Continuous Steam Circulation or Cyclic Steam Stimulation
SAGD Pressure &Distributed Temperature
Thermocouples can be pulled through coiled tubing and installed in the wellbore. Systems can also be suspended inside open hole/cased hole application.

SAGD - The Important Role of Downhole Distributed Temperature and Pressure InstrumentationDISTRIBUTED TEMPERATURE—The primary objective of steaming is to improve the viscosity of the bitumen so that artificial lift is feasible. Whether a Continuous or Cyclic Steam approach is used it is critical to measure the horizontal wellbore temperature profile at several points / distances to ensure drainage conditions are prime throughout the wellbore.
Typical downhole temperatures range from 235°C to 350°C. Three are three predominant sensor technologies for measuring distributed temperature:
Technology Pro’s Con’s
Fibre Optics • Best Data Accuracy.• Complete temperature
distribution profile.• Acoustic applications.
• Limited life span due to Hydrogen darkening.
• More expensive.
Thermocouple • The Best Long Term Durability.
• Cost Effective. Two measurements points per instrumentation line.
• Moderate accuracy.
Digital RTD • Good Accuracy. • Below average life span.• Four conductors required
for accuracy.
Perm Services specializes in designing, manufacturing, and installing thermocouple bundles and partners with other leading technology companies for Fibre Optic deployments. Many solutions are deployed with coiled tubing strings.
SAGD PRESSURE - Measuring wellbore pressure at temperatures between 235°C to 350°C is challenging yet very important for SAGD operations. Benefits include:
Measuring real time wellbore fluid levels. Automated pump control through VFD.
Measuring and abiding to ERCB regulations.
Preventing reservoir fracture.
There are several technologies for measuring downhole pressure in a SAGD environment.
Technology Price Temp Rating
Pro’s Con’s
Quartz Pressure Sensors
$$$$$ 225° Most accurate pressure technology. Expensive & lacking long term reliability.
Piezometers (Vibrating Wire)
$ 250° Cost effective. Measures both pressure and temperature.
Repeatability wains over time, especially with multiple pull and re-runs.
Bubble Tube (Nitrogen Injection)
$$ 500°C Best reliability. Modest price. Requires surface pressure tank maintenance program.
