MUSICAL The Musical will be held on THURSDAY 14 SEPTEMBER at HIGHFIELDS CULTURAL CENTRE. Every day students are practising during their lunch breaks. Thank you to all the students for their energy and willingness to make themselves available for practices. Main Characters also have an extra practice every Tuesday afternoon after school. Students who are in our Chorus are continuing to practise their Dances with the Footsteps Group every Thursday afternoon from 1.30 to 3.00p.m. in the Hall. These Footstep Practices will continue for another week. Parents did not have to pay for these sessions as they are part of our Musical Opportunities. In the lead up to the preparation for our Musical, we will only hold Parade every 2 weeks, so we can use the Hall for practise. So Parade will be on the following Wednesdays during this Term. Parade will be held on Wed 16 August, Wednesday 30 Au-gust and finally on Wednesday 13 September. We will also send out reminders about the days for Parade this term on our Skoolbag APP.

SCHOOL PRIORITIES—Say the 5 to Prioritise Reading Quickwrites Number Fact Recall

Attendance Behaviour

All Education Queensland Schools have to develop an Annual Implementation Plan (AIP) every year. This plan is then ratified at our P&C Annual General Meeting. Included in today’s newsletter is the fifth and final priority that Fairview Heights has as an action in our AIP for 2017. Please read and enjoy.

PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS Our Parent/Teacher Interviews have nearly been completed. Mrs Manteuful is conducting her interviews next week. School Report Cards will only be issued to parents/carers if they attend a Parent/Teacher Interview. If parents/carers make some form of contact with teachers, report cards will be issued. If you do not receive your child’s report card, you need to con-tact your child’s teacher, to organize an interview. Parent/Teacher Interviews are very important for parents/guardians to attend. This opportunity to speak with your child/ren’s teacher about their progress is essential in supporting your child/ren’s learning.

PREP ENROLMENTS 2018 Children born 1 JULY 2012—30 June 2013 Parents at Fairview who have younger siblings that are eligible to attend Prep in 2018 please contact the office as soon as possible to enrol your child so we can gauge our future numbers. Interviews have begun and will continue in the upcoming weeks.

SICKNESS Winter is here and so is the Flu season! Parents, if your child has flu symptoms and is unwell, please keep your child at home, so the flu symptoms don’t spread throughout the school. Flu symptoms are high-ly contagious! Please help us keep our students healthy.

RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION If you haven’t finalised your child’s RI BOOK payment of $6.20 please do so by next Friday morning. The churches pay for these books upfront.

SCHOOL OPINION SURVEY The annual online School Opinion Survey is being conducted again. All families, school staff and a random sample of students will be invited to participate. We encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say about what this school does well, and how this school can improve. Access details for the Parent/Caregiver Survey were sent home to-day with the eldest child in the family. These children will receive a blue sheet with instructions and two special codes are included on this sheet. Please be on the look out for this. Parents/caregivers are welcome to complete their survey online at the school. The Computers in the library are available from 8.30 to 9.00am each morning. Survey queries or requests for translations can be directed to Mr Pascoe on telephone 46592888 or email [email protected] Each of the online surveys will be open from Friday 4 August and will remain so until Friday, 25 August.

NATIONAL CONSISTENT COLLECTION OF DATA ON STUDENTS WITH DISABILITY All Australian schools participate in the annual data collection on students with a disability. This data helps teachers, principals and education authori-ties support the participation of students with disability in schooling on the same basis as students without disability. In our last newsletter we includ-ed information about this process. Data will be collected for students that are enrolled at all Australian schools

on the national census date, Friday 4 August.

EVERY DAY COUNTS There are a number of children who are regularly absent from school. Many times these absences are not explained. Legally, students have to attend school and there are processes in place within Education Queens-land, where if absences continue on a regular basis, letters are sent home to parents to inform them about the possibility of pending legal action. Every day certainly does count for a child’s education and we need parents to support the journey of learning for their child/ren. For further information on the importance of regular school attendance, please visit www.education.qld.gov.au/everydaycounts/posters.html

Outstanding NAPLAN Results!!

School NAPLAN results were released to schools yester-day. Individual student reports have not yet been re-leased; they should be arriving at schools in the next couple of weeks. Our school has done extremely well this year. Below is a snapshot of both our Year 3 and Year 5 NAPLAN re-sults over a number of years. The graphs compare Fairview Heights to other Queens-land schools (state and independent). As you can see, our Year 5 students have scored higher than other Qld Schools in Reading, Spelling and Grammar and Punctu-ation. We are similar in Writing and Numeracy (Graph 1) Our Year 3 student results are similar to other Queens-land schools. (Graph 2) GRAPH 1

BEHAVIOUR Strategy Actions

Behaviour We have moved into Tier 2 as part of the Positive Behaviour for Learning School jour-ney. This year brings an even stronger focus on positive behaviour recognition through PODS rewards being given ‘free and frequently’ to students who exhibit positive learning and social behaviours. To support Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) implementa-tion, funding through Investing For Success has enabled us to provide a Behaviour Support Coach, Bec Casey, two days a week. Bec runs the PODS Shop where children regularly come to ‘purchase’ their rewards as well as working closely with teachers, students and par-ents of individual students who are experiencing difficulty regulating their behaviours. Investing for Success Funding continues to fund the Restart program run by PCYC for stu-dents with recurring or long term school suspensions. The provision of air conditioning in all classrooms (through P&C contribution and Investing for Success) has also assisted to improve behaviour and academic outcomes of our stu-dents.

Book Week Wednesday 6 September @ 9:30 in the Hall

TIDDALICK THE FROG: Is visiting our school for Book Week and classes are challenged to come up with ideas to make him LAUGH! The action will be on the hall floor, a bit like ‘Theatre in the Round’. How will we make him laugh? And what will happen when he does? And WHO will be Tiddalick?! Stay tuned for more information next newsletter!

COSTUMES: Children are invited to dress as their favourite story character, or indeed any suitable primary school character they can find ‘in print’. It can be fairy tale characters, action heroes, or even favourite sports people, as there are many sports stories being pub-lished, as well as magazines and of course newspapers. Children are encouraged to bring the book/magazine/comic along to help show their character and to show they have read about the character. Children may also dress to suit the Book Week theme of ‘Escape to Everywhere’. Eg. Add a sign saying “Escape to Hogwarts with Harry!” Certificates will be awarded by their class teacher for the 3 most creative costumes per class.

BOOKS AND SPORT PROMOTION: We will be launching our Books & Sport initiative during Book Week, with triple Literature Pro points for all sport reading. Closer to the time, there will be a Books & Sport display with new sport books for borrowing. We have also invited a special sports star guest to help us launch this initiative. I wonder who this will be!!!? Hint: To do with NRL.

Start planning your costume now!

Happy reading,

Mrs Judy Humphries

Instrumental Music

Congratulations to all the beginners who played in the band on Wednesday – Well done! Remem-ber there is still time to reach the required standard if you want to play in the school band – 10 minutes a day of practising is all it will take! Good luck.

Just a reminder to take your instrument home on Wednesdays – please don’t leave it at school because you have to practise!

MUSICAL Musical practises are all underway and stu-

dents are really doing their best!

Musical T-shirts have been ordered and hope-fully we’ll have them in two weeks.

And that is all for this time! Remember –“

Without Music the world would

be a very sad place” Phil Ryan & Carien Pelcher

The Body, Breath and Energy

The body is like a container. It contains everything we are – our energy, our

thoughts, our feelings, our consciousness, our blood, bones, organs and of

course our breath.

If our posture is poor and the body is collapsed the ribcage is compressed, which

restricts the movement of the diaphragm and reduces the ability of the lungs to

expand. This compromises our natural breathing, meaning we have less oxygen

circulating through our body, which in turn impacts on our energy levels, leaving

us feeling tired and lethargic. How we position our body has a direct affect on our

breath.

Try this:

Slump your posture, round your shoulders forward and drop

your head low. Notice how your breathing feels. Is it shallow or full?

Notice your energy, does it feel lifted and upbeat or heavy and low?

Now ease out of the slump by slowly breathing in and length-

ening your spin. Notice any changes? How does your energy and

breath feel now?

Fun Fact: In humans the size of the left lung is smaller than the right to accom-

modate the heart.

Kind Regards Cherie Hughes

The Fairview Heights P&C would like to announce that they have been able to secure the school a grant through Cadbury Fundraising as one of four winners for our area from term two. We are pleased to have won $250 under the theme of "Live Well, Learn Well". The grant money will be used towards the expansion of the school gardening program (under the guidance of Mrs S). A big thank you to Adam and Katelyn’s mum, Tracey, who has been extremely busy making a fantastic selec-tion of Fathers Day Gifts for our annual Fathers Day Stall.

PE HOMEWORK Prep—Year 3 Classes The new focus for Term 3 for Prep to Year 3 students is Overarm Throwing. Ask your children about their “skateboard feet”. They could also show you “point–step– throw”. Practice is as easy as rolling up an old piece of newspaper into a ball. I look forward to hearing about the practice sessions you have with your child either in the backyard or park. Looking forward to seeing improvements in your childs throwing!!

Al Aston—PE Teacher
