Such is the overly time-casual nature of print publishing that, while you’ll all be handling this, our esteemed organ, from February 8th, as I write it is still the very end of January, and the epic expanse of Amsterdam and ISE looms before us, like the threatening black shadow of some colossal, whirling windmill of unfixable foot pain, chronic gin intake and absolute cutting-edge tech eyeballing exhaustion. We’ve been in training for the event since early December last year, but nothing can ever quite prepare you for the sheer scale of CI’s biggest European expo, and many, over the years, have underestimated ISE and ended forever lost down the rabbit hole of the high-tech. Will Bontell and I survive to tell the tale of what went down in The Dam? Well, there it is, there’s your cliff-hanger for this issue. You’ll just have to tune in next issue to find out… Phew, eh? I bet the suspense is killing you now! But, while you wallow in that, admittedly, mild, nagging sense of uncertainty, why not indulge in a moment of distraction by delving deep into the, utterly opposite, completely cocksure pages of our March issue, and frolick in the unquestionably firm fact that they hold. From the certitude of our collective CCTV-based smart security to the relentless reliance you can have in our assembled industry experts, and everything else in between, SVI March, unlike the fate of Bontell and I, is nothing short of a concrete collection of custom installation certainty. So, enjoy what this issue has to offer and, if we don’t see you at ISE, we will see you next month for more. Or will we? Oh, the suspense…

Industry NewsThe Who-What-Where-When-Why of AV and CI

This April sees the arrival of the CAI’s Evolving Connectivity trade event. EC2019 will open its doors on Thursday 25th April and host 26 exhibitors, showcasing more than 75 brands.

For the 5th year running, Evolving Connectivity will be held at the National Motorcycle Museum near Birmingham. Due to the continuing success of the event, we’ve increased the floor space available for exhibitors, now totalling over 1200m² in the Britannia Suite, with an increased number of stands, and the Manxman Suite with an increased number of seats in the seminar theatre. Birmingham remains the centre for Evolving Connectivity because it offers easy access for all modes of transport – hub of the UK’s motorway network, free parking at the National Motorcycle Museum, Birmingham International Rail Station and Birmingham Airport which has great links for our Scottish, Irish and European visitors.

Many of the installers we speak to report that business is brisk, but that they need to keep their fingers on the pulse in order to ensure future success. Consequently, many exhibitors will be showcasing products from the traditional parts of our industry as well as new technologies, especially those linked to Smart Home or Home Networking.

On the eve of the trade show, CAI will host its annual Gala Awards Dinner for 130 trade colleagues to network and celebrate industry achievements. This sell-out event is a relaxed and entertaining night which brings existing and new partnerships together. A limited number of event sponsorship opportunities are still available and are a great way to market your business to the signal distribution, audio visual and custom install industry.evolvingconnectivity.comcai.org.uk

PARASOUND PRIZEA Parasound Hi-Fi system signed by the rock star and platinum-selling artist, Fish, recently sold at auction in aid of Fish’s chosen charity, Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland, and the lucky winner was able to meet his musical hero during the presentation of the proceeds to the charity.

The CEDIA Designer’s latest software update enables integrators to quickly email their clients an immersive VR render file of any proposed theatre room – without the need for specialist viewing equipment.

Global cloud-based home theatre design software, The CEDIA Designer (TCD) has launched a significant update which enables its users to quickly produce an immersive VR render file depicting the finished cinema room, ready to send to a client. This update takes TCD’s render tool functionality one step further, allowing users to provide their clients with an immersive preview of their potential cinema room, without the need to invest in specialised VR-enabled equipment.

The client can open the immersive render file directly from an email and view it on an Android or iOS phone, tablet, or computer. If opening and viewing on a phone or tablet, all the client needs do is download a free panorama viewer app such as Photosphere or Panorama 360 Camera, then open the file using the chosen app to view their cinema room. For an immersive visual experience, the client can view the file using an inexpensive Google Cardboard (or similar) headset and compatible panorama file viewer app.

The immersive render replicates the exact dimensions of the room entered by the integrator in the initial design, including the screen size and position, whether the projector is in-room or on a lifter, or whether the room has a coffer or a starlit ceiling. All seating and in-room equipment will appear exactly as specified in the user’s design, replicating the correct location and configuration. Users can choose from an ever-expanding list of fabrics, colours and textures for the walls, carpets and ceilings.

There are four levels in the tool, TCD’s immersive render functionality is only available for subscribers to Cinema Room and Cinema Room Pro tiers. With Cinema Room Pro annual subscription ($500 member/$850 non-member), this new functionality is included for free as a new value-added feature. For those subscribing to any of the other Cinema Room and Cinema Room Pro levels each use of the VR tool is $25 member/$75 non-member per design.cedia.net

New? SVI’s round-up of all the very latest product news. If it isn’t here, it isn’t happening…

What’s

PREMIUM QUALITYThe new Premium 701, 501 and 301 speakers from Piega constitute the technical and visual continuation of one of the most successful speaker concepts produced by the Swiss manufacturer. To refine their appearance, Swiss designer Stephan Hürlemann has fitted the front covers flush into the C-shaped cabinet profile, creating a formal harmony that blends perfectly into any room. The stunning finish of the polished aluminium reflects the loving craftsmanship that has also shaped the interior of the speakers.

State-of-the-art chassis technology gives the new Premium trio its breathtaking sound quality. While the two smaller models use the trusted Piega LDR 2642 MKII tweeters, the Premium 701 flagship range is the first model equipped with the new LDR 3056 ribbon tweeters. This tweeter system benefits from all important insights gained during the development of the Piega Line Source Driver and the second-generation Piega Coax System. Its thin membrane has a newly developed suspension and is perfectly controlled by mass-free damping. Thanks to its optimised magnet system, new foil layout and the enormous effort that went into its development and manufacture, the system has an extremely high degree of efficiency, a greater bandwidth and linearity and an impressive resolution. The massive aluminium front panel of the LDR 3056 makes the transition from the membrane to the baffle board completely homogeneous.

Its deep mid-range speakers are precisely calibrated to the new cabinet and ribbon tweeters. The MDS cone drivers are designed for especially long-stroke motions. Despite their slim cabinets and the correspondingly small diameter of 120mm and 140mm respectively, they produce an impulsive and dynamic bass sound that stays powerful even in medium-sized rooms.piega.ch

Premium 701The Premium 701 is barely larger than its smaller sister model. It also uses a 2.5-way system. Two 140mm MDS converters cater for the bass, one of the two also handles mid-tone emission. The newly developed LDR 3056 ribbon, used here for the very first time, produces the high tones. The Premium 701 can be operated in almost any room thanks to its dynamic and powerful sound.Price: £5100.00pr

Premium 501This extremely slim column loudspeaker, which is only 16cm wide and about one metre tall, is the perfect partner for high-quality Hi-Fi systems in small to medium-sized rooms. The two long-stroke 120 mm MDS low mid-range drivers and the tried-and-tested LDR 2642 MKII ribbon, already praised in numerous test reviews, help the PIEGA Premium 501 to achieve a homogeneous, very detailed and spatial sound.Price: £3700.00pr

Premium 301The Premium 301 is a compact loudspeaker with a baffle about the size of an A4 sheet. Behind the removable fabric cover, a 140mm MDS low mid-range driver and the LDR 2642 MKII ribbon tweeter ensure homogeneous transmission of all frequencies from 39- to 50kHz. Whether on the shelf, on a sideboard or on a stand – the PIEGA Premium 301 is an illustrious and elegant sound transducer for small to medium sized rooms.Price: £2100.00pr

BIG, BAD WOLF Demonstrated to great effect at the recent ISE, Wolf Cinema’s new TXF-3500 UHD/8K home cinema projector is the company’s first 8K home cinema projector, casting an astounding 8192 x 4320 on-screen image from all favourite SD, HD and UHD/4K sources.

“We premiered this astonishing new ensemble last month, and folks marvelled at the imaging fidelity, detail, colour accuracy and what was described simply as true filmic imaging,” says Wolf Cinema’s Director of Sales, Jim McGall. “The recent leap from HD to 4K was an important step forward in our world, but this reference 8K ensemble presents one of the most realistic images ever cast from all readily available film, video and television sources.

“One of the most enjoyable things to witness is when folks see this projector for the first time, walk up to the screen, stand centimetres away and cannot discern any visible pixel structure! The image is incredibly sharp and detailed, but up close the picture as cast looks more like 35 or 70mm film. I’m constantly amazed at how much better 8K projected images can look, when compared with current leading-edge imaging technologies. And what’s best of all, our TXF-3500 Ultra 8K ensemble is eminently affordable, priced within the reach of many video enthusiasts.”wolfcinema.com

Q THE MUSIC Building on the success of its flagship 500 model, Q Acoustics has developed the ground-breaking Concept 300 (£2999). Harbouring leading edge acoustic and speaker stand technology, this standmount is the company’s most progressive loudspeaker yet, refining and advancing all the technological highlights of its bigger brother, while boasting a statement interior-friendly design.

As its flagship standmount model, the Concept 300 sports a premium design and finish to match its audio innovations. Combining real wood veneers with multiple gloss lacquer, the dual finish is sophisticated and stylish to fit seamlessly into any interior space, while the introduction of a new eye-catching silver and ebony finish joins the elegant gloss black/rosewood and gloss white/oak models.

Working in tandem with the Dual Gelcore™ construction to further eradicate sound-degrading internal vibrations is the extra P2P™ (Point to Point) bracing fitted to interior areas of the cabinet susceptible to low-end frequency reverberations.

The entire mass of the speaker rests on four springs, damped using a special material called Sylodamp™. A polyurethane elastomer, precisely tailored to the mass of the speaker converts any vibrational energy in the springs

into heat. The result is a more controlled but extended bass response and improved stereo imaging.

The Concept 300 also features the wide-dispersion high-frequency driver and isolating mount developed for Concept 500. This design protects the tweeter from sending or receiving unwanted vibrations and allows it to be mounted close to the mid-bass driver, enhancing integration with the larger mid/bass driver and improving timing.

The Q Acoustics Concept 300 dual finish model (including Tensegrity stand) comes in three finishes: Gloss Black/Rosewood, Gloss White/Oak and Silver/Ebony and is available from March 2019, priced £2999 (SRP).qacoustics.co.uk

FINGER ON THE

We hear from Pulse-Eight as they are shortlisted in no fewer than five SVI Trade Award categories…

British AV manufacturers, Pulse-Eight, are proud to be shortlisted in five SVI Award categories this year and are excited for the final stages of voting.

As a true British brand, our 24,000sq ft head office in Poole, Dorset hosts our hub of innovation where we design and manufacture all of our products in-house. Pulse-Eight have unrivalled knowledge and passion for the AV industry and ensure we impart that passion into everything we design and build – one of the reasons we truly believe we deserve to win the ‘Best Manufacturer’ category for this year’s awards.

Also shortlisted is the neo:X matrix, our newest fixed format video matrix which features 8 HDMI inputs, 8 HDBaseT and 2 HDMI outputs plus a built-in audio matrix. With ARC (audio return channel), the neo:X can handle all

audio signals so there is no requirement for additional hardware for processes such as relaying the audio from a smart TV application to stream through separate speakers within the install. Also supporting ARC is the neo:Ultra HDMI Extender set which, at only 13mm high, creates a discreet installation but implements the latest technology. Both the neo:X and the neo:Ultra Extender support 4K/60, 4:4:4, 8bit or 4K/60 4:2:2, 12bit up to 100 meters and supports 1080p up to an impressive 150 metres!

The fourth category is ‘Best Specialist App’. The neo Android app is our exclusive application, designed by our internal software engineers who designed the internal software for all of our products. By creating the app ourselves we have ensured that it not only works seamlessly with our matrices but creates a unique experience with our smartly designed features. To instantly load the virtual remote we also created the neo:Tap which is shortlisted for the ‘Best Wireless Control Device’ category. This device works with any NFC enabled mobile device to instantly launch the virtual remote by simply tapping it on the completely wireless neo:Tap.pulse-eight.com

SVI BRISTOL HI-FI SHOW PREVIEW

It’s wagons west, as the UK biggest and best Hi-Fi show returns to the edge of the Avon. Here’s what not to miss…

THE GOLD 100With the combination of a powerful 6 1/2-inch RDT II bass/mid- range driver and an MPD tweeter, the performance of a true high-end two-way speaker is assured. The powerful bass driver utilises a 50mm diameter voice coil, which yields huge power handling capability.

THE GOLD 200Whilst remaining compact, the Gold 200 has a more traditional design format with two powerful 6.5-inch drivers and a mid-range/MPD module in a full three-way system. This design ensures the drivers are working optimally, delivering wide-band sound naturally and with incredibly low distortion.

THE GOLD 300The Gold 300 is recommended for larger rooms and requires at least 30cm between the speaker and wall to allow the system to breathe and perform optimally.

THE GOLD C250The mid/high frequency module featured in the C250 has allowed Monitor Audio to

Each of the six models in the Gold Series has been painstakingly designed and meticulously constructed by a team of dedicated engineers and craftsmen.

Every detail of design has been refined to create an exquisite range of loudspeakers that bring a sense of luxury to any room. Assembled by Monitor Audio’s team of craftsmen, each Gold speaker is beautifully finished to ensure that their combination of premium audio technology and class-leading build quality delivers a compelling hi-fi and home cinema listening experience.

For the first time, Gold features the technology used in Monitor Audio’s flagship Platinum II loudspeakers. The Platinum II drivers have been especially re-developed and honed for Gold and they are secured inside the well-damped cabinets using Monitor Audio’s renowned single bolt mechanism to give a clean appearance.

With their stunning looks, premium feel and high-end sound, the Gold series offers a performance that is articulate, clear, smooth and easy on the ear.Stand: Empire 1 Suitemonitoraudio.com

B&W 600 SERIESThe Bowers & Wilkins 600 Series is celebrating its 24th anniversary, and the launch of its sixth generation by taking on a starring role at the Bristol HiFi Show.

Visitors to the Bowers & Wilkins demo room – the Wallace Suite on the Lower Ground Floor – will be able to audition all three stereo speakers from the new range, including What Hi-Fi?’s recent Five- Star-winning 607 and 606 stand-mounts.

Meanwhile, in the What Hi-Fi? demo room, visitors will be able to hear a very special 600 Series based 7.2 multi-channel system, configured by the Bowers & Wilkins and What Hi-Fi? teams for the Bristol Show. The system will feature six 603 floor-standing speakers, the HTM6 dedicated centre channel speaker and two DB4S subwoofers – all combining to ensure a real not-to-be missed audio experience.Stand: Wallace Suitebowers- wilkins.com

create a high-performance three-way speaker with beautifully compact dimensions. The design of the C250 eradicates the need for two different centre speaker options in the Gold Series, as it creates a wide horizontal dispersion to give coverage wherever in the room the listener is positioned.

THE GOLD FXThe Gold FX speakers features two 4-inch C-CAM drivers and two MPD high frequency transducers. The FX can be flush-mounted on side or rear walls to blend unobtrusively with any interior.

THE GOLD W12 SUBWOOFERThe Gold W12’s powerful long throw 12-inch driver is augmented by two auxiliary bass radiators, precisely tuned to assist the main driver in delivering thunderous bass lines right down to 20Hz.

A 600W Class-D amplifier (Hypex manufactured) is perfectly matched to a high current switching power supply to ensure continuous delivery of high sound pressure levels, whilst accurately reproducing peak transients.

MONITOR AUDIO GOLD SERIESMonitor Audio has melded the finest materials and decades of loudspeaker know-how to lovingly create their new Gold series of loudspeakers.

The rounded vertical edges of the cabinets combined with the sharp profile of the horizontal lines give a classic and timeless appearance. A soft touch panel on the top of the speakers (stand mount and floorstanding) adds a further sophisticated appeal to the Gold series. With a choice of ultra-smooth premium finishes (dark walnut or ebony real wood veneer and piano gloss black or satin white), the loudspeakers exude a graceful style wherever they are positioned.

These improvements have allowed for a smaller number of models and there are now six different speakers – a single stand mount model, two floorstanders, single centre speaker, rear/FX speakers and subwoofer.monitoraudio.com

Atlantic Technology specialises in complete high-performance multi-channel speaker systems for serious home cinemas.

THX certification ensures only the very best results, which conform to the rigorous standards set by the THX Lucasfilm organisation. Products such as the IW-30LCR provide an in-wall solution that can be mounted behind a perforated screen in a custom-built baffle wall, or on view to the side of a screen thanks to the bezel-less design. It is a 3-way system with a long-excursion 8-inch woofer, two high-power 3½-inch midranges and Atlantic’s exclusive 1” Low Resonance Tweeter (LRT™). The midranges and tweeter are arrayed in a vertical M-T-M configuration, in a separate sealed enclosure, isolated from the woofer. The entire M-T-M assembly rotates 90 degrees, so the tweeter-midrange array can be kept in the optimum vertical orientation for optimum dispersion, even if mounted horizontally.

Matching bi/di-pole surrounds and an active in-wall subwoofer, all THX Ultra 2 certified, are available for a tonal constant across the cinema.

Atlantic also manufactures a range of free-standing THX certified speakers for use in situations where in-wall and in-ceiling mounting is not possible, but performance compromise is not an option. Included in this range is the 44 DA Dolby Atmos speaker. Incorporating a 130mm (5¼-inch) woofer and 25mm (1-inch) silk dome tweeter in a concentric driver array (CDA), it fires from the top of the speaker enclosure at a precisely determined angle, to achieve the optimum effect. Full Dolby Amtos installations with in-ceiling speakers are possible using the company’s IC-6 OBA speaker, specifically designed to be used as the “elevation” component in an Object Based Audio system such as Dolby Atmos® and also Auro 3D® or DTS:X®.connecteddistribution.com

The VG3 features a capacitive touch interface featuring power off and on, easy-touch track and pairing control and a fuel-gauge LED array that shows power, battery and volume. The speaker’s active down-firing woofer sets it apart in its size and provides rich, clear and powerful bass.

With its down-firing 6-inch woofer and two 3-inch full range drivers, the VG5 produces plentiful low-end sound to fill the expanses of any listening environment. And, with the addition of DTS Play-Fi, the identically sized VG10 becomes the first portable speaker to incorporate this ground-breaking technology. It can be paired with up to 30 different interoperable speakers, sound bars and receivers in the Play-Fi ecosystem, enabling the user to enjoy high-quality lossless audio in any environment.

The largest model in the range, the VG7 utilises a 7-inch long-throw woofer in a downward-firing configuration and four 3-inch full-range drivers in a stereo 360º array presenting a 55-20kHz (+/-3dB) frequency response. All VGX speakers can be synced together for dedicated left and right stereo playback over Bluetooth with Qualcomm TrueWireless Stereo (TWS) technology.connecteddistribution.com

Parasound Z is a line of ultra-compact components with unique features to solve many of the common installation problems. They provide true high-end performance where space is tight and are a favourite for desktop listening.

The Zpre3 is a compact stereo preamplifier packed with custom integration features and the audiophile level of performance that Parasound is known for. There are five audio line level inputs including a front panel Aux input and a Bypass input and each input can be renamed to identify the connected source.

The Zamp v.3 is a two channel, single zone power amplifier. Its half rack and compact size makes it incredibly versatile – if there is only half the physical space available - the Zamp v.3 is the perfect option for audio zones (especially in a custom installation project) that require an upgrade in sonic dexterity – or simply the best audio performance.

The Zdac v.2 sounds more natural and less “digital” than DACs selling for far more because of its innovative design and high-quality parts. Its unique re-clocking system preserves the original source audio data by eliminating jitter contamination that is picked up along the digital signal chain. This is accomplished through the synergy of two premium parts, an Analog Devices AD1895 asynchronous sample rate converter and an AD1853 DAC IC. To further improve sound quality the signal is up-sampled to 422kHz. This highly effective jitter-reduction system works on all inputs, not just the USB input, as in many other DACs.connecteddistribution.com

Halo by Parasound, the premier product line, marks a new standard for sound and style. Every Halo model has earned an unprecedented number of rave reviews from the top critics in the audio / video industry.

The Halo JC5 distils the essence of the top-of-the-line Halo JC 1 monoblock power amplifiers into a single chassis. The design features a high power and ultra-high bias Class A/AB topography capable of delivering 400Watts per channel. High bias class A/AB provides 12Watts per channel pure class A power and class AB effortlessly to its 400Watts per channel 8-Ohm rating. It can deliver 600W per channel into 4-Ohms and can be bridged to mono for 1200Watts into 8-Ohms. The output stage employs 24 beta-matched, 15-ampere, 60MHz bipolar transistors to deliver a formidable peak current of 90-amperes.

The A51 multichannel amplifier is a power amplifier with huge presence and poise - befitting of its legendary designer John Curl. The A51 is a thoroughbred THX Ultra2 certified, high bias Class A/AB amplifier that gives you the optimal amount of performance that only most really high-end systems achieve, again nailing Parasound’s colours to the mast when it comes to that getting the maximum ‘bang for your buck’. Perfect for high-end cinema installs that need to sound the same as the systems used by the movie companies.

The Hint 6 integrated amplifier. When Parasound embarked on the Halo integrated amplifier project they had to re-think what a modern integrated amplifier should be. Guided by their 34 year reputation for delivering the most ‘bang for the buck’ in high end audio - they did just that! With its 1.1kVa transformer and dual-mono power supply at its heart, the new HINT 6 adds a Burr-Brown analogue resistor ladder volume control. It offers an updated USB input and DAC implementation, and a further improved phono stage with higher gain for lower output cartridges. New convenience features include dimmable display, volume level memory and an additional optical input.

The P6 pre-amplifier ensures that you can bridge the analogue and digital divide in these ever-changing multi-format days. On the digital platform - new technologies have changed the ways audiophiles connect to and enjoy their music. So, that’s why Parasound included a high-quality DAC in the P6 to widen your software playback options. The P6 features an ESS Sabre32 Reference DAC with USB, optical and coax inputs. The coax and optical accept all sampling rates up to 192kHz, 24-bit, whilst the USB input is capable of DSD & 384kHz/32-bit PCM. On the analogue stage, turntables are enjoying a resurgence, and again Parasound responded by including a genuinely great and adaptable phono stage to accommodate MM & MC cartridges with a choice of load impedances (phono input for MM & MC cartridges with 100-Ohm or 47k-Ohm load setting).connecteddistribution.com

Hand crafted in the heart of Europe, in Budapest, Hungary, the Heed Audio range is a line of distinct and unique audio products that embrace musicality over technical mumbo-jumbo and superfluous specifications. Their passion and drive for making truly musical and faithfully honest high-fidelity products, that engage and enthuse the listener is arguably unparalleled in the audio world today.

The Obelisk Si mk3 integrated amplifier builds upon the What Hi-Fi? Award-winning MKII. It refines and hones the endearing drive and qualities of this highly regarded integrated amplifier. It can be internally upgraded with a DAC 2.3 plug-in card (24bit/192 kHz) to cater for any digital source that supports a S/PDIF digital input. Alternatively, a Vinyl 1.0 card brings moving magnet compatibility to the Si.

The Elixir is an integrated Amplifier with MM Phono Stage & Class A Headphone Amplifier. This integrated amplifier puts down four important cornerstones that provide a playground for the listener: a preamplifier with its own dedicated output, a power amplifier with plenty of juice to drive anything reasonable, a phono preamplifier to re-discover those black discs, and a headphone amplifier with way too much talents to be a secondary function only.

The Abacus DAC provides the seductive Heed sound from a great variety of digital sources, even if the music is coded in extremely highly detailed PCM or DSD signal it will still sound ‘real’. The Abacus can handle

TRINNOVTrinnov’s advanced 3D audio technologies and unique high-channel count capability successfully reconcile the conflicting speaker placement requirements of Dolby Atmos, Auro-3D, and DTS:X. Trinnov’s Optimizer loudspeaker/room optimisation technology solves the loudspeaker/room acoustic equation for high-end Hi-Fi and home cinema. A key feature will be their award-winning Altitude 16 and AMP8M amplifier offering 16 channels encoded together with up to 16 channels of amplification. Trinnov’s other new offering is the Altitude48ext. Based on the Trinnov Magnitude32, the

The Vena II from Quad builds upon the strengths of its predecessor – compact design, a useful range of facilities and thoroughly engaging sound – by adding new features and enhancing sonic performance to form the beating heart of an affordable, high-performance audio system.

Beneath the hood, the Vena II sports significant upgrades. The digital audio circuitry has been improved, the Cirrus Logic DAC chip found in the original Vena replaced by an ES9018K2M from the Sabre32 Reference family. This enables the Vena II to benefit from ESS Technology’s 32-bit HyperStream architecture and Time Domain Jitter Eliminator to deliver ultra-low noise and high dynamic range. In terms of hi-res file

PCM signals up to 384 kHz and 32 bits, and natively processes the double speed DSD. Quartz based clocks and well-designed linear power supplies ensure that the resolution of digital processing is always perfect. The inputs consist of 5 + 1 digital inputs (1 x RCA coaxial S/PDIF input, 1 x BNC coaxial S/PDIF input, 2x Toslink optical input, 1x asynchronous USB input & 1x auxiliary input for future expansion cards).

The Orbit off-board turntable power supplies offer a sophisticated solution to the problem of speed accuracy and stability of many belt drive turntables driven by a synchronous motor. Both Orbit models give the added convenience of electronic speed change between 33 1/3- and 45-RPM via one single, elegant push-button in lieu of the rather fussy manual speed change arrangement of many turntables (removing the platter and shifting the belt on the motor pulley time and time again).connecteddistribution.com

compatibility, the original Vena maxed out at 24-bit/192kHz PCM via USB. The Vena II stretches this to 32-bit/384kHz, alongside DSD (up to DSD256).

Significant improvements have also been made to the Vena II’s analogue stages too. Sporting a Class AB power amp section that draws on Quad’s many decades of design experience, the power supply has been upgraded, a new 200VA toroidal transformer lying at its heart. This is followed by 2x 15000uF reservoir capacity (30000uF in total), helping the amp to maintain firm control of the music whilst enabling excellent dynamic range.

The original Vena was praised for its smooth yet bold and engaging sound quality; the Vena II retains this and adds greater resolution and refinement. Crisply defined detail reveals the character of voices and instruments, while impressive dynamic range conveys natural impact.

The Vena II is a neat and convenient way to bring true high-fidelity sound to the varied nature of modern music collections – from vinyl and CD to digital streaming and hi-res files. The Lancaster Grey finish has an RRP of £649, while the three premium finish options add £100 to the price tag.quad-hifi.co.uk

HEED AUDIO

Altitude48 ext provides 16 channels of AES/EBU input and up to 32 channels of analogue outputs, using the same state-of-the-art DACs used in the Altitude32. This ensures

Installed at a recommended height of five metres and with a 56°×44° field of view, a single camera guards a 29 metre section of the perimeter day and night! The best news of all: Dahua’s new heat-seeking sentinel is a sub £1K design in a market of £3-4K cameras!

DAHUA EPOE Dahua ePoe gives you plug-and-play IP video, audio, control and power over a single CAT 5 connection. For the surveillance of larger spaces involving widely dispersed camera locations, the conventional approach would be to add repeater devices to extend the transmission distance. However, this increases the cost of equipment installation and maintenance. Alternately, a fibre link could be deployed but this would require power at the camera side to power the fibre transceiver and the camera. Dahua’s ePoE IP system offers a very simple and effective solution supporting IP video, audio, control and power over a range of up to 800m via the traditional Cat5 Ethernet cable. A single cable connects the front-end and back-end devices for higher reliability and lower system installation and maintenance costs.

Dahua ePoe also offers easy analogue-to-IP migration over existing coax using the LR1002 extender. The LR002 connects to the Ethernet port of an IP camera or network switch and to coax BNC, supporting transmission up to 1km over RG59 coaxial cable at 10Mbit/s bandwidth, and delivering PoE power to the IP camera, significantly reducing the cost of analogue to IP migration.habitech.co.uk

The nuts, bolts and ingeniously advanced technologies of AV and CI perfection…

Custom Installation Nation

Invision has announced that, on the eve of the launch of their new Marquee Cinema Collection, Origin Acoustics has joined The CEDIA Designer’s global cloud-based design software and online database.

The CEDIA Designer (TCD) online database. Effective immediately, integrators using TCD can begin designing immersive audio home theatres and simpler media rooms – complete with full project documentation – using Origin Acoustics’ range of home cinema loudspeakers, subwoofers and amplifiers, in minutes.

Included within TCD’s substantial product database are Origin Acoustics’ recently debuted in-wall and on-wall Marquee Cinema Collection, the in-ceiling Director Collection, the Composer Collection (comprised of sleek in-wall, bezel-less frame loudspeakers), the full Architectural Subwoofer range, Powered Subs and associated amplifiers.

Crucially, using TCD allows integrators to confidently design technically perfect high channel count home theatres using the Origin Acoustics speakers and subwoofers available in the software’s database, eliminating the guesswork when it comes to speaker

placement. Using TCD is the only way home technology professionals can accurately design technically perfect high render channel count immersive audio home theatres in such a short space of time.

“As the only speaker manufacturer solely dedicated to architectural audio and with the imminent launch of our new range of Marquee dedicated theatre line, the time is right for us to join as TCD and Origin Acoustics are two young and successful companies,” said Jose Coelho, Director of International Business, Origin Acoustics.

Integrators are required to create a TCD account to start designing Origin Acoustics home cinemas and media rooms. CEDIA member dealers have free access to TCD’s Media Room software as a benefit of membership, and also receive substantial discounts on the other usage tiers.

SVI CASE STUDY – ELAN

After purchasing a 6000-square foot home just off a picturesque lake, these Michigan homeowners knew that they wanted to replace the existing home with a new modern estate that would enhance the unique lakefront location, both inside and out. To make their dreams a reality, they enlisted the help of Peter Cook, president of Automation Design + Entertainment, who worked with homebuilder Jeff Scheffers from Visser Construction, to design a lakefront oasis, with full control and automation from ELAN®.

“The homeowners levelled their previous traditional home to build an entirely new contemporary estate with a clear focus on outdoor lake living,” Cook explained. “Now, with the ELAN system in place, they have full control of the indoor and outdoor spaces of their home at their fingertips, truly bringing their lifestyle to a new level of relaxation.”

PERFECT 10To serve as the basis of the system, an ELAN gSC10 system controller was installed, to provide the homeowners with control over their home’s lighting, security, audio, and video. “Because the gSC10 system controller is so easy to configure, it was the perfect option for this install,” said Cook. “ELAN delivers a great user experience with a single point of control for everything, and it’s all accessible remotely through the ELAN mobile app on the homeowners’ mobile devices.”

Within the ultra-modern home, ELAN controls the security system, lighting, climate, audio and outdoor spaces. An ELAN Multi-Zone Audio Controller controls three Niles® SI-1230 power amps installed in the main equipment rack, and Sunfire® in-wall subwoofers installed in the upstairs media room.

A Lutron® RadioRA lighting system was configured with ELAN to control the home’s lights and shades. The two-story great room/kitchen is equipped with six 20’ Lutron roller shades that are controlled through the ELAN interface to rise to reveal a beautiful mountain range around the house.

ON THE WATERFRONTTo further enhance their lakefront experience, the backyard was completely redesigned to include fountains, a hot tub, fire pit, and a magnificent zero-entry pool with an arched bridge that invites guests to explore the grounds beyond. For easy operation, the pool and spa controls, perimeter cameras, door and gate intercom stations, fire pit, hot tub, landscape speakers, and in-ground subwoofers surrounding the pool and extending to the beach were all integrated with ELAN. Now, the homeowners can easily change the pool controls, turn up the volume on the speakers and check on the front gate when outside from the ELAN app on their smartphones or iPads.

With sound serving as an essential component of any outdoor space, a SpeakerCraft® in-ground subwoofer and SpeakerCraft Bass Power amp were installed in the outdoor greenscape leading from the pool to the lake, so that the sound in the backyard area would benefit from a rich bass experience.

WITH GREAT POWER…For overall power protection, a Panamax® M4315-PRO BlueBOLT-controllable power conditioner and a Panamax SM3-PRO system manager were installed to protect connected equipment from power surges and dangerous voltage conditions.

According to Cook: “The ELAN system has given these homeowners a new level of control that they never thought possible. Though they knew that the cosmetic redesign would highlight their lakefront location, they had no idea that the technology would be what really helps them to enhance their new lakefront lifestyle.”elanhomesystems.com

Never one to shy away from the tough questions, this issue PHIL HANSEN asks is this the end of the British High Street?

Along with his duties at the Clarity Alliance, Phil Hansen also runs Red Sheep, a successful marketing and PR consultancy operating within and outside the Hi-Fi industry.

CLARITY CALLSGiven the news at the moment, one could be forgiven for thinking that pretty soon every other shop in our towns is going to be boarded up. Estimates of the number of closures expected in 2019 suggest 23,000 stores are set to go, with a loss of 175,000 jobs. That’s a lot of jobs and a lot of empty stores across the country. According to The Observer: “During the first nine months of 2018 around 1000 retail businesses went into administration, the highest number in five years.” The list of major names that are in trouble is frightening: House of Fraser, Marks & Spencer, Debenhams, HMV, Patisserie Valerie and many more. And if that doom and gloom wasn’t bad enough, many others reported drops in sales over the crucial Christmas period, including Halfords, Mothercare and Sainsbury’s.

But it wasn’t all bad news – Morrisons said sales rose 3.6%. But there’s an irony in that, as the increase came from its wholesale division, which supplies Amazon!

So, how did we, a nation of shopkeepers, get into this situation? There’s no one answer to that of course and business analysts will all give you their different opinions. The BBC business unit has pulled together some reasons, interviewing people from the British Retail Consortium, KPMG and Mintel.

SQUEEZE ON PERSONAL INCOMEWhile the high street’s problems go back further than the Brexit vote, a significant event was the 15% drop in the value of the Pound against the Euro and Dollar when the result was announced. This made imported goods more expensive and those costs were inevitably passed on to consumers. The resultant rise in inflation squeezed incomes and, coupled with the weak wage growth, the amount of disposable income has shrunk.

OVERHEADS, RATES AND LANDLORDSRetailers are often at the mercy of their landlords and for many the cost of renting their shop has been increasing. And business rates are going up too, as cash-strapped local councils try to find new ways of raising revenue. The burden, as always, is ultimately passed on to the man or woman in the street – the ‘hardworking families’ – that our politicians are so keen to be seen supporting! According to the BRC, retailers will pay an additional £2bn over the next three years compared to the last three years.

THE RISE OF ONLINEThis one isn’t rocket science. We’ve seen it coming for years and while many have embraced it, online is still a pariah in the eyes of some. But with around

20% of all sales now being made online it’s the elephant in the room that no one can afford to ignore. It’s one of the major contributory factors in the decline of HMV.

WAY TOO MUCH DEBT Money is cheap to borrow when everything is going well, making expansion, shop refurbishment and advertising programmes affordable. But when the sales dry up, that debt becomes a burden. It can help finish a business off, as with the situation Toys R Us found itself in – a £15m VAT bill that it couldn’t afford to pay.

WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT?While there are some things that are just beyond the means of a small independent retailer, such as influencing government policy on business rates, or strengthening the value of the Pound, there are some practical steps such as:n John Lewis is reacting to online by running experience events in-store,

inviting its card holders to learn how to be a barista, how to voice control their home and to participate in ‘seated pilates’!

n Embrace online. There’s a commonality amongst the big-name shops that have gone out of business – they didn’t embrace online with anything like the focus they should have. Don’t abandon bricks and mortar, but use online as a tool to generate additional income.

n Make the process seamless. Online is simple – click ‘buy now’ and wait for the delivery to arrive the next day. In-store purchases have to be just as simple. If you haven’t got the stock you could lose the sale, as people are impatient and want it now.

n Differentiate the offering, so that your shop is an attractive place to visit. Fortune magazine wrote that 40% of Nike’s wholesale sales come from what it calls “differentiated” retailers, or stores that are inviting and present its products in a sophisticated way. They plan to get that 80% by 2022.

Training is key too. Getting the potential customers into the shop is one thing, but once they are there, getting the sale takes over as the most important focus. Clarity can help here – very soon we will be announcing a brand-new dedicated audio retail sales training course. Drop us a line to [email protected] if you’d like to know more.

This month, SVI’s investigator of installation, DAVE SLATER, puts the new Artison Backpack through its paces…

INSI E CIIf you look back to the days when Pioneer ruled the roost with its plasma screens, you’ll probably remember those speaker-out terminals that allowed you to feed better quality speakers, making getting improved TV audio straightforward. The majority of modern screens have lost this connection, so if you want better sound, you’ll need to wrestle with a variety of hardware options, many of which won’t suit the project at hand.

One elegant solution to consider is the Artison Nano Backpack P5. This doesn’t just provide superior TV audio but opens the door to a discrete surround sound system. This diminutive processor/amplifier could be the answer to many AV installation prayers. The unit is certainly tiny, measuring just 190 x 203 x 228mm (w/h/d), yet delivers 5:1 surround. Inside CI got its hands on one, to test out on a live install.

TESTING TIMESFor our evaluation, we attached the Aritison Backpack P5 to the rear of a Sony 55-inch OLED, using the supplied bracket that comes as an extra; however, it’s smart enough to sit on a shelf or AV furniture if that’s preferable. We then connected the amplifier to an Artison Studio soundbar, which has a custom-made speaker grille that cosmetically matches the TV.

I have to say that with the Artison in place, the minimalist Sony TV took on a slick look that reminded me of a B&O design – not too shabby at all. To deliver low-end bass, we added an Artison RCC Nano 1 subwoofer, and then took control of the system with a Control4 EA3. The entire process took no longer than five minutes; the menus are simple, with not many bells and whistles – perfect for this type of living room installation.

Connectivity is good – designed to accept most common AV sources sources, the Backpack P5’s array of inputs includes a trio of HDMIs, Bluetooth 4.0, digital optical audio, 3.5mm stereo minijack, and RJ-45 Ethernet.

PERFORMANCEDespite its small size, the P5 really has genuine punch, and coupled with the Artison speaker array delivered an amazing sound. Even though the amplifier is physically small it provides 100W per channel to front L/C/R speaker channels, and 50W to the LR/RR channels.

The high-performance processor/amp utilises five internal Class D amplifiers for the entire surround soundstage, using Continuous Sigma technology to give a Class A-level performance. There’s support for Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby ProLogic II/IIx decoding. It’s probably worth stressing that there’s no Dolby Atmos or DTS:X support, but then the P5 isn’t intended for a that level of home theatre install. If you’re outfitting a 5.1 media room, though, it’s perfect for the job.

Also included are internal 2.4/5.8GHz antennas for stable connectivity to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices. The HDMI output supports ARC and has 3D and 4k passthrough, which makes the Backpack P5 easy to integrate into a single-room system. The Backpack P5 uses a universal high-power internal switch mode power supply, and an IR remote control. It’s also IP-controllable via RJ-45/Wi-Fi. We’re told Control4 drivers will be available soon.

VERDICTSlick and convenient, we are really impressed by this little pocket rocket. It’s a great choice for a single room TV install: it has power, runs cool, and is super small. It’s also easy to control with your preferred control system.

The Backpack with Artison speaker package that we installed, was perfectly paired; the soundstage was crisp, with quality bass from the matching

subwoofer. With its compact form factor and punchy performance, we suspect the CI community is going to love the P5!

The Artison Backpack P5 processor amplifier is available from Redline and RGB communications, priced at £995 (plus vat).

A LIGHTER NOTELight specialist Rako’s new HUB features an all-new design and builds on the feature set of current Rako Ethernet bridges and Cloud Gateway. In addition to IP control for third party systems from Elan, RTI, Control4 and Savant, an astronomic time clock can be used to trigger Calendar-based events. There is also integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and GoogleHome. The unit also support audio control for Sonos and Systemline7.

The new desktop design means integrators now have the option to show the unit, or wall-mount out of view. The new HUB will be available in two versions, wireless or wired, the latter featuring a high speed RACOM RJ11 port.

The Artison P5 Backpack provides 100W per channel to front L/C/R

speaker channels, and 50W to the LR/RR channels

Infinity - class leading home cinema

Star ceiling panels. Lightweight

modular system. Easy installation

even in basements. Call Peter or

John to discuss your project. Our

Infinity star ceiling panels were

developed with the professional

home cinema installer in mind. The

lightweight modular panels with

100 star points per square metre are

illuminated by a distributed optical

harness using push-fit optical joints.

Magnets on the panels adhere to

resilient channel on the ceiling

making installation fast and

comfortable. Install a 4 x 3 metre

ceiling in 3 to 4 hours from scratch,

with no mess. Ideal for retrofit to

previous projects.

DMX light sources are available for

integration with leading home

automation systems.

The panels are easily cut to accept

ceiling-mounted speakers,

downlights and projectors. Call

Peter, John or David for an informal

chat or fast over-the-phone pricing.

Ask us also about fibre optic accent

and step lighting options.
