Department of Elder Affairs ~ Mission Statement The Department of Elder Affairs is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life

for senior citizens in the City of Springfield.

Funding for many of our wonderful programs and activities is provided through Council on Aging grants

Dear Readers,

The Raymond A. Jordan Senior Center is alive with activity! If you haven’t stopped in for a visit, I urge you to do so because you are missing out on an opportunity to brighten your lives! Throughout the day I walk the floors of this magnificent place and I find myself smiling…back at the smiling faces of the seniors who come, and also because I see so many people taking advantage of the great work our Elder Affairs Department is doing.

The S.H.I.N.E., SCSEP and Outreach Divisions have been so hard at work aiding our aging residents with every aspect of their daily lives, with plans for expansion that will help to serve even more people! Exciting new programs will be coming out this spring season to round out the senior experience, as well as the computer lab and fitness center providing ways to keep your minds and bodies fully engaged.

Many, many people are talking and we are listening! Come by soon and see what all the talk is about. Elder Affairs…where we encourage EVERYONE to create their own handbook for aging well via services that support living better.

Warm Regards,

Sandy

The Flu

By: Jack Garr, Stacy Shackleton, and Aly Bruneault

The flu is a viral infection that affects your lungs, nose, and throat. It is spread very easily and can be deadly to older adults. Although it is very contagious, it is preventable. Ways to prevent the flu is by washing your hands with warm water and soap, cough into your arm, do not rub your eyes, get vaccinated, and stay at home if you have the flu. Some signs and symptoms of the flu include congestion, fatigue, fever/chills, nausea/vomiting, muscle aches, and cough. People tend to view the flu as an illness everyone has common knowledge about, however there are myths about the flu. Those myths are that the flu shot makes you sick, once you’re 65 you do not need to get vaccinated, healthy people do not need to be vaccinated, and the vaccine 100% prevents the flu. The flu can be a serious illness and should not be taken lightly.
