From The Manager

Dear Members,As this is my introductory newsletter article, I would like to begin by sharing with you how excited Debbie and I are to be welcomed into the Rogue Valley Country Club family! Everyone here, including those we have met in the community, have warmly welcomed us. The first two weeks have been quite a whirlwind. I think I have met and shaken hands with each and every one of you. I would like to thank the Board for hosting the Welcome Reception and Cocktail Party on March 15, my first day. There were over 100 members who came out to welcome me. From the party, and subsequent conversations, the members I have had the opportunity to spend time with have shared a sincere passion for RVCC with me. This is both refreshing and exciting to hear and I’m excited to now be a part of it. By the time you read this, I’ll have had the opportunity to attend most of the Standing Committee meetings. There are a lot of things we will be working on to ultimately improve the Club. Fortunately, as I had mentioned at the Welcome Reception, RVCC has a great foundation. The grounds are beautiful and the golf course is in great condition. With this firm foundation to build on, improve-ments will come a lot easier. My mantra has been to find ways to do it faster, better and at less cost. We will begin with process improvements:

membership matriculation, elevation of services, staff training and facility enhancements. What I ask from all of you is to please have patience. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Each and every day we will take steps to improve however, it will take time. This is a marathon, not a sprint. Taking one day at a time, we will reach the finish line. The first large event coming up this month is a variety of activities surrounding Easter. I hope everyone can join us for one or more of them. We will be hosting an Easter Egg hunt for the little ones and an Easter Brunch for the whole family. The staff and I have been working hard on all the details and I hope you will be pleasantly surprised. Finally, I would like to take a moment and compliment the Board and the Interview Committee for their in-depth selection process. I’m sure it gave them confidence in their selection. I know for me and Debbie, it gave us the reassurance that Rogue Valley Country Club was the right fit for us. Everyone we have met has welcomed us with sincere warmth which we have not felt since we left the mid-west. We are looking forward to a great future as part of the family!

Jerry

Teaching the game of golf has done quite a bit of changing over the past 31 years that I have had the privilege of doing my best to help golfers enhance their experience on the golf course. When I first started, basically it was all done with the use of two fairly decent eyes. Watching the swing, assessing the set up and observing the flight of the ball to help determine what each individual is doing. My first “manual”, as it were, was a book called Practical Golf by John Jacobs. Mr. Jacobs was a full time teacher almost be-fore there were full time teachers. His approach of “cause and effect” analysis of the the ball flight and swing is still somewhat legendary among us old school instructors. Then, about 28 years ago, I purchased my first video camera. Not only did this help the student see what I was talking about but it was of tremendous help to us teachers in defining what was going taking place in an action that sometimes exceeded 100 mph. As the digital age kicked in, golf swing analysis software helped with drawing tools and other benefits that continued to help us become better teachers. But we’re not done yet. Now these advances are available on our smart phones and pads. Very cool. Now, to the point. What’s next? Well, it’s here. You’ve heard us talk about it before, but the big news is that we are up and

running and reaping the rewards of a super high end Launch Monitor, the Flightscope X2 with Doppler Radar. No, we cannot predict weather, but we can help you zero in on the clubs that best fit you and your swing. Among other attributes, this monitor can help determine...club head speed...squareness of contact...swing plane...angle of attack...flight AND roll distance...spin rate (a huge key in determining if your driver is costing you distance) ...driver fit ...if you are using the right ball.More, more, more... Now, is this for you? Maybe! But the good news is that it is set up year round in the back of the pro shop with a hitting cage and personal monitor for immediate feedback for YOU! Many have had sessions and all are dazzled. The emphasis of the feedback gained is on how the club and ball are interacting and with our help, teach you what can be done about it. Fitting you to the exact correct fit is now amazingly accurate. The future of fitting and even a big part of teaching is here NOW. Talk to our Professional Staff about some time on the X2. You’ll definitely appreciate the experience.

table handicaps. Post all scores, not just the low ones or not just your high ones. Every score you shoot, whether at RVCC or elsewhere must be posted. Don’t forget to adjust your score for equitable stroke control. There are posting stations in the Golf Shop, the Men’s Locker Room and the Ladies Locker Room for your use.

Hole in OneOn February 13 Fred Moran was playing with Toni and Steve Watkins when he aced the 11th hole. Fred used a 7 iron to produce the perfect swing. Congratulations Fred!

Rule 23Loose Impediments23-1. Relief Except when both the loose impediment and the ball lie in or touch the same hazard, any loose impediment may be removed without penalty. If the ball lies anywhere other than on the putting green and the removal of a loose impediment by the player causes the ball to move, Rule 18-2a applies. On the putting green, if the ball or ball-marker is accidentally moved in the process of the player removing a loose impediment, the ball or ball-marker must be replaced. There is no penalty, pro-vided the movement of the ball or ball-marker is directly attributable

71459to the removal of the loose impediment. Otherwise, if the player causes the ball to move, he incurs a penalty of one stroke under Rule 18-2a. When a ball is in motion, a loose impediment that might influ-ence the movement of the ball must not be removed. Note: If the ball lies in a hazard, the player must not touch or move any loose impediment lying in or touching the same hazard – see Rule 13-4c. PENALTY FOR BREACH OF RULE: Match play – Loss of hole; Stroke play – Two strokes.

Grounds ReportBy Craig Hilty

It’s unbelievable that spring is already here. I still feel as if I am waiting for win-ter to arrive. I have not witnessed such a mild winter season in all my years at

Rogue Valley Country Club. As we venture further away from winter, hope for additional snowpack in the mountains is also diminishing. This irrigation season is looking very bleak at this point, but once again your maintenance staff and I are more than prepared to handle the situation that we are dealt. Also with spring comes our first greens aerification of the year. This year we are planning on April 20-22, weather dependent of course. This spring, same as the last three years, we will be using 1/2” hollow core tines with 1 1/2” spacing. We will follow this up with clean-up of all the cores, then heavy sand topdressing, two different style drags to move and fill aerification holes, fertilizer is then put down with seed applied to collar and approaches and finished off with irrigation water. We will then wait approximately two to three days before our first roll of the greens and typically a week before our first mow of the greens. This recipe has worked remarkably well to allow our greens to heal quickly and back to your standards in as little time as possible. We will follow greens with tee aerification, with nearly the same process as greens. We, your golf course maintenance staff, would like to thank you for your patience during this time. We understand it may inconvenience you for a short time, but the benefits of aerification far outweigh the minor inconvenience it may cause.

As I noted in last month’s article, we lost a large oak tree at the south end of the driving range landing during a Feb-ruary wind event. In the top of the tree that fell was a Red Tail Hawk’s nest. It was extremely disheartening to see this nest that had graced this oak for decades lying on the ground. Luckily there were no hawks or chicks in the nest when the tree came down. One short week after the tree came down, the hawks began to rebuild in the remaining oak. This has been so encouraging and very special to witness! The next time you are hitting balls on the range, please look down to the large oak and notice the rebuilt hawk’s nest! There have been a few questions about filling divots with sand and seed versus replacing divots. There are times of the year where replacing your divot is preferred and vice versa. But not to complicate things, I will suggest this; please replace divot or fill with sand and seed, whichever is most convenient. As long as you are doing one of the two we are ahead of the game; doing nothing to a divot is the wrong thing to do. Also, please fix any ball marks you make or encounter on the greens, rake your tracks from any bunkers as you exit and please knock the sand off your shoes be-fore walking across any greens. As always, I encourage any questions or comments you may have. Please feel free to e-mail me or catch me on our course.

Respectfully,

Craig Hilty

LONDON FOG - MARCH 5The annual kick off for the RVWGA golf season officially starts with the London Fog and the serving of the tradition-al “fog” drink prior to a brunch. Mother Nature graciously provided us with a lovely sunny day to enjoy the festivities and many ladies ventured to the course afterwards. Vice President Cathee Shorkie orchestrated a fashion show of new spring outfits that are available in the pro shop. Joan Drake was the liaison from the pro shop. Peggy Tomlins, Deb Stuart, Phyllis K. Nelson, Pam Schepis, Tracie Armit-age, and Sheri Driskill were splendid in the bright spring col-ors and coordinated attire. President Rosemary Harrington intoduced Craig Hilty and Tracy Snyder who each gave us updates from their departments. Handicap Chairman Mary Botsford announced that posting scores started on March 1 and handicap updates will occur on the 1st and 15th of each month during the season. Scoring Chairman Gayle Jantzer gave pointers in how to fill out your score cards correctly for days play. Alice Hunt presented the master calendar and announced the first mixer of the season on March 26. Pam Turnipseed encouraged all ladies with a handicap index of less than 25 to join OWGA especially because RVCC is

hosting a tournament for the state organization in June. Margaret Gil-lette spoke of the popular Reno tour-nament that she and Cathy Dunlap organize in June. Cathee Schorkey drew names for three gift certificates from Salon Vivid; Toni Watkins, Tammy Allen and Phyllis Nelson were the lucky winners. There was a good turnout of ladies to play golf and enjoy the beautiful sunshine!

WELCOME NEW MEMBERSNew members to RVWGA who attended the London Fog were Vicki Smith, Dale Everson, Teresa Barry and Kate Moore. A warm RVCC welcome to all!

MEMBERSHIP BOOKLETSSheri Driskill, Membership Chair, asked for each member to update their information in the membership booklet. Layne Snyder will again be assembling the booklet and it will be distributed in early spring. Look for the distribution in the ladies locker room.

5 Steps to a Perfect Serve - Dennis Van der MeerWhen it comes to a well-rounded serve, we often overlook the little errors that keep us from winning more matches. Sometimes it helps to take a step back and re-evaluate what you think you know. Are there aspects you’re taking for granted that are actually holes in your technique? Here are seven questions to ask yourself -- you might be surprised at how much room for improvement you actually have.1. How reliable is my first serve?A big first serve that rarely goes in is not much of a weapon. To make your first serve more accurate divide the service square into three equal sized areas from the service line to the net. Now serve wide to the forehand side, then the middle, then serve down the center line. Serve successfully into each area before going on to the next. Initially give yourself two serves per area and then only one serve. Once you can complete a series of two consecutive successes to each area, you have reached your goal.2. How much pace do I generate? If your serve lands in the service court, but the ball does not carry to the back fence, you need to increase your racket head speed.

One trick is to bounce the ball hard into the ground with your racket and see how high it ricochets into the air. Pronate your forearm as fast as you can, and if the ball stays in the air for three seconds before it hits the ground, your racket head speed is acceptable.3. How effective is my kick serve?Test to see whether your kick serve can hit close to the singles side line on the ad side and then rebound outside of the doubles side line. If the ball does not carry that far, have your racket brush upwards and sideways past the right upper quarter of the ball. This will give it more of a wide kick.4. How effective is my slice serve? If your serve does not carry wide of the doubles side line on the deuce side after hitting the singles side line, you are not getting enough side spin. Hit the ball at the 3 o’clock mark and then pro-nate your forearm sharply through the hit. Now you should be able to move your opponent way off the court.5. A quick mid-game check if your serve is giving you trouble is:If your serve is going long try a little higher toss – if your serve is going into the net focus on keeping your head and shoulders up through the serve motion.

Are you looking for something different in your workouts? Exercise that will engage your body and mind in a new way? Mind Body classes, like Yoga and Pilates will be hotter than ever this year! Mind Body exercise is physical activity performed with an internal focus. “Not only does Pilates and Yoga improve flexibility, strength, posture and balance but also coordination, and focus. Pilates and Yoga classes primarily address, core strength, body awareness, and flexibility which not only keep your centered and focused but will dramatically improve your Golf or Tennis game!
