POPE FRANCIS
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
In our catechesis for this Holy Year of Mercy, we now turn to the parable of the Good Samaritan. Jesus had taught the
great commandment of love for God and neighbour. In reply to the question: “Who is my neighbour?”, he recounts the
story of the priest and the levite who pass by a man in need at the side of the road. Their religiosity is ultimately inau-
thentic, for it does not find expression in service to others. Love, the Lord tells us, is never abstract or distant; it “sees”
and it responds. The compassion shown by the Samaritan is an image of the infinite mercy of God, who always sees our
needs and draws near to us in love. The command to love God and neighbour, then, is supremely practical; it entails
caring for others even to the point of personal sacrifice. By the end of the parable, we see that the “neighbour” is not so
much the man in need, but rather the one who responded to that need with compassion. Jesus tells all of us to be neigh-
bours in this sense: “Go and do likewise”. He himself is the model of the Good Samaritan; by imitating his love and
compassion, we show ourselves truly to be his followers.

Facing the threat of physician-assisted suicide
As our country faces the moral and social threat of physician-assisted suicide, you are invited to call upon federal, provincial and
territorial legislators to defend and protect the lives of all, to renew efforts to guarantee accessible home care and palliative care, and
to protect the conscience rights of healthcare providers and agencies refusing to be part of euthanasia and assisted suicide. To share
your concerns with your legislators, visit http://www.canadiansforconscience.ca/.

RACHEL’S VINEYARD RETREAT
A Rachel's Vineyard Retreat will be held in Cache Creek from Wednesday, May 4 to Friday, May 6. The retreat is confi-
dential and is designed to help those suffering from abortion, miscarriage or other unresolved pregnancy loss. During
the past year, Rachel's Vineyard as an international organization has been doing a "Shockwaves" campaign. Basically,
they are reaching out to those affected by these losses and traumas beyond just the mothers and fathers directly in-
volved. Certainly grandparents, siblings, friends are also affected, and so too are health care workers, counsellors, preg-
nancy care workers and crisis phone line workers. All who are experiencing grief, pain, even anger, around such a loss
are most welcome and invited to attend the retreat.
It is not easy to come to a retreat. It is also not easy to ask someone you know who needs healing to attend one. The
healing that occurs each and every time is simply amazing. If you are suffering a little or a lot, or someone you know is
suffering, it doesn't have to be that way. Help is available. More information is available at
www.rachelsvineyardkamloops.org or on the Facebook page www.facebook.com/rvkamloops or by phone or text at
250-267-5081.
