SCRIPTURE READING REFLECTION

Bear in mind that prophecy can be symbolic action just as much as words. In this Sunday’s first reading, this passage from Isaiah has been chosen to foretell that one originally in a prestigious position can be replaced by God. Note the terminology: the transfer of authority, the key to the House of David, “when he opens, no one shall shut, when he shuts, no one shall open.” Then look at the terminology in today’s Gospel. Recall last week we saw a focus on the need for interior faith. Today Jesus challenges the faith of His leading disciple (who represents all of us). Recall,2 weeks ago Peter jumped out of the boat during a fierce storm and began to walk on water to meet Jesus, but then his faith wavered. Jesus criticized him not for imprudence, but because his faith was not strong enough. Recall back in July, the implications of Jesus regularly calling himself by the mysterious title Son of Man, which had many meanings for His contemporaries. Note well how He questions. He starts with: ”Who do people say the Son of Man is?” (Notice one possible answer is the return of Elijah, like was thought when Jesus called out from the cross). Jesus then follows with: “But, who do you say…?” Peter’s reply joins Son of Man, which Jesus calls Himself to Messiah/Christ (son of David) and to Son of God! Somebody among Jesus’ disciples finally got it! Unfortunately there is not enough space here to delve into the three things Jesus immediately promises in response. E.g. Matt. 7:24 “Anyone who hears My words and puts them into practice is like the wise man who builds his house on rock.” (rather than sand). Jesus is building a new house (replacing the old House of Israel) on rock (there is no the rock/Peter in the original Greek.)

ATTENTION!! Sacred Heart parishioners, we are in need of homemade or store bought white baby blankets. Sacred Heart provides a blessed white blanket to all newly baptized babies as a welcome into the church. These blankets can be delivered to Barbara at the rectory. Thank you.

TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 23, 2020

SCHOOL NEWS

**The Governor just announced that our schools are clear to reopen in the Fall. We will continue to monitor the data but as of today, we are looking to open our doors with in person instruction five days a week! Review our Reopening Plan on our website and read the SchoolReach message which was sent to registered families.

REOPENING PLAN HAS BEEN SUBMITTED:

Our goal is to reopen with in person instruction for grades UPK3 to grade 6 students with safety protocols in place. This has been an interesting summer that continues to challenge us to adjust according to state, county, local public school district and diocesan guidelines. The Reopening Plan is available on our website for your viewing pleasure: www.SacredHeartSchoolTroy.com

THANK YOU!

Special thanks to Senator Breslin and all of our SHS parish/school families for donating masks, hand sanitizers, sanitizing wipes and gloves to our growing supplies. These will be so important as we strive to reopen our school with in person PK3 to 6th grade instruction.

2020-2021 Registration:

Registration for our UPK 3 year old, UPK 4 year old, Early Childhood 3-4 year old and grades K-6 continues. Registration packets and information are just a phone call away! As always, you are all invited to schedule a personal tour of your school at any time. Simply contact the school office at 518-274-3655 to make these arrangements. You may also email Mrs. MacLasco: [email protected].

We know that you will be amazed at all of the wonderful things that are happening here in your school! There are limited openings in many of our classrooms due to our Reopening Plan and social distancing measures.

SUMMER OFFICE HOURS: The school office will be open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00 until noon each day. You can also leave a voicemail message on our phone at 518-274-3655 or email the office at [email protected].
