Tuesday Ladies-Donation of Fabric or Yarn Do you happen to have quantities of yarn or left-over fabric that you probably will never use? The

Tuesday Ladies work diligently all year and can use the material to make beautiful items, which

are sold during our annual Holiday Boutique. All proceeds from this event are donated to St.

November is Stewardship Month The Cathedral of St. Paul needs you and your support! This month will feature special messages

from our clergy and the bulletin which will encourage all of us to contribute our time, talent and

treasure to our beautiful Cathedral.

Sunday Church School Christmas Pageant As December approaches we will begin planning for another Nativity Icon presentation by our Sunday Church School youth. While all Sunday Church School children will join in the singing of

the carols and hymns, a group of children is also needed to portray each of the icons elements. If you are interested in your child taking part in the icon portion, please notify Virginia Pourakis via phone at 516 328-1637 or through the Sunday Church School office, after Youth Liturgy, or

during Fellowship Hour. Please provide your childs name, age and contact information. The icon parts are: shepherds, sheep, angels, old man *(Satan in disguise), Panagia Theotokos, ox,

donkey, star, midwives, Joseph, etc.

Annual Santa s Helpers This year the Cathedral of St. Paul has once again adopted the needs and wish list of Jose, one

Greek School Comes to Your Home This Christmas Season Our children are busy learning Greek Christmas Carols to sing to the entire Community. Our kids

(approximately 10-12 per team) will travel to your home to sing on December 20th between

5:00p.m. and 7:00p.m. If you we can brighten your holidays by song, please call Maria

The Weekly Food Run Everyone is welcome to join us every Friday evening at 8:00 p.m. to prepare the food run and

each Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. to distribute the food run Sponsors are also welcome. Each

run costs $120 but feeds over 120 people lunch.

Why I Commit to the Church

BECAUSE everything I have comes from GOD, and by giving a percentage of my income to HIM, I thus acknowledge His ownership and my stewardship. BECAUSE the Church is the best institution I know of through which my money can most profitably be used to extend Christs Kingdom. BECAUSE when I joined the Church, I promised to support it and I want to make good that promise. BECAUSE paying my commitments regularly reminds me that I have a definite share in extending the Kingdom of God. BECAUSE the educational, missionary and relief agencies of my Church have no other support than the tithes and offerings of Church members. BECAUSE I am not willing to accept the benefits of the Church without contributing to its works. BECAUSE by giving my money to Christ and His Church, I am laying up treasure in Heaven. BECAUSE pledging to the Church helps to keep me from growing selfish and indifferent.

Proverbs 3:9-10 Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the first fruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with new wine.

If you dont love God, dont give. God does not need token support of those who do not really care. If you do love God, let your giving of your time, talent and treasure be some indication of

the measure of love.

By doing good with the time, talent and treasure that God has given us, we hope to hear from

Him these words when we meet Him face to face, Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you a ruler over many things: enter into the joy

of your Lord (Matthew 25:23).

Stewardship Corner There are so many wonderful spiritual and social activities available to virtually every age group

at the Cathedral of Saint Paul. These ministries are dependent on the generosity of our faithful

Stewards to provide the necessary funding to support them. We welcome everyone to Come and See what our Cathedral has to offer. Come and See God work through you! With all of the organizations getting back into the routine of a new Ecclesiastical year, It is now that we should

put particular emphasis on our Stewardship commitment to our Cathedral. If you have already

completed your 2011 Stewardship Commitment, you may want to consider adding to it. If you

have yet to complete a Stewardship Commitment Card, please make it a priority to stop by the

Grief & Bereavement Our evening meetings are on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month at 7:30p.m. The

afternoon meetings are on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 2:00p.m. The next afternoon

meeting is November 16th and the next evening meeting for Wednesday, November 23rd at

7:30p.m. has been canceled for Thanksgiving Eve. The next evening meeting will be on

Wednesday, December 14th at 7:00p.m. for the Memorial Christmas Tree Service.

Memorial Christmas Tree The Memorial Christmas Tree Trisaghion Service will take place on December 14th at 7:00p.m.

in front of the Shrine of Panagia. You are cordially invited to bring an ornament in memory of

your loved one and place it on the Christmas Tree.

St. Annas Philoptochos St. Annas Philoptochos would like to extend an invitation to all the women of our community to join our chapter, the largest in the United States. Your membership dues supports our mission

of philanthropic endeavors. We offer various open programs throughout the year.

Father Andreas Beginning in December, Fr. Andreas has been re-assigned by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of

America to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

We will certainly miss Fr. Andreas, Presvytera Anthoula, Niko and Petros and pray for all the best

in this exciting new opportunity and challenge that awaits him in the service of the Lord as the

leader of a community.

It is certain that Fr. Andreas will continue to have a thriving ministry, and we count ourselves

blessed to have enjoyed his Liturgies, sermons and kindness for the last three years.

The Cathedral Community will host a farewell reception for Fr. Andreas on Sunday

November 27th immediately following the ONE Divine Liturgy. !!!

Fr. Andreas would like to convey his sincere thanks to the Cathedral of St. Paul community for

their support and prayers.

Farewell Reception for Father Andreas All are invited to attend a farewell reception for Fr. Andreas on Sunday, November 27th

following the one Divine Liturgy that we will celebrate on that day. Orthros will begin at 7:45 a.m.

followed by Divine Liturgy at 9:00 am. Light refreshments will be offered in the Cathedral Center.

The 300 Many people are familiar with 300, the recent movie about King Leonidas and the 300 Spartans

who took their famous stand against tens of thousands of Persians at the battle of

Thermopylae. The Spartans were excellent warriors because they focused on their role as

soldiers to the exclusion of all else. Part of their training for the military involved learning to

disdain material goods. Accordingly, Lycurgus, the Spartan lawgiver, decreed that there would

be no gold coins in all of Sparta. Rather, all gold was to be in the form of nails. This way, any

Spartan soldier attempting to hoard pockets full of gold would be sorely pricked in the

process. In truth, a life spent pursuing the material can prove painful in the long run. Be careful

not to become too enamored with the things of this world. Focus rather on the spiritual realm

and the eternal struggle we have been called to pursue. For here alone will we find true victory

and true fulfillment.

One aspect of wise stewardship, of the wise management of Gods gifts, is to share it with those in need. [Is this not what we are commanded to do by Christ, Who says that we will be judged on

how readily we fed the hungry, clothed the naked, gave drink to the thirsty, etc., in response not

only to their needs, but also in response to our willingness to acknowledge His very presence in

them?] If we have more than we can possibly need or use, and we know of others who have

nothing, is not withholding Gods gifts to us from them theft?

GOYA (Greek Orthodox Youth of America) GOYA will meet on Mondays in the Cathedral Center at 8:00pm. We have a lot of fun and exciting

Spotlight on Ministries Throughout the year we will be acknowledging different clubs, organizations and ministries that

have made a difference in our community at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Paul. Without

our Stewardships, these ministries, clubs and organizations would not be possible. We want our

parishioners to become familiar with these different clubs, organizations and ministries that have

had a positive impact on our community.

This week, the Spotlight is on: The Homebound Ministry

The Homebound Ministry was founded in 2002 as a special organization for those parishioners of

the Cathedral of St. Paul with medical restrictions. It became apparent that many of these

parishioners with special needs did not attend the Divine Liturgy on Sunday and therefore the

Homebound Ministry was established to reach out to these individuals.

Several times a year Father Luke and Father Andreas conduct the Divine Liturgy for them so they

can receive Holy Communion. This is always held on a Saturday for the convenience of their

families and caregivers. Following the Liturgy, they enjoy a luncheon in the Cathedral Center

which is prepared by Lou Patrickakos and his volunteers.

To make it safe for our parishioners using wheelchairs and walkers a special ramp was built so

they can enter the Cathedral Center safely. The Homebound Ministry has proven to be an

opportunity for our members to attend the Divine Liturgy, make new friends and to enjoy a

Each year as we consider our Stewardship Commitment, we ask: How much money should I give? Stewardship involves an individual and personal commitment--a commitment that you make to God, and for God. Therefore, the best measure of the proper level of giving is by Gods

standards as presented in the Bible and by our current capabilities and resources.

Bible Study: The Gospel of Luke The next Bible Study sessions are scheduled for Monday, November 14th and Monday,

November 21st at 7pm in the Parish Council Office. All are welcome, even if you have not

previously attended.

Community Christmas Card Make sure you are included in the 25th Anniversary Community Christmas Card of the Greek

Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Paul. This beautiful religious Christmas Card of Byzantine design

will list parishioners, organizations and other friends of the St. Paul Community and will be sent

to over 1100 members and friends on our mailing list. To be included, please complete the

form available in the Cathedral Office and return it by November 27th.

JOY (Junior Orthodox Youth) We will also begin collecting donations for new, or gently used jackets, hats, scarves, gloves and

blankets for our holiday charity. Please look for the donation box outside the Cathedral Center.

Finally, reservations are being accepted for our upcoming movie night scheduled for Friday,

November 18th at Herricks Clearview Cinemas. Tickets must be purchased in advance so please

contact andreapagonis@optonline.net.

Mary Brennan Inn Soup Kitchen On Monday, November 28th, we will sponsor the meal at the Mary Brennan Inn Soup Kitchen.

The cost of the meal is $1,500. We are once again asking for donations to offset the cost of the

sponsorship and for twenty volunteers to help serve on that day. Please see Cathy Pantelides

Preparing for Birth of Christ: The Fast of the Nativity The fast of the Nativity (November 15th through December 24th) is first mentioned historically in

the 7th Century. The only universal fasting rules (canons) of the Church that exist refer to Great

Lent (40 days before Pascha or Easter); which is the most severe fast of the year. The fast of the

Nativity on the other hand, varied in duration and degree of severity throughout the Church. The

Nativity fast is less severe than Great Lent. The following is presented as a guide to fasting during

the 40 days leading to the birth of Christ.

Meat is not to be eaten for the duration (exceptions as explained below).

Wine, Fish and oil are allowed except on Wednesdays and Fridays.

The last 12 days (December 12th - 24th) are to be kept as strict as possible. A strict fast consists of no meat, fish, dairy products, wine and oil.

Todays Epistle Reading The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 7:26-28; 8:1-2

Brethren, it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, blameless, unstained,

separated from sinners, exalted above the heavens. He has no need, like those high priests,

to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people; he did this once

for all when he offered up himself. Indeed, the law appoints men in their weakness as high

priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has

been made perfect for ever. Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high

priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, a minister

in the sanctuary and the true tent which is set up not by man but by the Lord.

At that time, a lawyer stood up to put Jesus to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to

inherit eternal life?" He said to him, "What is written in the law? How do you read?" And he

answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and

with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." And he said

to him, "You have answered right; do this, and you will live."

But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied,

"A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who

stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest

was going down that road; and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. So

likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.

But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was; and when he saw him, he had

compassion, and went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; then he

set him on his own beast and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And the next

day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, 'Take care of him;

and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.' Which of these three,
