Mitchell INQUIRER STAFF WRITER A good showing by Rut- gers in its first season in the Big Ten helped the Scarlet Knights close out strong in its recruiting of the class of 2015. Rutgers went 8-5, in- cluding 3-5 in the Big Ten, and defeated North Carolina, 40-21, in the Quick Lane Bowl. It land- ed its most sought-after recruits in the weeks leading up to national signing day Wednesday. They included four-star Florida defensive end Marques Ford the highest rated Rutgers re- cruit since 2012 and Illinois offensive tackle Jack Shutack, rated the No. 77 offensive tackle in the country by ESPN.com. Ford backed out of his commitment to Tennes- see late last month be- fore switching to Rut- gers. Shutack (6-6, 270), who had offers from Ten- nessee, North Carolina State, Iowa State, and Minnesota, committed to Rutgers earlier this week. Both players were among a group of 25 play- ers who signed national letters of intent with Rut- gers on Wednesday. “I think when you make a positive first im- pression, that certainly helps. I don’t think there’s any doubt about that,” Rutgers coach Kyle Flood said at a news conference on campus. “I think recruits in our [region] and really na- tionally are getting to know us as a Big Ten foot- ball program. And I think the more they got to know about us, the more they liked us, and that’s probably why we fin- ished as strong as we did.” The 6-4, 230-pound Ford is clearly the prize of the class. He is rated the No. 186 prospect in the Rivals 250. He’s also ranked No. 285 in the ESPN 300, which has him No. 25 at his position. Rutgers officially joined the Big Ten July 1 after one season in the American Athletic Con- ference. The Scarlet Knights re- cruited well in New Jer- sey, landing linebacker Sidney Gopre (Milford Academy). The 6-1, 205-pound Gopre was named the Newark Star- Ledger’s defensive play- er of the year. They also added help at tight end, securing 6-5, 220-pound Nakia Griffin. Rivals ranks Griffin as the No. 22 tight end in the na- tion. Flood acknowledged that versatile Glassboro safety Ronnie James, a second-team all-South Jersey selection by The Inquirer, could take the field in his first season with the Scarlet Knights. James’ brother, Paul, was the starting running back for the Scarlet Knights last season be- fore suffering a season- ending knee injury against Navy. “Recruiting Ronnie was about him. He’s somebody who does a lot of things for his football team down there at Glass- boro, you know, from of- fensive football — rush- ing and receiving the ball — to special teams to de- fense,” Flood said. “We know about him be- cause we had him in our camp,” Flood continued. “We recruited him as a corner, so he knows that. But I wouldn’t be sur- prised to see him back there returning kicks at some point or with his hands on the ball be- cause he’s really a dy- namic football player who makes plays in what- ever fashion your foot- ball team needs them.” +[email protected] "@JmitchInquirer BUICK CADILLAC CHEVROLET HYUNDAI LAMBORGHINI SAAB SUBARU TOYOTA VOLKSWAGEN USED CARS BENTLEY GMC MASERATI LEXUS ROLLS ROYCE ACURA ASTON MARTIN DODGE HONDA MAZDA NISSAN auto dealer directory Piazza Acura of Ardmore 150 WEST LANCASTER AVE ARDMORE, PA 19003 ArdmoreAcura.com 800-916-5017 F.C. A good showing by Rut-gers in its first season inthe Big Ten helped theScarlet Knights close outstrong in its recruiting ofthe class of 2015.

Rutgers went 8-5, in-cluding 3-5 in the BigTen, and defeated NorthCarolina, 40-21, in theQuick Lane Bowl. It land-ed its most sought-afterrecruits in the weeksleading up to nationalsigning day Wednesday. They included four-starFlorida defensive endMarques Ford — thehighest rated Rutgers re-cruit since 2012 — andIllinois offensive tackleJack Shutack, rated theNo. 77 offensive tackle int h e c o u n t r y b yESPN.com.

Ford backed out of hiscommitment to Tennes-see late last month be-fore switching to Rut-gers. Both players wereamong a group of 25 play-ers who signed nationalletters of intent with Rut-gers on Wednesday.

“I think when youmake a positive first im-

pression, that certainlyhelps. I don’t thinkthere’s any doubt aboutthat,” Rutgers coachKyle Flood said at a newsconference on campus.“I think recruits in our[region] and really na-tionally are getting toknow us as a Big Ten foot-ball program. And I thinkthe more they got toknow about us, the morethey liked us, and that’sprobably why we fin-ished as strong as wedid.”

The 6-4, 230-poundFord is clearly the prizeof the class. He is ratedthe No. 186 prospect inthe Rivals 250. He’s alsoranked No. 285 in theESPN 300, which has himNo. 25 at his position.

Rutgers off ic ial lyjoined the Big Ten July 1after one season in theAmerican Athletic Con-ference.

“Recruiting Ronniewas about him. He’ssomebody who does a lotof things for his footballteam down there at Glass-boro, you know, from of-fensive football — rush-ing and receiving the ball— to special teams to de-fense,” Flood said.

“We know about him be-cause we had him in ourcamp,” Flood continued.“We recruited him as acorner, so he knows that. But I wouldn’t be sur-prised to see him backthere returning kicks atsome point or with hishands on the ball be-cause he’s really a dy-namic football playerwho makes plays in what-ever fashion your foot-ball team needs them.”
