THE PTERIDOPHYTE FLORA OF PULAU TIOMAN,PENINSULAR MALAYSIA

ABSTRACT. - A total of 154 species of ferns and fern-allies belonging to 73 generaand 26 families were recorded from Tioman Island. The largest genus is A s p l e n i u mwith 14 species, followed by Selaginella with 8 species and Cyathea and Pteri.~achhas 6 species. Species-wise the number of the pteridophytes of the island represents23.5% of the total in Peninsular Malaysia.KEY WORDS. - Pteridophytes, Pulau Tioman; checklist

INTRODUCTIONPulau Tiom an is situated in between 02 " 43' to 02 " 54 'N latitude and 104 " 07 ' to 104' 3 .5 'Elongitude in South China Sea and about 32 km southeast of peninsula coast. Historically,Pulau Tioman w as used as the trade route between Middle East and China since 1475 (M ohd .M okh tar, 19 87). Th e flora of Pulau Tioman had been explored by British botanist, H. N.Ridley in 1889 who had collected some specimens at Teluk Nipah on the west coast ofPulau Tio m an. Since then. various collectors came to observe and collect the plants on thevarious parts of the island; Tan jung Duata (Robinson & Burkill, 19 15), Teluk Juara (R obinson& Burkill, 1915 ; Kloss, 19 16. Stone et al., 197 4),Gu nung Kajang (Henderson, 19 27; Kadim& Noor, 1962; Samsuri. 1973; Soepadmo & Lee. 1974 ); Pulau Tulai and Tanjung R uit(Corner, 1935), Gun ung Lalang (Kadim & Noor, 196 2); Sungai Ayer Besar (K adim & Noor,1962, Stone et al., 1974); Buk it Penak (Sam suri, 197 2). From the abov e collection trips theymanaged to collect about 112 species, 62 genera and 23 families of ferns and fern-alliesfrom various parts of the island (Lee et al., 1 97 7). T he first collection by staff and studentsof Universiti Kebangsaan M alaysia was made in August and Septem ber 1989 along K amp ungPaya to the summit of Gunung Kajang, Tekek-Juara Trail and Air Batang Centre to SalangBay by one us, Razali Jaman and a student, Zulkifli M oha m ad. They collected about 149specimens of ferns and fern-allies which consist of 95 species from 24 families and 59 generawhich include 39 species as new records for Pulau Tioman (Zulkifli et a]., 1996).

Holttum (1968) reported that Leptochilus mino r was collected on ce in Tiomanby Ridley in 1889 but hadn't been seen since then.Hills Dipterocarp ForestsThis vegetation co vers from the elevation of 30 0 m up to 750 m, mostly d omin ated byseraya, Shorea curtisii and keruing bulu, Dipterocarpus crinitus. Blechn um finlaysonianum(Blechnaceae), Cynthea hyn eno des , Cyathea eriophora (Cyatheaceae), Asplenium normale,A. sublaserpitiifolium and A. un ilaterale (Aspleniaceae) w ere observe d in sheltered or semi-sheltered habitats. Epiphytic Asplenium (Asp leniaceae) dom inated the boulders and also ontree branches. T he species include A. affine, A. robusrum, A. scolopendrioides, A. salignumand A. nidus var. nidus and A. phyllitidis spp. malesicum.This vegetation co vers almo st the higher peaks in the island in range of the altitude between750-1200 m such as Gunu ng Kajang (10 30 m), Gunu ng Seperok (944 m) and an unnamedpeak (946 m) etc. Amo ngst the com mon est ferns and fern-allies found on the higher elevationof the island are Dipteris conjugata (Dipteridaceae), Cynthea hym enodes (Cyatheaceae),Humnta repens (Davalliaceae), Huperzia phlegmaria (Lycopodiaceae) and Ctenopterisblechnoides (Grammitidaceae). Nea r the summ it, the ende mic ferns of Penins ular M alaysiasuch as Taenitis dimorpha (Adiantaceae), Cheiropleuria bicuspis (Cheiropleuriaceae) andHistiopteris incisa (Dennstaedtiaceae) occur on Gun ung K ajang. Th e resam (Gleicheniaceae)mem bers were found growing in several places. Two species of Dicranopteris (D . curraniiand D. linearis var. montana) and Diplopterygiurn longissimum, Gleichenia microphyllaand Sticherus truncatus were fou nd in this area but not found elsew here at the low er altitude.Lindsaea parasitica, Tapeinidiurn luzonicum var. luzonicum and Tapein idium pinnatum(Dennstaedtiaceae). Diplazium simplicivenium a new record for Pulau Tioman which iscommonly encountered on the south eastern part of Pulau Tioman especially on GunungSeperok and Peak's height 370 m (Upper Sungai Benuang).

CHECKLIST OF FERN S AND FERN-ALLIESAll voucher specimens were lodged at the Herbarium, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia(UK MB ). A few living specim ens were introduced and planted in the University Ferns G arden.The current enumeration is the updated version of the earlier checklist (Lee et al. , 1977;Zulkifli et al. , 1996) and the nomenclature followed Parris and Latiff (1997).
