PASTOR’S LETTER The Mysteries of the Rosary, Chapter 45: The Second Luminous Mystery—the Self-Manifesta!on of Jesus at the Wedding of Cana, con!nued…

A#er the Blessed Virgin Mary told Jesus that the couple at the wedding party had run out of wine, he responded to her with the words, “What is that to me and to

you, woman?” So, what does that mean? The phrase, “What is that to me and to you?” translates a common Hebrew expression in ancient !mes. It could have a variety of meanings, depending on the context. It could be an expression of disagreement, a rebuke, or a way of expressing the inten!on to respond to something in one’s own way. In other words, it could be translated as “No way,” “I don’t think so,” “Why are you telling me?,” “Take care of it yourself,” “So what?” or “Don’t worry, I’ll handle it.” Given that Jesus was the perfect Son to Mary, I think the la$er transla!on would be$er express what he meant.

We can always trust Jesus to “handle” whatever comes up as is best. When we bring our concerns to him, we can have a firm confidence that he’ll know the best thing to do and will do it. He may not tell us ahead of !me—just like he didn’t tell his mother that he was going to change the water into wine. But if we wait, something amazing and good will happen.

What about Jesus calling his mother “woman?” We probably haven’t heard any son in our own day call his mother that, so it may sound strange to our ears. But we can be sure that Jesus loved his mother very much and would only have spoken to her with great respect. For him, “woman” must have been a term of affec!on. It could also have been a reference to the first female human being, whom Adam named “woman,” and the fact that Mary, by her “yes” to God through the angel, would bring the Savior to the world and so undo the harmful effects of Eve’s “no” to God when she disobeyed his command to not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. (Genesis 2-3)

In the same way, we can turn to Mary for help with undoing the effects of our own rebellion against God—our own sins. No ma$er how we pray to her—using the Rosary, saying the “Memorare” or Litany of Lore$o, visi!ng one of her Shrines, or simply talking to her from our hearts, in our own words—we can be confident that she will help us heal and grow in virtue. She can also help us learn from our mistakes. Some of the many !tles that our Blessed Mother is affec!onately known by point to these abili!es the Lord

has given her. For example, she is called upon as Our Lady of Good Help; Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Health of the Sick, Undoer of Knots, Refuge of Sinners, Our Lady of Good Counsel, Seat of Wisdom and Virgin Most Powerful.

The Blessed Virgin Mary also helps us by orien!ng us to her Son. Everything she does is meant to point us to Jesus, lead us to Jesus, and help us to follow Jesus, serve Jesus, get closer to Jesus and become like Jesus.

A#er Jesus said to Mary, “What is that to me and to you, woman?”, he added: “My hour has not yet come.” What did he mean by that? Well, about three years later, when he was talking with his disciples at the Last Supper, the night before he was crucified, Jesus used the word “hour” to refer to his passion—that is, his suffering (John 16:32, 17:1). At the wedding of Cana, Jesus was likely poin!ng out that it wasn’t !me for him to be arrested, scourged and crucified yet, and that manifes!ng himself by a miracle would get the ball rolling in that direc!on, so to speak. Miracles would make him well-known and popular and so arouse the jealousy and hos!lity of some of the Jewish leaders.

For those reasons, was Jesus ini!ally hesitant to change the water into wine? Did his human nature cringe at the thought of suffering? It may have—a#er all, it did in the Garden of Gethsemane the night before he was crucified, when he prayed: “Father, if you are willing, remove this chalice from me; nevertheless not my will, but yours, be done.” (Luke 22:42) Maybe Mary’s gentle nudge helped him move forward. On the other hand, maybe Jesus wasn’t hesita!ng at the wedding. Maybe his words were meant to set the stage for the words of his mother to the servants there: “Do whatever he tells you.” His words about his “hour” and so about his passion, in the context of this wedding, could also have been a reference to his future ins!tu!on of the Eucharist, another miracle of transforma!on. The miracle of the Eucharist, in turn, enables another transforma!on—sinners can become saints. Praise God for that!

Your fellow pilgrim though the Rosary, Father Rudolph

SAINT OF THE DAY - BLESSED RICHARD OF HAMPOLE Richard was born around the year 1300 at Thornton, in North Yorkshire, England and died in 1349. He a$ended classes at Oxford University for a while but le# without gradua!ng and returned home. He asked his sister for two of her dresses, out of which he made a robe that resembled the habits worn by hermits. His sister thought he was crazy, so Richard, afraid of how his father might react, le# home and took refuge in a local church. The next day was the Solemnity of the Assump!on, and the priest there allowed Richard to give the homily at Mass. He spoke so well that it moved people to tears and led them to say they had never heard such a good or powerful sermon. A#er Mass, a member of the local nobility, John Dalton, invited Richard to dinner and, having assured himself of his good faith, gave him a place to live on his own estate, as well as food, proper clothing and whatever else he needed. Richard’s biographer wrote that he “began with all diligence night and day to seek how to perfect his life and to take every opportunity to advance in contempla!on and to be fervent in divine love.” Eventually he le# there and moved around from place to place, praying and helping others with his wisdom. He also wrote a lot; about his “unclean and sinful youth,” his !mes of extreme penances a#er that—which he later realized he needed to modify in order to regain his health, transla!ons of the Psalms from La!n into English, and a number of books about the spiritual life. One of these is Incendium Amoris (La!n for “The Fire of Love”), of which he said, “I here s!r all manner of folk to love, and am busy to show the ho$est and supernatural desire of love.” A main theme of his wri!ngs is joy. He writes: “The holy lover of God shows himself neither too merry nor full heavy in this habita!on of exile, but he has cheerfulness with maturity…Laughter, therefore, which is from lightness and vanity of mind is to be reproved, but that truly which is of gladness of conscience and spiritual mirth is to be praised; that which is only in the righteous, and it is called mirth in the love of God.” Blessed Richard of Hampole, pray for us! World-famous Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Fa!ma is Coming to our Parish!

The Church of St. Raphael is hos!ng the world-famous Interna!onal Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Fa!ma on October 7th and 8th. This historic image of Our Lady of Fa!ma has been traveling worldwide since 1947, when it set forth from Fa!ma to bring Our Lady’s message of hope and peace to a world in need.

The statue was blessed by the Bishop of Fa!ma who prayed that Our Lady’s presence would accompany the statue on her travels. In 1952, it was blessed by Pope Pius XII, who commented: “In 1946, I crowned Our Lady of Fa!ma as Queen of the World and the following year, through the Pilgrim Virgin, she set forth as though to claim her dominion, and the favors she performs along the way are such that we can hardly believe what we are seeing with our eyes.”

The statue has visited 100 countries, including Russia and China. Hundreds of favors and graces, including cures, and countless conversions are associated with the image. The presence of this special statue, sculpted by José Thedim based on Sister Lucia's descrip!on of her encounters with Our Lady, is a great gi# to our community.

Please join us to hear the story of Fa!ma, pray with us and allow Our Lady to bring the graces of Fa!ma to all who might not ever be able to make a pilgrimage to Fa!ma, Portugal.
