Transition at Sacred Heart—The Parish Staff had lunch with Deacon Sam Basta and Father John Madigan this past Wednesday to have an opportunity to meet them before they begin at Sacred Heart in July. The Parish Transition Team is helping with events around our pastoral transition. The Parish Transition team members are: Emy Morris, Jeanne Sutherland, Mary Dickins, Mary Ciaramello, Matt Griffith, Renata Lampkin, Sean Cronkite, and Tracey Rus-sell. If you have any questions about transition, contact Mary Dickins at the Parish Office. Carol Guenther is “winding down” her ministry here at Sacred Heart; her last day at Sacred Heart will be June 29. Deacon Scott Pickett who will be the Pastoral Associate when Carol leaves will begin on Tuesday, June 26. Deacon Scott and Carol will have a few days together to assist in transition for both of them. Deacon Scott fin-ished his work at Eastside Catholic this past week; he is looking forward to beginning his ministry at Sacred Heart. Please keep our parish in your prayers during these days of change. Attending Priest Days—I will attend our annual Priest Days at Ocean Shores, Monday through Thursday this week. I will leave for Ocean Shores on Sunday afternoon and will return on Thursday afternoon. Please pray for me and for all the priests as we gather with Archbishop Sar-tain for this annual opportunity for continuing priestly sup-port and fraternity. Let us continue to work together to build up the Kingdom of God here at Sacred Heart.

GOING AWAY FOR CAROL GUENTHER Next weekend, June 23-24, will be Carol Guenther’s final weekend at Sacred Heart. Carol’s husband George is retir-ing after a career as a music educator, and Carol and George decided to enjoy working on their retreat center at Ocean Shores together. There will be a reception in honor of Carol after all three Masses next weekend as she re-quested. Please take the opportunity to thank Carol for her three years in ministry here at Sacred Heart and wish her will in the future.

BLESSING FOR FATHERS Let us remember and pray for all fathers this weekend, as our nation takes time to honor fathers. There will be a spe-cial blessing for fathers at all three Masses this weekend as we celebrate Father’s Day.

SOLEMNITY OF THE NATIVITY OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST

Next Sunday, June 24, is the solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. The Church only celebrates three nativities: Jesus, Mary, and John the Baptist. “John the Baptist was the great prophet and herald of Jesus the Messiah. He prepared the way of the Lord and revealed Jesus to others as both the Messiah and the Lamb of God. St. John exemplifies the Christian life as one who pro-claims the Gospel message of healing and repentance while he points out Christ to others and shows them the way to become united with God. This is an ancient so-lemnity, reaching back to the fourth century, though the date of the celebration varied in East and West. In the East, the birth of the forerunner was celebrated on the day after Epiphany, January, 7, because of the associa-tion of that feast with the Baptism of the Lord. In the West, it was celebrated on June 24, in keeping with Luke 1:36, which notes that Elizabeth was six months pregnant at the time of the Annunciation of the Lord.” (2018 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 239-240)

MEMORIAL OF SAINT ALOYSIUS GONZAGA

Thursday is the memorial of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga (1568-1591) who was ”born to a noble family in Italy who had him destined for the military. While recovering from an illness, he read the lives of the Saints and spent time in prayer. As a result, Aloysius decided to dedicate himself to God as a Jesuit. Most of his family was against it, but he joined anyway, making his vows in 1587. In 1591, the plague broke out in Rome. Aloysius volunteered to care for the victims and became sick him-self. He recovered, but he never became healthy, and he died within a few months. Many schools are named for him because he is the patron saint of Catholic youth.” (2018 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 234)

On May 18, 1968 I had the great joy and privilege of being ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Seattle. Being ordained a priest for 50 years has been a constant source of joy and I am so grateful for the opportunity to serve God’s people. I will be offering a Eucharist of Thanksgiving at Sacred Heart Church in Bellevue for these 50 years of ministry, on June 24th at 2pm. Sacred Heart Parish Youth Migrant Project

August 19-24, 2017

The Youth Migrant Project is a summer long ex-perience that provides current junior high youth (incoming grades 6, 7, 8) a unique opportunity to live in community and be of service to migrant families in the Skagit Valley. Parish youth groups serve for a week at a time throughout June, July and August. Participant jobs include: assisting in the day care centers, working at the Tri-Parish Food Bank, and visiting the migrant camps. A participant’s day also includes prayer, com-munity building, chores, and education about the needs of the poor.

SACRED HEART BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP meets monthly on the 4th Tuesday to discuss the book of the month. Our selection for June is: A CONSTELLATION OF VITAL PHENOMENA by An-thony Marra. Set in a rural village in Chechnya, this fic-tional work is the winner of the National Book Critics Circle’s inaugural John Leonard Prize and the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award in fiction, as well as the inaugural Carla Furstenberg Cohen Fiction Award.
