value plus the amount of extra wounds (every HIT also cau-ses an extra wound).

Damage value + extra wounds = wounds

Passive ability (armor)Some fighters and items have passive abilities, which reduce the number of wounds a fighter gets. They are marked with "armor".

Poison dart: The fighters HITs cause 2 extra wounds.

Blow Pipe

Example: wounds

Tina attacks Yuuka with Benikos Blow Pipe. She rolls two 8s (2 HITs). The Blow Pipe has a damage value of 2. The 2 HITs cause 4 extra wounds, thanks to the Poison Dart passive ability. She inflicts 6 wounds on Yuuka. Ouch.

Ignores armorSometimes an attack will hit in a spot and brings the pain. Natural plating or armor do not protect against these.

The amount of wounds of an ability that igno-res armor is not affected by passive abilities (armor).

Bone Plated (armor): Attacks cause at most 2 wounds against Minogame.Loot: Steak

Minogame

55

Example: Armor ability

When an attack with 3 da-mage hits the Minogame it only gets 2 wounds, thanks to the Bone Plated ability.

Example: Ignores armor

Timo attacks a Minogame with Suzume. The hit roll is 9 (a HIT and a 1). Suzu-me's damage value is 2, plus the HIT, which equals 3. But the Minogame only receives 2 wounds because of Bone Plated. Now Yuuka attacks with

[T] Piercing Force: Put the fighters token on this

card. As long as the token lies here the attacks of the

fighter ignore armor.

Yumi

her Yumi and hits with a hit roll of 5 and 1. The damage value of the weapon is 3 and ignores armor, because Yuuka's token is on the Yumi. The Minogame gets 3 wounds and is disabled.

Armor and defence (DEF)You can find a DEF value on armor and heavy armor. This value replaces the DEF value of your groupmember.

Modified Defence: The fighters defence is now 7. Full plate (armor): The fighter receives two wounds less from attacks.

Samurai Armor 7Example Samurai Armor

Takeo has DEF 8. The Sa-murai Armor decreases his DEF to 7. Now he is easier to hit, but 2 wounds are preventedfrom every attack against him.

16 17

Disabled group membersA fighter is disabled when the number of wounds are equal to the vitality (VIT) of the fighter. The fighter cannot be activated and token and passive abilities cannot be used. To indicate that a fighter is disabled, turn the fighter's card around.

Disabled monsters and lootWhen your group is in a fight with a monster and one of them is disabled, you can immedi-ately take the monster's loot and take it into your hand. The monster's wounds are put back in the supply and the monster is discarded.

End of the fight and rewardA fight continues until all fighters on one side are disabled.

Win a duelWhen you win against another player group in a duel, you can draw a random card fom your opponent's hand and take it into your hand. You also get half of the KAN of the loser (rounded up).

The group token of the loser is put on the Inn of Seven Suns.

Win against monstersWinning against a monster group lets you take the reward indicated on the event and all KAN on the event, which was stolen by the monsters (see: Lose against monsters).

Lose against monstersWhen you lose against monsters, put half your KAN (rounded up) on the monster event. Your group token is put on the Inn of Seven Suns.

Wounds on fightersPeople help you out everywhere. The populati-on will support you with food, beverages and, if need be, bandages or ointments.

Wounds on heroes and companionsAll wounds on heroes and companions are removed at the end of a fight. Disabled fighters are turned around and are ready to fight again.

Monsters with woundsWounds of monsters are not removed. When they are discarded or defeated, the wounds go back into the supply.

The Banquet of Seven Suns is a festival that lasts for one day. This is the reason your group has not an unlimited amount of time to arm group members to the teeth and beat up monsters.

Game End

Last event card drawnThe Emperor calls all to the banquet, and the day comes to an end. Your group hurries to the Inn of Seven Suns and presents the Emperor the multiple course meal.

The end of the game is near when a player has drawn the last event card. Every player has one last turn, and then the winner is deter-mined. Put all your group markers on the Inn of Seven Suns and remove all wounds from your group members.

Victory pointsThe dishes in your hand are worth victory points (VP). The Emperor will only taste the dish of a group once and so every dish rewards VP only once. Keep multiple copies of dishes in your hand, if a deciding duel is necessary. The player with the most VP wins.

Deciding DuelIn the case of a tie, the groups of the players with the highest amount of VP fight in a final duel. This duel uses the normal rules for duels, with the exception that more than two groups can participate. All players roll for the first strike token. The player with the highest result gets the first strike token (re-roll a tie) and has the first activation. The players then take turns clockwise. The winner of the fight wins the game.

Don't forget to consume the remaining dishes!

Example: determine the winner

Timo and Tina reached the end of the game and determine the winner.

Timo has the Grilled Snapper (4 VP), Spicy Noodle Soup (3 VP) and Godlike Roast (5 VP).Tina has 2 x Fledder Skewers (3 VP), Little Black Soup (3VP) and the Seven Season Soup (7VP).The two copies of Fledder Skewers only give her 3 VP once.Timo has 12 VP und Tina has 13 VP. So Tina is the winner!

The Seven Season SoupEvery rival at the Banquet of Seven Suns dreams about cooking the legendary Seven Season Soup. The ingredients are very hard to get, and also have to be prepared in the lava heat of a volcano. Only this way can all the flavors develop and the magical effects be achieved when consuming the dish.

According to eyewitness records, the soup makes the skin rock solid and even the most brutal attacks are rendered ineffective. An old legend tells that if a group of heroes is able to prepare the soup and serve it to the Emperor at the banquet, the land will thrive for four fertile years. The Emperor and the population reward the cooks with appreciation and trea-sures defying imagination.

Thank youThe author thanks all test players and proof readers, especially Tina Täubert, the project would not have been possible without her.

20 21

Seven Season Soup takes place in a crazy world, where everything revolves around food. But the population is plagued by monsters time and time again. So the Emperor created the Banquet of Seven Suns, a festival, that should solve this problem through the valor of the participants.

Fearless cooking and fighting experts go on the hunt for the monsters of the Empire to put an end to their exploits. Here we want to present some of these protagonists.

20 21

Kaede

Kaede is a noble from the house Itomi, who has brought ar-chery to perfection. She is as focused on her target with the bow as she is focused on winning the banquet. When the Emperor proclaimed the Banquet of Seven Suns, she clearly had to use her abilities to show the Emperor that a woman can be a proficient warrior as any man can be.

Mamoru

Mamoru is a monk from the temple of unity. He has learned much about martial arts, exquisite wine, and the preparation of delicious food during his life. To honor his cultural legacy, he gladly fol-lowed the Emperor's call to the Banquet of Seven Suns. His fighting experience and his hunger will clear the way for his victory.

Takeo

The rules of the Banquet of Seven Suns dictate that no-one in the direct service of the Emperor can participate in the competition. This is the reason Takeo withdrew from his posi-tion in the Emperor's bodyguard and attended as a warrior without a master. For seven generation it has been tradition in his family to participate in the banquet. This was much easier for Takeo's ancestors, because they were farmers and, in this regard, no followers of the Emperor's court. This changed when Takeo's father was made a bodyguard after a heroic deed. This way his son was the first in the family to be born into this class. Confident of victory, the young warrior confronts unknown dangers lurking on the way. He does it all for the honor of his family and with the hope of getting back his position after the work is done.

Suzume

Suzume grew up in the streets of the Emperial Capital and her talent made her a master thief over the years. Now she is known to the whole country as "the Sparrow". She will par-ticipate in the Banquet of Seven Suns together with her loyal companion Hamlet. Plan A is to win. If plan B is applied, she will get the prize money anyway.

22 23

Haruko

Haruko is an adventurous fisher boy. You can usually find him catching crabs at the Snapper Coast. Despite his youth, he is considered an expert in the preparation of gastrono-mic seafood specialities.

Aya

Aya is a gifted musician. She is able to charm a whole crowd with her tunes. But behind the mask of a virtuous musician hides a dexterous and deceitful assassin.

Osamu

An old veteran in heavy armor, he has been travelling the land and hunting monsters for some time now. The people call him Osamu, the judge of merciless punish-ment. If you have a pure conscience, he might just join your group.

Yuuka

Yuuka, a gifted cook, is always searching. She misses no oppor-tunity to hoard new cooking recipes and utensils. Don’t mess with her, because her skills with the kitchen knife can outdo even agile fighters.

Beniko

Beniko is a Ninja on a personal vendetta. Support her and she will stand by your side. Oppose her and she will have a poi-soned blade ready for each of your followers.

Shiori

Fukita

Even in a world like the one in Seven Season Soup, certain people stand out with exceptional behavior. An example of this is Fukita, a musician by his own statement. People throw mo-ney at him and women flock to him. He is proof that bumming around can have an appeal in such a structured society.
