The Flipped Classroom and the Connected Classroom
Russell StannardLecture 4 week 1
Flipped ClassroomVery hot topicA movement that is taking place in the USA
especially. Little research into thisPressure coming from different areasIdea is that we don’t need to lecture
anymore. All the content can be put on line and we spend time with the students

Why Flip a classroom?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aGuLuipTwg&feature=related
We canWe are wasting valuable class timeWe are not with the students when they need
us most ( coursework, homework, exams)It is an inefficient way of working.Students need more one on one or focused
teaching.
ProblemsCan you see any problems with Flipping the
classroom?Has the idea got any relevance in language
teaching?
Who made this popularIt is not new. I was doing it in 1992 and so
were many other people. Khan Academyhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aGuLuipTwg&feature=relatedI
My workWorked at University of WestminsterFlipped my course ( light version)Put all the content on-line ( free and to the
public)Pushed thousands of people onto the on-line
contenthttp://www.multimediatrainingvideos.com/Can you guess what happened?
ResultsNumbers jumped on the course from 12 to 25
in two yearsMassive interest in the courseLecture time cut to 1 hour a week and
tutorial time doubledStudents loved itTutors didn’t love it so muchSeveral problems –quality of tutorial time,
students complaining that content is on-line, copyright issues
Can Flipping work in ELT?I think we already do itFlipping might be too much focus on inputRequires a lot of workCreating on line content ( linking it)Working out what to do with the free time
( tutorials)Dealing with large classesCorrection/Feedback
The Connected ClassroomMy idea not common language. We can get students to do much more
interesting things in language outside of the class.
We can use tools like mailVu, myBrainShark, Eyejot, Audioboo to record themselves speaking outside of the class.
The Connected ClassroomWhat we do in class and what we do outside
of the class ( connect them)For example set up and practice a speaking
activity in the lesson but do speaking on own at home and then send it to the student.
It is the CONNECTION that is key. The more preparation work you do, the better the students will do the activity.
Why do it?Some students shyMakes homework far more interesting(variety, move away from typical homeworkReal chance to shift to speakingPersonalisationSharingOwnership
ExperimentGroup of Japanese studentsDrew a time line on the boardSpoke about my lifeGot students to do samePut them in pairs and told them to talk about
their livesGave some feedbackTold students to go home and record
themselevesSend the emails to meI listened, took notes and provided feedback
What worked?Students spoke a lotShy students really opened upI learnt a lot about themProvided lots of information to me about their
level, pronunciation problems, vocabulary etcThey enjoyed itMany used up the whole 10 minutesThis work is not published yet
ProblemsHave to listen to 18 students talking for up to
10 minutesSo much information. How do you deal with itOne student had technical problemsObviously need access to computersDone similar experiment with myBrainShark
