A good showing by Rut-gers in its first season inthe Big Ten helped theScarlet Knights close outstrong in its recruiting ofthe class of 2015.
Rutgers went 8-5, in-cluding 3-5 in the BigTen, and defeated NorthCarolina, 40-21, in theQuick Lane Bowl. It land-ed its most sought-afterrecruits in the weeksleading up to nationalsigning day Wednesday.They included four-starFlorida defensive endMarques Ford — thehighest rated Rutgers re-cruit since 2012 — andIllinois offensive tackleJack Shutack, rated theNo. 77 offensive tackle int h e c o u n t r y b yESPN.com.
Ford backed out of hiscommitment to Tennes-see late last month be-fore switching to Rut-gers. Shutack (6-6, 270),who had offers from Ten-nessee, North CarolinaState, Iowa State, andMinnesota, committed toRutgers earlier thisweek. Both players wereamong a group of 25 play-ers who signed nationalletters of intent with Rut-gers on Wednesday.
“I think when youmake a positive first im-
pression, that certainlyhelps. I don’t thinkthere’s any doubt aboutthat,” Rutgers coachKyle Flood said at a newsconference on campus.“I think recruits in our[region] and really na-tionally are getting toknow us as a Big Ten foot-ball program. And I thinkthe more they got toknow about us, the morethey liked us, and that’sprobably why we fin-ished as strong as wedid.”
The 6-4, 230-poundFord is clearly the prizeof the class. He is ratedthe No. 186 prospect inthe Rivals 250. He’s alsoranked No. 285 in theESPN 300, which has himNo. 25 at his position.

James’ brother, Paul,was the starting runningback for the ScarletKnights last season be-fore suffering a season-ending knee injuryagainst Navy.
“Recruiting Ronniewas about him. He’ssomebody who does a lotof things for his footballteam down there at Glass-boro, you know, from of-fensive football — rush-ing and receiving the ball— to special teams to de-fense,” Flood said.
“We know about him be-cause we had him in ourcamp,” Flood continued.“We recruited him as acorner, so he knows that.But I wouldn’t be sur-prised to see him backthere returning kicks atsome point or with hishands on the ball be-cause he’s really a dy-namic football playerwho makes plays in what-ever fashion your foot-ball team needs them.”
