Entrance: Sing A Joyful Song #540
Sing a joyful song to the Lord! Alleluia! Let the heavens and earth rejoice! Alleluia! Alleluia! The heavens proclaim God’s name, and earth in reply echoes back with joyful songs of praise!
Our God is a mighty God, unequaled in pow’r, yet with gentle mercy covers the earth.
Sing praise, O Jerusalem! Sing praise to your King, ruling earth with justice age after age. First Reading: Deuteronomy 6:2-6
Responsorial Psalm
I love you, Lord, my strength. Second Reading: Hebrews 7:23-28 Gospel: Mark 12:28b-34
Nicene Creed
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Offertory: O Beauty, Ever Ancient #524
Oh, late have I loved you, oh, late have I turned; turned from seeking you in creatures, fleeing grief and pain within.
O Beauty, ever ancient, O Beauty, ever new; you, the mirror of my life renewed, let me find my life in you!
My unloveliness I ran from, turned to seek you in all things, things you fashioned as a pathway; yet I lost myself in them. Communion: A New Commandment
I give you a new commandment: "Love one another, as I have loved you, As I have loved you." Recessional: For All the Saints #709
For all the saints who from their labors rest, Who you by faith before the world confessed, Your name, O Jesus, be forever blest. Alleluia! Alleluia!
O blest communion, fellowship divine! We feebly struggle, they in glory shine; Yet all are one within your great design. Alleluia! Alleluia!
The golden evening brightens in the west; Soon to the loyal faithful comes their rest; Sweet is the calm of Paradise so blest. Alleluia! Alleluia!

From the Pastor’s Desk 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time: The First of all the Commandments
Jesus knew his Torah! When the scribe in today’s gospel asks Jesus which is the first of all the commandments, Jesus quotes the Book of Deuteronomy, as we heard in our first reading today: “Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.” He doesn’t wait for the scribe to ask him what the second greatest commandment is. He simply goes on to tell him: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” In case he may have been tempted to ask Jesus further, the Lord tells him, “There is no other commandment greater than these.” Jesus was so gentle and kind in his response. He didn’t ask the scribe why he was asking; he would have already known! Jesus doesn’t accuse him of trying to trap him; he would answer honestly and correctly. For us, the challenge is ask ourselves if we are living these commandments in our daily life. Do I serve, worship, adore and love only God alone? Or are there other gods who compete for my attention, other gods whom I serve with my time, talent and treasure? What are those gods who seek to take me away from the Lord? What do they promise me; can they deliver? Jesus promises eternal life to all who believe in him and he offered his life, sealing his promise with his own blood. Does God have all of my heart? Is there anything I’m holding back from God? Is there still room for me to grow in my relationship with the Lord? Does my very soul, like that of Mary, our Blessed Mother, proclaim the greatness of the Lord? Do I love God with all my mind; do I put God first in my thoughts, my attention, my reflection and meditation? Do I love God with all my strength? Do I work my spiritual muscles, as I work my bodily muscles? Do I draw strength and courage from the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist and Reconciliation? The scribe that day also answered correctly: “to love him [God] with all your heart, with all your understand-ing, with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.” What good are those offerings and sacrifices if God is not at the heart of them? If I don’t love God and my neighbor? As we prepare to enter into the last few weeks of the present liturgical year, let us do so with our minds and hearts open to Sacred Scriptures which are leading us the celebration of Corpus Christi Sunday. Let us pray for the grace, the courage, the wisdom, and the insight we need to strengthen our relationship with the Lord. In preparation for the celebration of Thanksgiving, perhaps we might begin to make a list of blessings for which we are most grateful - and add to it each day as we recognize the many gifts God gives us which make it possible for us to love Him above all, and our neighbor as ourself.
All Saints Day This Monday we celebrate the solemnity of All Saints. Had November 1st not fallen on a Monday, it would still
be a day of obligation for us to attend Mass together. This celebration commemorates and venerates all those men and women that the Church acknowledges have lived good and holy lives, worthy of imitation, and who are now sharing in God’s life and happiness with Him in heaven.
Each member of the Church, the Body of Christ, is called to holiness. The living members of the early Church were often called saints. On November 1st we recall the heroic lives of those men and women named saints for the choices they made for good, even in the midst of very difficult, trying and often tempting situations. As we already know, many of the saints suffered martyrdom for their faith. Even still today many people suffer persecution for their profession of faith in Jesus. The saints can be a source of great inspiration for us and can assist us through their intercessory prayer for us from their place in heaven. They are role models that we can aspire to be like, to imitate, and to learn from.
An important reminder: We pray to God through the intercession of the saints. We venerate (honor) them, although we do not worship them; we worship God alone. “We petition them to intercede for us with our heavenly Father. They are living a deep, personal and loving relationship with God; they have proven their friendship by the extraordinary goodness of their lives while on earth.” (Michael F. Pennock)
Many of us have patron saints, personal heroes who inspire us to live our lives deeply rooted in Christ and who assist us by bringing our prayers before the throne of God. The saints were real live, flesh-and-blood people and many of them struggled to live the gospel passage we hear proclaimed in the liturgy for all All Saints day, namely the Beatitudes found in the Gospel of Matthew (5:1-12)
I invite you to pray for the intercession of your patron saint this weekend. Perhaps learn something about another saint that you don’t know much about. There are so many resources available on line and in bookstores, to help us learn about their lives.
May your day be filled with many graces as you live out your call to be a saint, a holy one. Let’s continue to pray for each other on our journey toward salvation and sanctification.
SHHS Faculty, Staff, and Students: A Real Source of Pride and Gratitude Sacred Heart High School faculty, staff and students demonstrated their pride in and dedication to Sacred Heart
High School. Almost 120 prospective students and their parents visited the high school at the two open houses we sponsored last week. There was a tremendous amount of energy and enthusiasm from our students, faculty and staff. Many of our guests praised our student tour guides and thanked us for their warm hospitality and cheerfulness. It was not an act! I told many of our visiting parents that it is not uncommon to see students remaining at the school long after the final bell has rung. I often remind the students that we love them and can’t wait to see them again – tomorrow! We truly have great kids. I know you expect to hear that from me, but it is really true! I beam with pride and gratitude when visitors tell me how polite, respectful and kind our students are – and I agree!
In addition to all the other responsibilities our teachers have, every one of them gave up their Saturday morning and afternoon, as well as another evening until 8:30 PM to participate in the Open Houses. I am so grateful to them for all that they do day in and day out to support our mission of education and spiritual development of our students.
I am so grateful to the 54 students who joined me and two other staff members at the North Yonkers Community Fund’s Chili Hilly which was held at Tibbetts Brook Park last Saturday. Together we comprised almost 20% of the 300+ participants. The proceeds of this fundraiser support students on different educational levels and in different schools to help them in their pursuit of knowledge and wisdom. Another great day of pride and gratitude.
Thank you to all our fellow parishioners who also participated in the Chili Hilly. Sacred Heart was well represented and the greetings from the many Sacred Heart folks were both seen and heard! Go Irish!
Thanksgiving Season is Upon Us It’s hard to believe that the month of November is upon us! So many of us turn our thoughts to the season of
Thanksgiving and expressing our gratitude for the many blessings that God has bestowed upon us. As we journey toward the celebration of Thanksgiving, may I share the following suggestions and ideas for your
consideration? Plan ahead, now, to attend Mass with us on Thanksgiving Day at 9:00 AM. Bring with you a food item for
your table that will be blessed at the end of the Mass. Beginning November 1st, make a daily list of the blessings you are most grateful for and bring them with you for
Mass on Thanksgiving Day. A special basket will be available for you to place your lists in and then we will present them at the offertory and leave them on one of our side altars with a lit candle.
Please support our Thanksgiving Food Drive. Last year more than 300 baskets were donated to needy families. We need all the makings of a Thanksgiving Basket: stuffing, potatoes, cranberry sauce, canned vegetables, etc. In next week’s bulletin we will include a more comprehensive list of the most needed food items. It’s hard for us to imagine a family or an individual not having the necessary ingredients for a Thanksgiving meal.
My sincere and humble thanks and gratitude for all that you do for so many, so regularly. Equally important, if not more so, thank you for who you! I am grateful to be your pastor and fellow parishioner! Fr. Bob
Shadow Days at Sacred Heart High School We wish to invite any 8th grade student interested in spending a “shadow day” at
Sacred Heart High School to please contact our Director of Admissions, Mr. Brendan Clark, by phone or email at 914-965-3114, Ext. 114 or
[email protected] for more information. Due to Covid restrictions, shadow day space is limited.
All visitor protocols remain in effect. These days are a wonderful opportunity to see the school, meet faculty and staff
and spend the day with students in each of their classes. Many present students tell us they made their decision to attend Sacred Heart
High School after having spent a shadow day with us. Come join us!

At the Annual Schoolgirls and Schoolboys Race (104 miles) at Tibbetts Park on Saturday, October 23rd, 2 Sacred Heart students were this year’s
winners! In the meet, that dates back to 1908, 8th grader Aaron Irish-Bramble became the new Boys’ Champion. Melanie Romero, also in 8th
grade, won for the 5th year in a row. No one else in the long history of the meet has won more than twice! Our runners will be competing next in the
New York Junior Olympics on November 14th at Van Cortlandt Park. Congratulations to our athletes!
