SeYng the Stage: Illinois Basin - Decatur Project
A collabora2on of the Midwest Geological Sequestra2on Consor2um, the Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM), Schlumberger Carbon Services, and other subcontractors
Inject 1 million metric tons of anthropogenic carbon dioxide at a depth of 7,000 +/- U (2,000 +/- m)
Test geological carbon sequestra2on in a saline reservoir at a site in Decatur, Illinois USA

Social Site Characteriza2on
Technical site characterization informs efforts to design a project to suit the local geologic and other physical conditions.
Social site characterization can also be used to design effective public outreach to suit local conditions.

Individual by Individual
Over the last few years I have become increasingly overwhelmed by how much devastation we have been inflicting on our planet; the melting ice caps, the disappearing Arctic environment wrecking havoc on its inhabitants, pollution causing major health issues, deviation of rain-forests eliminating their oxygen producing ability, the disappearance of species both known and unknown, just to name a few.
I have tried to reduce my carbon footprint and educated my friends and students on how to take care of our planet. I felt like Don Quixote, fighting the unbeatable foe and trying to right the unrightable wrong. I felt so overwhelmed that at times I wanted to give up, but knew I couldn't.
But then I came to the Keystone Workshop and I saw that, because of what you are doing with carbon sequestration, there is hope.

Ques2ons/Comments
Open for public comments/ques2ons Will CO2 storage cause earthquakes/induced seismicity? What happens in the event of earthquakes? Is CCS the same as fracking? Where does the water from the reservoir go? Are you going to contaminate my groundwater? How do you know the CO2 will stay where you put it? Is CCS just an excuse to con2nue to use fossil fuels? What will happen when the project is over? Who is liable if something goes wrong with the project?

Eec2ve public outreach can help iden2fy main concerns Outreach provides no guarantee of public acceptance of CCS Outreach can foster benecial outcome where project developers gain support of well-informed stakeholders who are comfortable with poten2al project risks & benets, and trust project team In absence of outreach eort, public forms own opinions of CCS (may not reect the technical merit of the project) Perceived risks no less "real" for implemen2ng outreach If not addressed, perceived risks can rapidly expand transform into public opposi2on.
