The extraordinary combination of both high strength and high ductility in nanostructured Cu and Ti processed by SPD clearly sets them apart from coarse-grained metals (marked as +), including Au, Be, Ca, Co, Fe, Hf, Mg, Mo, Nb, Ni, Pd, Pt, Re, Ru, Ta, Th, Ti, U, V, W, and Zr (all are 99.5% to 99.9% pure).

Innovation potential of BNM

The innovation probability in various sectors vs. specific strength (UTS/ ρ).The highest potential might be seen in applications and products under extreme environments and/or with extreme specific strength’ requirements. Adv.Eng.Mater., 2007

And as you can see from the download statistics in Table 2, two review papers of this special issue, although just published in December, already made it into the Top-10 of all papers published in 2007 – a clear sign that this topic is of high interest to the scientific community.”

Nanostructured Ti has the following advantages:• can reduce weight of implanted structures due to

improved mechanical properties; • superior biological compatibility; • allows to develop advanced implant designs.

Cooperation via Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung Prof. Valiev R.Z. was granted the prestigious scientific Humboldt Foundation Research Award

(Germany) in 2001 for outstanding scientific research in the field of bulk nanostructured material. This allowed establishing close and productive scientific cooperation of the Institute and with a number of German research centers, such as : Institute of materials science in the University of Erlangen-Nurnberg Institute of Nanotechnology in the Karlsruhe Research center Institute of theoretical and applied physics in Stuttgart University

The cooperation has been continued in 2007-2008.
