From The Manager

This month we will host our Annual Membership Meeting on Wednesday, November 11. At this meeting, we will present the ballot results for our incoming Board of Directors. At this time, I’d like to thank the six candidates who have stepped up to be a part of this important group who will help steer our Club into the future. It is great to see the enthusiasm of the member-ship as we continue to focus our direction. As we begin this process, one thing I would strongly encourage our membership to do is to take the time and get to know each of the candidates. Make sure the candidate you select has strategies for the direction of the Club that align with yours. I know it’s great to support a friend who might be in the running, how-ever, if their ideals and strategies for the Club aren’t what you agree with, look into another candidate who might better support the Club. The next piece of the puzzle is to please vote! It was discouraging to know that 200 voting members did not participate in the assessment vote back in September. The direction of that vote was passed by 25% of the voting population. While this may have been the right decision for the Club, it would have been encouraging to have seen it passed by the majority of the voting mem-bership. The new Board will set the direction for the next year. Make sure you know who you are selecting to set the course of your Club. Spend a little time and get to know the candidates. Did you know we have an electronic Comment Cart? In this issue of the Bulletin you’ll find some specific directions on where to locate it and how to fill it out. Recently in a House Committee meeting member input was a topic of discussion. We want to receive feedback from our members, both suggestive and posi-tive. It’s important for us to hear from you regarding social events, food items, and service. Our Comment Card is a component of our website, you just need to log in as a member. When filling it out, let us know if you’d like to be contacted, we’d be happy to follow up with you. You might wonder why we don’t have com-ment cards located throughout the Club. In general, a handwritten comment card stems from a negative experience and tends to be emotionally charged, and sometimes alcohol impaired. Research has shown those who take the time to go home and fill out an

electronic comment card are more likely to offer positive feedback or constructive criticism. There are great things happening around the Club and we would love hear about them from our members. The holidays are coming quickly and I want to share with you a new member event we’ll be hosting. On Tuesday, December 1 we will have our first Holiday Toast and Golf Shop Sale. There will be a complimentary beverage and light hors d’oeuvres. This is a fun event for you to mingle with other members and kick off the holidays. Tracy Snyder will be moving our Golf Shop to the ballroom to showcase new vendors and help you with your Christmas shopping. There will be great deals and we’ll even have a gift wrap table! Plan to make dinner reservations and spend the evening with us. Watch for more details coming soon!

Book Club - November 3The Book Club will meet on Tuesday, Novem-ber 3 at 4:00pm to discuss Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder, presented by Sonia Hodgdon. In medical school, Paul Farmer found

his life’s calling: to cure infectious diseases and to bring the lifesaving tools of modern medicine to those who need them most. Kidder’s magnificent account takes us from Harvard to Haiti, Peru, Cuba, and Russia as Farmer changes minds and practices through his dedication to the philosophy that “the only real nation is humanity.” There will be no book in December, but instead there will be the Annual Luncheon. Email Nancy Kline at [email protected] or call 541-779-2674 if you are interested in learning more.

Knitting/Craft Club - November 3Are you are interested in knitting or crafts of all kinds? Join these gals on Tuesday, November 3 in the Ladies’ Card Room to socialize while you work on a craft of your choos-ing. We have ladies who can help with knitting, quilting and cross stitching. E-mail Kathy Jones at [email protected] if you are interested in joining the group.

Bridge ClubDo you love to play Bridge and want to meet more RVCC members? We are a group of all levels, men and women, meeting Wednesday evenings on a monthly basis. If you know how to play, but are still honing your skills and would like to play a fun and relaxed game, join us! Contact Paige Filomeo at [email protected] or 541-772-3133 for information.

Giving TreeIt’s that time of year again where RVCC Members help make Christmas morning very special for foster children in our area. We are teaming up with the Jackson County Foster Parent Asso-ciation for the Giving Tree. Trees will be

located in the Clubhouse Entry, the Grill, and the Pro Shop decorated with ornaments from foster children. Each ornament has a “Christmas Wish” listed on it. To participate take an ornament from a tree, purchase the gift and return it unwrapped with the ornament attached to the RVCC Administration office by Friday, December 11. If you prefer to give money, slip your cash, or check, into the locked box at the Reception Desk. Each year that RVCC has featured the Giving Tree we have been able to grant every wish on the tree. Here is to another year of spreading holiday cheer and improving the quality of life for children involved in the foster care system!

“Practice makes perfect”. “Practice makes permanent”. “Perfect practice makes perfect”. Most of us have heard all of these or at least some of these and potentially even more sayings about the art of getting the most out of our practice time. Certainly, they make a certain amount of sense...even really good sense. But each of us needs to find the practice formula that will allow us to improve at a reasonable pace. As a young lad with dreams and aspirations of greatness, I was an incessant practicer. It was not unreasonable to see me hitting my own shag bag of balls as dark was falling on the range where I worked so many hours. The really good part of it was, it was “fun!” I don’t practice that much anymore, but I truly get a lot out of teaching the proper fundamentals of the swing and game as I understand them. Repeating my best efforts for a student and even thinking and talking about a good, fundamentally sound golf swing has helped me main-tain a decent game. But not many of us are in the position to do this. What practice keys can help us get the most out of the time we devote to practice? I’m glad you asked.• Dedicate your time wisely. Have a specific part of your game that you are targeting for improvement. For instance, if you are working on the set up, stick with it. Even to the point of thinking only of posture, or grip or ball position. Avoid playing hopscotch.• Practice sloooowwlly. Actual golf, the act of hitting the golf ball, occurs about every three minutes. I’m not suggesting

that you wait three minutes between shots...but you cannot stand there and hit shot after shot from the same stance and expect to get some value from time spent. Take a new set up, new grip, new stance...new everything, including a new set of pre-shot thinking. A Gary Player tip: Try putting your golf balls a few feet away.

• No reactions to miss hit shots. Now you are practicing negative thinking. Wow! Does that not make any sense! By the way, I’ve got personal experience in this area.

• Find your way of making it fun. If you are in the wrong frame of mind for hitting 5 irons or full shots of any kind, go practice your short game at our great short game facilities.

• Practice with a friend. I did a lot of that as a kid and we had contests that made the time much more enjoyable. You can develop a program where you actually are playing a hole on the range while staying in one spot. Pick a hole that has been a problem for you lately. Practice being successful.

• And finally, short game, short game, short game! The strokes you can save with pitching, chipping, sandplay and putting add up amazingly fast and truly make your long game better. Hope to see you out there practicing effectively.

his opponent, marker or fellow-competitor an opportunity to examine the ball and observe the lifting and replacement. The ball must not be cleaned when lifted under Rule 5-3. If the player fails to comply with all or any part of this pro-cedure, or if he lifts the ball without having reason to believe that it has become unfit for play during play of the hole being played, he incurs a penalty of one stroke. If it is determined that the ball has become unfit for play during play of the hole being played, the player may substi-tute another ball, placing it on the spot where the original ball lay. Otherwise, the original ball must be replaced. If a player substitutes a ball when not permitted and makes a stroke at the wrongly substituted ball, he incurs the general penalty for a breach of Rule 5-3, but there is no additional penalty under this Rule or Rule 15-2.

If a ball breaks into pieces as a result of a stroke, the stroke is canceled and the player must play a ball, without penalty, as nearly as possible at the spot from which the origi-nal ball was played (see Rule 20-5). *Penalty for Breach of Rule 5-3: Match play - Loss of hole; Stroke play - Two strokes. *If a player incurs the general penalty for a breach of Rule 5-3, there is no additional penalty under this Rule. Note 1: If the opponent, marker or fellow-competitor wishes to dispute a claim of unfitness, he must do so before the player plays another ball. Note 2: If the original lie of a ball to be placed or replaced has been altered, see Rule 20-3b. (Cleaning ball lifted from putting green or under any other Rule - see Rule 21)

Grounds ReportBy Craig Hilty

November is here, the leaves are chang-ing and falling at a rapid pace. This time of the year is always one of my favorite. The leaves are at, or near, peak color, the val-

ley rain and mountain snows are on the horizon (fingers crossed tightly!) and the grass is happy with its fresh aerification! I hope that you are all making your way out to the course as much as possible to enjoy this beautiful season! The fairway aerification and sand and seed topdressing is well underway. I appreciate your cooperation and patience as we continue with this process. This process is vital to the health of our fairways throughout all seasons. Aerification and removal of the cores helps alleviate compaction and allows oxygen and nutrient exchange to happen thus allowing for healthier turf. We then over-seed the fairways with perennial ryegrass and add sand topdressing to the turf. Then we drag the sand and seed into the aerification holes which helps keep compaction at bay and allows for a better drained playing surface. This process is able to be accomplished thanks to you, the golfing Members, and your continued support of your monthly sand and seed assessment. The course would not be the same without your support and this funding. Thank you! As I prefaced earlier we, as a golf course and community, are holding out hope that the predicted “El Niño” will in fact happen.

It seems like the general consensus is that we are set up with oceanic conditions to finally provide us with a wet and snow packed season. After the last two drought stricken seasons, and imposed irrigation restrictions, I am waiting with excitement and much anticipation to see if this transpires. This winter we will continue to level certain tees that have become crowned due to years of usage and settling. Rogue Course hole #7 black and gold tee will more than likely be the first tee we will look at. Please use caution around any area that we have equip-ment on, and please use designated teeing areas while these tees are being worked on. With the cooler temperatures on their way, frost delays are inevitable. Please check the web.foretees.com/roguevalley web site if you suspect there will be a frost delay. The grounds depart-ment will be in constant communication as the frost lifts to get you on the course. Even as fall and winter descend on us, I would still encourage you to fill or replace your divots. Even in the cool temperatures, replaced divots will heal and sand and seed will slowly grow in. Cheers to great November golfing.

Respectfully,

Craig Hilty

WINTER GOLF TOURNAMENTThe winter golf partner tournament is underway with many teams scheduling matches during this warm fall weather. Chairman Toni Watkins has the information posted on the locker room bulletin board. Partners schedule their matches and play continues until the London Fog in March 2016. If you have not yet signed up, get a partner and join in the fun. The party at the end of the season is always a fun event you do not want to miss!

TURKEY SHOOT - November 12Marcia Skinner has again organized the annual Turkey Shoot tournament using a 3-person scramble format. Sign up information is in the locker

room. The fun will start with an 11:30am shotgun and a gathering in the grill afterwards. Turkeys will be awarded to the first place team, chickens to second, cornish game hens to third and turkey jerky to fourth place. Join in the fun and maybe you will be a lucky one to take home a bird!

HOLIDAY AWARDS LUNCHEON - December 3Mark your calendar to attend the annual Awards Luncheon on December 3. The holiday gathering will begin at 11:30am with no-host cocktails and lunch to follow at 12:15pm. Holiday entertainment, introduction of next years officers and annual golf awards will be presented. Ladies are encouraged to bring donations for CASA children. CASA volunteers (Court Appointed Special Advocates) represent children who have been removed from their homes due to either abuse or neglect. The children range in age from infants through teens. Unwrapped toys or games, gift cards (Toys R Us, Target, Walmart, movies), clothing, or cash donations are always on the wish list. Monetary donations will also be collected for Dunn House, a shelter for abused women and their children. Plan on attending this festive event and share in the season of giving to those in our community who are less fortunate. Sign up in the locker room. Do not miss out on this festive start of the holiday season.

Shelli Bates and Carolyn Crews pose before they start play at the Ladies Fall Tournament. The ladies had beautiful weather for their Fall Tournament.

Fall is here, and as the season changes we are very excited to begin our new Fall menu which will showcase farm fresh harvest from the Rogue Valley. We have a Roasted Beet Terrine salad with a variety of heirloom beets in a layered terrine with whipped herb chevre, a Seared Scallop entrée with Butter-nut Risotto and Sage brown butter sauce, and Cedar Plank Salmon with Au Gratin potatoes. Also, we have an extensive bar menu which will be available at all times. It includes burgers, Prime Rib Dip, Prime Rib Sliders, and many healthy salad options. All

our Fall menus include a variety of Vegetarian, Vegan and Gluten Free options as well.

Fall Menu and Thanksgiving Meal Pick-up Options

For Thanksgiving, our talented culinary team will be available to prepare your entire Thanksgiving meal. Your orders must be in by Friday, November 20 and will be avail-able for pick up from 9:00am-11:00am on Thanksgiving Day. Look for the Club email which will contain all the options available for your meal.
