SOLMNITY OF CHRIST THE KING

The way to "enter" into God's Kingdom "does not permit shortcuts"; rather, "every person must freely welcome the truth of the love of God. He is Love and Truth and both love and truth never impose themselves: they knock at the door of the heart and mind and, wherever they may enter, they bring peace and joy. This is God's way of reigning; this is His project of salvation, a 'mystery' in the biblical sense of the word, which is a plan that is revealed little by little throughout history." - Pope Benedict XVI

The Feast of Christ the King was established by Pope Pius XI in 1925 as an antidote to secu-larism, a way of life which leaves God out of human kind's thinking and living and organizes our lives as if God did not exist. The feast is intended to proclaim in a striking and effective manner Christ's royalty over individuals, families, society, governments, and nations. It is God, Christ who is to be the One who is King of our hearts, our souls, our bodies, our destiny. (Before the reform of the Roman Calendar in 1969, this feast, of Christ the King, was celebrated on the last Sunday of October.)

Today's Mass establishes the titles for Christ's royalty over humankind: 1) Christ is God, the Creator of the universe and hence wields a supreme power over all things; "All things were cre-ated by Him"; 2) Christ is our Redeemer, He purchased us by His precious Blood, and made us His property and possession; 3) Christ is Head of the Church, "holding in all things the primacy"; 4) God bestowed upon Christ the nations of the world as his special possession and dominion.

Christ the King Sunday celebrates the all-embracing authority of Christ as King and Lord of the cosmos. Today's Mass also describes the qualities of Christ's kingdom. This kingdom is: 1) supreme, extending not only to all peoples but also to their princes and kings, presidents and premiers; 2) universal, extending to all nations and to all places; 3) eternal, for "The Lord shall sit a King forever"; 4) spiritual, Christ's "kingdom is not of this world". - Rev. Rudolph G. Bandas

Today a distrust of authority has gotten worse. Individualism has been embraced to such an extreme, that for many, the only authority is the individual self. The idea of Christ

LA SOLEMNIDAD DE CRISTO

as ruler is rejected in such a strongly individualistic system. Many balk at the idea of kings and queens, believing them to be oppres-sive. Some even reject the titles of "lord" and "king" for Christ be-cause they believe that such titles are borrowed from oppressive systems of government. However true these statements might be (some kings/queens have been oppressive), these individuals miss the point: Christ's kingship is one of humility and service. Jesus said: “You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to become great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:42-45). …and… “Pilate said to Jesus, "Are you the King of the Jews?"... Jesus answered, "My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom did belong to this world, my attendants would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not here." So Pilate said to him, "Then you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say I am a king. For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth.” (John 18:33b, 36-37).

Thus, Jesus knew the oppressive nature of secular leaders/kings, and in contrast to them, he connected His role as king to humble service, and commanded His followers to be ser-vants as well. In other passages of Scripture, His kingdom is tied to His suffering and death. While Christ is coming to judge the nations, His teachings spell out a kingdom of justice and judgment balanced with radical love, mercy, peace, and forgiveness. When we celebrate Christ as King, we are not celebrating an oppressive ruler, but one willing to die for humanity

and whose "loving-kindness endures forever." Christ is the King that gives us true freedom, freedom in Him. Thus we must never forget that Christ radically redefined and transformed the concept of kingship.

All Praise be to You, Christ our King! Amen.

Entonces Pila-to le dijo: “¿Luego tú eres Rey?”

In today’s Gospel, arguably the most important exchange in all of literature, Pilate asks Jesus: “What have you done?” Jesus replies that he testifies to the truth. In the sec-ond reading we are reminded of the essence of that truth: Christ, ruler of all, loves us, frees us from sin, makes us a new kingdom. As we ap-proach the Advent season, this week would be a good time to re-flect on the question: What have we done in our daily lives, in our ac-tions, words, private prayers, and in our interaction with others, to tes-tify that Jesus is Lord?

Liturgy of the Word for Children, “Gather the Children,” 9:30 a.m. Sunday Mass

Were you curious about Gather the Children? Wondering what age group the liturgy is geared? Questioning whether you should you go with your child? Here are some answers!

Children between the school ages of kindergarten and fifth grade are called forth by the presider at the beginning of Mass, then blessed. They follow the Minister of the Word to the chapel, where they sing and hear the reading in age appropriate language. The children return to the church for the beginning of the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Parents are always welcome, but do not have to go with their kindergartners through fifth graders. Preschoolers are welcome, too, but they must be accompanied by a parent.

Questions? You can contact Kara Ladd, Director, Gather the Children, 630-876-4534 (call or text), [email protected]

WISH TREES 2012

The Wish Trees will be go-ing up this year the week-end of November 24-25.

As in years past there will be a variety of tags on the trees to choose from.

Please look closely at the date on the tags; each or-

ganization has a different deadline. In order that small items do not get lost, do not place gift cards under the trees. Instead, please turn these in at the Parish Office. Those groups or individuals who would like to volunteer to bring the gifts after mass down to the storage room in Sebahar Hall, please con-tact Karen Tsaparis at 630-917-0565 or email [email protected].

I would also welcome any volunteers who are available to help with the delivery of the gifts, also.

Thank you.

Volunteers are needed to help children in First Grade

through Eight Grade who are struggling

in school.

Please call Tom Masterson at 630-653-4818

Boy Scout Troop 575

Cub Scout Pack 575, Boy Scout Troop 575, the Knights of Columbus and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul would like to thank everyone who supported our food drive earlier this month. On Sunday No-vember 4th, the scouts collected 4000 pounds of food for the St Vincent de Paul food pantry thanks to

your generous response.

St. John’s Homeless Ministry News!

Another first for St. John’s Homeless Ministry! On Mon/Tues, October 29 and 30, our ministry fully staffed the PADS homeless shelter at St. Isidore’s in Bloomingdale. Sixty-two of our homeless brothers and sisters were housed and fed dinner, breakfast and given a sack lunch to take. The cooks provided delicious and abundant food: dinner featured polish sausage, fried chicken, homemade soup, fresh salad and veggies, desserts and drinks; scrambled eggs, has browns, sausage, cereal, yogurt and beverages satisfied our clients’ morning appe-tites. Gift bags full of toiletries were provided by the Winfield Juniors and the clients offered many expressions of appreciation and thanks for our efforts to make them comfortable. And, for that, we have to give thanks to 81 of the loving and giving members of our Ministry, 32 of which donated food, prepared meals and served our clients, and another 49 who made beds, set out tables and chairs, secured the facility overnight, and then came back to sweep, mop and make shiny clean St .Isidore’s Ministry Center in the morning.

Our next date to staff St. Isidore’s PADS shelter is Mon/Tues, December 31 and January 1! Yes, it’s New Year’s Eve and Day and our homeless brethren will still need food and shelter. We are in need of food and meal donors and volunteers to staff on those dates so please look at your calendars and in your hearts to see if you can give of your time, talent and treasure to St. John’s Homeless Ministry. Contact Rick or Patti Loechl by phone at 630-653-1710 or 630-222-5455 or email us at [email protected] or leave your name and particulars with the Parish Office staff. “Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless . . .”
