Holiday Safety Tips

Personal Safety Tips With the holiday season fast approaching, we are le with many decisions and preparaons to make before packing our trailers and making our way to our holiday desnaons. Ensuring the security of family and property is a key priority at this me.

"Stascs clearly show that criminal acvity increases during the holiday season and it is therefore imperave for homeowners to take the right precauons and not let their guard down," says Richard McGhee, Sales and Markeng Director of ADT Security, one of South Africa's leading security companies.

Holiday Safety Tips

According to McGhee, there are several handy holiday safety ps to bear in mind which can help alleviate the risk to family and property. "The first and most important step to take is to ensure that your alarm is in working order. People tend to forget that an alarm system, like a car, has parts that age and wear out and therefore should be serviced at least once a year."

Spectacular insurance should also consider that in the event of a burglary, their insurance company will, in all likelihood, check whether they have properly maintained their alarm. "December is tradionally a busy period for security companies, so you should try and test your alarms at least three weeks before going on holiday.

Tesng should be done outside of peak hours (between 8am and 4pm or aer 8pm) and if a fault is discovered, it should be immediately reported to the security service provider's technical team." McGhee highlights that, due to increasingly high walls, electric fencing and other desperate measures that homeowners resort to in order to protect their property, the emergency reacons of armed response officers can be hindered.

He strongly suggests that homeowners check with their security service provider about alternate access opons available such as an EZI pad. The EZI pad, is an electronic device that is aached to the driveway gate, and allows the security officer access to the property once a secret code is acvated. Another important holiday safety p is to be discreet when preparing to go away. "People should park their cars behind closed doors, if possible in their garage. Homeowners should also never leave a message on their answering machine stang that they are out of town," advises McGhee.

Addional Personal Safety Tips For the Holidays

∙A dvise your security company if you are going away and ensure that you supply all the necessary informaon regarding nearby key holders, in case of an emergency.∙I nform your neighbours of your holiday plans so that they can keep an eye on your property.∙S top all newspaper deliveries and ask a friend or neighbour to collect your post. A bulging post box is a dead giveaway that you are not at home.∙I f hiring a house sier, ensure that you teach them how to use your alarm correctly.∙D ouble check that you have locked and secured all windows and doors before leaving home.∙E nsure that all your outside locks are a minimum of four lever locks or double cylinder security locks.∙N ever leave a key in the inside of an outer door which has glass panels or glass near the door lock.∙H aving security gates fied on outer doors is a highly effecve security measure that gives you an extra line of defence.∙S liding doors can be secured simply by placing a piece of mber cut to size in the sliding rail. Make sure that sliding doors cannot be lied vercally.∙F ull fencing and sturdy gates are a good deterrent.∙H ave good exterior lighng, preferably on a mer.∙D o not leave tools like ladders or spades outside, as they can be used to break into your house.∙C lear signage indicang that you have security also helps to discourage burglars.∙Thunderstorms, which are rampant in the summer months, can also wreak havoc on alarm systems. As a result of this, clients should regularly check their systems in case of lightning damage.

EATING TWO MEALS 6 HOURS APART

Improves the memory and intellectStrengthens the bones and preserves kidney funconIncreases energy and decreases stressHelps maintain an ideal weightDecreases cancer growth, heart disease, and diabetes

Not all health problems are avoidable, but you have more control over your health than you may think.

CANCER PREVENTION

What you eat—and don't eat—has a powerful effect on your health, including your risk of cancer. Without knowing it, you may be eang many foods that fuel cancer, while neglecng the powerful foods and nutrients that can protect you. For example, a daily serving of red or processed meat increases your risk of colorectal cancer by 21 percent, whereas eang whole soy foods such as tofu or edamame can help reduce your risk of breast cancer. Every 35 grams of dairy protein you consume each day can increase your risk of prostate cancer by 32 percent, while eang more fruits and vegetables can lower your risk for a variety of common cancers. By making small changes to your diet and behaviours, you can lower your risk of disease and possibly even stop cancer in its tracks.

CARELESSNESS

Any accident or injury is guaranteed to have an effect!

The myth:

There's nothing you

can do about slips and

trips and they don't

really hurt anyone

anyway.

The reality:

Most slips and trips

are preventable and

many happen when

spills aren't cleared up

or cluer died away.

Have you ever done anything stupid, something that you know puts you at increased risk of injury? When you realize how stupid you were, whether you got hurt or not, do you ask yourself, "Why did I ever do that?" For your own future preservaon, this should be a very important queson for you to answer yourself. Consider the fact that approximately 20% of injuries are due to unsafe condions and 80% are caused by unsafe acts. If you realize that most unsafe condions are brought about by human failure, then virtually all accidents are brought about by unsafe acts. Why did you do something in an unsafe manner? To answer this queson, you will need to put personal defences aside and know that blame may lie within yourself. Also realize that there may be more than one reason for your acons and others may be involved.

If you knew the proper, safe way to the do the job, then you cannot claim ignorance. What is le, whether you like it or not, is carelessness. So what can cause you to temporarily disregard your own safety?

External Pressure -- "Let's get this job done!" Usually this pressure comes from your direct supervisor. Disregarding safe pracces is not going to save enough me to make a significant difference. As a maer of fact, when the pressure is applied, it is worthwhile to pay more aenon to safety because we know, from experience, such situaons frequently lead to more accidents.

Bad Habits -- You fail to follow the established procedure and you don't get hurt (or you were not caught) this me. Psychologically, this is a reward and so you do it again and again and again. Do yourself a favour and follow the established procedures.

Internal Pressure -- There is just so much to do and not enough me!" Are you self-movated and self-directed? Think of it this way, you will not finish the job if you get hurt. You may finish the job if you don't get hurt. Therefore, first, prevent injury. Second, work to complete the job. Make sense?

Atude -- "This safety stuff doesn't apply to me!" So what makes you so special? Humans are humans. Rich or poor. Black or white. Men or women. Strong or weak. There is nothing in your status that will protect you from injury except following the safe procedure.

Remember, safety is no more than doing the job the right way, every day..

Ingredients

2 cups apple cider

1/3 cup real maple syrup

2 tablespoons chopped fresh thyme

2 tablespoons chopped fresh marjoram

2 1/2 teaspoons grated lemon zest

3/4 cup butter

salt and ground black pepper to taste

14 pound whole turkey, neck and giblets

2 cups chopped onion

1 cup chopped celery

1 cup coarsely chopped carrots

2 cups chicken stock

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme

1 bay leaf

2 tablespoons apple brandy (optional)

Description

A New England style turkey with maple syrup. It makes for a mellow Christmas dinner. Try stuffing it with Cranberry, Sausage and Apple Stuffing. If fresh marjoram is unavailable, 2 teaspoons of dried marjoram may be substituted.

Method

Boil apple cider and maple syrup in a heavy saucepan over medium-high heat until reduced to 1/2 cup (about 20 minutes). Remove from heat and mix in 1/2 of the thyme and marjoram and all of the lemon zest. Add the butter, and whisk until melted. Add salt and ground pepper to taste. Cover and refrigerate until cold (syrup can be made up to 2 days ahead).

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Place oven rack in the lowest third of oven.

Wash and dry turkey, and place in a large roasting pan. Slide hand under skin of the breast to loosen. Rub 1/2 cup of the maple butter mix under the breast skin. If planning on stuffing turkey, do so now. Rub 1/4 cup of the maple butter mixture over the outside of the turkey. With kitchen string, tie legs of turkey together loosely.

Arrange the chopped onion, chopped celery, and chopped carrot around the turkey in the roasting pan. If desired, the neck and giblets may be added to the vegetables. Sprinkle the remaining thyme and marjoram over the vegetables, and pour the chicken stock into the pan.

Roast turkey 30 minutes in the preheated oven. Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C), and cover turkey loosely with foil. Continue to roast, about 3 to 4 hours unstuffed or 4 to 5 hours stuffed, until the internal temperature of the thigh reaches 180 degrees F (80 degrees C) and stuffing reaches 165 degrees F (75 degrees C). Transfer turkey to a platter, and cover with foil. Reserve pan mixture for gravy. Allow turkey to sit about 25 minutes before removing stuffing and carving.

To Make Gravy: Strain pan juices into a measuring cup. Spoon fat from juices. Add enough chicken stock to make 3 cups. Transfer liquid to a heavy saucepan and bring to a boil. In a small bowl, mix reserved maple butter mixture with flour to form a paste, and whisk into the broth. Stir in thyme, bay leaf, and apple brandy. Boil until reduced and slightly thickened. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Tip;Aluminum foil can be used to keep food moist, cook it evenly, and make clean-up easier.

NASA budget bigger than expected*

NASA’s ambious plans for exploring space in the next decade and beyond will require money. Lots of it. The space agency is looking to get the cash train rolling in 2016 with a proposed federal budget allocaon represenng a more-than-$1.3 billion increase from this year’s spending levels.

The 2009-page omnibus spending bill announced Tuesday by House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), available to peruse on theHill.com, includes an allotment of $19.3 billion to NASA in fiscal 2016 or $700 million more than the Obama administraon requested earlier this year.

Sonys battery boosting by 40%

.In 1991, Sony introduced the first commercial lithium-ion baery. While it took a few years for the invenon to gather steam, lithium-ion technology is now the cornerstone of our enre baery industry. Now, the Japanese company wants to revoluonize the industry again, and claims it can boost exisng baery capacies by up to 40%, with commercial introducon slated for 2020.

That claim, however, does require an inial caveat. According to Nikkei, Sony wants to boost baery capability from 700Wh/L (lithium-ion) to 1,000Wh/L (lithium-sulfur). This claim does not seem to reflect the actual state of lithium-ion baery capacies in the real world, nor the vast majority of the charts and graphs that measure lithium-ion baery performance. With Sony targeng a 2020 introducon, it could sll be 2025 – 2030 before we actually see widespread adopon across the enre industry.

Try the knowledge-based Wolfram Language for free in your browser today

Stephen Wolfram introduced the knowledge-based Wolfram Language earlier this year. It extends the work he started with Mathemaca and Wolfram Alpha to let people solve problems at an extremely abstracted level that lets them connect knowledge directly with programming. The Wolfram Language was also made available for free to those who bought the $35 Raspberry Pi computer. Now there’s Wolfram Open Cloud, announced and made available earlier this week; it makes the language even easier to access and try.

All you need is a browser and the willingness to create a free Wolfram account. If you’ve already got an account, you can use it to access the Wolfram Open Cloud. Once you login, you can use the prebuilt ThingsToTry notebook to learn how the service works by following the text instrucons and sample code in it. Pressing Shi-Enter at the end of a code sample runs the code. Simple code such as, literally, “2 + 2″ produces results nearly instantly.

Other, more complex code, such as for generang 3D graphics, may take a few seconds or more before a result is displayed.

If you have a soware development background, head over to The Wolfram Language: FAST INTRODUCTION FOR PROGRAMMERS. The sidebar on the le gives you a quick overview of the categories of topics, ranging from the basics of its 5,000 built-in funcons to 3D graphics and how to use its natural language input.

Note, however, it looks like some of the language is either not available when using a free account or may not work the way it is described. For example, trying to use the external connecon to the Facebook API

SocialMediaData[“Facebook”,“FriendNetwork”]resulted in this error message:“SocialMediaData::cloudf : SocialMediaData is not currently supported in Wolfram Cloud.”

Tesng the natural language interpreter using the test phrase “= picture of dog” (a variaon of the example Wolfram gives of “= picture of a wolf”) results in an array lisng every dog breed name, instead of displaying the expected generic dog photo or drawing.

Philips Hue, introduces lightbulb DRM*

.Philips Hue is a smart light system that’s designed to allow users to create their own lighng “scenes” using pricey bulbs that interface with smartphone apps on iOS and Android.

Philips uses the Zigbee protocol for communicaon between the Hue bulbs and the network bridge staon, which means that Hue should support third-party bulbs. Up unl recently, it has. Now, however, Philips has deployed an updated firmware that locks out third-party devices that haven’t already been qualified under its new Friends of Hue program.

Star Citizen $100 million - Alpha 2.0*

Star Cizen fans got a major update this weekend, as developer Cloud Imperium Games announced that a long-awaited Alpha 2.0 build was finally available. Oh, and the game — already the largest crowd-funded tle in history — has now raised over $100 million dollars.

The new Alpha 2.0 module includes a number of features. The alpha allows exploraon of gas giants and its three moons, with areas for PVP combat, ruins to explore, and refueling /re-arming staons for those who want to head into dogfighng. The new alpha also allows for first-person combat on various Comm Arrays around the giant Crusader.
