NEWS LETTERIssue 18 September 2019

Hello everyone,

It has been another varied and interesting week in school at Longcroft. Around school it has been lovely to see our pupils really getting engaged in their learning. As I have been in classrooms I have seen some fascinating activities which have all in their own way helped to bring learning to life. In

science lessons, it was great to observe pupils learning to analyse leaf structures using microscopes; whilst in English many pupils are currently studing the play ‘An Inspector Calls’, looking at the importance of the historical and political contexts. This will prepare them to make the most of the theatre visit to see a live performance of the script in a few weeks’ time. Art and Drama lessons have also been particularly enjoyable to see this week. Intricate designs and patterning in Art showed how pupils can pay such close attention to detail to achieve truly impressive results. Our Y12s’ critique of techniques used in stagecraft in Drama demonstrated both knowledge and insight too.

Perhaps one of the most interesting parts of the week was looking in depth at the work of the Maths Department. I was able to spend time with Year 7 as they engaged in the practices of Mastery Maths. It was so good to hear pupils engaging in debate about mathematical concepts and working collaboratively to solve problems. The active leaning approaches proved to be both fun and stimulating. Seeing

the whole class completely absorbed in finding the solution to an activity was an interesting reflection of the advantages of this approach to Maths.

It has been a strong week for Rugby too. Congratulations to the Year 9 Boys Team who have had a great start to the season with their 48-6 win over the Malet Team that knocked them out of the semi-final last year. There’s a full report of the game on page 6. Very well done!

Have agreat weekend,

Ms Grant

CONSERVATION PROJECTSaving newly-hatched turtles is also on the agenda for the Malaysia conservation project.

Four types of marine turtles lay their eggs on the beautiful shores of Malaysia. However two species are seriously endangered - Leatherback turtles have declined by more than 99% and Olive ridley turtles have declined by more than 95%, so acting as volunteer rescuers will help to support attempts to save the species for future generations.

Year 10 pupil Albert Smith said, “I wanted to do the expedition because it sounded like fun – different and challenging. I’m looking forward to all of it. Particularly seeing the culture and travelling. I’ve done outdoor activities like ghyll scrambling in the Lake District.”

Josh Brown, also from Year 10, is particularly looking forward to white water rafting which he’s never done before.

Organised in conjunction with World Challenge UK, expeditions such as these give young people opportunities to develop their skills of leadership, resilience and teamwork as they meet exciting challenges. Such life changing experiences will increase confidence and offer a different perspective. We are delighted that our pupils have been offered such an amazing opportunity!

We would love to be going with them!

This year’s Production, Guys and Dolls, takes place on Wednesday 4th and Thursday 5th December in our Theatre. The 1955 film featured stars such as Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando and we are very much looking forward to seeing the result of many hours of rehearsal.

Year 12 student Jude Kemp, who described himself as a veteran of school productions, will play Lieutenant Brannigan. Jude said, “I’m pleased to have got a part and I’m looking forward to it. It’s going to be fun to push my boundaries.”

Brad Willoughby-Parker will play Benny Southstreet. He said, “The show’s going to be a great experience and will open up a lot of opportunities for younger students. We’ll create a great atmosphere and a good reputation for the school. I’m really looking forward to it, and I’m pleased I got such a good part.”

Year 10 pupil Riley Ketley has been cast as Rusty Charlie. Riley said, “I’m happy, but a bit nervous. It’s the first time I’ve

auditioned. I did so because I really like Drama and I want to be an actor when I’m older.”

Ella Markillie from Year 11 said, “It’s a really good experience because everyone gets involved and it’s nice to work together. Mrs Harris and Mr Thomson are so dedicated and that means a lot as well. I’m really looking forward to it as I love performing in front of people.”

Evie Lane has been cast in the role of Adelaide. She told us, “I’m excited, particularly as I have a leading role. It’s a really nice cast and it’s a good atmosphere. Everyone is working hard in rehearsals. I’m pleased Guys and Dolls has been chosen because it’s different to those we’ve done before and it will be a really good musical.”

Longcroft’s Production is always among the highlights of the year and we’re sure audiences will be treated to a fabulous evening’s entertainment!

MEET OUR NEW HEAD BOY!

We are proud to welcome Adam as our new head boy. Adam chose to continue his studies in Longcroft’s Sixth Form due to knowing all his teachers and enjoying a good relationship with them.

In addition he said, “The small class sizes make it more personal so when I need help it’s easier to ask.”

Adam was able to study his chosen subjects – History, Politics and Psychology. He plans to apply to read Politics at university, with Leeds and York his preferred choices at the moment.

Adam saw the role of Head Boy as a good stepping stone to an eventual career in politics. Initially he plans to enter the field of political journalism to increase his understanding while aspiring to become an MP in time. Politics attracts him as he likes to help people and to be involved in making important decisions.

Honoured to have been elected Head Boy, Adam was surprised due to the strength of the field.

This year he is hoping to lead fundraising for improved IT and study facilities and sports equipment to ensure Sixth Form students are able to effectively balance work and leisure time. He said, “If I can change one little thing I can say I made a difference.”

We’re sure Adam will fulfil the role with pride and do an excellent job!

Adam also featured in our May Newsletter when he met MP Graham Stuart on his visit to

Longcroft

NEWS LETTERIssue 18 September 2019

The Year 9 Boys Rugby Team got off to a flying start to the season, avenging their semi-final cup defeat by Malet Lambert at the end of last year.

Full back Alex Argent Moss opened the scoring, racing on to a neat inside pass from captain Jack Charles, who added the conversation to make it 6 – 0. Harrison Glendinning had an excellent game and scored the first try of his hattrick, sprinting the long way around the length of the field to out run the chasing defence. Year 8 pupil Luke Foreman finished off a good move in the corner just before half time. With Charles converting all 3 tries Longcroft went in at half time with an 18 – 0 lead.

Malet Lambert started a comeback and scored early in the 2nd half. However this was short lived as Longcroft stepped up another gear after Glendinning scored another full length effort, this time from an interception. He then turned provider, gifting a try to the impressive prop,

Tom Rae who troubled the defence all game with his blockbusting runs. Charles controlled the game magnificently, kicking the corner for Rae to catch cleanly and put down just as he crossed the line. Gendinning and Rae both completed their hattricks, the latter from a great off load by tenacious hooker, Will Hutchinson.

Jack Charles converted all but one of the tries, most of them from the touchline, giving a final score line of Longcroft 48 Malet Lambert 6.

We’re very proud of you all!
