Last year’s bingo event was a sellout crowd so plan to get there early to avoid any line up. The doors will open at 5:30 pm to allow ample time for you to get your bingo cards and ink daubers, or a bite to eat before the games begin. Warm-up games will begin at 6:30 pm and the regular session games will start at 7:00 pm. There will be a refreshment bar with good food, soft drinks and cof- fee available to satisfy your game-time appetite. There will be several new games this year and the games will end around 9:30 pm, so you will have plenty of time to get home and watch the New Year celebrations on TV or head out to another party. Everyone is welcome and children under 18 can play if accompanied by a parent or an adult guardian. The more cards you play the better your chances of win- ning. The amount of cash prizes are determined by the number of game cards sold, so the more people that play the larger the cash prizes. Bring your family and join your friends for a fun evening of BINGO. GHCC AND THE SCOUTS JOIN FORCES

By Chuck Strahm

The Greater Hansville Community Center officially has become the charter organization for the local Scout troops. The Kingston VFW was previously the charter organization

but when that branch of the VFW moved to Poulsbo, the Scouts starting looking for a new group closer to home.

GHCC gladly accepted the challenge and the Board approved the union. At the November Board meeting, all the paperwork was signed and we are proud to become a BSA charter organization. The scouts brought a lot of the kids to the meeting to celebrate the occasion. There were Scouts from 8 to 17 years old and each of the boys introduced themselves and told us their favorite food; they liked everything from pancakes to steaks, just like the rest of us. All of us at GHCC are looking forward to working together with the Scout troops and getting to know how we can help each other.

NEIGHBOR’S LUNCH

The sound of children’s voices singing Christmas Carols often brings fond memories of past times and may bring us back to our own childhood experiences. This year we

will again have the Kids Quilt Quire perform at Neighbor’s Lunch. These eight small children are home schooled and practice their singing while their mothers quilt throughout the year.

You are welcome to join us for Neighbors Lunch, a program open to anyone who wants to sit down and have a meal with people of the community. It meets the third Wednesday of every month except for June, July and August. The next lunch will be at noon on December 16. The cost is $6 for a soup and sandwich. Please contact Judy Hutchinson at 638-2871 if you are coming so we have a plate reserved for you. Meanwhile, Happy Holidays!

AUTHOR EVENT AT GHCC

The Memoir and Fiction Writing Group in Hansville has published an anthology and we have arranged an AUTHOR EVENT on Sunday, December 6, from 2:00 -

4:00 pm.

Along with 13 of the 16 authors of STORIES FROM THE HANS-VILLE WRITING GROUP 2015, there will be several other authors such as A.C. Fuller, Mary Van Valkenberg, H.M. Jones, Betty Alder, Wendy Hinman, and the Hansville Historical Society. Come join us and hear the authors tell about their books (and maybe pick up some Christmas gifts).

HANSVILLE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Are people interested in the history of our area? Defi-nitely YES, judging the answer by the sale of our book “People of North Kitsap Peninsula”. In less than one

month from printing date, the Hansville Historical Society sold all of the 500 copies printed in October. I would say that dem-onstrates quite an interest in the roots of our people of the area. If you did not get a copy, the Society is considering a rapid re-print. If you want to get on the list to be informed when the new edition is available, please email [email protected] with your name and contact information.

Given this interest, the Society is eager to make our archi-val materials available for public viewing. We are in need of a place to do this and wonder if there is anyone who could help us locate a place that could be used for such purposes. One idea is to use the income from the above book sales as a match for a grantmaker’s funding, making this dream come true. However, we need property and ideally a structure that it warm and dry to store and display our treasures. Does any-one out there share this vision?

The Hansville Historical Society meets at the Greater Hansville Community Center on the third Friday of each month. The next meeting will be on December 18 at 10 am. Each month we present a program of historical interest to the community. If you have questions about any of the above, contact Lois Lee at 638-1973.

EGLON NEWS

It’s my favorite time of year with all the hustle and bustle, joyous deco-rations and the uplifted, kind spirit that seems to settle in among most humans. Eglon is getting ready for its joyous celebrations and we want

you to join us. Don’t miss out on the treasured Eglon Holiday Gift and Bake Sale at the Schoolhouse on Saturday, December from 9 am to 4 pm. Join us for a cup of old-fashioned coffee and a hot-out-of-the-oven, cinnamon roll. Then spend a moment in time shopping for unique handcrafted decora-tions, gifts, Eglon cards, festive greenery and homemade baked goods. This is a shout out to all Eglon Bakers as we need your help! Start planning right away and remember that the County requires all items to be wrapped prior to delivery at the Schoolhouse that morning. Last year we had almost sold out of everything by 1:00, so we’re hoping for a few more bakers to step up so we can keep the tables full until our closing at 4 pm. Thanks to the gener-osity of Eglon neighbors, the proceeds from this event help to support local scholarships and the maintenance of our historic Schoolhouse.

But that’s not all, on Saturday, December 12 at 7 pm the Schoolhouse will be transformed into a winter wonderland and the children will take over the stage. They will lift your holiday spirit with joyous voices, talented musi-cal numbers, a short holiday play and lots of community caroling. Holiday snacks and Christmas punch will fill the tables for a joyous time of visiting following the program. If Mom has some goodies hidden away we’d love to share them with the neighbors that night. We’ve even heard whisper that Santa might have time to stop by and wish us all a Merry Christmas! (Remem-ber parents - please bring along a small gift for your little ones, wrapped, and clearly marked with their first and last name. Santa’s helper will be standing by the door to collect them. If you need any help, contact Jackie Holbrook at 638-1949.) For this to be a super, super joyous evening we need the help of lots of Eglon children and their friends that morning from 10 am to 12 am for snowflake creating, paper chain stringing, and a quick play rehearsal.

Thankful doesn’t adequately describe how we feel about the special people who helped with our Candlelight Thanksgiving Potluck in November. If you should come upon one of these neighbors, pat them on the back and let them know how much they are appreciated. A special thank you goes out to the ladies who baked the turkeys, ham and potatoes; Sherry Cordiner, Dana Dukes, Pat DuVall and Juli Swanberg. With the addition of each family favor-ite that was brought to the table, many of us left feeling like this meal was the best Thanksgiviing Dinner any of us had every had! One last thank you goes out to Russ Cordiner, Gene DuVall and Don Swanberg who have volunteered to act as our newly formed Schoolhouse Maintenance Committee! May all your holiday celebrations be memorable.

Endowment Fund Update | By Lois Lee

GREATER HANSVILLECOMMUNITY CENTER

At year’s end 2014, the Greater Hansville Community Center Endowment fund had reached its first goal of $100,000 and we

want to thank those who contributed to the suc-cess of this first campaign. We want to bring you up to date with our progress.

After researching multiple local professional investment firms, we invited a number of them to submit proposals to manage our funds. Sev-eral firms responded with proposals and final-ists were interviewed. After research and inter-views, the Endowment Fund Advisory Com-mittee along with the GHCC Board of Directors selected the Cascade Group at Morgan Stanley in Silverdale as managers of the fund. Invest-ments began in April 2015. The fund is moni-tored regularly by the Board and the Endow-ment Fund Advisory Committee.

We continue working to grow the Endowment Fund through new donors and additional con-tributions. We appreciate those whose gener-ous contributions have helped us successfully reach this milestone and those who continue to help us grow through regular contributions. There are several ways to participate in the long term future of the Greater Hansville Community Center by making contributions to the Endow-ment. Please contact Lois Lee at 638-1973 for more information.

SHORE FRIENDLY KITSAPAn Unique Opportunity for Waterfront Homeowners

By Lou Foritano

Recent evening programs at the Greater Hansville Com-munity Center (GHCC) described the current quality of the waters of Puget Sound and highlighted the interre-

lationship between our beautiful natural resource and active shoreline management.

A major goal we all share is the protection of marine habitat for our many forms of recreation: beach walks, fishing, crabbing, shellfish harvesting, and observing the waters and wildlife now and for future generations. Futurewise, Sea Grant, WSU Extension and Kitsap County are partners in a new program to enlist waterfront homeowners with “armored bulkheads” (exp. large rock, wood pilings, concrete, combinations thereof) to assess the potential for their removal if not required for property protection and/or replacement with “soft shore stabilization” (exp. engineered stabilized large logs, rocks, vegetation, gravel). There are aesthetically appealing options which can provide improved beach access and comparable property protection.

This program is voluntary and free to selected homeowners who will receive an on-site visit and comprehensive geological assessment from professionals funded by an EPA grant through an agreement with the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife to determine suitability for further assistance, cost-share grants and addressing the permit process.

Several projects are taking place in the surrounding counties of Puget Sound with well documented mutual benefits to the shoreline habitat health and the homeowners as well as ultimately promoting the recovery of salmon and orcas.

For information or to schedule a visit, please call “KitsapOne” at (360) 337-5777 or email [email protected]. Also you are welcome to call me as a local “Shore Friendly” program volunteer advisor on (360) 638-1853.

Please join us on Saturday, December 12th from 10 am – 4 pm for a unique tour of our local lighthouse at this special time of year. HANSVILLE GREENWAY UPDATE

With the end of Fall and the beginning of Winter just a few weeks away, it is still a great time to take a walk through the Greenway. The trails are

in better shape to enjoy your trek without walking through a lot of mud thanks to the good work done by volunteers this past Sum-mer and Fall. Drainage has been improved and the portion of the trail that was called the “slippery slope” between marker posts 15 and 16 has a new Geo-block grid system installed that will eliminate the muddy slipping and sliding. The volunteer stewards always send out a report after their walk through the trail system. They are usually pretty brief, reporting on any maintenance projects that may be needed and how many people or animals they may have seen. However, some get very creative with their report. Here’s one you may enjoy. It made me laugh!

“At noon I rolled up to the great orange gate of the Wooded Kingdom off Hansville Road. Pausing briefly. I made an offering of chain saw oil to the god Stihl that I would not have to labor long. Walking the path to my labors I found much foreboding from twiggy blow downs which gave me fear that my supplication was in vain.

Alas I arrived to find that the god Stihl had ignored my request and my 10 inch vexatious tree was still blocking my path. Resigned, I set to work with Bull, my trusty hand saw. As I took the first few strokes much groaning and cracking ensued. Each stroke created such noise that I wondered what devil might be encased in such a trunk. Finally about a third way through, the trunk split with great noise and force of movement. I was left with two lesser trunks which sawed with ease. The god Stihl works in strange ways. Having seen neither animal nor human, I retired in search of a glass of refreshing mead having but a mere hour of toil. Your scribe, Dennis the Old.”

The next meeting of the Greenway Association is our annual membership meeting and election of officers, 7 pm, December 3rd at the Community Cen-ter at Buck Lake Park. You can meet Dennis the Old and some of the other volunteers. Everyone is welcome.

You can also help with the projects with a tax deductible donation to the Gre-enway through the Greater Hansville Community Center. Remember, please keep your pets on leash and pick up after them, and motorized vehicles are prohibited on the Greenway.

As the weather of the changing season drives us indoors, it’s a great time to sit down with a cup of your favorite warming beverage and get cozy with a good book. Just in time for the holidays, I’ve dis-

covered another valuable addition to my library. Focusing on Northwest, Real Gardens Grow Natives by landscape designer Eileen M. Stark draws the reader in with user-friendly layout and 200 full-color photographs.

It’s not just a pretty book. The first half of the 300 hundred pages help the reader design, plant and enjoy a Northwest native garden. I appreciate Stark’s inclusion of simple planting plans as well as propagation methods the home gardener can use to increase their inventory of plants. The balance of the book is devoted to 100 native plants for the garden. Have you ever searched through an entire book looking for a plant that would do well under specific conditions? You’ll appreciate Stark’s grouping of the native plants by their basic light needs. In addition to the expected listing of characteristics, each plant description includes how to propagate as well as its benefits to wildlife.

I will often judge a book, not by its cover, but by its appendices and index. I was not disappointed. Appendix A is a quick plant guide for specific situ-ations such as plants for hedgerows or plants for erosion control. The refer-ences listed in Appendix B are a testament to the amount of research that went into this simple guide. And the comprehensive six-page index from Abies amabilis to yellow-twig dogwood provides a clear map to the ques-tions you want answered.

Real Gardens Grow Natives, published by Skipstone, an imprint of Moun-taineers Books, Seattle.

Brew that warm winter drink, grab a sheet of graph paper, and plan a Northwest native garden. For some inspiring ideas, take a stroll through the Buck Lake Native Plant Garden right here in Hansville.

SCAMS TO AVOIDBy Art Ellison

ABE Computer Consultants, LLC

Over the last couple of years, I have men-tioned many kinds of scams to avoid. I’m still called by people who have

fallen for them, though. Guess it’s time to revisit this subject:

1. Social Security Scam: Protect your social security number! In the wronghands, some-one can create their own account using your number. So, if you are on a website or the phone and you are asked for your social se-curity number, ask yourself--just why do the people need it--and do you trust them?

2. Fake Funeral Invitations: These consist of fake notifications--usually there is a link in the mail for you to click. Don’t do it! You will probably end up with some nasty stuff on your computer.

3. Work at Home Scams: Sure, some extra money would be nice. This is not the way to get it. You’ll end up giving the scammers your personal information to “sign up” for the work. They might even ask you to send them money for your training materials.

4. Lottery/Sweepstakes Scams: These people will probably ask you for money to “process” your prize. Keep the money in your pocket. You didn’t win anything!

5. Fake Online Pharmacies: Sure, it would be great to get your meds at a reasonable price. Be aware that many of these pharmacies are scams. They get your money and you don’t get your drugs.

I’ll list more of these on my website, as space here is limited.

FREE INCOME TAX PREPARATIONBy Edward A Ramey

Local Coordinator for AARP Tax Aide at Martha and Mary in Poulsbo

From January to April 2016, volunteers will again be pre-paring tax returns for most people who need assistance. In North Kitsap, we have two sites that will be convenient

for those living in the Poulsbo, Kingston and Hansville areas. The AARP Tax Aide program will be at Martha and Mary Nurs-ing Health and Rehabilitation Center in Poulsbo on Thursdays from 1:00 to 5:00 pm and on Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm from February 4 through April 16. The Little Bos-ton site is sponsored by the S’Klallam Tribe and opens January 18 on Mondays and Tuesdays from 1:00 to 5:00 pm at the Elder Center (31948 Little Boston Rd NE) and continues through April 18. The usual April 15 deadline is postponed to the following

Monday due to a holiday in Washington DC.

These programs depend upon trained volunteers to do the income tax preparation using software and training provided through the IRS and sponsoring agencies. We are looking for a few good volunteers who have computer literacy and are familiar with at least some of the schedules associated with the 1040 long form. Training will be provided in Little Boston starting the week of December 7 and continuing the first two weeks of January. Contact Susie Edwards at 360-297-4545 or [email protected] if you might be interested in volunteer-ing. Your time commitment will involve training, home study, a certification exam and two days per week of volunteer tax preparation during the tax season (January 18 through April 18, 2016). Volunteers actually have fun and enjoy helping oth-ers. Your expenses for travel will be paid at the IRS rate.

2016 GHCC PINEWOOD DERBY

Boys and Girls, Ladies and, Gentlemen, Children of all ages! It’s that time of year to start thinking about the annual Pinewood Derby at the Greater Hansville Community Center. As the days grow

shorter, and the nights get longer, and the temperatures start dropping, it’s good to have a fun indoor activity where it’s warm and dry.

This year the Pinewood derby event will be held on February 6 at 2:00 PM. There will also be a Pinewood Derby workshop where we will have PWD car kits available for $5.00 each and we will be able to help get your car cut out and start the painting process, and just about get your car race ready. The workshop will be held at the Community Center on January 23, 2016, from 9:00 AM to noon.

So, fire up your imagination, study your physics, and catch the Pinewood Derby fever. This is way more fun than sitting at home watching the grass grow. Keep an eye out for more information in The Log as this event gets closer.
