To the Editor

I came across an interesting article on Math theother day. The writer highlighted the negative con-notation so prevalent in the attitude of 'formermath students'. The author came to the conclu-sion that we make the learning experience positiveso the long term attitudes to math will be rid ofantagonism.

Now golf is a very hard game and mastering itcompletely will never occur. Mathematics is muchthe same; infinite time would not guarantee thatthe finest student would ever understand all thatcould be known about it. Math learning is essen-tially a progression of skills to be learned and thenbuilt on at the next level. Successful initial learningshould increase the likelihood of long term successso why the feedback as mentioned in the first para-graph? Golf instruction is essentially the same;skill-based learning broken down into various'strands' of knowledge. Acquire the skills and mas-ter the game. Yet the average player is not any bet-ter then they were 80 years ago when theinstruction was almost non existent.

The comparison is interesting; the contrast is re-markable. While we focus on testing the learningof one area in math at a time, the 'test' of golf in-volves the act of playing which means that all areasare part of the challenge. Many golfers will tell youthat they were successful in one area and not so inanother, i.e., ' I drove the ball well today but Icould not buy a putt'. Always, the person beginswith the positive and then accepts the area needingmore attention. Golf seems to have developed aholistic approach that allows a person to believethat despite his current failures, the opportunityfor success will be just around the corner. Manypeople create their own successes by changing theirgoal or 'par' to create an atmosphere where theycan be successful.

High school math courses that focused on inter-esting and challenging problem- solving opportu-nities and encompassed all the areas ofmathematics would be an excellent opportunity tochange the adult attitude to mathematics.

Yours faithfully

Terence Ryan

Dear Terence

What an interesting comparison and how true it would seem. Accentuating the positive is al-ways a good thing and if we could encourage students to look at not only math but all sub-

jects in the manner that you mention then I can only see that being a good thing.Remember though that we strive to always break ‘par’! And that par for a course is set

and can not be changed.

He sank a three-footer forbirdie on the 18th – aftermissing one of similar lengthin regulation play on thesame hole – and then de-feated Ernie Els and RetiefGoosen, two icons of SouthAfrican golf, as he becamejust the sixth player to wintheir first two European Tourevents in back-to-back-tournaments. And there was thesmall matter of beating two boy-hood idols, too. “Just standingon the tee with Ernie and Retiefwas unbelievable on the play-off,” he said. There was a calmabout me, the whole playoffhole actually. I think I was morenervous and more pumped upgoing down the last hole when Iwalked up the fairway.”

Even though he wasn’t able topull off his victory in regulation,he was aware of what he eventu-ally achieved.

“I’ve beaten Ernie and Retief ina playoff,” said Grace of his vic-tory, “and I know that I can doit again.”

The win also catapulted himinto the ranks of golf ’s elite as hewill move inside the top 100 in

the Official World Golf Rank-ings when they are released afterthe weekend’s action is over. That’s a huge climb from his258th spot before he won lastweek’s Joburg Open.

He started his final round sounimpressively, too: With adouble-bogey on the third and abogey to follow that up, itseemed as if his chances of win-ning – so good when he led byfour at halfway – had evaporatedas Els, Goosen, CharlSchwartzel and Belgian NicolasColsaerts all made attempts towrest the trophy from their op-ponents. But, in an exhibitionof his new-found imperturbabil-ity, he birdied six and nineahead of the turn, and then 12,13 and 16 on his way in. Aftermissing his birdie attempt on 18

in regulation play it was downthe 18th fairway for a secondtime in the final round. “I hadsaid to my caddie Zac [Rasego]when we walked up the firsttime that I didn’t want to haveto climb the hills again,” he said.

But the 23-year-old set out forthat second journey with Els,42, and Goosen, 43, giving twoof the greatest players SouthAfrica has produced nearly 20years in experience as well as age– and he played the hole muchbetter than either of them.

The enormity of the victorywon’t sink in immediately, muchas his win in Johannesburgdidn’t. “I think I’ve just beenrunning on emotion. I’ll keepplaying and playing until I’m ex-hausted and until I find it’s timeto take a break.”

Jbe ecstatic with Indian win

HEALTH & LIFESTYLE

www.sagolftrader.co.za March/April 201214

As he headed down the 18th the 25-year-old held a two-stroke lead over playing partner Marcel Siem, but Kruger overcame the nerves to claim the €2-million tournament at DLF Golf and CC.

“I’m very relieved to win for the first time,” said Kruger. “If you want to win you need to make puttson the final day and I did that today.”

“It’s a big relief now that I’ve won but I think I needed all those second-placed finishes to be able to ap-preciate it. There was no pressure even when I made my only bogey of the day on the 17th,” said Kruger,“I felt that victory was inevitable when I got to the 14th hole. I knew that I had a good chance as I hada comfortable three-shot cushion then. I like to know what’s going on and I’m aware of the movementson the leaderboard.”

The Bloemfontein local is yet to win in South Africa – his two Sunshine Tour victories were in Zambiaand Zimbabwe – and the Indian win marks his third professional trophy outside of local borders.

He finished fourth on the Asian Tour Order of Merit last year and learnt to deal with the travel betweenSouth Africa and the East, which clearly paid off in India. On the third day he shot a superb 66 to leadthe field by one stroke as they headed into the final 18.

Siem had a sniff at victory when Kruger’s second on 18 found trees to the left of the fairway, but theGerman put too much into the shot and it landed in a greenside bunker, relieving much pressure fromKruger.

It was his first win in 38 appearances on the European Tour and, aside from the cheque, has given Krugersomething very special – a winner’s confidence.

Jbe Kruger pumped his fist as the final putt dropped at the Avantha Masters in India –after many close calls he had finally gotten the monkey off his back – he had won his

first European Tour event.

We were told that something special awaited us 60km out of Nelspruit on the Schoemanskloof road.So in great anticipation we left Nelspruit and after a half hours drive found the gravel road to theright and cautiously made our way 7km onto the top of the escarpment where we came upon Draken-zicht Mountain Links. The overwhelming beauty of the surroundings takes a while to comprehendand when you see the golf course blending into this landscape it is really impressive. When I steppedout of the car I felt a pleasing sense of solitude. We were then warmly greeted by course architectand developer Thys van den Hoven and his wife Marcelle. It was by now late afternoon so we jumpedon a cart and Thys took us around the course, both Louis and I marvelling at how Thys has virtuallysingle handedly built this course. But a “mountain links” where did that come from? Well back atthe clubhouse over dinner and a glass or two of wine Thys gave us the background to this fascinatingproject.

The 160ha farm on the Drakensberg Escarpment overlooking the Schoemanskloof valley was boughtin February 2007. At the time sheep were kept on the property, but the presence of baboons, type ofgraze available and illnesses proved sheep farming not to be a sustainable option. The process of rezoningthe farm from agriculture to business and tourism resulted in some environmental adjustments beingmade. All alien and invasive plants had to be removed. Large areas were covered with black wattle andblue gum trees and through a tedious process these trees were cut down and chopped up to supply thelodge with firewood. Areas infested with bug weeds, lantana, bramble and bracken ferns were cleared. This left huge areas that now needed rehabilitation. Together with the borrow pits and totally overgrazedsheep camps a big threat of erosion and re-infestation with alien invasive plants now existed.

The idea of using these areas to establish some recreation on the lodge to make it sustainable over along term came to the fore and was the first step in the establishment of a unique golf course.

The natural landscape was kept as it is: areas of unspoilt grasslands, few to no trees and a misty, windyclimate reminiscent to that of the Scottish coastline ... and hence the criteria of the links courses ofScotland were used to design the course. Almost no major earthworks were done. More than 95% ofthe course design was in the previously disturbed areas. Pot bunkers were also used where possible mainlyto prevent the sand from blowing out of the bunkers. However Thys was well aware of the fact that thiscouldn’t be a true links course as it is 1400m above sea level. Thus the idea to label this as the firstMountain Links course in the world!

With extraordinary views across the valley pictures do not do it full justice. The course is situated onthe top of a mountain with the highest point on the course a full 120m higher above sea level than thelowest point. The signature hole with its drive across a gorge is a very testing 421m par 4 and a truestroke 1. Your tee shot on the 18th may well be the one with the most spectacular view.

The old farmhouse was used to create a truly historical feel tothe clubhouse (similar to those of the links courses). The 5self-catering chalets and lodge can sleep up to 22 peoplepresently with plans to add 25 more units on the estate. Ad-joining land has just been incorporated and the estate is now250 hectares in size. Other facilities include tilapia fishing, mountain bike and walking paths with great 360 degreeviews and a swimming pool.

We left early the next morning after a great nights rest anda delicious breakfast. The gravel road to Drakenzicht is quiterough so allow for some extra time but don’t let this deteryou as this is a unique and rewarding golfing experience!

The entire course can be seen from here and you have a fan-tastic view over the valley. The course totals a distance of6120m par 71 and is a true test of golfing ability and coursemanagement. The course is a great mix of short, mediumand long holes. Three of the par 4's could well be par 5's.Although only 9 holes, the front and back nine differ con-siderably in distance and angles to give the challenge of atrue 18 hole championship course. All things being equala player will probably use all his clubs during a round.

Thys is to date the only player to record a sub 80 roundon the course and invites all keen golfers to extend thislist.

The Kruger Lowveld region of Mpumalanga is anancient landscape framed by what is likely theoldest mountain range on Earth, preserving someof life’s earliest forms. One glance down from therugged Klein Drakensberg Escarpment allows oneto understand why the Panorma Route is socalled.

The mountain cliffs and those of the Blyde RiverCanyon plunge down, laden with waterfalls, intolush indigenous forest where the iconic Kruger Na-tional Park and private game reserves make the re-gion one of Africa’s signature wildlife destinations.

Apart from breathtaking natural icons, this is alsoa place of historical and cultural significance. IronAge trade routes and African traditions reach backacross many centuries. Gold rushes at Pilgrims Restand Barberton were precursors to the discovery ofgold in Johannesburg. Steeped in the history of tra-ditional cultures, pioneers and fortune seekers, vis-itors will encounter a contemporary Lowveldculture with a wealth of stories that inspire thesenses and connect one to the land and its people.

White River Country Club recently suffered badly from the flooding in the area with twoof the three bridges on the course being washed away. Through tremendous effort bythe greens staff the course took just seven days to return to its normal outstanding con-dition, with temporary bridges in place.

This work was completed justprior to the start of the highly suc-cessful annual White River LadiesClassic which saw 120 ladies en-joying three days of golf and festiv-ities. The course will be inoutstanding condition for the up-coming Duke of EdinburghChampionship on 30thMarch andthe Big Five Easter Tournament tobe held from 4th to 8thApril 2012.This year the club is highlightingthe Rhino in order to raise aware-ness of the plight of the Rhinopopulation and the ongoingpoaching in the area, particularlythe Kruger National Park.

Visitors to the Lowveld should ensure they do not miss the opportunity to play on this “must play”course. A long week-end away from the city with one or two games of golf at this wonderful course, with an outstanding welcoming country atmosphere, should surly be a priority.

Leopard Creek has grown out of the vi-sion of a banker and skills and expert-ise of one of the world’s great golfers. It is founded on the values of friend-ship, a common love of the game of

golf and a shared reverence for nature. Drawingfrom the intricate wealth of nature, Leopard Creekis an unobtrusive part of that environment –blending, complementing and enhancing. Situatednear Malelane in the heart of Mpumalanga, on thesouthern border of the Kruger National Park. The360 hectare development is bordered to the northand the west by the picturesque Crocodile Riverand the Kruger National Park. Typical bushveldkoppies overlook the course from the east, provid-ing an ideal backdrop for a magnificent course. In-novative architectural and landscaping techniquesensure that the Leopard Creek golf course and liv-ing areas are naturally protected from animals,

while lakes and small streams have been divertedthrough the development to create scenic vistasand interesting golf strategies. Golfing hazards takeon a new dimension at Leopard Creek, for muchof the water is home to the magnificent creaturesfor which the river is named, crocodiles. Extensiveuse has been made of water features and sightingsof crocodile, hippo, antelope, buffalo and wildboar are commonplace, either on the course itselfor in or next to the river running alongside severalholes. The 505 meter par-five 13th is one of Leop-ard Creek’s most memorable holes. Here the greenis right on the edge of the Crocodile River but 32meters above the level of the water, offering mag-nificent views up the river and into the KrugerPark. Gary Player is especially proud of the par-five 18th with its island green and the par-four 9thwith its peninsula green jutting out of the samebody of water.

Golf participationin Europe 2011

While golf is not considered a bellwether for economic conditions in Europe, there is little doubt of

the cause-and-effect link between the economy and the success of golf as a participation sport. The

number of golfers in Europe has more than doubled in the past 25 years, buoyed by economic growth

and the spread of the game to both developed and emerging economies. However, in 2011, European

golf experienced its first fall in participation in more than two decades. Which countries lost golfers

in 2011, and why? Which countries enjoyed golfing growth? This snapshot report of golf participation

in Europe will provide an insight into recent trends across the region, based on available statistics.

Headline facts

• After more than 20 years of growth,Europe’s golf market experienced thefirst decline in golf participation, witha net loss of 46,000 registered playersin 2011.

• Nine countries experienced a decline inthe number of registered golfers, butthe most significant falls were in threelarge golf markets: UK & Ireland -42,700 (-3.1%), where the number ofgolfers has been falling since 2007,Sweden -21,000 (-4.1%) and Spain -9,700 (-2.9%).

• Some countries have counterbalancedEurope’s overall decline in golf partici-pation: Germany +10,800 (1.8%), theNetherlands +7,600 (2.2%), Finland+4,600 (3.6%) and Eastern Europe’smost established golf market, theCzech Republic +3,500 (7.6%).

• Despite their potential, the growth indemand for golf in Eastern Europeancountries was insignificant, in absoluteterms, in 2011.

• German-speaking countries1 and theNetherlands, remain flagship marketsfor female participation, with morethan 30% of players being women. Female participation is also high in

Development of golf participation inEuropeAt the end of 2011, there were a total of 6,740 golf coursesand nearly 4.4 million registered players in Europe, result-ing in an average participation rate of 0.73% (based on atotal population of 600 million)2.

Following dynamic growth (6% per year) since the 1980’s,and a modest increase (1-2%) in the last five years, Eu-rope’s golf market entered a downturn in 2011. While thenumber of golf courses has remained stagnant, participa-tion in the game started to decrease, resulting in a net lossof 46,000 registered golfers last year.

It is generally believed that the stagnation of Europe’s golfmarket can be attributed to two principal factors:

• Significant decrease in registered golfers in some of Eu-rope’s largest golf markets, notably the UK & Ireland;

• Lack of dynamic growth in Europe’s emerging markets(e.g. Eastern Europe and the South-East Mediterranean).

It should be highlighted however that in the UK & Irelandgolfers do not need to be registered to play, and, as such, the reduction of registered players could be attributed tocancellations of club memberships. Many of these so-called “casual golfers” continue to play the game on agreen-fee (daily pay-and-play fee) basis, on which therearen’t any accurate statistics available.

As such, although the significant drop in registered golfersis a clear indication of decreasing demand, it is harder tomeasure the impact on the number of rounds.

Page 43: SAGT March/April 2012

Supply and demand characteristics in 2011The golf market in Europe remains con-centrated, with 92% of all golfers and90% of courses focused in only 10 coun-tries. The UK & Ireland alone have thehighest share of demand in Europe with30% of players and the highest share ofsupply with 44% of courses.

The following maps indicate the maturityof Europe’s golf markets, according to thesize of population per golf course, and theproportion of the population playing golf.

In recent years golf supply and demand has been relativelystable in most European countries, resulting in little changein market maturity. The UK and Ireland remain Europe’smost mature markets, along with the Nordic countries. Infact, Sweden, Iceland, Denmark, Finland and Norway havethe highest participation rates in Europe, paralleled with astrong supply relative to the population size.

these countries in absolute terms, pro-viding a total of 430,000 womengolfers (40% of the total in Europe).

• Some emerging markets encourage golfparticipation through junior pro-grammes, which is reflected in the no-tably high share of junior golfers insome countries (e.g. Turkey, Serbia,Greece). While in absolute terms thisrepresents only a few thousand youngplayers, this is a potentially importantfactor in the future development of thegame in these countries.

• No countries experienced a significantgrowth ingolf supply, but some newcourses opened in Germany, theNetherlands, the Czech Republic andPoland, for example.

Although the composition of golferschanged in some countries in 2011, malegolfers continue to dominate Europe’s golfmarket, representing approximately 65% ofall players. Women and junior golfers makeup 25% and 10% of the total, respectively.

While total female registrations have beendecreasing across Europe in 2011 by about2%, Germany, Switzerland, Finland andthe Czech Republic managed to notably in-crease the number of their female golfers –Germany by more than 5,700, and the lat-ter three by 1,000-1,400 each.

German-speaking countries and theNetherlands remain the flagship marketsfor female participation, with more than30% of their players being women. SPECIAL FEATURE – GHOLFBANE: GROEN OASIS OF GROEN WOESTYN

Hoȅ heinings, permanente seku-riteitswagte, ens is alledaagse veskynsels.

hierdie geval uitstekend geslaag.

UK drought highlightswater usage

An emergency ‘Drought Summit’, called thisweek by the government’s land resourcesagency, Defra, has highlighted the perilousstate of the UK’s water reserves.

Large parts of England are already experiencingdrought conditions, with forecasters warningthat it is likely to continue into the summer.

For turf managers in much of England, espe-cially the south, there is the very real prospect ofwater restrictions on irrigation resources. Manygolf courses have already had restrictions im-posed on existing abstraction licenses that wouldnormally now be filling reservoirs ready for thesummer.

Water companies in affected areas are now ex-pected to file for emergency drought orders anddrought permits that will impose further restric-tions on water use.

• The two major U.S.monthly magazines GolfDigest and Golf Magazine have the strongestreadership among printed publications; how-ever, they are read less frequently than theywere one year ago.

• Although it remains in its infancy, digital de-livery of golf information is the fastest grow-ing method of distribution.

• Facebook is the most widely used social net-working tool by serious golfers, with 30%saying they visit daily and 49% reporting they visit at least weekly. Findings reveal social media consumption is skewed towardsyounger golfers.

• 82% of respondents watch the Golf Channelat least once a week, and golfchannel.comleads PGAtour.com, golfdigest.com andgolf.com as the most popular golf websites.

It’s one of the most talked about subjects on so-cial media, and the general consensus is thatit’s best for everyone.

But more importantly, it’s good for local commu-nities and for the environment.

“The concept is actually quite easy,” said MosselBay Tourism’s Marcia Holm. “Responsible tourismis defined as ‘tourism that creates better places forpeople to live and better places to visit.’”

According to Bertu Nel, the manager of golf atMossel Bay’s Pinnacle Point, it’s a principle that’svery close to the hearts of the members of the Pin-nacle Point Beach and Golf Resort’s Homeowner’sAssociation.

“It’s important for us to have good relations withthe people of Mossel Bay, and with visitors to thetown - especially since the golf course is also thefocal point of the Mossel Bay Archaeology Project, which has discovered the earliest evidence formodern human behaviour right here in the cavesin the cliffs under the course.

“The Archaeology has reignited interest in thebeautiful St Blaize Trail, which follows a contourpath along the cliffs, and takes walkers from CapeSt Blaize to Dana Bay - and since the club house

is the only refreshment station along the way, we’redelighted to be able to offer them the use of ourfacilities, restaurant and bar.

“As every golfer knows, walking is the best way todiscover an area, and the St Blaize Trail surely livesup to that expectation since the fynbos at PinnaclePoint is in absolutely pristine condition, and theproperty offers brilliant opportunities for seeingwhales, dolphins and birds like the rare Africanblack oystercatcher in the marine environmentthat borders the estate.

“With the course in beautiful condition at thistime of year, and the whale season (which coin-cides with the best flowering time for the fynbos)fast approaching - isn’t it time you played PinnaclePoint?” asked Mr. Nel.

General Manager of the Homeowner’s Associa-tion, Carl van der Linde, said that the Association(a Section 21, not-for profit organisation) recentlytook ownership of the golf club, the course, theclubhouse, and related facilities, and that non-members are welcome to play whenever slots areavailable.

What’s next for golf in Europe?

www.sagolftrader.co.za March/April 201262

S P E C I A L R E P O R T

While we expect 2012 to remain a toughyear for Europe’s golf market, a recov-ery in the Eurozone and an overall up-

swing in the world economy would play animportant part in the uptake of golf by new andreturning players. However, the timing and natureof such a recovery is obviously difficult to forecast.

Some of the countries where golf continued togrow in 2011 – notably, Germany and Finland –have benefited from relatively resilient economies, given the scale of the economic downturn acrossEurope, and enduring uncertainties. These coun-tries remain well positioned to see a growth in bothnumbers of players and, to a lesser extent, courses.

Where golf had previously been tipped to grow sig-nificantly was the emerging markets of Central andEastern Europe (CEE). Despite the Czech Repub-lic’s impressive growth figures (7.6% increase inthe number of players to nearly 50,000, and sevennew courses), demand and course development hasslowed down across the region.

However, based on our survey of industry experts, expectations for the CEE – as well as the Mediter-ranean region – remain high, following a recoveryfrom the economic downturn. Once again, thetiming is hard to predict.

There is no doubt the apparent drop-off in thenumber of registered golfers in Europe’s largest golfmarket, the UK and Ireland, was significant in2011, and follows an ongoing trend. However, itis difficult to determine how much of this is as aresult of golfers giving up club memberships infavour of playing golf on a casual or daily fee basis,or giving up the sport altogether. (Unlike otherEuropean countries, golfers in the UK and Irelanddon’t have to be registered.)

There are several initiatives aiming to offset thisnegative trend. For example, the Over 45’s Projectis a local scheme that has been running in conjunc-tion with England Golf to involve people agedover 45 as part of a fitness and social concept. Sig-nificant funds have been allocated for this initiativebetween 2009 and 2013.

A future project set to be rolled out in 2012 is anew concept with the English Golf Partnership en-couraging adults to start playing quick, social golfwith rounds lasting no longer than 60 minutes. While these are all positive examples, the lack ofproper promotion often hinders the success ofsuch initiatives.

In Wales, the Ryder Cup Legacy has put significanteffort into growing the youth game, which sawpeaks in 2008. But, just two years after the RyderCup, there is a call for continued support and in-vestment in fresh and new initiatives to turnaround the recent reduction of junior players.

While much of the golf market stagnation in Eu-rope may be attributed to the overall economic cli-mate, continued support and investment in newprogrammes will be needed to sustain demand andgenerate further growth in the game, especially inmature and developed golf markets.

Golf clubs need to proactively and effectively faceup to the challenging economic climate to retainmembers or attract new golfers. Based on our sur-vey, rather than introducing youth and family pro-motional programmes, 30-40% of Europe’soperators and club managers actually increasedprices in 2011. On the other hand, more than halfof clubs have not enhanced marketing efforts –and (somewhat surprisingly) many have not yetcapitalised on the opportunities provided by on-line marketing and social media.

Today, there is a need for joint efforts by industrystakeholders – arguably more so now than at anytime in the past two decades. Therefore, whateveraspect of the industry you represent, we invite youto share your thoughts, best practices and creativeideas on www.golfbusinesscommunity.com.

The 17-year-old surrendered athree shot lead to the Italian aftera bogey at the 12th and a doubleat the 13th – his Achilles Heelthrough four rounds. But Porte-ous showed incredible resilienceto reel off two birdies in his finalfour holes and win one of themost prestigious titles on the am-ateur circuit. His winning scorewas eight-under-par 280, onestroke better than the Italian, who closed with a 74.

“Words can’t explain how I feel,”said the emotional winner, whodedicated the victory to his goodfriend and 2011 winner, JaredHarvey. “My body is shaking andI don’t know if I want to laugh orcry. This has just been one ofmost unbelievable moments ofmy life. You don’t really knowwhat to do, except smile. AfterJared won last year, he challengedme and I swore I would win thisfor him.

“I can’t wait to get him on thephone to tell him I pulled it off.”

Porteous, playing with Bolognesiand Musi Nethunzwi in the finalgroup, began his title charge oneshot behind the Italian and oneahead of a chasing pack includ-ing Nethunzwi, Brandon Stone,Desne van den Bergh, as well asToby Tree from England. Afterseven steady pars, he birdied theeighth and hit the front, puttingthree shots between himself andBolognesi, Van den Bergh andFilippo Bergamaschi of Italy.

“I watched Musi hit it in thewater on 12, so I went right andended up under the trees,” hesaid. “I had to chip out andended up making a bogey and itwas a two-shot swing whenBolognesi birdied the hole. He isan incredible competitor underpressure and I knew I would haveto birdie 13 to catch up to him.”But the 13th has been a problemfor Porteous all week.

“I haven’t been able to make any-thing happen at that hole. I hadno confidence standing on thetee. It was probably the mostconservative that I’ve played thehole all week. “But I found thewater yet again. That was thethird successive time this week.Double bogey, five over for thathole this week; it’s just not right.I told Mike, the head green-keeper, they should dig up thathole and make it a par three.”The country’s number two ama-teur knew he would have tomake a few birdies coming hometo put pressure on the Italian.

He delivered the shot of the tour-nament at the par-five 15th,where he pulled off a magnificentflop shot to match Bolognesi’sbirdie.

“That was the best flop shot ofmy life,” said Porteous. “I was 30metres out with no green to workwith but it came out perfectlyand finished about three footfrom the hole. At the par-three,the 17th, I knew I had to sink aneight-footer when Bolognesi bo-geyed and I drilled it in.

“I went into the 18th with a lotof hope. I hit my tee shot exactlywhere I wanted to, just to theright of the middle of the fairway. That put the pressure I needed onBolognesi. The Italian pushed hisapproach over the pin, leavinghimself with a 20-foot downhillputt which he rolled six foot past.

“Mine was below the pin, about20-feet and I hit the lip androlled to about a foot and a half.I knew he would have a toughsecond putt, All I could do waswait to see what Bolognesi woulddo and when he missed the puttby a couple of feet, I knew I onlyhad the tap in to win.

“I was so relieved when that puttdropped, I didn’t know what todo for about 10 second. I have tosay, though, I feel a bit sorry forBolognesi – he’s a solid golfer andit would have been a really goodplay-off had he parred the last.”

Despite coming under intense pressure from Italy’s Andrea Bolognesi, South Africa’s Haydn

This exercise will improve the strength of your lower leg sta-bilizer muscles, resulting in greater ability to transfer weightfrom one leg to the other in your golf swing.

1. Stand, balancing on one leg.

2. Go down into a mini Squat.

3. As you come back up to full knee extension, bring the

opposite knee up and across.

4. Lower the knee and go back down into the mini

Squat.

5. Maintain your balance, carrying full body weight on

one leg for 20 repetitions, before putting the other

foot down on the ground.

6. The foot you are standing on should not be allowed

to shift during this exercise. Do 3 sets of 20 rep’s on

each leg!

Laat weet my asb of dit gehelp het of nie. Dit kanjou baie goedkoper uitwerk as ’n nuwe drywer.

This is not a trick question – if you build a house on sand and an-

other one on a solid rock, which house is going to withstand a heavy

storm the best? Easy answer, the house built on a rock, the one with

a solid foundation. Let’s take Ernie Els and Jim Furyk for example -

their golf swings have nothing in common, but both of them apply

good fundamentals (that I can promise you!!). Our focus is going to

be on the fundamentals which are generally viewed from down the

line. They are: posture, alignment and aim.

Focus on Fundamentals

PostureGolf is one of the only sports where the ball is station-ary. In tennis or cricket, you sometimes only have asplit second to position your body in the best possibleway to achieve the desired result. With golf, time is onyour side so use it wisely! When you think of posture, you need to think of being in a ‘ready’ position. Agood vision to have is that of a soccer goalie preparingto save a goal – I can bet you he’s not standing withstraight legs and hunched over shoulders (pic 1)!

Always make sure that your knees are slightly bent(like when you land on your feet after you havejumped over an obstacle). Create a nice angle betweenyour hips and upper body by bending over from thewaist and NOT dropping the head which will lead toa rounded upper back. (pic 2)

Alignment

Aim

Alignment is a very important fundamental inthe game of golf. More often than not, align-ment and aim are confused. Alignment involvesthe positioning of the body. This includes every-thing that you have two off: two feet, two knees, two hip bones and two shoulders that need to bepositioned in relation to one another (pic 3), notlike in picture 4!

The best way to think of alignment is thinking ofrailway tracks. Looking down the line, your feet will be on the left trackand your club on the right track (the right track represents your ball totarget line as shown in pic 5). It is of vital importance to make sure thatwhen you practice, you are able to constantly check yourself by eitherplacing a club or an alignment stick on the ground (pic 3). This will assistin practicing good alignment so that you can step onto the golf coursewith lots of confidence! Another good way to groove good alignment isby practicing your alignment in the mirror – this is awesome, immediatefeedback as to how your body is aligned!

Aim involves the positioning of the club face, which is essentially the most important part asyou strike the ball with the club face. The biggestmistake most golfers make is ‘aiming’ their bodydirectly at the target, not taking into accountthat the club face then will be aiming a coupleof fairways to the right!! As seen in picture 6, theclub face is perpendicular (or square) to the in-tended ball to target line. You always want to getthe feeling that if there was a mirror on your clubface, it will reflect your intended target!

In picture 7, we can clearly see that the club faceis closed (aiming left) of the intended target. Tosimplify, if you are playing paint ball or shootingwith a ‘kettie’ and you want to strike a specifictarget, but you are aiming at the tree next to thetarget…good luck to the tree!

Have fun practicing and playing!

With 2012 also marking the 80th anniversary of CANSA, this year’s Sanlam Cancer Challenge is expectedto be one of the most memorable in its history.

Golfers will register for the 2012 Sanlam Cancer Challenge in February, followed by the nationwide clubcompetitions from March to July, the Regional Finals from August to September, and culminating in theFinals at Sun City on both the Gary Player Country Club and Lost City Golf Club courses in October.

The Sanlam Cancer Challenge celebrates its 20th Anniversary as South Africa’s biggestcharitable sporting event this year, earning it a place in the South African Golf Hall ofFame. The nationwide amateur tournament, which last year drew 37 000 golfers from800 club qualifying competitions, annually raises millions of rands for the Cancer As-sociation of South Africa (CANSA). Since its inception in 1993 it has raised over R26million for CANSA to assist with research into the disease and the treatment thereof.

“The Sunshine Tour has afforded 40 amateurs the opportunity to compete on the professional circuit thisyear,” said SAGA president Colin Burger.

“One player each from the SAGA, SAGDB, Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation and the SAGA JuniorGolf will be given a spot to tee it up in each of the 10 tournaments that make up the 2012 Big Easy Tour.

“This translates to 40 playing opportunities for our leading amateurs to gain invaluable experience and

test themselves against the professionals. It will also afford them the chance to gain invaluable insight intothe pressures lying ahead when they join the paid ranks.”

Burger said this opportunity follows a determined effort between the SAGA and the Sunshine Tour overthe last 18 months to bridge the traditional divide between the amateur and professional ranks in SouthAfrica.

“There exists a much better understanding between ourselves and the Sunshine Tour these days and thisstep forward is a direct result of the improved relationship between our organisations. I believe this an-nouncement will even further strengthen the relationship between us.”

Selwyn Nathan, Chief Executive of the Sunshine Tour, echoed Burger’s sentiments, saying that the SunshineTour sees this as a major step forward in developing golf in South Africa.

“The SAGA, in turn, feed their amateurs onto the Sunshine Tour. In the past, the view was held that theamateur ranks lost players when they joined the pro circuit, when in fact, it is exactly the opposite.

Stonehage Chief Executive Officer, Giuseppe Ciucci, welcomed the inclusion of the country’s top amateurgolfers to compete alongside professionals in a series that is aimed to offer a wider cross section of profes-sionals the chance to play in competitive professional events.

Burger said that the SAGA wished to give different amateurs the chance to compete, but the selection cri-teria still needed some refinement.

“There is no doubt that this is a fantastic initiative. The chance to compete on a professional level affordsthe amateurs the chance to assess the state of their games and encourages an informed decision about theirfuture in golf.”
