23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Theme: Paying One’s Debts.
The words of St. Paul today in our second reading are troubling. We are a nation in debt and
many of us have credit cards and a mortgage to be paid every month. St. Paul writing to the
Romans (and we modern Romans as well), indicates that life has its debts to pay. However,
the debts of which Paul speaks are of a different sort than those that come once a month in
the mail. For Paul, we are to “owe no debt to anyone except the debt that binds us to love one
another. He who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law.” These words of St. Paul seem,
however to contain mixed signals. How can we be told that love is a debt, an obligation?
Haven’t we been told that love is free, spontaneous, with no strings attached? Now, we are
told to pay our debts concerning love. What is Paul up to?
The nature of a debt is that we are under obligation to do what we have promised. Through
our baptism into Christ we are under the obligation to love as he loved. As a member of the
community of faith which proclaims Jesus as Lord, we must show the kind of love which
gives public witness that we are his disciples. Such love fulfills and perfects all the require-
ments of the law. If one truly loves in imitation of Jesus, the law has been totally carried out
since “love never does any wrong to the neighbor, hence love is the fulfillment of the law.”
The debt of love is never easy. It is just the opposite of the debt of a credit card or mortgage.
The debt of love reminds us that we reap what we sow . We are called to pay the debts of
love today so that daily we may grow into the full measure of Christ. What we do today
forms the foundation for what we will do and become tomorrow. To love as Christ loved
means that all times we must speak the truth even when it causes momentary discomfort.

Tema: Pagar las deudas.
Las palabras de San Pablo hoy en nuestra segunda lectura son preocupantes. Somos una
nación en deuda y muchos de nosotros tenemos tarjetas de crédito y una hipoteca a pagar
cada mes. San Pablo escribiendo a los romanos (y también a los romanos modernos),
indica que la vida tiene sus deudas para pagar. Sin embargo, las deudas de las que habla
Pablo son de un tipo diferente de las que vienen una vez al mes en el correo. Para Pablo,
debemos "no debemos deuda a nadie sino la deuda que nos obliga a amarnos los unos a
los otros. El que ama a su prójimo ha cumplido la ley ". Estas palabras de San Pablo
parecen, sin embargo, contener señales mezcladas. ¿Cómo se nos puede decir que el
amor es una deuda, una obligación? ¿No nos han dicho que el amor es libre, espontáneo,

lo tanto el amor es el cumplimiento de la ley.
La deuda del amor nunca es fácil. Es justo lo contrario de la deuda de tarjeta de crédito o
hipoteca. La deuda del amor nos recuerda que cosechamos lo que sembramos. Hoy estamos
llamados a pagar las deudas del amor para que cada día crezcamos en la medida plena de
Cristo. Lo que hacemos hoy es la base de lo que haremos y llegaremos a ser mañana. Amar
como Cristo amado significa que todos los tiempos debemos hablar la verdad aun cuando
cause una incomodidad momentánea.

(Continuación de la Pág. 1) Profeta (Ezequiel 33: 7-9) en nuestra primera lectura es un "vigilante
para la casa de Israel." Esto significa que él debe corregir y desafiar a
todos los que se apartan del pacto. Esta es una responsabilidad increíble
ya que Dios tiene a Ezequiel responsable de hablar con audacia. La
persona que escucha las palabras de Dios y se niega a arrepentirse mo-
rirá en su culpa. Si el profeta se niega a hablar la palabra de Dios (por
temor, amor al respeto humano, dinero), sufrirá las mismas consecuen-
cias que la persona mala que se niega a cambiar. Tanto el predicador
como el oyente son responsables de la palabra de Yahweh.
Las relaciones nunca están libres de desacuerdos, de fallas o de daños.
Tampoco nuestra relación debe estar sin la deuda que debemos de
amarnos unos a otros. Jesús en nuestra lectura del Evangelio (Mt 18: 15
-20), nos recuerda que la corrección fraterna es necesaria. Mostramos
gran amor cuando tomamos tiempo para corregir y disciplinar. Mostra-
mos una gran madurez cuando somos capaces de aceptar la corrección.
Esta necesidad de corrección fraterna es importante para padres, pasto-
res, cónyuges y amigos. Hoy somos a menudo que el amor significa
que usted nunca impone sus valores o tiene ninguna expectativa para el
otro. Cada individuo es libre de ser y hacer lo que él o ella se siente.
Esto es trágicamente falso. El verdadero amor exige que hablemos y
defendamos lo que creemos que es verdadero y bueno.
No somos amigos si observamos silenciosamente a nuestro amigo hun-
dirse más profundamente en alcohol, drogas o relaciones destructivas.
No somos buenos padres si buscamos la paz a cualquier precio, y por
eso no "nag" a nuestros hijos acerca de sus, fechas o amigos. No somos
un pastor responsable si no cambiamos nuestra congregación para amar
y perdonar. Y no somos un buen cónyuge si dejamos de sacar lo mejor
y esperamos lo mejor del otro. El amor exige que tomemos riesgos
porque valoramos al otro ya nuestra relación.
Las deudas de nuestra tarjeta de crédito e hipoteca deben ser pagadas
una vez al mes. Sin embargo, las deudas que nos debemos el uno al otro
vienen cada día. No podemos permitirnos perder un pago.
Querido Dios, gracias por ser un Dios amoroso y misericordioso. Gra-
cias por habernos ofrecido el perdón y el don de una nueva vida en ti.
Gracias porque tu amor es perfecto, nunca falla, y que nada puede sepa-
rarnos de tu amor. Amén .
(Continued from page 1) Prophet (Ezekiel 33: 7-9) in our first reading is a “watchman
for the house of Israel.” That means that he must correct and
challenge all who would stray from the covenant. This is an
awesome responsibility since God holds Ezekiel accountable for
speaking out boldly. The person who hears God’s words and
refuses to repent will die in his or her guilt. If the prophet re-
fuses to speak God’s word (because of fear, love of human re-
spect, money), he or she will suffer the same consequences as
the wicked person who refuses to change. Both the preacher and
hearer have responsibility to the word of Yahweh.
Relationships are never free of disagreement, faults or hurts.
Neither should our relationship be without the debt we owe to
love one another. Jesus in our gospel reading (Mt: 18: 15-20),
reminds us that fraternal correction is necessary. We show great
love when we take time to correct and discipline. We show
great maturity when we are able to accept correction. This need
for fraternal correction is important for parents, pastors, spouses
and friends. Today we often feel that love means you never
impose your values on or have any expectation for the other.
Each individual is free to be and do what he or she feels like.
This is tragically false. True love demands that we speak out
and stand up for what we believe is true and good.
We are not friends if we silently watch our friend sink deeper
into alcohol, drugs or destructive relationships. We are not a
good parent if we seek peace at any price, and so don’t “nag”
our children about their dates or friends. We are not a responsi-
ble pastor if we fail to change our congregation to love and
forgive. And we are not a good spouse if we fail to bring out the
best and expect the best from the other. Love demands that we
take risks because we value the other and our relationship.
The debts of our credit card and mortgage must be paid once a
month. However, the debts of love we owe one another come
each day. We cannot afford to miss a payment.
Dear God, thank you for being a loving and gracious God.
Thank you that you have offered us forgiveness and the gift of
new life in you. Thank you that your love is perfect, it never
fails, and that nothing can separate us from your love. Amen.

on the First Friday of every month.
Come and spend a hour with Our Lord. Please use the sign-

Healing Mass Mass for Healing will be at 6:00 PM every First Friday after
Eucharistic Adoration.

Catechetical Sunday Each year, Catechetical Sunday is celebrated on the third Sunday of September; we are celebrating it today, Sep-tember 10. The Theme this year is: “Living as Missionary Disciples.” Those who the Community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commis-sioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a won-derful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mis-sion as a community of faith. We are happy and grateful to welcome back our cate-chists and assistants for 2017-2018.

NUESTRA SEÑORA DE GUADALUPE El pasado 3 de Septiembre, nuestra Cofradía Guadalupa-
na inició el rezo del rosario en los hogares en prepara-
ción para la celebración de la Fiesta de Nuestra Señora
de Guadalupe.
El grupo trae la imagen de la Virgen, reza el rosario y
ora con la familia y sus invitados. La imagen se queda en el hogar
de la familia esa noche y después continúa su peregrinaje con la
próxima familia.

SHARING CHRIST
SEPTEMBER 12 TO OCTOBER 24
OLGC SCHOOL AUDITORIUM
Sharing Christ is a seven-week experience where
all are invited to hear the Good News and person-
ally encounter Jesus Christ. Sharing Christ con-
sists of seven weekly sessions on Tuesdays at 7:00
PM with a retreat day on October 21st . The weekly
sessions include: prayer time, a video teaching, and
small group discussion. We are excited to bring the
Sharing Christ experience to our Parish. If you are
interested in volunteering or attending, we will have
sign up sheets in the back of the church and the par-
ish office. You may also sign up on the OLGC
website – olgcsi.org.

. PASTOR INSTALLATION
On October 1st, Fr. Ambrose will be installed officially as
pastor of Our Lady of Good Counsel. There will be a mass at
3PM on that Sunday. A reception will follow in the school
gym. In order that we may prepare appropriately, we need to
know how many people will attend the mass and reception.
There is a sign-up sheet in the church vestibule and another in
the parish office. Please sign the sheet or leave your name
with the parish secretary if you intend to join us in this cele-
bration.
Religious Education Classes begin next Sunday Septem-
ber 17th. If your child is not registered they will not be
allowed in the classroom .
ATTENTION ALL CONFIRMATION CANDIDATES 2017 Next meeting will be on Wednesday, September 13 at 7 PM in the school auditorium. Confirmation Robes will be dis-tributed at this meeting.

Pack 77 OLGC Adult Volunteer leaders are getting ready
for another exciting season of Cub Scouts. We are cur-
rently at over capacity membership for Kindergarten and
First Grade programs. We still have spots available for
2nd thru 5th grades. If interested please contact Irene

INSTALACION DEL PASTOR
El 1 de octubre, el Padre Ambrosio será instalado
oficialmente como pastor de Nuestra Señora del
Buen Consejo. Habrá una misa a las 3 pm ese Do-
mingo. Una recepción seguirá en el gimnasio de la
escuela. Para que podamos prepararnos adecuada-
mente, necesitamos saber cuántas personas asistirán a
la misa ya la recepción. Hay una hoja de inscripción
en el vestíbulo de la iglesia y otra en la oficina parro-
quial. Por favor firme la hoja o deje su nombre con la
secretaria de la parroquia si tiene la intención de unir-
se a nosotros en esta celebración.
Las clases de Educación Religiosa comienzan el 17
de Septiembre. Si su Hijo (a) no esta registrado no
se le permitirá entrar al salón de clases.
