Order of Indexing Units
General rule
- names of businesses, except those
containing the full name of an individual, are
indexed as they are.

- If the full name of an individual appears in a
business name, the units in the individuals
name are transposed.

Order of Indexing Unit
- A business name containing a title followed by asingle given name, a surname, or a coined nameis indexed as written. It the title is abbreviated, it
is indexed spelled out.

Articles, Prepositions and Conjunctions
- English articles, prepositions and conjunctions
in a business name are generally not
considered to be indexing units.
- They are enclosed in parentheses ( ) to set
them off from the indexing units

- The word The, when appearing as the first
word in a business name, is place at the end
of the name and is enclosed in parentheses ( ).

- Exception: when a preposition is the first word in abusiness name, the preposition is considered to be thefirst indexing unit. In addition, when a word that isnormally classified as a preposition is used as a
modifying word or as part of a compound name, thatword is considered to be an indexing unit.

Single Letters
- Two or more single letters, each letter is considered tobe a separate indexing unit, no matter whether theletters are written separately or are written together.Punctuation ( , , ) of the letters is also immaterial.

Hyphened Business Names
- When two or more initials, words, names, wordsubstitutes, or coined words in a business nameare joined by a hyphen, the hyphen is disregardedand each part of the name considered to be aseparate indexing unit.

Articles, prepositions ( in, at, with, on, etc.) andconjunctions that are joined to other words byhyphens also follow this rule: each is a separate

Hyphened Business Names
When a hyphen joins two parts of a single word,both parts are considered together as on indexingunit.

Numbers and Symbols in Business
Names
- Numbers and symbols within a business name
are spelled out.
- The complete number is considered to be oneword.
- If the number is accompanied by a symbol,
the symbol is considered separately as a word.
- Four-place numbers are expressed in
hundreds, not in thousands.

Possessives
- When a word contains an apostrophe showingpossession, all of the word up to theapostrophe is considered. If an s follows the
apostrophe, the s is disregarded with aparentheses.
