Hi! My name

is Gunner .

I’m a 5-month- old Border Collie from Penn Yan. I now live in Canandaigua with my Mommy. I love to go to the lake and play in the water. I also love to take walks on the pier and go to the park. My Mommy and I like to go down the slide and play frisbee. I love living in Canandaigua!

Will a boycott of this year’s Oscars make Hollywood more diverse?

Yes, it will definitely help.

It all depends on who boycotts the event.

It’s unnecessary. The Academy is working to diversify.

No. Movie studios need to promote movies with minorities.

WAYS TO IM PROVE INDOOR AIR QUALITY ALL YEAR LONG

As w inter w ears on, it’s not uncommon for people living in cold w eather c limates to experience some cabin fever. W inter w eather confines many people to their homes, making many antsy to get out once the first signs of spring begin to appear.

In addition to contributing to cabin fever, w inter w eather can have a negative impact on indoor air quality. While air pollution is something most often associated w ith densely populated c ities, the air inside homes is not immune to pollution, especially during long w inters w hen w indow s are often c losed for months at a time. Though open w indow s in spring and summer can vastly improve indoor air quality, there are w ays to ensure that air stays fresh and healthy regardless of w hich season it happens to be.

Doctors of Audiology

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Can Heart Surgery Cause Hot Flashes? DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had hot flashes, similar to those experienced by post-menopausal women, ever since my coronary bypass in 1990. I can be sitting quietly in a chair reading or at my computer, and suddenly I find myself dripping with perspiration. I also have had panic attacks, with increased heart rate and other physical symptoms. A few years ago, a 24-hour EKG showed heart- rhythm irregularities and that my heart stopped briefly while asleep.

If these idiosyncrasies of my autonomic nervous system are a consequence of my time on the heart-lung machine for the bypass, I’m not complaining -- just curious. You said that studies have been done on almost everything. Is this one? -- W.S.B.

ANSWER: I found that a lot of people complain of similar symptoms. I also found that indeed, the autonomic nervous system (the part of the nervous system that regulates temperature, sweat, blood pressure and many other critical aspects of body function without our being consciously aware of it) can be adversely affected by cardiac surgery. Some authors have suggested that the autonomic nervous system changes are one mechanism by which people are more likely to have depression after cardiac surgery. I found several possible explanations why the ANS changes with bypass surgery, but no clear consensus.

I would want to be sure that there are no other causes of these symptoms. It sounds like you have had an extensive evaluation, but I certainly would be concerned about a sudden fast heart rhythm, such as atrial fibrillation.

The booklet on abnormal heart rhythms explains atrial fibrillation and the more common heart rhythm disturbances in greater detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 107W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I suffered a long time with GERD. I was diagnosed with Barrett’s esophagus, a precancerous disease. My doctor recommended a procedure called a Nissen fundoplication. Since the procedure, I have not had heartburn again. I would do it again, after what I went through. I get an endoscopy every two years to keep an eye on my disease. -- G.D.B.

ANSWER: Barrett’s esophagus is a complication of longstanding reflux. It is diagnosed when the lining of the esophagus starts to look like the lining of the stomach. Barrett’s esophagus can progress to cancer of the esophagus. About 0.2 percent of those with Barrett’s per year will develop cancer, which sounds low, but if you live with the condition for 25 years, that’s about a 5 percent risk.

Surgery for reflux disease is done only rarely. However, it is very effective (85 percent to 90 percent). The most common reason to consider surgery is inadequate relief from medications and lifestyle changes. However, severe erosions from acid in the esophagus, inability to take medications, a stricture (partial closure) of the esophagus and Barrett’s esophagus are all reasons to consider surgery. Surgery appears to reduce the risk of cancer more than other treatments.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to [email protected]. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

Heart health tips no matter the w eather

Workout indoors: This doesn’t necessarily mean heading to the nearest gym. It’s possible to get recommended exerc ise at home or at another location. Walking briskly around a mall is good exerc ise and you can w indow shop in the process. Lift heavy items around the house in place of dumbbells. Doing regular household chores w ith more vigor is another w ay to get blood flow ing and your heart pumping.

Preparing for hospice care Sometimes patients succumb to a disease, in spite of the

best treatments and support. When the time comes for a family to confront a loved one’s declining health, hospice care can be a dignified way to make that person’s final days as comforting as possible.

Hospice is a type of care designed to make the final moments of a person’s life as pain-free and manageable as possible. It can take place in a medical facility, but very often hospice care occurs at home or wherever the ill person feels most comfortable.

Hospice care is usually the last step when all other options have been exhausted. Making the decision to move a loved one to hospice care can be an emotionally wrenching time. Decisions such as these may be better made at a time in a person’s life when he or she is not sick. That is why living wills that spell out details for end-of-life care can be quite valuable. Decisions are made with a level head and not wrought with emotions. Such living wills also can take the pressure off of family members who may not feel comfortable making such decisions on their own or in concert with relatives.

Hospice is a type of care and a philosophy that focuses on the palliative care of terminally ill patients. Rather than providing medication to try to treat the illness, medicine is offered to make a person more comfortable and remove any pain. Psychological therapy may also be offered to help the person come to terms with the end of life. Although hospice is a concept that has gradually evolved since the 11th century, the principles of modern hospice care can trace their roots to the 1950s and Dame Cicely Saunders, a nurse and social worker who is known as the creator of the hospice movement.

If hospice care is outlined in a dying person’s living will or expressed wishes, there are some guidelines that can be followed by the sick individual.

• Visit various medical care centers to see if away-from- home options provide the care and environment you desire. Be sure to establish what type of hospice care you prefer. This may

include care within a nursing home or hospital, or in the comfort of your own home.

• Sign a medical durable power of attorney. This signed document gives authority to an adult age 18 or older, who then has the right to make necessary medical and healthcare decisions for you in the event you become incapacitated.

• Clearly indicate your wishes regarding resuscitation. A signed document may alert emergency healthcare personnel or others of your wishes not to be resuscitated. This document must be signed by you and a doctor and witnessed by others.

• Decide on the duration of care. Hospice care generally lasts six months. This enables a long stretch of palliative care. Should you live beyond the time period, hospice care can continue. Studies have shown that patients who receive hospice care for at least 30 to 60 days gain greater benefit than those who are placed in hospice only in their final days.

• Investigate financial options for hospice. Medicare and Medicaid provide hospice coverage in 44 states. Many private insurance plans have a hospice benefit as well. Understand how payment is made to figure out if private funding will be necessary.

Not all hospice programs are the same. Certain core models of care are followed by many hospice facilities, but options vary. Hospice can provide comfort in a person’s final days and help sufferers better enjoy life and time spent with loved ones in these last days.

Lady Bombers Demonstrate “We Are ER!!”

At the East Rochester JV and Varsity Basketball games against Gananda, the ER Lady Bombers Varsity Basketball Booster Club will be hosting a fundraising event. The game is scheduled for Thursday, January 28th at the East Rochester High School, starting at 6:00pm. In the past, the Varsity girls have raised money to benefit both the Mary Cariola Center and an organization called “More Than A Game,” which raises money for cancer research and care. This year, the team talked about how they wished they could see their efforts benefit families in their own community.

In looking into this, they found two charities right in ER that could benefit greatly from the team’s support. The East Rochester Resource Center not only has a food shelf and clothing center, it also provides furniture and household items and helps the elderly and disabled who may need anything from meals to snow shoveling or just to have someone visit. The Father’s Heart Ministry is the other group selected. Founded by ER native Russ Loria, their mobile soup kitchen helps feed and clothe the people of our streets.

Girls Coach Mark Loria said, “As someone who grew up, went to school, played sports and teaches and coaches in ER, I feel obligated and responsible to give, not only myself, but to [also] provide an opportunity for our girls to serve and give back to

our community, especially the families in need. This will teach our kids accountability and responsibility, and to always make other people’s needs a priority in life.”

At the game, the team will host a bake sale, silent auction and half-court shot challenge. They will also be selling apparel that will have the “We Are ER” logo. The girls felt that this logo will really tie it into the entire community and not just their game.

Please show your support by attending this event and showing the girls and our community that truly “We Are ER!”

Prepare your home to sell

• Do a deep cleaning. Whether a cleaning service is hired or the homeowner does it himself, tackling necessary cleaning projects could make the home shine. Now is the time to wash the windows, shampoo the carpets, regrout the bathrooms, and tackle all of those messes that could compromise a sale.

• Add a fresh coat of paint. If walls are bright colors or eclectic, it could pay to paint rooms in more neutral shades to appeal to the masses. Just be aware that some buyers are suspicious of paint, especially freshly painted ceilings. They may think a homeowner is trying to hide something, usually water stains.

• Keep the home updated. While one doesn’t have to follow every trend, ensuring the home is ageless can make for a better sell. So if the cabinets scream 1985 and the bathroom is circa 1967, it could be time to do some updating.

Real Estate Focus on projects with better- than-average returns that may yield additional savings in other ways. For example, installing new windows will cost $10,000 to $20,000 on average but return 75% to 80% of your investment.

And those improvements have the added benefit of making your home more energy-efficient, so you’ll also save on your electricity and heating bills. Plus, you may qualify for tax credits that will further offset the cost of making the changes. For the complete list, go to energystar.gov.

Everyday angels - you may live with one, or perhaps you’ve encountered one as you go about your daily life. They’re those special individuals who go out of their way to lend a helping hand; who show they care by their thoughtfulness; who are willing to take a stand for something they believe in; who are always ready to pitch in and get it done, without fanfare or recognition; or who sacrifice for others, whether caring for a loved one, or stopping to help a stranger.

Share your angel with Penny Saver readers. He or she just might inspire others to be an angel, too! Submit at gvpennysaver.com under My Hometown.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Feb. 6, 1928, a woman calling herself Anastasia Tschaikovsky and claiming to be the daughter of the murdered czar of Russia arrives in New York City hoping to claim the Romanov fortune. In 1994, DNA analysis finally showed that Anastasia was not a Romanov, but was in fact a Polish-German factory worker.

The Memorial Day

Detachment # 468 of the

Marine Corps League

would like to thank

everyone who participated

in the Toys For Tots

campaign for 2015. We

appreciate the organizations

and businesses who

participated as drop off

points and the generosity of

everyone in Ontario and

Livingston Counties who

donated toys. We were able

to collect and distribute

4,000 toys through our

participating agencies. A lot

of children had a great

Christmas because of all of

you. Thank you and we look

forward to 2016.

On Monday, December

29th I was in Denny’s in

Batavia alone having

breakfast. I am a widow of

20 years plus and dine alone

quite often, and across from

me a beautiful family were

also having breakfast. A

husband and wife and I

assume their daughter who

had 2 beautiful well behaved

twin daughters. They left

before I did; they glanced

over and gave me a nice

smile. After they left the

waitress came over and told

me they had paid for my

breakfast. I don’t know if

they are local or just passing

through. I just want to say

Thank You to them. I will

pass it on.

A Grateful

Senior Citizen

The residents of Lakeville

Estates want to give a huge

THANK YOU to all the local

merchants who were so

generous with their

donations of gift cards and

merchandise to use as door

prizes at our Community

Christmas Party.

Gratefully Yours,

Residents of

Lakeville Estates

Hats off to Caledonia

Mayor Debbie Davis for

securing a third grant for the

culverts on Mill Street. As a

tax payer it’s encouraging to

see our federal & state tax

dollars put back into our

community & not always

others. Keep up the good

work!!!

Cat overpopulation is not a cat problem, it’s a people problem. People caused it, people can fix it. All cats deserve a home and love; they should not be living wild outside. Please do not get a cat or kitten if you cannot have it spayed or neutered or keep it in at all times, and give it a lifetime home. Aid financially or help if you can those trying to trap, neuter & release feral cats. If you can, give a shelter cat or two a good home.

Veterinarians, please make the cost to euthanize an animal as low as you possibly can. Many animals suffer needlessly as their owners cannot afford the high cost. Do it for the animals.

While driving yesterday, I had two cars pull out in front of me! When I looked in my rear view mirror both times there were no cars behind me. Yes, you “made it” but only because I braked. I could understand if I had 4 or more cars behind me but to wait an extra 30 seconds or so to be safe, why not?

A neighbor up the hill from us lets their stupid dog bark incessantly, even late into the evening (10/ 11pm). If you are not going to take care of a pet properly, then DON’T HAVE ONE! We can hear it inside

our home, even on the opposite side of the house. My wife even wears ear plugs to bed and she can STILL hear it. If it keeps up I will contact the authorities. We are up early for work and we need to sleep!

Just a reminder from Driver’s Education class, when vehicles turn right at an intersection onto a 4- lane road, stay in the right lane, then put on your turning signal to merge to the Left lane. Those turning left onto a 4-lane road, stay in the left lane, and then put your turning signal on to merge to the right lane. As a quick reminder, when turning, stay in the closest lane, then merge into the other lane making sure lane is clear & your turning signal is on. Driver’s Ed should NEVER have been cut from school budgets. If you drive, learn the rules of the road & law enforcement of the rules as well.

HENRIETTA “WE HAVE A PROBLEM”

Paid for by concerned citizens.

Henrietta’s Fire Commissioner wants us to approve a $5 million bond. This is in addition to the 13% tax increase they already approved.

• Fire district tax rate is $2.65 per thousand – up 13%

• Town tax rate is $1.12 per thousand – down 3.2%

• The fire district tax rate is set by the Fire Commissioners – not the Town Board

The bond issue however must be approved by the voters of Henrietta.

• PLEASE VOTE JANUARY 26TH FROM

4:00PM – 9:00PM AT THE FIRE HOUSE

ON BAILEY ROAD

The fire district has already exceeded the 2016 New York State tax cap.

If this bond vote passes the fire district will also exceed the 2017 tax cap.

Make Your Business Dinner A Success: Invite Early

When hosting a business dinner, it’s best to give prospective or existing clients at least one week’ s notice. Anything less than a week will seem too last- minute and might give clients the impression, whether true or false, that a host and his company are disorganized and sloppy. When taking a client to breakfast or lunch, the invitation can be extended with less than a week’s notice, but no less than a few days in advance.
