FROM FATHER PAT'S PEN

I had been developing a reflecon for this fall's

opening column based on some of my reading of

late, when I was confronted instead with a

dawning desire and need to simply express to all

of you my deepest appreciaon and gratude for

your love and support during my recent illness.

The prayers and though-ul expressions have

been such a source of strength, encouragement

and hope for me and for TinaMarie. You are an

amazing group of people.

Moving back into life among you has been a bit

slow and, quite honestly, with some weariness.

But my strength is returning with rapidity, and I

am quite anxious to be engaged in our very busy,

full fall schedule. I do hope you are as well.

Please accept my sincere thankfulness for each

“STUDIES IN THE BIBLE” RESUMES SEPTEMBER 17

We resume our adult Bible study on Wednesday,

September 17 at 3 pm and will connue weekly

through the end of November.

This session will involve an inquiry into the major

prophets, those longer books of the Old

Testament: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentaons,

Ezekiel and Daniel. Once again, this study will be

more of a survey course giving some background

to and basic insight on these key individuals

within the history of Israel.

Everyone is invited to aend this

Bible study. Should there be

interest in changing the day and

me, please contact Fr. Pat (208-

659-2325 or [email protected]).

gathering of ministry and group leaders, along

with interested members of the congregaon,

to coordinate calendars, share informaon,

and plan parish events. All members of the

parish are welcome to aend Parish Council

meengs.

We ask that every group be represented at this

next Parish Council meeng so

PLANNED GIVING PROGRAM KICK-OFF

September 6-7

St. Luke's will be kicking off our Planned Giving Program on the weekend of September 6-7. Planned Giving is intended to provide funds to meet our Congregational Development Plan Goal of raising $500,000 over a period of several years to meet our continuing capital and major maintenance needs, as well as to fund special ministries and outreach.

Planned Giving amounts are over and above our normal yearly operating pledges and budget. Planned Giving can occur either via special gifts of assets in the current time frame or on your passing via a will, trust or other method. We will be presenting Planned Giving opportunities to you over the coming months as well as offering assistance in implementing your gift giving.

Lier Pickup on St. Luke’s

adopted sec'on of I-90,

Saturday, September 13 (Meet at the church at 11 a.m.

a@er the Parish Council Meeng)

Join the Jubilee Ministry team for the fall litter pickup. A core group participates in most of the pickups and new folks join each time to clean up our assigned one mile stretch of I-90 between mileposts 11 & 12.

The Idaho Transportation Department furnishes signs, trash bags and fluorescent green safety vests. Volunteers furnish the labor and their own work gloves. It’s interesting each time to determine who has found the most intriguing item or treasure amongst the roadside trash; there is a trophy for the lucky winner. St. Luke’s has gained at least one member who saw the sign on the freeway and knew that St. Luke’s was here.

Weekly mee'ngs resume Monday, September 8

St. Luke’s Knit One, Pray Too Prayer Shawl Ministry resumes its weekly meetings on Monday, September 8. We meet every Monday morning (September-May) at 9:30 a.m. in the reception area. If you knit or crochet, we invite you to join us. We are a diverse group brought together by prayer and a desire to serve. Everyone is welcome to attend. At the August Prayer Shawl Blessing, I placed my 100th prayer shawl on the altar rail to be blessed. When I first began knitting prayer shawls, I had no set goal but certainly never imagined making this many. So what keeps me knitting? It’s the people who receive my shawls and bless me with their stories. From my first prayer shawl given to a friend of Bob and Marion Bunting to my latest one given to a dear friend battling a mysterious illness and all the people in between, I know them all and keep them in my prayers each day. I remember when I lost my first prayer shawl recipient. As I hugged his widow, she kept telling me how much comfort my prayer shawl had given him, and all I could do was ask her to now let it give her comfort. I move from sadness to joy as I remember the expectant mothers to whom I’ve given prayer shawls and oh, those nine precious babies who have received my prayer shawls at their baptisms. Then there are the many who just want to tell me how much they appreciate their prayer shawls. This ministry has blessed me in so many ways and enriched my life, and it’s my hope to keep knitting forever. If you need a prayer shawl or know someone who does, please do not hesitate to contact me or the office. Jo Clifford (208-755-6926)

Coming to a Parish Hall near you…Episcofollies! Saturday, October 4 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, October 5 at 2 p.m.

This month, many parishioners are working hard to make our 2014

“Episcofollies” the best ever. Lines are being memorized, musicians are

tuning up, and sewing machines are working on costumes....

For those of you who may not know about or have not aended one of these biannual

performances, this is an event that you will not want to miss. The first Episcofollies was in 2006. In

past years, it has been a fundraiser for Dr. Carole Denison, who was a missionary in Honduras. She

has since returned to Spokane. We have raised money for Fresh Start, for under-privileged children

in Boys and Girls Club, and for Coeur d’Alene Homes.

This year, the Episcofollies will be a benefit for the North Idaho Violence Prevenon Center

(formerly the Women’s Center). The North Idaho Violence Prevenon Center has been assisng

families in crisis since 1977. It is a non-profit agency and its services are provided free of charge.

The Center offers emergency shelter for men, women and children or families who are vicms of

domesc violence and who may be in imminent danger. They offer counseling and support groups

as well as educaon programs, which include presentaons in schools. They also provide

intervenon services to survivors of domesc violence and/or sexual assault.

All of the performers in the Episcofollies are St. Luke’s members. You are guaranteed to be

impressed with the talent and courage of our congregaon. These are people you will recognize as

those you have seen in the pews on Sunday or in the choir. They may look a bit different, but they

are the same wonderful individuals whom we are so blessed to have at St. Luke’s. They will be busy

praccing in the days to come, so be sure to put these dates on your calendar: Saturday, October 4

at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, October 5 for a 2 p.m. manee.

I can promise you it will be an unforgeable experience. Most of all, it will produce much laughter

and lots of memories. Don’t miss it! See you there!

RECIPE CORNER

This next year we plan to share some of the recipes from St. Luke’s cookbook, “Therefore,

Let Us Keep The Feast,” that was published and sold in 2002. Cookbook commiee members

were Jane Brooks, Marion Bunng, Glenda Empsall, and Karen Skelton. This cookbook was

sponsored by both St. Luke’s and St. Margaret’s Guilds and sold out very quickly! Some of

the recipes we are going to share were submied by parishioners who are no longer with us,

but are held dear in our memory. We hope that you will enjoy each and every recipe and we

plan to give a short bio of the person who submied the recipe so you have a sense of who the person was

and how they contributed to St. Luke’s.

The following recipe was not in the cookbook, but Maxine Asher was a longme member of our parish.

These brownies are wonderful and are a favorite of her family. Maxine was an extremely accomplished

arst, and both she and her daughter, Carol Anderson, were very involved in St. Luke’s for many years.

Carol was involved in the Sunday School program. ENJOY!

BUTTERMILK BROWNIES

Mix together: 2 c. flour, 2 c. sugar, ½ t. salt; set aside. In a saucepan, heat 2 scks margarine, 1 c. cold

water and ¼ c. cocoa. Bring to a boil and cool, then add to flour/sugar mixture.

Next step: Combine ½ c. buermilk, 2 beaten eggs, 1 t. vanilla and 1 t. baking soda with above

ingredients and mix thoroughly.

Pour into a 16”x10”x1” jelly roll pan and bake at 400° F for 20 minutes. Watch — may be done in less

me depending on oven.

Fros'ng (frost while brownies and fros'ng are both hot):

In a saucepan, heat 1 sck margarine, ¼ c. cocoa and ½ c. buermilk. Bring just to a boil. Remove from

heat and gradually add 2 lbs. powdered sugar (usually less), beang a@er each addion. To this frosng

mix, add 1 t. vanilla, a pinch of salt and ½ to 1 c. nuts or coconut, if desired. Spread over brownies, cool,

eat and enjoy!
