SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT COSHOCTON, OHIO 43812 DECEMBER 6, 2009 Pastor’s Column Pastor’s Column Pastor’s Column Pastor’s Column Dear fellow parishioners, here are some updates: concerning the water leak: the workers did not find as bad a situation as anticipated. The break was near the Rectory and the rest of the pipe was viable and they were able to put a support “sleeve” through instead of replacing it. Only a small section had to be dug up from the edge of the parking lot to the Rectory. The cost, work and inconvenience were actually minimal! The water was reconnected that Monday – just five days instead of the worst case scenario of nearly two weeks! There is a God and He answers prayers! Some folks asked why only one banner was hanging on the reredos (decorative screen behind the altar – great Scrabble word). Easy answer, we were only in the first week of Advent. The rest will come (be added) as we journey through Advent. The intention of the banners is to make the Advent progression more visual (in addition to the wreath). Other indications of Advent: the Mass setting being used is Mass of Creation (more joyful and exuberant); no Gloria (the song of the angels will return to the Sunday Mass celebrations when we again touch the eternal moment of the glory and humility of Jesus’ birth); green to purple (the color reflects royalty, humility, penitence - think Jesus’ encounter with Herod). Also, like last year, I am using Eucharistic Prayer IV which is based on the Creed. This option allows us to see the connection between the Creed (our core faith beliefs) and the reality of the Real Presence which unites us as the Body of Christ. A few questions (as well as compliments) came to me about the Missals. I am glad that people are coming to me directly rather than using other venues. If you want to spread good things about our parish – please use as many other venues as you like! Anyway, after reviewing the costs for Music Issue and the seasonal missalettes, it was determined that the one Missal (same publisher!) was more financially, user, and environmentally friendly. We don’t have to purchase any seasonal or daily complements (saves us hundreds over the year); these have the scripture citations and psalm responses for everyday (daily Mass goers will appreciate this) and we save trees (it’s good to go green!). I understand the Sacred Heart Prayer is missing from some (many?) of the books; we’re working to have this remedied by the time you read this (which I hope you’re not doing during the homily). Finally, this week we celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (Solemnity!), a “holy day of obligation” (repeat three times). See elsewhere in the bulletin for Mass times. This is the commemoration of Mary’s conception through her parents, Joachim and Anne (Church Tradition). Jesus’ conception commemoration date is March 25. Let us continue to pray for each other. Know that you are in mine always. Peace & Blessings, Fr. November 30, 2009

Dear Parish Family,

The word “awesome” is often over used, but our recent experience in Kansas City at the National Catholic

Youth Conference was AWESOME with capital letters! I could not have been prouder of the eight young

people from our high school youth group. They were ladies and gentlemen every minute of the trip! They were

respectful and always willing to show up, step up, and step out. I believe that each of them found it a great

renewing experience.

It was amazing to see, hear, and feel twenty one thousand (21,000) Catholic teenagers express their faith and

values. It gave each one the sense that he or she is not alone in their beliefs. It was especially marvelous for

those who had not attended in the past to see how many of their peers across the United States share a common

bond with them. The closing mass included giving communion to approximately 23,000 youth and adults! I

need to use the word AWESOME again!!

The presenters did a fine job of teaching that Christ reigns in us through the more serious side of our religion,

but, also, through humor and the funnier side of life. Speakers such as Father Tony and the Master of

Ceremonies (Steve) were fantastic with firm but reassuring messages that they delivered in a straight forward,

no nonsense manner. Our Sacred Heart youth related very well to what they heard.

Some of the comments on the bus ride back included the following: “I’m glad I got the chance to attend

NCYC.” … ”I’m ecstatic to have experienced NCYC” … ”NCYC was tremendous” … “I am so happy that I

had the opportunity to attend an event of such amazing caliber” … ”I don’t think I’ll ever forget it” … “Thanks

for making it possible for us to go” … “It was a tremendous experience that I will never forget!” …. and

…. “Thank you for allowing us to attend NCYC and grow as Catholic youth.”

The group will be sending several thank you notes, but I want to take this opportunity to say “THANK YOU” to

everyone who helped out in so many ways including baking; purchasing baked goods, fruits, and vegetables;

donating products and money; putting up the tent and taking it down; hosting fundraisers such as the soup

supper and pancake breakfast; and everything else. The trip could not have been taken without you!

Oh, one more thing. I’ve chaperoned several hundred student events in my lifetime, but without a doubt Barb

Hilgenberg and Frank Cichon were the finest adults with whom I’ve ever had the pleasure of sharing

chaperoning responsibilities. Sorry, but I just have to use AWESOME again in describing them!! ☺

From all of us to all of you … Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Sincerely,

Joy Padgett
