September 8, 2019 Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
A Message from the Pastor
Dear parishioners, It’s usually a joy for me to write this pastor’s column, but this one is difficult. As you can read in the bulletin insert letter from Cardinal Archbishop Joseph Tobin, he has asked me to take on a new assignment for the Archdiocese, which means I will be leaving as pastor here at Guardian Angel Church. This all came about quite unexpectedly over the past couple of weeks. Cardinal Tobin called me to ask me to take on the role of “Vicar for Clergy.” In an upcoming bulletin I’ll explain more about what this new role means, but it is a full-time position and so I will no longer be in parish ministry. I will also being moving into residence at a different rectory, so I will no longer be living here either. My office will be at the Archdiocesan Center, across the street from the Cathedral in Newark. Honestly, I think I’m still a little bit in shock over this. I have always been a priest that serves in parish ministry, and that is where my heart is, and that is a big part of what attracted me to the priest-hood. In my conversation with Cardinal Tobin, he told me that that was one aspect of why he discerned that I was the priest he wants in this positon. I’m going to trust that the Holy Spirit is guiding this, and that God grants us the grace for more than what we see in ourselves. I do not know the complete timetable of transi-tion. Nor do I know who will come to shepherd the parish after me. I do believe that as the new Vicar for Clergy, I will be involved with the process of recommending to the Cardinal the next priest who comes here, so there is some consolation for me there. My official start date in Newark is October 1. I will keep the parish updated about the details of transition. I am going to deeply miss you, the people of Guardian Angel Church. It has been my privilege to serve as pastor here for 16 years. May the Lord continue to watch over us and bless us all!
* This month we welcome our new team to lead Religious Education: Frances Ferraro as our Parish Catechetical Leader, and Ali Zambrotta as our Secretary for Religious Education. They are both excited and energized and have already begun. We look forward to introducing Frances to you at our Masses next weekend, and giving her the opportuni-ty to invite our support of this vital ministry.

AMERICAN RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE
Thank you for hosting such an amazing drive on August 28th! We were able to collect 22 pints of lifesaving blood on a goal of 21 pints. That’s approximately 66 lives saved – which means so much during this critical time period in the summer. We also had 14 first time donors! We are current-ly in an urgent need for blood and your drive has made a huge impact on patients’ lives. Thank you to the Guardian Angel Church community for making this event so successful!

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION UPDATE!
AS OUR THOUGHTS shift from sandy toes and picnics and turn toward backpacks and school lunches, we give thanks to our Lord for the change of the seasons and its bounty of colors. Autumn has always been a favorite season of mine; it’s a season of vulnerability as we watch in awe of how the leaves change color and float effort-lessly to the ground as they submit to God’s will. I am also reminded that we too are vulnerable to changes; particularly the inner seasons of our lives. With the help of the Holy Spirit we can also surrender to God’s will and experience spiritual growth. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION VOLUNTEERS NEEDED. Adult and teen volunteers are needed for our Religious Education program which begins Tuesday, Oct 1 and meets one day per week (Tuesday). As a volunteer, you will be provided with materials, one-on-one lesson prepa-ration assistance and of course, spiritual support. Please consider making a gift of your time and talent to our Religious Education Ministry. Remember, God doesn’t call the qualified, he qualifies the called! If you have any questions please contact Frances Ferraro at (201) 327-0352 or email at [email protected].
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

WEEKLY STEWARSHIP REFLECTION
Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time September 8, 2019
“Everyone of you who does not renounce all his posses-sions cannot be my disciple.” (Luke 14:33)
When we first hear this statement, it seems that Jesus is making an unrealistic demand upon us. How can we re-nounce all of our possessions? We need them to live. However, what we must renounce is the belief that they belong to us. Everything that we have belongs to God alone. All of our resources are entrusted to us not only for our own use, but also so that we can help others. Once we renounce the idea that we possess or are entitled to anything, it is much easier to share the many gifts that God has given us. Then we truly are His Disciples.
