PASTOR’S LETTER A good virus…

COVID-19 news junkies please take note…this column is not about the coronavirus. If you want to read about that, you will have to go elsewhere.

“Sanc!fy Christ as Lord in your hearts” (1 Peter 3:15). What do these

words from this Sunday’s Second Reading mean? Well, they mean a lot of things. In part, Saint Peter is urging his fellow Chris!ans to get to know and love Jesus, trust and follow Him, honor and imitate him, stay close to Him, obey and worship Him, and thank and praise Him.

Those are a lot of abstract verbs…good, but hard to sink your teeth into, so to speak. I don’t know about you, but I can understand abstract concepts be#er when they appear in another human being—a lot like we can understand God be#er because He took on our human flesh and nature and walked among us as Jesus Christ.

Ma#eo Farina is one of these people who shows us what it means to sanc!fy Christ as Lord in our hearts. He was born on September 19, 1990 near the southern Italian city of Brindisi. He died there on April 24, 2009. He was only nineteen years old, but he has a lot to teach people of any age.

Like many other young people, Ma#eo enjoyed playing sports and music. He learned to play some musical instruments—taking a%er his father, who was a musician in his spare !me—and with some friends formed a band called “No Name.” He also had a great interest in chemistry and looked forward to going into environmental engineering. Ma#eo was accustomed to going to Mass with his family and liked reading the Bible. One Lent he made it a point to read the en!re Book of Ma#hew. He prayed the Rosary every day and went to confession once a week. The parish where he lived was under the care of the Capuchin Franciscans. From them he gained a great devo!on to Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Pio of Pietrelcina.

Ma#eo had a dream of Saint Pio when he was nine years old that had a great influence on him. In the dream, the Saint appeared to him and said, “If you manage to understand that he who is without sin is happy, then you have to teach it to others, so that we can all go together happily into the heavenly kingdom.” That dream helped Ma#eo understand what God was calling him to. He wrote, “I hope to succeed in realizing my mission as ‘infiltrator’ among young people, telling them about God, enlightened by Him…I look around me and I want to enter into young

people’s lives quietly, like a virus, infec!ng them with an incurable illness: Love!”

Evangelizing other young people wasn’t always easy. He wrote, “I would like to be able to integrate with my peers without being forced to imitate them in mistakes. I would like to feel more involved in the group, without having to renounce my Chris!an principles. It’s difficult. Difficult but not impossible.”

When Ma#eo was thirteen, his first symptoms of brain cancer appeared. He con!nued to love life, have a strong faith and smile at everyone. When he went into the hospital for surgery or chemotherapy, he encouraged the other pa!ents. During his illness he wrote, “You would like to scream to the world that you would do everything for your Savior, that you are ready to suffer for the salva!on of souls, to die for Him. You will have the opportunity of showing Him your love.” He also wrote, “It is useless to be despondent, we have to be happy and transmit happiness.” As part of wan!ng other people to be happy, Ma#eo started a fund for the missions in Mozambique and sent his savings there. He encouraged his parents to send money to the poor in Africa instead of doing Christmas shopping.

When Ma#eo was seventeen, he fell in love with a girl named Serena, whom he con!nued da!ng un!l his death. He called their chaste rela!onship “the most beau!ful gi% the Lord could give.” But as much as he loved Serena, God was always first in Ma#eo’s life. He wrote, “My God, I have two hands, let one of them be always clasped to you in order to hold you closer in every trial. And let the other hand pass throughout the world if this is your will…as I know you through others, so let others know you through me. I want to be a mirror, the clearest possible, and if this is your will, I want to reflect your light in the heart of everyone. Thanks for life. Thanks for faith. Thanks for love. I’m yours.”

The cancer caused Ma#eo to suffer from headaches, seizures, impaired vision and eventually par!al paralysis. He died at home on April 24, 2009. The cause for his canoniza!on was started seven years later and his remains were moved to the Cathedral of Brindisi. On May 5, 2020, Pope Francis declared Ma#eo to be “venerable,” a step on the way to canoniza!on. I encourage you to ask Ma#eo for his intercession for someone who needs healing of some kind. And may each one of us be a “good virus” like Ma#eo, in whatever way God is calling us to do so.

Yours in Christ, Father Rudolph

THANK YOU for your con!nued support!!

Thank you to all our wonderful and faithful parishioners who have con!nued their generous financial support of the Church of St. Raphael in spite of the suspension of Sunday Masses and collec!ons.

We are picking up and processing the mailed in contribu!ons each week. For those who might appreciate the convenience, St. Raphael does offer electronic giving which eliminates the need to write a check and mail an envelope each week. The easiest way to set up electronic giving is to go to the parish website at www.straphaelcrystal.org and click on the “Online Giving” tab (orange tab on upper right sec!on of the home page). This will take you to the Vanco site where you will be walked through the steps to create an account and set up your contribu!ons.

We appreciate your con!nued prayers and support! All of you are remembered in our prayers each day. God bless you.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, our Catholic parishes and schools are having to adapt at an alarming rate. The ingenuity that adapta!on requires is costly and comes at a !me when collec!ons are in significant decline. In response, the Catholic Community Founda!on of Minnesota — in partnership with Archbishop Hebda — has established the Minnesota Catholic Relief Fund. If you are able to contribute, we encourage you to do so at: www.ccf-mn.org/relief.

SAINT OF THE DAY - SAINT PASCAL BAYLON Pascal was born in 1540 at Torre Hermosa (Spanish for “Beau!ful Land”) in Spain into a family of shepherds. He had very li#le formal educa!on and is said to have taught himself to read while taking care of the flocks of his own family and those of others. He was very prayerful from an early age and when he was twenty-one, moved 200 miles from home to join the Loreto convent of the reformed Franciscans of Saint Peter Alcántara. This austere version of Franciscan life was known for its extreme poverty joined with great devo!on to prayer. Pascal had a great devo!on to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Once when he was in charge of the refectory—the common dining area for the friars—Pascal shut himself in, placed a statue of Our Lady in front of the door and did an elaborate dance in her honor. We know about this from the account of a friar who saw it through a window. Pascal also loved to spend long hours of prayer kneeling in front of the Blessed Sacrament, some!mes late at night and before dawn. Pascal also excelled in obedience and bravery during a !me of religious wars between Catholics and Protestants in France. He was asked to bring some le#ers to the minister general of the Observant Franciscans in that country. He carried out this mission, even though he didn’t speak French. Along the way he suffered a number of a#acks by Protestants, including a stoning in which his shoulder was badly injured. It hurt him for the rest of his life. But he made it safely back home to Spain and con!nued his life as before, which included helping the poor and the sick who came to the friary for help. He died at the age of fi%y-two on the same day of the Liturgical calendar on which he had been born—the Feast of Pentecost. Miraculous cures were reported through his intercession even before he was buried. Saint Pascal Baylon, pray for us!
