Safe Routes to School: Partnerships & Progress to Increase Physical Activity Among Youth

Why Safe Routes to School? 1969• 50% of children 5 to 14 years of age usually walked or bicycled to school • (National Center for Safe Routes to School, 2011).
• 41% of children in grades K–8 lived within one mile of school; *90% of these children usually walked or bicycled to school (U.S. Dept of Transportation, 1972).
Walk/Bike to School – 40 years later2009• 13% of children 5 to 14 years of age usually walked or bicycled to school
(National Center, 2011).
• 31% of children in grades K–8 lived within one mile of school;
*35% of these children usually walked or bicycled to school(National Center, 2011).
Education and Encouragementv Supporting 75 schools reaching over 20,000+ students!v International Walk to School Day on October 5th had 54
schools participate countywide.
Engineeringv SR2S Infrastructure Projects were completed at schools in
all 7 cities. Received ATP-2 Grant to improve infrastructure at 7 schools in Benicia and Vallejo.
Evaluationv Hand Tally Surveys – 19% of students walk to school in
Solano County (National Average is 13%).
Enforcementv Public Safety Grants (Round 3) with Rio Vista & Suisun
City Police Departments were awarded from 2016-2018.
Engagementv Developed a countywide SR2S Master Plan with each City
& School District through local SR2S Community Task Forces.
v High School Youth Engagement Pilot Program launched in 2017 with 7 high schools across Solano County

Bus Coordinators hired; Google Map Tool launched and Safe Routes to School Countywide Plan adoptedv 2014- 33 routes in 16 elementary schools; v2015 – ATP 1 Grant awarded - additional 15 schools
added; v 2016 – Implementation of WSB/Walking Programs
with more sustainable model (i.e. paid part-time staff). Currently 15 schools participating

With the new interactive tool parents/school volunteers can:
• Look up suggested Safe Routes to School
• See the Walking School Bus route(s) for schools across Solano County
• Find contact information for Walking School Bus Leader at each school
• Draw on the map online to show alternate routes when traveling to and from the school.
