FROM PASTOR JERRY’S DESK [email protected]

One proud pastor

As I write this article, we have just completed the second phase of our Fruitful Congregation Journey which involved four consultants reviewing data, holding interviews and focus groups and then conducting the all-church workshop. They wrote into the night on Saturday and provided us a Ministry Action Plan that had no surprises.

Let me first say thank you to all those who participated. We had over 400 who completed the online survey, over 200 made it for some part of Saturday’s workshop and then somewhere from 300-350 stayed for the reading of the Ministry Action Plan Sunday after worship.

That says a lot about how we feel about God’s ministry at Noblesville First. People are ready to move forward into a hopeful future.

Please be sure to attend the Church Conference from 7-7:30pm on Wednesday, June 1, in the Sanctuary, where we will formally vote to adopt the Ministry Action Plan.

Cindy Romano will lead us in some worship while the vote is being counted. This step is to ensure the Ministry Action Plan becomes more than just the agenda of the pastor. To fulfill this Action Plan requires significant buy-in. The five areas we are called to improve include: 1) Discerning a clear shared vision, 2) Creating

an intentional faith development process, 3) Creating a congregation-wide strategy for reaching new generations, 4) Developing an accountable leadership structure which expands and effectively trains our leadership base, and 5) Developing and implementing effective welcoming and connecting strategies.

If you were unable to participate in our Fruitful Congregation Journey weekend, please email me at [email protected] for an electronic copy of the Ministry Action Plan. I will also send you a nice Project Process Summary that one of our members produce of the plan.

Like many of those unnamed people of the Bible, most of us today will remain unnamed in the history books. And many of us may feel unnamed in the life situations we face. Most of the time, we do not feel the need to identify ourselves completely to everyone we meet. But sometimes being unnamed can make us feel unloved, unwanted and unworthy.

Yet nothing could be further from the truth. As God called our biblical heroes to a life of faith, so God also calls us. As God loved them and knew their names, so God also loves us and knows our names. We too make a difference in the world around us. We too have our own stories to tell.

Feeling down? Our Stephen Ministry can help. Stephen ministers aren’t just there for a “big” crisis. They’re also available for the little ones, because many times the little things can really add up. So don’t wait until you have a really big crisis. Consider Stephen Ministry if the little things are getting you down.

Eyes and Ears of JesusWe are the eyes and ears of Jesus on earth today. It is our duty to be watching and listening to people around us, recognizing when they have needs for care. News from Troop 101Eagle Scouts honored

This month’s featured book is Chasing the Divine in the Holy Land by Ruth Everhart.

Everhart jumped at the offer to travel to the Holy Land as one of several ministers taking part in a documentary about pilgrimage. Little did she know just how demanding and rewarding her transformation from Presbyterian minister, wife and mom to pilgrim would be. In these pages, she writes about her trip into the dust and beauty of Christianity’s cradle.

Are you interested in topics that affect the world today? Want to exchange

ideas with others who enjoy reading? Then the United Methodist Women (UMW) reading program is for you!

Book titles, available in the church library, are chosen by the UMW Conference and cover missions, leadership, community and social action.

Readers who choose to follow a reading plan can earn a Certificate of Recognition from the UMW Conference.

Thomas built a World War II trench that stands out of the ground as an exhibit for the museum of war at Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park. It will be used to showcase era equipment.

John dug out a bunker, reinforced walls, and created an exit for a World War I trench at Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park. He filled sandbags for the walls and dug a bunker that was seven feet from the roof.

The Kids Hope USA program, a mentoring program partnering Noblesville First with White River Elementary School, ended the school year with 14 mentor/student relationships.

Each relationship also had a behind-the-scenes partner praying for the student, the mentor, and the relationship. The program also has six trained substitutes. Each mentor met with his/her student for one hour each week to read, talk, play, listen and help the child learn, grow and succeed.

Please pray for these students this summer. Also, please prayerfully consider if you might want to be a mentor or prayer partner for the coming school year. For information, contact Jean Morris at 317-294-0886 or [email protected].

experience includes Director of Music positions at three churches, most recently Castleton United Methdist and faculty positions at North-western University and Anderson University where he currently serves as Dean of Music, Theatre and Dance, a position he will retain while working as Director of Music for Noblesville First. “I thrive on the energy of a college campus. The youth have so much they bring to their work. That keeps me going, and keeps me in touch with what is possible.” “I’m so honored to be invited to join this staff,” Jeff explained. He is looking forward to getting to know the church and the choir before choir season begins in the fall. Among his hopes for the future, Jeff looks forward to introducing creative approaches to congregational singing.“I want hymn singing to be fun and

engaging and touching and meaningful,” Jeff explained, “not

just something we do by rote.” “It brings a sense of community when people sing together. It gives them a chance to voice and know their faith in a different way than what comes to us in the spoken word.” Jeff also looks forward

to the possibility of introducing opportunities for short-term choral commitments. For example, as we approach high days of the church year—Christmas, Easter, the end of the season—we could invite people who can’t commit year-round to come for a window of 3-4 weeks.Jeff lives in Fishers with his wife Susan. They have two sons, Nathan and Daniel, both of whom are in college.Join in welcoming Jeff and his family!

Teter Organic Farm. It is the first step of a three-year plan that will produce food for area food pantries and eventually also provide jobs for those with developmental needs.

Forty-five Noblesville First and community volunteers gathered to plant 20 varieties of vegetables, most of which were donated by Indy Urban Acres. Volunteers ranged in

age from 3 to 73 and accomplished the planting in just a few hours.

On a recent trip to Canada with the Wabash Pastoral Leadership Program, Pastor Aaron was inspired by a similar farm. We are looking forward to the relationships this endeavor will develop within the congregation but even more with the Noblesville community.

Summer prayer tips: Try new habits by Beth Lively

Psalm 72:15-17 (MSG) ... Offer prayers unceasing

to him, bless him from morning to night ....

As the old blues song croons: “Summer time, and the living is easy ... ” That’s true about most of

the weather here in the Midwest, at least. Too, it’s

true for folks on vacation from school or for a few weeks with family,

attending reunions, cook-outs and holiday celebrations.

Tips for the summer: practice patience, kindness, planning ahead, and creating clear

boundaries. Delegate jobs, anticipate needs, but don’t sweat it if plans go awry. Be as kind to yourself as everyone else.

Also, PRAY!! Summer is as good a time as any to form new prayer habits or create different ways to continue current ones.

Taking time to speak to and about God as well as listen to Him takes care of just about anything. This can be as simple as taking turns for meal blessings, evening or morning prayers, or asking everyone to name something they want to give thanks for that day. Suggest your family pray about family decisions, disappointments, trouble or to praise God for beautiful parks and caught fish!

Making prayer a normal part of each day doesn’t have to be formal, or the same each day, but it does need to be disciplined. When we carve out time in the day, the habit becomes as lifelong and automatic as teeth brushing. And yes, it is okay to pray for sunshine and hungry fish!

May God Bless your Summertime!
