FOREWORD

As Seventh Day Adventist reformers, we are keenly aware of the shortness of time remaining before the return of our Lord Jesus Christ in theclouds of heaven. In the religious world at large and among Adventists inparticular, various winds of doctrine are blowing-many of them centeredaround the second coming of Christ. Indeed, our Saviour's advent is to bethe greatest event ever to occur in human history, and how essential it is thatwe all consider carefully how this sobering reality should be affecting ourlives both individually and as a church.

We are living in a solemn hour-one in which mere professions of godliness, signs and wonders, outward ceremonies, theological prowess and timesetting tables cannot save our souls. Rather, there is one basic truth soon to berealized worldwide: that only the pure in heart shall see God (Matthew 5:8).

Purity of heart, holiness of mind, are the prerequisites for translation toheaven. These qualities are not options to be perhaps admired yet lightlyregarded, but instead are distinctive characteristics absolutely necessary foradmission to the heavenly courts. Neither faith in Christ alone nor mere human effort and good works can ensure our salvation, but only the savingfaith of Jesus-that "faith which worketh by love" (Galatians 5:6).

"All true reformation begins with soul-cleansing. It is by the washing ofregeneration and the renewing of the mind through the power of the HolySpirit, that a change is wrought in the life. By beholding Christ we becomechanged." -Sons and Daughters of God, p. 105.

Many Sabbath school quarterlies have dealt with current doctrinal issues, theological questions, Bible experiences, and last-day events-and these, ofcourse, are all excellent topics in their sphere. But the real requirement to beamong the 144,000 sealed ones-the real gist of the matter of salvation in thisantitypical Day of Atonement-involves a question which we all must askourselves personally: Does my character reflect the image of Jesus fully?

The process by which our thoughts and feelings are gradually transformedfrom sin and degradation into the likeness of Christ is a miraculous demonstration to the universe of the power of a beneficent Creator. It reveals theabundant fountains of His omnipotent mercy in redeeming the unworthy objects of His supreme love to be restored to the image of His spotless purity.

Dear brethren, let us consider the universal issues at stake in the greatcontroversy, and cooperate with our Lord in this grand work of redemptionby dying to self and living for Christ. As we go through these Sabbath BibleLessons day by day, let it be our earnest purpose to abide as co-laborers withGod in His merciful plan to save us from destruction-and from our own selves-by purifying our hearts in obedience to the truth.

,Special Project Offering

for the church in Toronto, Canada

Canada-the second largest country in 'the world, a land of beautywith its many great lakes, vast forests, never-ending prairies, theRocky Mountains of British Columbia, and much more-has beenthe land of hope for many immigrants. Nearly half of all refugeeswho seek permanent residency come from Asia; the other half immigrate from Europe (almost 25%) and from other parts of theworld. Today the population stands at just over 27 million.

Ottawa is the capital of the nation and the official languages areEnglish and French. Toronto is the capital of the Ontario provinceand is the largest metropolitan area.

Religion plays an important role in the lives of a vast majority ofthe people (92.7%). There is no official religion. Those who are loyaladherents and who actually practice the religion of their choice areaffiliated to: Roman Catholicism 46.5%; Protestant 41.2%; EasternOrthodox 1.2%; Jewish 1.2%; Muslim, Hindus, Sikhs, non-religiousand others 9.6%.

Canada is well known to many of our brethren around the world. In 1983 we had the privilege of hosting the SDA Reform MovementGeneral Conference Session on the site of the Puslinch church. Thebrethren here had an opportunity to meet many representativesfrom different parts of the world.

For several years the East Canadian Field has been very generous in supporting financially the calls of various unions, conferences and missions. Now we trust that this loyal support will bereciprocated.

For the past few years the brethren of this Field have been active in building a new church in the city of Toronto. This project wascompleted in the final months of 1992, but financially it still needsassistance.

Since we are a large Field with only a few members, we appealto our brethren all over the world for a special offering. Yourgenerous contribution will not be overlooked by the Giver of all goodgifts (James 1:17,2 Corinthians 9:7). Through your kind assistanceand the Lord's grace, the Toronto church will be ready for dedication to God's glory.

Lesson 1 Sabbath, July 3, 1993

A REFORMATION AMONG GOD'S PEOPLE

"We need a thorough reformation in all our churches. The converting powerof God must come into the church. Seek the Lord most earnestly, put awayyour sins, and tarry in Jerusalem till ye be endowed with power from onhigh." - Testimonies to Ministers, p. 443.

KEY TEXT: "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blottedout, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of theLord" (Acts 3:19).

THE SPIRITUAL CONDITION OF LAODICEAo Sunday

June 27

1. How does the True Witness describe the condition of Laodicea? Revelation3:15.

"It is not enough to merely profess to believe the truth. All the soldiers of thecross of Christ virtually obligate themselves to enter the crusade against the adversary of souls, to condemn wrong and sustain righteousness. But the message of theTrue Witness reveals the fact that a terrible deception is upon our people, whichmakes it necessary to come to them with warnings,. to break their spiritual slumber, and arouse them to decided action."- Testimonies. vol. 3, p. 254.

2. Why is it so difficult for those who feel secure in their attainments to receivethe Laodicean message? Revelation 3:17.

"The message of the True Witness finds the people of God in a sad deception, yet honest in that deception. They know not that their condition is deplorable in thesight of God. While those addressed are flattering themselves that they are in an exaltedspiritual condition, the message of the True Witness breaks their security by the startling denunciation of their true condition of spiritual blindness, poverty, and wretchedness."- Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 253.

"I have been shown that the greatest reason why the people of God are now foundin this state of spiritual blindness is that they will not receive correction."-Ibid.,p.255.

TWO POSSIBILITIES/TWO CLASSES OF BELIEVERSD Monday

June 28

3. What happens to those who are content to remain in the condition of Laodicea? Revelation 3:16.

"Christ cannot take up the names of those who are satisfied in their own selfsufficiency. He cannot importune in behalf of a people who feel no need of His help, who claim to know and possess everything."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. WhiteComments], vol. 7, p. 964.

"If the church pursue a course similar to that of the world, they will share thesame fate. Nay, rather, as they have received greater light, their punishment will begreater than that of the impenitent."- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 100.

4. What counsel does Christ give to those who want to be healed of the Laodicean condition? Revelation 3:18.

"The only hope for the Laodiceans is a clear view of their standing before God, aknowledge of the nature of their disease."-Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 87.

"I saw that this call to the Laodicean church will affect souls. A becoming zeal iscalled for by God on our part..We must repent, throwaway our whole feelings, feel ourdestitution, buy gold that we may be rich, eyesalve that we may see, white raiment thatwe may be clothed."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. Whte Comments], vol. 7, p. 966.

"The gold that Jesus would have us buy of Him is gold tried in the fire; it is thegold of faith and love, that has no defiling substance mingled with it. The white raiment is the righteousness of Christ, the wedding garment which Christ alone cangive. The eyesalve is the true spiritual discernment that is so wanting among us, forspiritual things must be spiritually discerned."-Ibid., p. 965.

REPENTANCE AND CONVERSIOND Tuesday

June 29

5. How do we understand the call for revival and reformation? Acts 3:19.

"A revival and a reformation must take place under the ministration of the HolySpirit. Revival and reformation are two different things. Revival signifies a renewal ofspiritual life, a quickening of the powers of mind and heart, a resurrection from thespiritual death. Reformation signifies a reorganization, a change in ideas and theories, habits and practices. Reformation will not bring forth the good fruit of righteousnessunless it is connected with the revival of the Spirit. Revival and reformation are to dotheir appointed work, and in doing this work they must blend."-Christian Service, p. 42.

6. What does genuine repentance imply? Revelation 3:19; Ezekiel 33:15, 16.

"N0 repentance is genuine that does not work reformation. The righteousness ofChrist is not a cloak to cover unconfessed and unforsaken sin; it is a principle of life thattransforms the character and controls the conduct. Holiness is wholeness for God; it is theentire surrender of heart and life to the indwelling of the principles of heaven.

"The Christian in his business life is to represent to the world the manner inwhich our Lord would conduct business enterprises. In every transaction he is tomake it manifest that God is his teacher. 'Holiness unto the Lord' is to be writtenupon daybooks and ledgers, on deeds, receipts, and bills of exchange."- The Desire ofAges, pp. 555, 556.

THE PILLARS OF OUR FAITHo Wednesday

June 30

7. How far does the Laodicean condition affect the pillars of the Advent faith?Psalm 11:3.

"A company was presented before me under the name of Seventh-day Adventists, who were advising that the banner or sign which makes us a distinctive peopleshould not be held out so strikingly; for they claimed it was not the best policy in securing success to our institutions."-Selected Messages, book 2, p. 385.

"After the truth has been proclaimed as a witness to all nations, every conceivable power of evil will be set in operation, and minds will be confused by manyvoices crying, 'Lo, here is Christ; 10, He is there. This is the truth, I have the messagefrom God, He has sent me with great light.' Then there will be a removing of the landmarks, and an attempt to tear down the pillars of our faith." - The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 985.

8. What is the consequence of the acceptance of false teachings by the Laodicean church? 1 Corinthians 11:19; Romans 16:17.

"God will arouse His people; if other means fail, heresies will come in among them, which will sift them, separating the chaff from the wheat."-Gospel Workers, p. 299.

"When the shaking comes, by the introduction of false theories, ... surfacereaders [upon whom the word of God has made little impression], anchored nowhere, are like shifting sand. They slide into any position to suit the tenor of their feelings ofbitterness."- Testimonies to Ministers, p. 112.

RESTORING THE OLD PATHSo Thursday

July 1

9. What does a faithful remnant do when the church is in apostasy? Jude 3(last part).

"I saw a company who stood well guarded and firm, giving no countenance tothose who would unsettle the established faith of the body."-Earry Writings, p. 258.

10. What is our work today in view of the apostasy in Laodicea? Jeremiah 6:16(last part); Isaiah 58: I, 12.

"Here [Isaiah 58:8-14] are given the characteristics of those who shall be reformers, who will bear the banner of the third angel's message, those who avow themselves God'scommandment-keeping people, and who honor God, and are earnestly engaged, in thesight of all the universe, in building up the old waste places. Who is it that calls them, Therepairers of the breach, The restorers of paths to dwell in? It is God. Their names are registered in heaven as reformers, restorers, as raising the foundations of many generations."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 4, p. 1151.

"I have been hoping that there would be a thorough reformation, and that theprinciples for which we fought in the early days, and which were brought out in thepower of the Holy Spirit, would be maintained."-Selected Messages, book 1, p. 206.

CONSECRATION

"The warfare against self is the greatest battle that was ever fought. Theyielding of self, surrendering all to the will of God, requires a struggle; butthe soul must submit to God before it can be renewed in holiness." -Steps toChrist, p. 43.

KEY TEXT: "So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that hehath, he cannot be my disciple" (Luke 14:33).

OUR ORIGINAL CONDITIONo Sunday

July 4

1. How does the Bible describe our original condition before our conversion?Isaiah 1:5,6; Ephesians 2:1; 2 Timothy 2:26.

2. How far is a man, without Christ, able to go in his effort to change his character? Jeremiah 13:23; John 15:5 (last part).

"There are those who profess to serve God, while they rely upon their own efforts to obey His law, to form a right character, and secure salvation. Their hearts arenot moved by any deep sense of the love of Christ, but they seek to perform the dutiesof the Christian life as that which God requires of them in order to gain heaven. Suchreligion is worth nothing."-Steps to Christ, p. 44.

ALL IDOLS MUST BE GIVEN UPo Monday

July 5

3. What must a person give up in order to become a disciple of Christ? Luke14:33.

"In giving ourselves to God, we must necessarily give up all that would separateus from Him.... Whatever shall draw away the heart from God must be given up.Mammon is the idol of many. The love of money, the desire for wealth, is the goldenchain that binds them to Satan. Reputation and worldly honor are worshiped byanother class. The life of selfish ease and freedom from responsibility is the idol ofothers. But these slavish bands must be broken. We cannot be half the Lord's andhalf the world's. We are not God's children unless we are such entirely."-Steps toChrist, p. 44.

4. How did Christ illustrate the need to cut off every darling indulgence? Matthew 5:29.

-8-

j

Page 9: Sabbath Bible Lessons · we all consider carefully how this sobering reality should be affecting our lives both individually and as a church. We are living in a solemn hour-onein

"There must be a revival of the strait testimony. The path to heaven is nosmoother now than in the days of our Saviour. All our sins must be put away. Everydarling indulgence that hinders our religious life must be cut off. The right eye or theright hand must be sacrificed if it cause us to offend. Are we willing to renounce ourown wisdom and to receive the kingdom of heaven as a little child? Are we willing topart with self-righteousness? Are we willing to give up our chosen worldly associates? Are we willing to sacrifice the approbation of men? The prize of eternal life is of infinite value. Will we put forth efforts and make sacrifices proportionate to the worthof the object to be attained?"- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 222.

THE CHOICE IS OURSo Tuesday

July 6

5. How do we make the surrender of ourselves to Christ? Deuteronomy 30:19;Joshua 24:15 (first part); Revelation 3:20.

"You desire to give yourself to Him, but you are weak in moral power, in slaveryto doubt, and controlled by the habits of your life of sin. Your promises and resolutions are like ropes of sand. You cannot control your thoughts, your impulses, your affections. The knowledge of your broken promises and forfeited pledges weakensyour confidence in your own sincerity, and causes you to feel that God cannot acceptyou; but you need not despair. What you need to understand is the true force of thewill. This is the governing power in the nature of man, the power of decision, or ofchoice. Everything depends on the right action of the will. The power of choice Godhas given to men; it is theirs to exercise. You cannot change your heart, you cannot ofyourself give to God its affections; but you can choose to serve Him. You can give Himyour will; He will then work in you to will and to do according to His good pleasure. Thus your whole nature will be brought under the control of the Spirit of Christ; youraffections will be centered upon Him, your thoughts will be in harmony with Him."Steps to Christ, p. 47. [Author's emphasis.]

6. What is the evidence that we have allowed Christ to take possession of ourhearts? 2 Corinthians 5:14.

"When Christ dwells in the heart, the soul will be so filled with His love, with thejoy of communion with Him, that it will cleave to Him; and in the contemplation ofHim, self will be forgotten. Love to Christ will be the spring of action. Those who feelthe constraining love of God, do not ask how little may be given to meet the requirements of God; they do not ask for the lowest standard, but aim at perfect conformity to the will of their Redeemer. With earnest desire they yield all and manifest aninterest proportionate to the value of the object which they seek. A profession ofChrist without this deep-love is mere talk, dry formality, and heavy drudgery."-Stepsto Christ, pp. 44, 45.

DANGER IN DELAYo Wednesday

July?

7. How dangerous is it to resist the impression made by the Holy Spirit or topostpone our decision to act according to our enlightened conscience? Hebrews 3:7, 8.

"Desires for goodness and holiness are right as far as they go; but if you stophere, they will avail nothing. Many will be lost while hoping and desiring to be Chris-

tians. They do not come to the point of yielding the will to God. They do not nowchoose to be Christians."-Steps to Christ, pp. 47, 48. [Author's emphasis.]

8. In connection with what duty are we in danger of grieving the Holy Spiritthrough our neglect or delay? 2 Timothy 4:2-5.

"Let your hearts be drawn out in love for perishing souls. Obey the impulsegiven by High Heaven. Grieve not the Holy Spirit by delay. Resist not God's methodsof recovering souls from the thralldom of sin. To every man, according to his severalability, is given his work. Do your best, and God will accept your efforts."-Testimonies,vol. 8, p. 56.

SALVATION: A JOINT OPERATIOND Thursday

JulyS

9. What lesson of Christ shows that man must strive if he wants to be saved?Luke 13:23, 24. What will happen to those who do not know what it meansto struggle against the powers of darkness? Luke 13:25-27.

"Man is allotted a part in this great struggle for everlasting life; he must respondto the working of the Holy Spirit. It will require a struggle to break through thepowers of darkness, and the Spirit works in him to accomplish this. But man is nopassive being, to be saved in indolence. He is called upon to strain every muscle andexercise every faculty in the struggle for immortality; yet it is God that supplies theefficiency. No human being can be saved in indolence."-Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 65.

10. How does Paul show that salvation is a joint operation? Philippians 2:12, 13.

"The work of gaining salvation is one of copartnership, a joint operation. There is tobe cooperation between God and the repentant sinner." - The Acts of the Apostles, p. 482.

"Will man take hold of divine power, and with determination and perseveranceresist Satan, as Christ has given him example in His conflict with the foe in thewilderness of temptation? God cannot save man against his will from the power ofSatan's artifices. Man must work with his human power, aided by the divine power ofChrist, to resist and to conquer at any cost to himself. In short, man must overcome asChrist overcame. And then, through the victory that it is his privilege to gain by theall-powerful name of Jesus, he may become an heir of God and joint heir with JesusChrist. This could not be the case if Christ alone did all the overcoming. Man must dohis part; he must be victor on his own account, through the strength and grace thatChrist gives him. Man must be a coworker with Christ in the labor of overcoming, andthen he will be partaker with Christ of His glory." - Testimonies, vol. 4, pp. 32, 33.[Author's emphasis.]

OBEDIENCE

Sabbath, July 17, 1993

"What God promises He is able at any time to perform, and the work whichHe gives His people to do He is able to accomplish by them. If they will liveaccording to every word He has spoken, every good word and promise willbe fulfilled unto them." - Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 148.

KEY TEXT: "Not everyone that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into thekingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is inheaven" (Matthew 7:21).

THE WORK OF CHRISTIN BEHALF OF SINNERS

D SundayJuly 11

1. What work does Christ want to do in behalf of sinners in order to free themfrom the dominion of Satan? 1 John 3:8; Matthew 1:21; Hebrews 2:14,15.

"Jesus died, not to save man in his sins, but/rom his sins. Man is to leave the error of his ways, to follow the example of Christ, to take up his cross and follow Him,denying self, and obeying God at any cost."-Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 251. [Author's italics.]

2. What does Christ say to those who want to be saved? John 5:14 (last part);8:11 (last part).

"All who are not decided followers of Christ are servants of Satan. In the unregenerate heart there is love of sin and a disposition to cherish and excuse it. In therenewed heart there is hatred of sin and determined resistance against it."- The GreatControversy, p. 508.

July 12

3. What is sin, and whereby can it be identified? 1 John 3:4; Romans 3:20 (lastpart); 7:7.

loss. I will not here dwell upon the shortness and uncertainty of life; but there is a terrible danger-a danger not sufficiently understood-in delaying to yield to the pleading voice of God's Holy Spirit, in choosing to live in sin; for such this delay really is.Sin, however small it may be esteemed, can be indulged in only at the peril of infiniteloss. What we do not overcome, will overcome us and work out our destruction."Steps to Christ, pp. 32, 33.

NO ACCEPTANCE FOR TRANSGRESSORSD Tuesday

July 13

5. As far as the law is concerned, what condition is decisive before God? Luke10:25-28; 1 Corinthians 7:19; Romans 2:13.

"Christ does not lessen the claims of the law. In unmistakable language He presents obedience to it as the condition of etemallife-the same condition that was requiredof Adam before his fall. The Lord expects no less of the soul now than He expected ofman in Paradise, perfect obedience, unblemished righteousness. The requirement underthe covenant of grace is just as broad as the requirement made in Eden-harmonywith God's law, which is holy, just, and good."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 391.

6. What evidence shows that unrepentant and unregenerate transgressors willbe disqualified for the kingdom of heaven? Matthew 5:19, 20; 7:19-23; Romans 8:7, 8.

"Sinners will never enter the abode of bliss. The commandment breaker, and allwho unite with him in teaching that it makes no difference whether men break or observe the divine law, will by the universe of heaven be called least among the humanagencies. For nQt only have they been disloyal themselves, but they have taughtothers to break the law of God. Christ pronounces judgment upon those who claim tohave a knowledge of the law, but who, by precept and example, lead souls into confusion and darkness."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 5, p. 1085.

AN OBEDIENT PEOPLED Wednesday

July 14

7. What identifying mark will always be seen with the true people of God? Exodus 19:5; Jeremiah 11:1-5.

"John declared to the Jews that their standing before God was to be decided bytheir character and life. Profession was worthless. If their life and character were notin harmony with God's law, they were not His people."-The Desire of Ages, p. 107.

8. Today, how can the true people of God be distinguished from the professedChristian world? 1 John 2:3-6; Isaiah 8:20.

"Teachers of falsehood will arise to draw you away from the narrow path and thestrait gate."- Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 145.

"Let none cherish the idea that specialprovidences or miraculous manifestationsare to be the proof of the genuineness of their work or of the ideas they advocate. When persons will speak lightly of the word of God, and set their impressions, feelings, and exercises above the divine standard, we may know that they have no light inthem."-Ibid., p. 146.

EARMARKS OF GOD'S LAST REMNANTD Thursday

July 15

9. What is the description of the remnant people of God who will be victoriousin the last great conflict? Revelation 12:17; 14:12.

"There are only two parties upon this earth-those who stand under the bloodstained banner of Jesus Christ and those who stand under the black banner of rebellion. In the twelfth chapter of Revelation is represented the great conflict between theobedient and the disobedient."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol.7, p. 974.

10. What victories will be implied in the obedience of God's faithful children?Revelation 15:2.

"If we are true servants of God, there should be no question in our minds as towhether we will obey His commandments or consult our own temporal interests. Ifthe believers in the truth are not sustained by their faith in these comparativelypeaceful days, what will uphold them when the grand test comes and the decree goesforth against all those who will not worship the image of the beast and receive hismark in their foreheads or in their hands? This solemn period is not far off."-Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 251.

THOUGHT AND REVIEW QUESTIONSo Friday

"It is now that we are to learn this lesson [as Jacob did] of prevailing prayer, ofunyielding faith. "The Saviour longs to give us a greater blessing than we ask; and He delays theanswer to our request that He may show us the evil of our own hearts, and our deepneed of His grace. He desires us to renounce the selfishness that leads us to seekHim. Confessing our helplessness and bitter need, we are to trust ourselves wholly toHis love."-The Desire of Ages, p. 200.

8. What lesson should we learn from Christ's prayer in Luke 22:42?

"When we do not receive the very things we asked for, at the time we ask, weare still to believe that the Lord hears and that He will answer our prayers. When our prayersseem not to be answered, we are to cling to the promise; for the time of answering willsurely come, and we shall receive the blessing we need most."-Steps to Christ, p. 96.

HELPING THE ERRING ONESo Sunday

July 25

"Do not suffer sin upon your brother; but do not expose him, and thus increasethe difficulty, making the reproof seem like a revenge. Correct him in the way outlined in the word of God.

"Do not suffer resentment to ripen into malice. Do not allow the wound to festerand break out in poisoned words, which taint the minds of those who hear. Do notallow bitter thoughts to continue to fill your mind and his. Go to your brother, and inhumility and sincerity talk with him about the matter.

"Whatever the character of the offense, this does not change the plan that Godhas made for the settlement of misunderstandings and personal injuries. Speaking aloneand in the spirit of Christ to the one who is in fault will often remove the difficulty. Go tothe erring one, with a heart filled with Christ's love and sympathy, and seek to adjustthe matter. Reason with him calmly and quietly."-Testimonies, vol. 7, pp. 260, 261.

Page 18: Sabbath Bible Lessons · we all consider carefully how this sobering reality should be affecting our lives both individually and as a church. We are living in a solemn hour-onein

"Men have no right to surmise evil in regard to their fellowmen. Church members have no right to follow their own impulses and inclinations in dealing with fellowmembers who have erred. They should not even express their prejudices regardingthe erring, for thus they place in other minds the leaven of evil. Reports unfavorableto a brother or sister in the church are communicated from one to another of thechurch members. Mistakes are made and injustice is done because of an unwillingness on the part of some one to follow the directions given by the Lord Jesus."- Testimonies, vol. 7, p. 260.

4. What may happen as a result of hasty and premature conclusions in dealingwith supposed or real error? Proverbs 25:8, 9.

7. What rule should we bear in mind when we see that a brother or sister needsadvice? James 3:2; Proverbs 15:1.

"Confess your sins to God, who only can forgive them, and your faults to oneanother. If you have given offense to your friend or neighbor you are to acknowledgeyour wrong, and it is his duty freely to forgive you. Then you are to seek the forgiveness of God because the brother whom you wounded is the property of God, and in injuring him you sinned against his Creator and Redeemer. The case is not brought before the priest at all, but before the only true mediator, our great High Priest, who'was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin,' and who is 'touched withthe feeling of our infirmities' and is able to cleanse from every stain of iniquity." - Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 639.

"True confession is always of a specific character, and acknowledges particularsins. They may be of such a nature as only to be brought before God, they may bewrongs that should be confessed before individuals who have suffered injury throughthem, or they may be of a general kind that should be made known in the congregation of the people. 10. What promise belongs to those who confess their sins? Proverbs 28:13; 1John 1:9.

A NECESSARY DISTINCTIOND Sunday

August 1

1. How can deception be veiled within a statement of facts or intentions? Giveexamples: 1 Samuel 15:13-15; 28:1, 2; John 12:4-6.

"Even facts may be so stated as to convey a false impression."- Testimonies. vol.5, p. 58.

"An intention to deceive is what constitutes falsehood. Bya glance of the eye, amotion of the hand, an expression of the countenance, a falsehood may be told as effectually as by words. All intentional overstatement, every hint or insinuation calculated to convey an erroneous or exaggerated impression, even the statement of factsin such a manner as to mislead, is falsehood."-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 309.

2. How does Solomon show the distinction between a fool and a wise man? Ecclesiastes 5:3 (last part); Proverbs 10: 18, 19; 17:28.

AN EVIDENT CONTRAST

3. How does James describe a perfect man? James 3:2.

o MondayAugust 2

"Through the help that Christ can give, we shall be able to learn to bridle thetongue. Sorely as He was tried on the point of hasty and angry speech, He never oncesinned with His lips. With patient calmness He met the sneers, the taunts, and the ridicule of His fellow workers at the carpenter's bench. Instead of retorting angrily, He wouldbegin to sing one of David's beautiful psalms; and His companions, before realizing whatthey were doing, would unite with Him in the hymn. What a transformation would bewrought in this world if men and women today would follow Christ's example in theuse of words."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 936.

4. What description is given about an unruly tongue? James 3:5,6,8.

"Many indulge freely in criticism and accusing. By giving expression to suspicion, jealousy, and discontent, they yield themselves as instruments to Satan. Beforethey realize what they are doing, the adversary has through them accomplished hispurpose. The impression of evil has been made, the shadow has been cast, the arrowsof Satan have found their mark. Distrust, unbelief, and downright infidelity havefastened upon those who otherwise might have accepted Christ. Meanwhile the workers for Satan look complacently upon those whom they have driven to skepticism, andwho are now hardened against reproof and entreaty. They flatter themselves that incomparison with these souls they are virtuous and righteous. They do not realize thatthese sad wrecks of character are the work of their own unbridled tongues andrebellious hearts."-Christ's Object Lessons, pp. 340, 341.

THE POWER OF THE TONGUE

5. What is in the power of the tongue? Proverbs 18:21.

o TuesdayAugust 3

"In seeking to correct or reform others we should be careful of our words. Theywill be a savor of life unto life or of death unto death. In giving reproof or counsel, many indulge in sharp, severe speech, words not adapted to heal the wounded soul.By these ill-advised expressions the spirit is chafed, and often the erring ones are stirredto rebellion. All who would advocate the principles of truth need to receive theheavenly oil of love. Under all circumstances reproof should be spoken in love. Thenour words will reform but not exasperate. Christ by His Holy Spirit will supply theforce and the power."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 337.

6. What warning against evilspeaking should be given serious consideration?Psalm 101:5.

"What a world of gossip would be prevented if every man would remember thatthose who tell him the faults of others will as freely publish his faults at a favorableopportunity. We should endeavor to think well of all men, especially our brethren, until compelled to think otherwise. We should not hastily credit evil reports. These areoften the result of envy or misunderstanding, or they may proceed from exaggerationor a partial disclosure of facts." - Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 58.

"Evilspeaking is a twofold curse, falling more heavily upon the speaker thanupon the hearer. He who scatters the seeds of dissension and strife reaps in his ownsoul the deadly fruits. The very act of looking for evil in others develops evil in thosewho look."-The Ministry of Healing, p. 492.

Yet it is not a light or an easy thing to speak the exacttruth. right understanding of matters with which we have to do! We cannot speak the truthunless our minds are continually guided by Him who is truth."-Thoughts From theMount of Blessing, p. 68.

8. What admonition does Christ give us in this respect? Matthew 5:37; 12:36,37.

"These words [Matthew 5:37] condemn all those meaningless phrases and expletives that border on profanity. They condemn the deceptive compliments, the evasion of truth, the flattering phrases, the exaggerations, the misrepresentations intrade, that are current in society and in the business world. They teach that no onewho tries to appear what he is not, or whose words do not convey the real sentimentof his heart, can be called truthful.

"If these words of Christ were heeded, they would check the utterance of evilsurmising and unkind criticism; for in commenting upon the actions and motives ofanother, who can be certain of speaking the exact truth? How often pride, passion, personal resentment, color the impression given! A glance, a word, even an intonationof the voice, may be vital with falsehood." - Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 68.

VICTORY OVER THE SINS OF THE TONGUED Thursday

AugustS

9. How did king David control his tongue? Psalm 39:1-3. What advice is givento those who are striving for the immortal inheritance?

"If you are striving for the immortal inheritance with an earnestness, energy, and zeal proportionate to its value, then can you be a fair candidate for everlastinglife, and heir of glory. You need a fresh conversion every day. Die daily to self, keepyour tongue as with a bridle, control your words, cease your murmurings and complaints, let not one word of censure escape your lips. If this requires a great effort, make it; you will be repaid in so doing."-Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 699.

10. How is victory over the sins of the tongue possible? Philippians 4:13; Luke6:45 (first part).

"If the heart is right, your words, your dress, your acts, will all be right. Truegodliness is lacking. I would not dishonor my Master so much as to admit that a careless, trifling, prayerless person is a Christian. No; a Christian has victory over his besetments, over his passions. 7. What counsel is given to those who would run the Christian race successfully?Hebrews 12:1,2.

"In the epistle to the Hebrews is pointed out the single hearted purpose thatshould characterize the Christian's race for eternal life.... Envy, malice, evil thinking, evilspeaking, covetousness-these are weights that the Christian must lay asideif he would run successfully the race for immortality. FAITH: DEFINITION AND SOURCE

1. What is the definition of faith? Hebrews 11:1.

D SundayAugust 15

"Faith is not the ground of our salvation, but it is the great blessing-the eye thatsees, the ear that hears, the feet that run, the hand that grasps. It is the means, not theend. If Christ gave His life to save sinners, why shall I not take that blessing? My faithgrasps it, and thus my faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence ofthings unseen. Thus resting and believing, I have peace with God through the LordJesus Christ."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 6, p. 1073.

"The work of conquering evil is to be done through faith. Those who go into thebattlefield will find that they must put on the whole armor of God. The shield of faithwill be their defense and will enable them to be more than conquerors. Nothing elsewill avail but this-faith in the Lord of hosts, and obedience to His orders."-Counselsto Parents, Teachers, and Students, pp. 182, 183.

4. What is the first and the ultimate purpose of faith? Romans 5: 1; Ephesians2:8; 1 Peter 1:9.

The repentant soul realizes that his justification comes because Christ, as his substitute and surety, has died for him, is his atonement and righteousness."-SelectedMessages, book 1, p. 367.

TRUE FAITH IN CONTRAST TO FALSE FAITH

5. How can false faith be identified? James 2:14, 17,20.

D TuesdayAugust 17

"Presumption is Satan's counterfeit of faith. Faith claims God's promises, andbrings forth fruit in obedience. Presumption also claims the promises, but uses themas Satan did, to excuse transgression. Faith would have led our first parents to trustthe love of God, and to obey His commands. Presumption led them to transgress Hislaw, believing that His great love would save them from the consequence of their sin.It is not faith that claims the favor of Heaven without complying with the conditionson which mercy is to be granted."- The Desire of Ages, p. 126.

6. By what is true faith characterized? Galatians 5:6; James 2:18, 22. What isclosely associated with true faith? Romans 5:2, 5; 1 Timothy 1:19; 3:9.

In place of theworld, He will give you, for a life of obedience, the kingdom under the whole heavens. He will give you an eternal weight of glory and a life that is as enduring as eternity."Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 44.

8. What other relationship is also established? Matthew 3:9; Galatians 3:7.

"As [God] had called Abraham out from a heathen people, so He could callothers to His service. Their hearts might now appear as lifeless as the stones of thedesert, but His Spirit could quicken them to do His will, and receive the fulfillment ofHis promise."-The Desire of Ages, p. 107.

10. For what are we admonished to contend, especially in the soon-coming crisis? Jude 3 (last part).

"Satan will work with all his deceptive power to influence the heart and becloudthe understanding, to make evil appear good, and good evil. The stronger and purerthe faith of God's people, and the firmer their determination to obey Him, the morefiercely will Satan strive to stir up against them the rage of those who, while claimingto be righteous, trample upon the law of God. It will require the firmest trust, themost heroic purpose, to hold fast the faith once delivered to the saints.

"God desires His people to prepare for the soon-coming crisis. Prepared or unprepared, they must all meet it; and those only who have brought their lives into conformity to the divine standard, will stand firm at that time of test and trial. Whensecular rulers unite with ministers of religion to dictate in matters of conscience, thenit will be seen who really fear and serve God."- The Acts of the Apostles, pp. 431, 432.

"Men in ignorance and moral darkness must have light, spiritual light; for theworld knew not God, and He must be revealed to their understanding. Truth lookeddown from heaven and saw not the reflection of her image; for dense clouds of moraldarkness and gloom enveloped the world, and the Lord Jesus alone was able to rollback the clouds; for He was the Light of the world." -Fundamentals of Christian Education, pp. 176, 177.

"Light becomes darkness to all those who will not walk in it."-Ibid., p. 65."Many have for years made no advancement in knowledge and true holiness.

CHRISTIANITY IN THE HOME

"Our homes must be made a Bethel, our hearts a shrine. Wherever the loveof God is cherished in the soul, there will be peace, there will be light andjoy." - The Adventist Home, p. 19.

KEY TEXT: "Where is the flock that was given thee, thy beautiful flock?" (Jeremiah 13:20, last part).

AN IDEAL CHRISTIAN HOME

1. How did the psalmist describe a blessed home? Psalm 128:1-6.

o SundayAugust 29

"Home should be made all that the word implies. It should be a little heavenupon earth, a place where the affections are cultivated instead of being studiously repressed. Our happiness depends upon this cultivation of love, sympathy, and truecourtesy to one another."- The Adventist Home, p. 15.

2. What spirit should control the members of a Christian family? 1 Peter 3:8;Philippians 2:3-5; Romans 12:10.

"Every Christian home should have rules; and parents should, in their words anddeportment toward each other, give to the children a precious, living example of whatthey desire them to be. Purity in speech and true Christian courtesy should be constantly practiced. Teach the children and youth to respect themselves, to be true toGod, true to principle; teach them to respect and obey the law of God. These principles will control their lives and will be carried out in their associations with others. They will create a pure atmosphere-one that will have an influence that will encourage weak souls in the upward path that leads to holiness and heaven."- TheAdventist Home, p. 16.

COUNSELS TO HUSBAND AND WIFED Monday

3. How should a Christian husband treat his wife? Ephesians 5:25, 28; 1 Peter3:7.

are you to show a tyrannical spirit in the home. The man who does this is working inpartnership with satanic agencies. Bring your will into submission to the will of God.Do all in your power to make the life of your wife pleasant and happy. Take the wordof God as the man of your counsel. In the home live out the teachings of the word. Then you will live them out in the church and will take them with you to your place ofbusiness. The principles of heaven will ennoble all your transactions."- The AdventistHome, pp. 213, 214.

4. What attitude should a Christian wife take toward her husband? Colossians3:18; 1 Peter 3:1, 2, 5, 6.

"Instead of sinking into a mere household drudge, let the wife and mother taketime to read, to keep herself well informed, to be a companion to her husband, and tokeep in touch with the developing minds of her children. Let her use wisely the opportunities now hers to influence her dear ones for the higher life. Let her take time tomake the dear Saviour a daily Companion and familiar Friend. Let her take time forthe study of His word, take time to go with the children into the fields and learn ofGod through the beauty of His works.

"Let her keep cheerful and buoyant. Instead of spending every moment in endless sewing, make the evening a pleasant social season, a family reunion after theday's duties. Many a man would thus be led to choose the society of his home beforethat of the clubhouse or the saloon."- The Ministry of Healing, p. 294.

THE CHILD'S FIRST SCHOOLD Tuesday

August 31

5. What is written about the importance of the home school? Deuteronomy 6:7-9.

"In His wisdom the Lord has decreed that the family shall be the greatest of alleducational agencies. It is in the home that the education of the child is to begin. Hereis his first school. Here, with his parents as instructors, he is to learn the lessons thatare to guide him throughout life-lessons of respect, obedience, reverence, selfcontrol. The educational influences of the home are a decided power for good or forevil. They are in many respects silent and gradual, but if exerted on the right side, they become a far-reaching power for truth and righteousness. If the child is not instructed aright here, Satan will educate him through agencies of his choosing. How important, then, is the school in the home!"-Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, p. 107.

6. What example shows that home schooling was a sacred practice among theJews? 2 Timothy 1:5; 3:14, 15. How important is this system in our days?

"In the home school-the first grade-the very best talent should be utilized.Upon all parents there rests the obligation of giving physical, mental, and spiritual instruction. It should be the object of every parent to secure to his child a well-balanced,symmetrical character. This is a work of no small magnitude and importance-a workrequiring earnest thought and prayer no less than patient, persevering effort. A rightfoundation must be laid, a framework, strong and firm, erected, and then day by daythe work of building, polishing, perfecting, must go forward."-Counsels to Parents,Teachers, and Students, pp. 107, 108.

THE HERITAGE OF THE LORDo Wednesday

September 1

7. How should parents train their children? Proverbs 22:6; Ephesians 6:4. Whatis one of the educational lines to which parents should pay much attention?

"The great work of parents and teachers is character building-seeking torestore the image of Christ in those placed under their care."-Counsels to Parents,Teachers, and Students, p. 61.

"Parents, be careful what example and what ideas you give your children. Theirminds are plastic, and impressions are easily made. In regard to the service of thesanctuary, if the speaker has a blemish, be afraid to mention it. Talk only of the goodwork he is doing, of the good ideas he presented, which you should heed as comingthrough God's agent. It may be readily seen why children are so little impressed withthe ministry of the word and why they have so little reverence for the house of God.Their education has been defective in this respect. Their parents need daily communion with God. Their own ideas need to be refined and ennobled; their lips need to betouched with a live coal from off the altar; then their habits, their practices at home, will make a good impression on the minds and characters of their children. The standard of religion will be greatly elevated. Such parents will do a great work for God.They will have less earthliness, less sensuality, and more refinement and fidelity athome. Life will be invested with a solemnity of which they have scarcely conceived.Nothing will be made common that pertains to the service and worship of God."Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 498.

8. In the training of their children, what object should parents have in view?Psalm 144:12; Isaiah 8:18.

"Children are the heritage of the Lord, and the plan of redemption includes theirsalvation as well as ours. They have been entrusted to parents in order that theymight be brought up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, that they might bequalified to do their work in time and eternity."-The Adventist Home, p. 280.

"If you would meet God in peace, feed His flock now with spiritual food; forevery child has the possibility of attaining unto eternal life. Children and youth areGod's peculiar treasure."-Ibid.

HOME INFLUENCE: POSITIVE OR NEGATIVEo ThursdaySeptember 2

9. What influence will properly trained Christian youth have upon others? 1Timothy 4:12; Titus 2:7,8. What responsibility rests upon them?

"Christians should wake up and act. Their influence is telling upon, and molding, the opinions and habits of others. They will have to bear the weighty responsibility ofdeciding by their influence the destiny of souls."-Testimonies, vol. 3, pp. 51, 52.

"Those who have really tasted the sweets of redeeming love will not, cannot, rest until all with whom they associate are made acquainted with the plan of salvation. The young should inquire: ' "Lord, what wilt Thou have me to do?" How can I honorand glorify Thy name upon the earth?' Souls are perishing all around us, and yet whatburden do the youth bear to win souls to Christ?"-Ibid., vol. 1, pp. 511, 512.

10. For what will professed Christians and their grown-up children be accountable? Jeremiah 13:20 (last part).

"Men and women, children and youth, are measured in the scales of heaven inaccordance with that which they reveal in their home life." - The SDA Bible Commentary[E.G. White Comments], vol. 5, p. 1085.

"Those who might have exerted an influence to save souls had they stood in thecounsel of God, yet failed to do their duty through selfishness, indolence, or becausethey were ashamed of the cross of Christ, will not only lose their own souls, but willhave the blood of poor sinners upon their garments. Such will be required to renderan account for the good that they could have done had they been consecrated to God,but did not do because of their unfaithfulness."-Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 511.

Without Christ at ourside to bear the heaviest part of the load, we must indeed say that it is heavy. But yokedwith Him to the car of duty, the burdens of life may all be lightly carried. He loved. The very principle that actuated Christ will actuate them in all their dealingone with another.

"This love is the evidence of their discipleship. 'By this shall all men know thatye are My disciples,' said Jesus, 'if ye have love one to another.' When men are boundtogether, not by force or self-interest, but by love, they show the working of an influence that is above every human influence. Where this oneness exists, it is evidencethat the image of God is being restored in humanity, that a new principle of life hasbeen implanted. It shows that there is power in the divine nature to withstand thesupernatural agencies of evil, and that the grace of God subdues the selfishness inherent in the natural heart."- The Desire of Ages, p. 678.

Lesson 13 Sabbath, September 25, 1993

HOLINESS

"Holiness is wholeness to God. The soul is surrendered to God. The will, andeven the thoughts, are brought into subjection to the will of Christ. The loveof Jesus fills the soul, and is constantly going out in a clear, refreshingstream, to make glad the hearts of others." - The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G.White Comments), vol. 6, p. 1076.

KEY TEXT: "Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shallsee the Lord" (Hebrews 12:14).

GOD'S STANDARD FOR HIS PEOPLEo Sunday

September 19

1. What is God's standard for His people? 1 Thessalonians 4:3, 7.

"Those who experience the sanctification of the Bible will manifest a spirit ofhumility. Like Moses, they have had a view of the awful majesty of holiness, and theysee their own unworthiness in contrast with the purity and exalted perfection of theInfinite One."-The Great Controversy, p. 470.

"There can be no self-exaltation, no boastful claim to freedom from sin, on thepart of those who walk in the shadow of Calvary's cross. They feel that it was their sinwhich caused the agony that broke the heart of the Son of God, and this thought willlead them to self-abasement. Those who live nearest to Jesus discern most clearly thefrailty and sinfulness of humanity, and their only hope is in the merit of a crucifiedand risen Saviour."-Ibid., p. 471.

2. For what purpose has God set up this standard for His church? Hebrews12:10; Ephesians 5:26, 27; 1 Corinthians 1:7,8.

PARTAKERS OF GOD'S HOLINESSo Monday

September 20

q. How can we become partakers of God's holiness? llebrews 12:12-15; Titus2:1~-14. Of what mistaken ideas of sanctification should we beware?

"The sanctification now gaining prominence in the religious world carries with ita spirit of self-exaltation and a disregard for the law of God that mark it as foreign tothe religion of the Bible. Its advocates teach that sanctification is an instantaneouswork, by which, through faith alone, they attain to perfect holiness. 'Only believe,'say they, 'and the blessing is yours.' No further effort on the part of the receiver is supposed to be required. At the same time they deny the authority of the law of God, urgingthat they are released from obligation to keep the commandments."-The Great Controversy, p. 471.

-42 -

Page 43: Sabbath Bible Lessons · we all consider carefully how this sobering reality should be affecting our lives both individually and as a church. We are living in a solemn hour-onein

"Let none deceive themselves with the belief that they can become holy whilewillfully violating one of God's requirements."-Ibid., p. 472.

4. How do we know that this is not an instantaneous experience but a progressive work? 2 Corinthians 7:1.

"The Scriptures plainly show that the work of sanctification is progressive. When in conversion the sinner finds peace with God through the blood of the atonement, the Christian life has but just begun. Now he is to 'go on unto perfection;' togrow up 'unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.' "-The Great Controversy, p. 470.

THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN USo Tuesday

September 21

5. Through whom are we able to reach God's standard and live holy lives?Philippians 4:19; Romans 8:37; 1 Corinthians 15:57; Jude 24.

"There must be a power working from within, a new life from above, before mencan be changed from sin to holin~ss. That power is Christ."-Steps to Christ, p. 18.

"We can overcome. Yes; fully, entirely. Jesus died to make a way of escape forus, that we might: overcome every evil temper, every sin, every temptation, and sitdown at last with Him."-Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 144.

"To every one who surrenders fully to God is given the privilege of living withoutsin, in obedience to the law of heaven."-The Review and Herald, September 27,1906.

6. In what way can we be overcomers in Christ? 1 John 3:3; 1 Peter 1:22; 1Corinthians 6:11.

"[Christ] came to destroy the works of the devil, and He has made provision thatthe Holy Spirit shall'be imparted to every repentant soul, to keep him from sinning."The Desire of Ages, p. 311.

"It is the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, which Jesus said He would send into theworld, that changes our character into the image of Christ; and when this is accomplished, we reflect as in a mirror the glory of the Lord. That is, the character of theone who thus beholds Christ is so like His that one looking at him sees Christ's owncharacter shining out as from a mirror. Imperceptibly to ourselves, we are changedday by day from our ways and will into the ways and will of Christ, into the lovelinessof His character. Thus we grow up into Christ, and unconsciously reflect His image."- The Review and Herald, December 5, 1912.

MIND AND BODYo Wednesday

September 22

7. What scriptural evidence shows that, in the work of sanctification, there isan interaction between the mind (which is the spiritual heart) and the body?Romans 12:1,2.

"Christians are bidden to present their bodies, 'a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God.' In order to do this, all their powers must be preserved in the best possible condition. Every practice that weakens physical or mental strength unfits manfor the service of his Creator. And will God be pleased with anything less than thebest we can offer? Said Christ: 'Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart.'

HOLY HEARTS

Those who do love God with all the heart will desire to give Him the best service oftheir life, and they will be constantly seeking to bring every power of their being intoharmony with the laws that will promote their ability to do His will. They will not,by the indulgence of appetite or passion, enfeeble or defile the offering which theypresent to their heavenly Father."-The Great Controversy, pp. 473, 474.

8. What loss will those suffer who defile their bodies? 1 Corinthians 3:16, 17;6:19. How will God use those who do not defile themselves?

"The Lord has given His holy commandments to be a wall of protection aroundHis created beings, and those who will keep themselves from the defilement of appetiteand passion may become partakers of the divine nature. Their perceptions will be clear. They will know how to preserve every faculty in health, so that it may be presented toGod in service."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 1, p. 1105.

D ThursdaySeptember 23

9. What preparation is required today in view of the soon coming of Christ? 1Thessalonians 3:12, 13; 1 John 3:2.

"Not even by a thought did (Jesus] yield to temptation. So it may be with us.Christ's humanity was united with divinity; He was fitted for the conflict by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. And He came to make us partakers of the divine nature. So long as we are united to Him by faith, sin has no more dominion over us. Godreaches for the hand of faith in us to direct it to lay fast hold upon the divinity of

.Christ, that we may attain to perfection of character."- The Desire of Ages, p. 123.

10. When Christ comes, in what state of preparation will He find the livingsaints? 1 Thessalonians 5:23.

"The true Christian obtains an experience which brings holiness. He is without aspot of guilt upon the conscience, or a taint of corruption upon the soul. The spirituality of the law of God, with its limiting principles, is brought into his life. The light oftruth irradiates his understanding. A glow of perfect love for the Redeemer clearsaway the miasma which has interposed between his soul and God. The will of God hasbecome his will, pure, elevated, refined, and sanctified. His countenance reveals thelight of heaven. His body is a fit temple for the Holy Spirit. Holiness adorns hischaracter. God can commune with him; for soul and body are in harmony with God."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 909.
