Anatomy of the Sacroiliac Joint

Thesacroiliac(SI)jointconnectsthesacrum,whichisthelowestbonysegmentofthespine,withthelowerlimbsoneachside.

TheSIjointtransmitsmostoftheweightloadsfromtheupperbodytothelowerlimbs,actingasashockabsorber,relievingforcesonthespine.TheSIjointisreinforcedbystrongligaments,limitingmotioninthejoint.

TheSIjointtypicallyhasthefollowingcharacteristics: •Reinforcedbystrongligamentsandmuscles •Limitedinmotion •Transmitsmostoftheforcesoftheupperbodytothepelvisandlegs •Actsasashockabsorber

Possible Causes and Symptoms of SI Joint Dysfunction

Symptoms

ThemostcommonsymptomofSIjointdysfunctionispain.Patientsoftenexperiencepainintheareaofthesacrum(tailbone),upperbuttocks,upperthigh,oruppergroin.

Thepaincanleadtoissueswithsleeping,sitting,andwalking.

The pain typically worsens with standing and walking,whilelessseverewhenlyingdown.SwellingandarthritisintheSIjointcanalsocausepainandstiffnessinthepelvis.

Thecauseofsacroiliacjointpainisunknown;however,itmayoccurwithtraumaorinjury.

Chronic Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction

SIjointdysfunctionisaconditioninwhichthepatienthaschronicpainassociatedwiththeSIjoint.Sacroiliitisisaconditioninwhichoneorboth oftheSIjointsareswollenorinflamed.

TheSIjointisapotentialsourceoflowerbackandlimbpain.SIjoint problemscanresultinissueswithsurroundingligamentsandmuscles.

How is the Procedure Performed?

A minimally invasive surgical approach isusedtoimplanttheSI-LOK™ Sacroiliac JointFixationSystem,tohelpminimizedisruption to the underlying muscles and tissues.A2–4cmincisionismadeas indicated,usingXraysduringsurgery.

ThesurfacesofthejointarepreparedandscrewsareplacedacrosstheSIjoint.Using titanium alloy implants helps to maintain fixation and may help with recovery(e.g.weightbearing).Yourdoctorwilldeterminetheappropriateimplanttypeandsizeforyourcondition.

Contraindications and Warnings

Youmaybecontraindicatedforthisdeviceifyouhaveaninfection,acongenitalabnormality,areobese,pregnant,mentallyill,diabetic,sufferfromrheumatoidarthritis,osteoporosis,orcancer.

Aswithanysurgicalprocedure,complicationsmayoccurfollowingtheplacementofthisdevice.Thesecanincludebutarenotlimitedtoearlyorlateimplantbending,failure,loosening,movement/migration,bonefracture,andallergicreactiontoimplantmaterial.

Othergeneralcomplicationsassociatedwithanyspinalprocedureinclude non-unionordelayedunion,pseudarthrosis,pain,secondsurgery,bleeding,earlyorlateinfection,spinalcordand/ornervedamage,incisionalcomplication,scarformation,bloodvesseldamage,cardiovascularsystemcompromise,respiratoryproblems,complicationsduetobonegrafting,reactionstoanesthesia,impotence,sexualdysfunction,paralysis,anddeath.
