DEPARTING 8th JANUARY 2015 FRIENDS OF THE PETRIE MUSEUM 25th ANNIVERSARY TOUR DESERT FRINGES EXPLORED Egyptologist, Lucia Gahlin, is Chair of the Friends of Petrie Museum and is well known for her lively and fascinating talks. Lucia has been leading tours to Egypt for over 20 years and will accompany the group throughout. with Lucia Gahlin Day 1 – Thursday 8th January 2015 Fly London to Cairo with EgyptAir and on arrival transfer to the Movenpick Hotel at Giza for three nights on room and breakfast basis. Day 2 – A full day at Sakkara visiting the Step Pyramid Enclosure, the Serapeum, the tombs of the Butchers and Brothers and the newly opened New Kingdom tombs of Maya and General Horemheb. (BL) Day 3 – Visits to the Eastern Delta for the ‘House of Bastet’ at Bubastis and then to the impressive site of Tanis with its ruined Ramesside Temple. (BL) Day 4 – To the north shore of Lake Qarun. First to the Greco-Roman city of Karanis, then the Middle Kingdom temple remains at Qasr el Sagha. Check in to the Auberge Hotel on the shore of Lake Qarun, for two nights. (BLD) Day 5 – This morning to Qasr Qarun, a temple dedicated to the Faiyum god Sobek. We continue to Wadi el Hitan a World Heritage Site to visit the Valley of the Whales and the Saharan waterfall in Wadi el Ryan. (BLD) Day 6 – Visits to Medinet Maadi, with its Middle Kingdom Temple and then Tebtunis. After lunch we head to Cairo Airport and a flight to Luxor. Check in to the Old Winter Palace, Garden Pavilion Wing, for four nights. (BL) Day 7 – To Karnak to catch up on the latest work and enter the newly opened Mut Temple. Next to the West Bank where we will have lunch before a tour of Medinet Habu, the newly opened temple of Thoth at Qasr el Aguz and the small Temple of Isis at Deir el Shelwit. (BL) Day 8 – To el Kab with its 18th Dynasty rock-cut tombs, the temple of Amenhotep III and ancient inscriptions at ‘Vulture Rock’. On to Wadi Barramiya to enter the Temple of Seti I at Kanais. (BL) NEW ITINERARY In a change to our original programme we are now offering a new itinerary for our Anniversary Tour. We spend some time in Cairo before travelling out in to the Delta and the Faiyum where we find some amazing archaeology from all periods in Egyptian history. On arrival in Luxor we look at many famous sites and visit areas well off the beaten track. We also include a unique chance to see some of the famous Eastern Desert rock art.

Day 9 – Today to Wadi Hammamat to view the many inscriptions on the rock face and many quarried pieces including a shattered sarcophagus. Then on to Wadi Qash, to see 'Site 18' recorded by Hans Winkler in the 1930's. (BL)Day 10 –To Kharga Oasis and the fortress site at Ain Labekha. We have a picnic lunch before continuing to the early Christian Cemetery of Bagawat and the vast fortress of el Deir. Check in to the New Pioneer Hotel for one night on half board basis. (BLD)Day 11– Straight to the Persian Period Hibis Temple followed by the fortress of Qasr el-Ghueita. We also visit the fortress at Dush. After a picnic lunch we drive back to Luxor, and return to the Old Winter Palace, Garden Pavilion, for our last night in Egypt.
