THE 2ND ANNUAL PILLAR OF TIKKUN OLAM AWARD PRESENTED TOSusan & Jerry Slavet

Susan and Jerry Slavet have been dedicated and activemembers of Temple Beth Elohim for over 35 years. They havebeen involved in many aspects of temple life and served asinstrumental leaders in multiple TBE Tikkun Olam projectsand social action initiatives. Susan guided the resettlementefforts for hundreds of Russian Jewish families coming toAmerica. Jerry, on his famous red truck, has led our annualoutdoor Tashlich service for over 30 years! Together, theyspearheaded multiple community auctions to benefit ourtemple. Their joint “can do” mentality is contagious.

Beyond our TBE community, Jerry is co-founder of the national non-profit From the Top, a PBS national televisionand NPR radio program supporting dynamic young classicalmusicians from around the world. For over 15 years, Jerry’s leadership has provided scholarships to hundreds of musicians with financial need, and a strong communityoutreach and leadership development component, which offers music enrichment and positive role models to kids ofall backgrounds, while developing tomorrow’s arts leaders.Jerry is dedicated to celebrating pre-collegiate musiciansthe same way we make heroes of young athletes and encouraging them to give back to their communities with their talents.

Over the decades, Susan and Jerry’s contributions to ourtemple community and commitment to the non-profit sectorexemplifies Tikkun Olam through their determination andjoy. We are honored to present Susan and Jerry Slavet with TBE’s 2nd Annual Pillar of Tikkun Olam Award.

This evening, we present the 2nd annual Pillar of Tikkun OlamAward, Making the World a Better Place, to Susan and JerrySlavet. Dedicated Temple Beth Elohim members for over 35 years, Susan and Jerry have been instrumental leaders inmultiple TBE Tikkun Olam programs and social action initiativesboth at Temple Beth Elohim and beyond our own community. We are proud to recognize Susan and Jerry’s extraordinarycommitment, dedication and meaningful involvement towardstheir multiple passions.

We would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to our wonderful Evening to Remember committee of volunteers whohave made this evening possible. They have given countlesshours of their time to prepare for this evening! Our gratitude isextended to all of them for their dedication to our communityand tonight’s success.

The proceeds raised from tonight’s event directly support theTemple Beth Elohim community. Funds raised will help providemembership to all, regardless of financial means; high qualitycommunity-wide programs, religious education for all ages andpastoral care for those in need. Temple Beth Elohim’s Pillar of TikkunOlam – Making the World a BetterPlace Award was established in2012 to recognize the significantcommitment and sustained contribu-tions of an individual or organizationin the greater Boston area. This honored individual or organizationhas successfully proven the pursuit of fostering interfaith understanding,encouraging humanitarianism,and/or promoting a social justiceagenda to bring healing to our fractured world. This award honorsthose who demonstrate a passionand willingness to build a body ofgood works in the pursuit of socialchange through personal, religious,and/or professional commitments.Recipients must be of good characteras evidenced by involvement withintheir communities; must speak withauthority as a result of their efforts;and must be acknowledged advocates for communal/world repair in any of the following realms:activism, business, education, entertainment, leadership, programming or religion.

The first recipient of the Award was Rabbi Joel L. Sisenwine.
