they continue to perform in the same manner or even better. Enhancement of professional competence of the teaching staff is the area which has

been taken very seriously by the Sainik School Society. 9 teachers of our school were deputed to FDRC, New Delhi to attend programmes conducted on science, Mathematics and English. 6 teachers were deputed to attend programs on counselling. Two teachers attended in service training programs in FDRC in Aug 2010.

We believe in imparting instructions by practical method. A science park was commissioned in the school in April 2010. 11 equipment covering physics and Maths topics have been installed. Cadets are encouraged to visit this site regularly. Model classrooms have been started in the school. This exclusive room has got latest equipment viz. Smart board, LCD projector, toppers channel, internet and latest softwares. Most of the teachers are making use of this facility. Physics, Chemistry and Bio Lab have been provided with LCD Projector, latest practical related software JIL. We are sure that these facilities will certainly help our cadets in understanding the subjects better. Classroom of class XI class XII have been connected to Eureka software for easy understanding. We are also in the process of establishing Bio Diversity Park.

Sports and games are the bedrock of discipline and hence a great amount of emphasis is given to these activities at the school. It is mandatory for every cadet to participate in sports and games regularly. The school has infrastructural facilities for all games such as Hockey, Basketball, Volleyball, Football, Cricket etc. Apart from this, the School has a Swimming pool, a Rifl e shooting short range, Multigym facility, Obstacle course, Horse riding, Pool table, Table tennis and an indoor Badminton court. held at Sainik School Tilaiya and Sainik School Chittorgarh respectively.Adventure training is an important facet of our School routine. We are committed to

inculcate the qualities of self confi dence, daring, perseverance against all odds and the will to win in our cadets. With that aim 93 Cadets of class IX were sent to National Adventure training at Kathagodam (Uttrakhand State) from 08 Oct to 17 Oct 2009 under the aegis of shri Aurbindo Educational Society, New Delhi.

Each cadet is sent on educational cum motivational tours to various parts of the country including Defence establishments. In order to minimize the loss of working days, these tours are planned for all the classes together during the third week of November, to coincide with the passing out parades at NDA and Naval Academy.

NCC training is compulsory for the cadets of our School. While we have the Army, Navy and Air Wings at the Junior Division, we have only the Army wing at the Senior Division which was started four years ago.

With a view to channelise the creative energies of our talented cadets and to offer them a welcome change from the tedium of a highly structured training regimen, we have as many as 15 hobby clubs such as the NDA club, journalism club, photography, philately, computer club, environmental club, cycling club etc. Each cadet is a member of one of these clubs.

We are aware of the need to inculcate team spirit, competitiveness and camaraderie among our cadets. Towards that end as many as 27 different competitions in sports and Co-Curricular activities are held regularly throughout the year. We encourage our children to participate in many national level competitions such as Handwriting and painting competition, Talent Search Maths Olympiad and National General Knowledge contest. Our cadets won 6 gold medals, 11 silver medals and 6 bronze medals in Talent Search Maths Olympiad. Cadet Dundesh got 21st rank amongst the students of 270 schools which participated in the competition. National handwriting and colouring competition was held in 2009. Five of our students were commended for excellent handwriting. Cadet Gaviswami BH, won a consolation prize of Rs. 700/- in this competition. They also decorated our schools with ldeal school, ideal Principal and ideal teacher award. United Schools Organization of India conducted All India general knowledge test in 2009. Senior and junior cadets participated in the contest. Cadet kailash of class XI won the third prize at national level. He was awarded cash prize of Rs 400/-

We appreciate the importance of training our cadets to assume roles of responsibility during their stay in the school and also after they pass out of the portals of this hallowed institution so as to enable them to face the world of harsh realities with courage, confi dence and strength. The school investiture ceremony aimed at empowering cadets with responsibilities and providing them leadership training was held on 30 Jun 2010. Maj

Gen VSS Goudar, UYSM, AVSM, VSM an Ajeet of this school was the chief Guest. No institution of this magnitude and repute can effectively function without proper

co-ordination between the Academic & Administrative teams. I wish to put on record that the excellent services rendered by our Academic and Administrative staff to conduct the training programme smoothly are praise worthy. I would like to express our gratitude to the Govt of Karnataka and Ministry of Defence for providing adequate fi nancial help in the last three years. As a result we have been able to maintain our infrastructure in a reasonably good condition. I would also like to express our gratitude to the local administration for extending all possible help to the school for its smooth running. During the last one year our endeavour has been to provide facelift to the existing infrastructure. I would also like to express our gratitude to the various chapters of the OBA for their help and support in liaisoning with the state Govt. and also for providing fi nancial support to several deserving Cadets. In fact, during the last three and a half years they have undertaken several projects right from providing uninterrupted drinking water to provisioning Computers and Laptops for the School, that it shall take a long time if I were to list them here. We are extremely grateful to them for all that they are doing for their alma mater and I assure them that their help and encouragement will continue to be a source of strength to me. OBA has also provided fi nancial help to the needy students and ten students have got fi nancial help from the OBA during 2009 - 10 and the same amount is also available for the year 2010 - 11.

As you are aware, Bijapur is a rain defi cient area. Feeling the need for greening the campus and creating a lung space we have embarked upon a massive and ambitious afforestation drive and have planted more than 10000 saplings in the last 3 -4 years with the help of Forest Department at the Sainik School campus. We are confi dent that fi ve years down the line the campus will certainly look different, greener and more attractive with a variety of fl ora and fauna. We have encouraged cadets to plant trees in their respective areas. Neem trees have been planted which will be looked after by the cadets. This exercise will give them sense of responsibility and respect for environment.

We have been able to achieve many a milestone due to the unstinted support and suggestions of our esteemed Parents; the hard work, team spirit and co - operation of my Offi cers, members of the faculty, staff and General Employees. The sustained hard work, dedication and commitment of my cadets who are the corner stones of this Institution, are indeed commendable. I would like to inform you Sir, and also our esteemed parents that today we are the best Sainik School in Country in terms of infrastructure facilities, academic achievements and administrative excellence due to the dedication and commitment of my Offi cers and staff and also due to the encouragement, support and assistance of our Ajeets.

I am also extremely grateful to the members of the print and electronic media for the excellent coverage being provided to the school. Sir, your gracious presence amidst us this morning means so much to all of us, especially to our young cadets. Once again I extend a very warm welcome to each one of you to this School Founders Day Celebrations.

Sainik School, Bijapur, Pride of Karnataka has completed glorious 47 years of its existence and during this long journey the school has seen phenomenal growth in various fi elds. This great institution has established itself as one of the best organization in Karnataka and has truly and rightly emerged as the most favoured destination for the young and eligible children of Karnataka who prefer a career in the offi cer cadre of Armed Forces.

We have been doing extremely well in academics, curricular and extra curricular activities and maintained our results in board exams for classes X and XII with enviable record. Our school has been decorated with best result Merit certifi cate for class XII during 2008 - 09 and

2009 - 10 amongst all the Sainik Schools. This has been achieved with the dedicated efforts of Headmaster and well trained academic faculty which is constantly involved in honing the all around potential of our brilliant cadets to bring laurels to this institution. We train them to explore and realize full potential and equip them to face the challenges after they leave the portals of this hallowed institution.

We are continuing with our pursuit of motivating more and more cadets to join Armed Forces. The service offi cers have been motivating the cadets in this regard and in addition many senior Ajeets from Army, Navy and Air Force and from the other professions were invited to the school to motivate these young minds. Both the Inspecting Offi cers from Sainik Schools Society were also invited to train cadets to face SSB in more confi dent manner. The number of cadets joining armed forces has been satisfactory during last two years. 13 cadets have cleared SSB for 122nd and 124th course NDA, however all of them could not join due to medical and low merit problems.

Our cadets have performed brilliantly in the sports fi eld also. Our school emerged as Inter Sainik Schools South Zone sports meet champion after a gap of 15 years and also emerged winner in Hockey and Basketball. We have maintained our supremacy in Inter Zonal Hockey Championship.

Over the years many projects related to training and maintenance of buildings have been completed. Many new projects such as, modernization of library, LCD projectors for all the laboratories, latest software, classroom furniture, solar cooking system, solar lighting, solar water heaters, new bus, dish washer, chapatti maker, smart interactive boards, children's park, constrution of NDA motivation cum testing hall, extension of Rastrakoota hostel, renovation of hostel living areas, construction of squash court, installation of military models, asphalting of roads and construction of boundary wall are in progress. Today our school has been recognised as having best infrastructure in terms of academics, accommodation and residence etc. amongst all the Sainik schools and this has been achieved due to ever vigilant Registrar and his team. We hope that these measures will go a long way in achieving academic excellence, enhancing our contribution to NDA and improving the living standards in the campus.

I must acknowledge that development which school has achieved over the years has also been due to the unconditional support of a strong and supportive Ajeets.

I would like to compliment the Editorial Board for having brought out this excellent issue of "THE AJEET" and wish each one of you HAPPY READING.

The word ‘respect’ has a broader perspective. Respect is not a relationship between two people but between equals. Respect is something that can not be demanded or bought. It is earned through good actions, so seek every opportunity to serve others.

Respect is ‘a sense of worth or excellence of a person.’ If we look down to history we respect many great people like Abraham Lincoln, Gandhiji, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam and many others i.e. respect does not depend on the position we occupy, the wealth we possess, the number of people we command, it does not depend on age, size, position or color. SO TO BUILD LOYALTY AND RESPECT WE MUST DEVELOP POSITIVE AND FRIENDLY ATTITUDES.

WHY SHOULD WE RESPECT OTHERS???• It enhances our effi ciency and effectiveness• It brings appreciation and good will• It makes us aware of our strengths and weakness • It brings contentment and joy• It will change our perception and mind set about people and

things. The only way to earn respect is to treat others with respect. We need

to develop in us good qualities. For example responsible, accountable and committed people are respected because they give credit to others and willingly accept blame when things go wrong. So giving is the highest level of living and those who give selfl essly are respected more. We should thank people for the help they give you and appreciate them. Each one i.e. from a layman to the highest offi cer deserves respect because their contributions may be different as their talents are different. When we respect others we become happy and contented.

Always remember the golden rule : “DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE THEM DO UNTO YOU”. “GIVE RESPECT AND TAKE RESPECT”

VALUABLE TIPS TO EARN AND COMMAND RESPECT✦ Self confi dence and self esteem are important factors to make a man

respectable.✦ The way you dress up and the way you make decisions are also

contributing factors in getting respect from others.✦ Always be humble, down to earth.✦ One should never get involved in self-pity and negative thoughts. The

most important thing is to seek happiness in the things you have in your life.

O urs is an E - age. We have been hearing about E - mail, E- commerce, E- education and now E- waste. What exactly is E- waste? Electronic

waste can be defi ned as discarded, surplus, obsolete, broken electrical or electronic devices - i.e. computers, mobiles, television sets, fridges or electronic devices which are sold or discarded by their actual owners.

The question arises, is that a health hazard? It is a serious health hazard and causes pollution as it contains contaminants such as lead, cadmium, beryllium and brominated fl ame retardants. A great care must be taken to avoid unsafe exposure to these types of wastes and trash. E- waste should be reused, resold, recycled to make the environment clean and pollution free. For example during the recycling process the devices should be sent to the original manufacturers. The items like mobile phones, laptops, desktops, digital cameras, computers and auto electronics can be taken back by the manufacturers. This helps in safeguarding from environmental problems, from toxins. Another option is to dismantle or reuse which extends the life span of a device. It helps to save working and repairable parts.

It is a wake up call for all of us as it is surely a deadly health hazard. So we should try to spread the awareness of the dangers of electronic waste, protect human health and limit the adverse environmental effects. So say no to the “Toxic Trade” and save the humanity. PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS AND BAN WASTE TRADE.

The deeds done today, were caused due to yesterday. When the industrialization started, the ozone layer departed. Even though for the Earth is not now, let’s not make it because of you. As you sow , so shall you reap, for the deeds you have done, just don't weep. It’s not the end of the days, but it's time you mend your ways.Where ever you see pollution, you will have to think of a solution. It’s not that this should only be done by you, it’s equally exact duty of mine too. Gone are those days when you could see stars, the ultimate cause - Smoke of cars.Just imagine how the Earth would be, How beautiful ! our eyes could see. This change can be brought by us, but let us not make any fuss. The Earth is drowning , and everyone is frowning. So, come on, Give your fuel tanks a jerk because its our duty to save God's beautiful work.

Have you got 10 minutes for your country ? If yes, then read :You say that our government is ineffi cient. You say that our laws are

too old. You say that the municipality does not pick up the garbage. You say that the phones don't work, the railways are a joke, the Airline is the worst in the world, and mails never reach their destination. You say that our country has been fed to the dogs and is the absolute pits. You say, say and say, what do you do about it ?

We sit back wanting to be pampered and expect the government to do everything for us whilst our contribution is totally negative. We expect the government to clean up but we are not going to stop throwing garbage all over the place, nor are we going to stop to pick up a stray piece of paper and throw it in the bin. We expect the railways to provide clean bathrooms but we are not going to learn the proper use of bathrooms. We want Indian Airlines and Air- India to provide the best of food and toiletries but we are not going to stop pilfering at the least opportunity. Our excuse is that whole system has to change.

So who's going to change the system ? What does a system consist of ? Very conveniently, for us it consists of our neighbours, other house holds, other cities, other communities and the government. But

defi nitely not me and you. When it comes to us actually make a positive contribution to the system, we lock

ourselves along with our families into a safe cocoon and look into the distance at countries far away and wait

for a Mr. clean to come along and work miracles for us with a majestic sweep of his hand.

Dear Indians, this disgust is highly thought provoking and calls for a great deal of introspection. It also pricks our conscience

J oel Goodman has said, “The richest humour is at no one’s expense.” Humour can be described as creative self- expression, an attitude, a

perspective, a way of looking at life and a way of laughing at life.Joel Goodman says, “humour is a way to keep us sane and keep our

dignity when we face insane or inhuman situations.” Humour increases communication and productivity. Humour is a wonderful stress reducer and antidote to upsets. A sense of humour allows us to perceive and appreciate the incongruities of life and provides moments of joy and delight. Lighter moments can lower cortisol levels and there by protect our immune system.

Humour is a tool to bring joy to the environment and connect people. We should always bear in mind that humor should be constructive not offensive or sarcastic. Avoid sarcasm, put downs and ridicule but concentrate on esteem building humour. Laughing with others builds confi dence, brings people together and pokes fun at our common dilemmas. On the contrary laughing at others destroys confi dence and singles out the individuals.

- Is this the right place and setting ?- Is this the right person ?- Does this fi t with the particular place, ethics, rules and agreements?- Does this uplift the integrity of others and myself ?- Is it tasteful ?- Is it timely ?

Most important Are you laughing with others or laughing at others? So develop the ability to laugh at yourself.

REMEMBER THAT ONE SIZE DOES NOT FIT ALL.

Steven Allen “Nothing is quite as funny as the unintended humour of reality.” Humour is a great power and is an effective way of improving the quality of life.

Nanotechnology

4026Ankush A. S.

X A

N anotechnology, in this 21st century has revolutionized the science and its perceptions. It has brought a new lease to life and has

revealed and solved the mysterious puzzle which has haunted mankind for generations together.

Nanotechnology is the study of the controlling of matter on an atomic and molecular scale. Generally it deals with structures of the size 100 nanometers or smaller in at least one dimension and involves developing materials or devices within that size. It is very diverse, ranging from extensions of conventional device physics to completely new approaches based upon molecular self assembly, from developing new materials with dimensions on the nanoscale to investigating whether we can directly control matter on atomic scale.

Nanotechnology has the potential to create many new materials and devices with a vast range of applications such as in medicine, electronic, & energy production. The concerns of toxic and environmental impact have led to debate among advocacy groups and governments on whether special regulation of Nanotechnology is warranted.

Dual- Use Technology Like electricity or computers before

it, nanotech will offer greatly improved effi ciency in almost every facet of life. But as a general-purpose technology, it will be dual-use, meaning it will have many commercial uses and it also will have many military uses - making far more powerful weapons and tools of surveillance. Thus it represents not only wonderful benefi ts for humanity, but also grave risks.

A key understanding of nanotechnology is that it offers not just better products, but a vastly improved manufacturing process. A computer can make copies of data fi les essentially as many copies as you want at little or no cost. It may be only a matter

Sainik School Bijapur46

Page 47: Sainik School Bijpur Ajit 2011 (172 Pages)

AjeetThe

of time until the building of products becomes as cheap as the copying of fi les. That’s the real meaning of nanotechnology, and that is why it is sometimes seen as “the next industrial revolution.”

The term nanotechnology was defi ned by Tokyo science University professor Norio Taniguchi in 1974 as follows : “Nano-technology mainly consists of the processing, separation, consolidation and deformation of material by one atom or by one molecule.”

The development of applications incorporating semi conductor nano particles to be used in the next generation of products, such as display technology, lighting, solar cells and biological imaging .

Nanotechnology not only will allow making many high-quality products at very low cost, but it will allow making new nanofactories at the same low cost and at the same rapid speed. This unique (outside of biology, that is) ability to reproduce its own means of production is why nanotech is said to be an exponential technology. It represents a manufacturing system that will be able to make more manufacturing systems-factories that can build factories-rapidly, cheaply and cleanly. The means of production will be able to reproduce exponentially, so in just a few weeks a few nanofactories conceivably could become billions. It is revolutionary, transformative, powerful and Scientists have done an innovative thing and left the indelible mark in the history of science.

My TeachersI Love my teachersThe builder of my futureLoving is their natureThey give us a long lecture. Also their blessingsThey are my second mother and fatherLike them there is no other this is time to thank them.

T he ministry of human Resource Development brought in a change in the examination pattern of class IX student of all the CBSE

affi liated schools. The New pattern is called Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation or CCE. The students are required to do four formative assessments in each subject. We took up the task of cultivating different plants under various conditions as a formative assessment in Biology.

All the 101 cadets of class IX were divided into two groups and another group of 4 Day scholars. The chalukyans cultivated Brinjal, one group using compost and the other using manure. The Hoysalites took to growing natural only, one group using vermicompost and the other one with a preparation of medicinal herbs such as Neem and Tulsi.

The Adilshahis cultivated cucumber using fertilizers like urea, the other using a natural preparation of cow dung, jaggery and turmeric called ‘Jeevamrutha’. The cadets of Vijayanagar house cultivated lady’s fi nger, one with earth worms and the other without any external additions. The wodeyars took up to growing both Tomato and Brinjal, one in dry fallow soil, the other in fertile soil. The two cadets of Rashtrakuta house cultivated sunfl ower with the help of manure.

The group of Day scholars took up a special project. It involves a test to check whether the plants can grow without soil.

They cultivated beans in a pile of vegetable waste on a wooden planks. The cadets performed various activities such as preparing and

loosening the soil, sowing the seeds, weeding, watering the plants and cleaning the surrounding. Each group has also maintained the weekly records of the growth and development of the plants. All the records were analyzed and the results show that plants grow better and healthier in natural conditions.

This project was highly appreciated by the Principal. Our Headmaster also encouraged the cadets to do the project.

I ndia will never get bogged down. We are strong, confi dent and optimistic let’s join hands and bail out.The economy of today speaks a different language. The ripples

of recession have progressed towards the shore along with various experiences. Showdown, crashing markets, cash crunches are some of the signifi cant words that have lingered around us for the past six months.

What is recession ?Recession is a decline in gross domestic product (GDP) for two or

more consecutive quarters of a year. It is generally preceded by quarters of moving down. ‘Recession’ phrase is often associated with depreciating rupee, falling markets, ongoing infl ation. All in all it becomes diffi cult to take money from the pocket of an individual.

Canoes of recession When we know the price of iron and steel goes up, we think of

postponing our purchase. But if we don’t spend how will the producer get his bread. Ok, then the producer thinks of cutting the cost with the belief that the customer will buy it. Cutting the cost of production means reduction in variable cost. Now, when the prices of iron, steel and machinery are touching the sky, there is a need for reduction in the number of employees. This would mean job insecurity and unemployment.

Everybody the customer, producer and employee pose each other to recession.

Recession may be because of the responsibility of India to feed its enormous population and give job opportunity to one and all. Recession is a new boon. How ? The demand and strength of our nation is lot more than the combined demands of two or more developed countries .

Although India was quite confi dently asserting the political statement that it is immune to the crisis set by America, it has stated facing the heat with the decline in exports, no matter which ever fi nancial agency supported. Another super power Europe declared technically that it had fallen into recession. This dealt a great blow to the export industry. Global recession has equalifi ed America and Europe and is now proceeding towards regional countries.

SURVIVAL STRATEGIESWhen tough gets going, going gets tough. When the recession hit

many companies had a nervous breakdown but some amongst them took it as a challenge and succeeded in overcoming it.

Let’s see some of their strategies: 1) Cost cutting. 2) Getting back to basics.3) Motivating employees.4) Endorsing products.5) Understanding public sentiments. 6) Right moves at right time. 7) Accessing unchartered avenues

Let us look into some of the points that can help Indian Govt:1) Cuts in revenue are generally the fi rst step any government would

take during slump. 2) Hike in spending by government. to boost employment.3) The way out for construction sector is to reduce the unbelievable

prices to bring back the buyers.4) Depreciating rupee against dollar could boost the export industry.5) Decline in oil prices could make an impact on import industry.

All of us have been affected by recession in one or the other way. We are hearing and have heard many woeful stories everyday. It may not be just unemployment but a lot more than that. It is about family splits, emotional and mental instability and social deprivation.

It is necessary to maintain fi scal sanity of saving, earning and helping thy neighbour. While the economy of world is in chartered waters, it is the need of the hour and a measuring factor – CONFIDENCE. At this time of crises of let us be optimistic and make a change.

Share your experiences, opportunities, thoughts and remedies with all around you.

Motivate everyone around you to make a change.

Oniomania Oniomania W hat is oniomania ? It is an act of

compulsive buying. It can be called spending too much on shopping. Today there is lot of stress and tension in everybody life and some of the people release this stress and then soon go for shopping or purchasing recklessly. It can be said to be an addition to shopping. This word ‘oniomania’ is coined from the Greek words ‘onios’ (for sale) and mania (madness).

The symptoms of it are that the sufferer buys expensive things which he or she doesn’t require. Shopholism is a threat to the health. So the next time you go out to the market be careful to check the compelling desire to buy. Life is beautiful, so enjoy it.

Be careful.....Be careful of your thoughtsfor your thoughts become your words. He was destiny's favourite child. He was often called the phoenix of Kannada cinema. His premature death has left a vacuum in the fi lm

industry. He is none other than late Dr. Vishnuvardhan .Vishnuvardhan was born in Mysore. His original name was

Narayan Rao Sampath Kumar. He started his fi lm career with a role in noted playwright and Jnanpith awardee Girish Karnad directed “Vamshavruksha”. The audience always remembers his trade mark smirk and slightly bent gait. He became the darling of Kannada fi lm lovers with a superb performance in ‘Nagarahaavu.’ He brilliantly essayed varied roles - an angry man to venerable family head. He has acted in many fi lms such as ‘Kalla-kulla’, ‘Aptamitra’, ‘Bandhana’, ‘Yajamanna’ etc.

A legend's life that is essentially larger than cinema is a prerogative of a chosen few. Vishnuvardhan the sandalwood icon who died on the penultimate day this decade was a defi nitive member of that tribe.

Like any legend whose story remains in complete without a thorny path to glory. Vishnuvardhan too had to negotiate such angstridden movements early in his voyage during the fi lm of “Gandhada Gudi” in which Vishnuvardhan played the role of brother to Dr. Rajkumar the matinee God of Sandalwood. His fi lms such as ‘Aptamitra’ and ‘Yajamaana’

that broke all box offi ce records were blockbusters. Vishnuvardhan had an astute and an almost intuitive understanding of dynamics of market. He would say “the product is important not the source.” His 199 fi lms have been completed and his 200th fi lm that is ‘Aptarakshaka’ has recently been completed.

Vishnuvardhan once told media persons that, “I never decide anything for my future. Every thing depends on destiny and it's the God who has to decide what we have to do”. Considering the way the script of his life went and career turned out he surely was destiny's favourite child. He has immortalised himself in the hearts of his audience. May his soul rest in peace.

India has a world to offer to the rest of the world in terms of its vast variety of languages, ethnic stocks, history and of course its rich fauna and fl ora. India is a land famous for its secular symphony.

The land of Karnataka offers a fantastic balance of natural attractions and historical architecture. Here we got beaches to royal palaces. Every corner of Karnataka is very beautiful and attractive. Karnataka is known for its beautiful sculpture works which are present in Aihole, Pattadkul, Hakebidu, Mysore. We have got biggest monolith of the world i.e. Gomateshwar of height 57.5 feet, which is at Shravan Belagola. We have also got huge number of water falls in the world. One of them is Jog falls which is known all over the world. Apart from all history and monuments,

we also have numerous religious places. It is diffi cult to judge which tourist place is the most beautiful in Karnataka state since all the places are beautiful, attractive and have their own style and importance.

In the past history Karnataka was ruled by great empire Vijaynagar kingdom where gold, pearls and other precious materials were sold in the streets. By this we can come to know richness of our state in the past. Karnataka has a very vast history. In this modern era India might be

As we know 1411 tigers are left in India, major of those tigers are left in Karnataka. Karnataka is rich in wildlife resource. Varieties of fl ora and fauna can be found in the forest regions of Karnataka. Karnataka has many wildlife sanctuaries and national parks such as Bandipur National Park in Chamrajnagar district, Rajiv Gandhi national park in Nagarhole, Mysore District, Ranganthittu bird sanchuary Mandya district and Badhra wildlife sanctuary Chikmangalur. Every year birds from African countries, Europe and from some countries of Asia migrate to Ranganthittu bird sanctuary, Karnataka. By this we can also say that Karnataka is place with beautiful birds and animals.

Karnataka is rich in its culture and heritage. We have got unity in diversity. Though people follow different religious ideas but all have a common feeling that they are all kannadigas and of course Indians. All kannadigas treat tourists as their own guest with full pride and “Athiti Devo Bhava” is common motto among all Kannadigas.

If you get a chance don’t think of any other place just escape to Karnataka to enjoy the mind blowing beauty. So come explore the fascinating KARNATAKA..... is calling you. Incredible India.

I t is the land that proclaims” Nirvana is not a myth” that kept us waiting for our Adventure camp at Nainital (Uttarakhand) desperately. It

We left Bijapur Railway station by Goa Express on 5th October and reached Delhi on 7th, we were proud to be in the capital of India and to visit two most outstanding and prominent monuments of NewDelhi - The Parliament & Rashtrapati Bhawan. We left for Kathgodam by Ranikhet Express from where we took a bus to Nainital city and reached on 8th Oct noon.

The Himalayan Branch of Sri Aurobindo Ashram that lay at an exhilarating 700m above sea level hosted our camp.

Following was the schedule for our 8 day’s stay - 8\10\09 : Trek to land’s (4 kms)9\10\09 : Rock Climbing course begins Rock scrambling, Trek to Hanuman Mandir10\10\09 : Bouldering, Trek to Sri Aurobindo (6.5Kms) Peak11\10\09 : Climbing12\10\09 : Rappelling, visit to city13\10\09 : River crossing14\10\09 : Trek to snow view and Kainchi (16Km) visit to Sainik School Gorakhal.15\10\09 : Trek to Naini peak. Some one has truly said “Health is Wealth”. Health is not mere absence of disease but it is physical, mental and social well being of an individual.

Most of us exist, eat, work, play and sleep but fail too live. The most important thing we often forget is that while existence is a fact, living is a art.

Art of living technique tells us a three tier approach i.e.; healing breath, healing food and healing habits to realize that we are special. Art of living is founded by this Holiness Sri Sri Ravishankar Guruji, a spiritual leader and world renowned humanitarian. Its aim is to nurture humanitarian values to be contented, help the needy and unfortunate ones and even be at solace. We are just casual or careless about the air we breathe. We should breathe properly.

Our ancient sages tell us that it is possible to prolong our life span by three times if we only reduce the speed of heart beat by deep breathing. So there is double advantage of deep breathing improved health and increased life span. Art of living helps us to get rid of different kinds of accumulated toxins in our body due to modern life styles in urban areas through a special technique- a divine gift called “SUDARSHAN KRIYA”. To know how it brings our breathing process to rhythm, charges us with energy and enthusiasm we have to learn it and practice. It is just amazing so just adopt and watch miracles happen in you.

The ancient proverb “you become what you eat”. Good food habits act as preventive and curative medicine. Our modern lifestyle is to consume food more to satisfy the tongue than the belly. The three special balancing characteristics of us are Vata- the wind that promotes mobility, Pitta – the

heat that sustains life and Kapha- the phlegm which helps stability, should be in a healthy proportion in our system to maintain proper equilibrium. A person with this equilibrium will have a disease free body and happy mind with peaceful soul.

Our planet is an amazing one with different duties assigned to different areas and people. This huge company of the world demands and depends on us to keep good company with one another. Here again art of living teaches us to learn to live together with educative hints- such as to admire in public and admonish in privacy, to accept people as they are and not as you want them to be, to deposit your house problems at door steps of your offi ce and pick them if you like when you return home, not to live in the past- without failing to learn from it, to not to live in the future without failing to plan for it and many such, for the corporate community called mankind.

Thus we can conclude that Art of living is a guidance to lead a peaceful, healthy and spiritual life.

Be Thankful when you don’t know something; for it gives you the opportunities to learn.

Be thankful for the diffi cult times;During those times you grow.

T he future of our Mother Earth and its inhabitants depends on our ability to maintain and preserve the life support system. Man

is a selfi sh creature and he has used up the resources available for his selfi sh motives. Now a big question arises - what about the future generations !

We have to start thinking about renewable resources that can be renewed and replenished quickly. Solar energy is a free gift of nature and it can be used directly. The most important advantage of solar energy is that it is inexhaustible and non- polluting. We enjoy the sunshine and sunrays every day. Do we know that solar energy trapped from the sun can be used in solar cells to produce electricity? Many of these cells are joined into solar panels to generate power for heating and lighting purpose. This technology of utilizing solar energy benefi ts a lot of countries that are blessed with abundant sunshine. Isn't it amazing.

Did we know this much about the energy from the sun? India is lucky to receive solar energy for greater part of the year. It is estimated that during a year India receives the energy equivalent to more than 5,000 trillion KWH. As we are aware that we are progressing technologically in leaps and bounds, we have to tap the latest sources of energy to meet the basic requirements and to improve our living standards. The total solar energy absorbed by Earth's atmospheres, oceans and land masses

is approximately 3,850,000 exajoules (EJ) per year.

There are innumerable ways for using solar energy.

Solar cookers use sunlight for cooking drying and pasteurization. They can be grouped into three broad categories : Box cookers, Panel cookers and Refl ector cookers.

Solar hot water systems use sunlight to heat water. In low geographical latitudes

(below 40 degrees) from 60 to 70 % of the domestic hot water use with temperatures up to 600c can be provided by solar heating systems.

Active solar technologies increase the supply of energy and are considered supply side technologies, while passive solar technologies reduce the need for alternate resources and are generally considered demand side technologies.

Some vehicles use solar panels for auxiliary power, such as for air conditioning to keep the interior the cool, thus reducing fuel consumption.

Thermal mass systems can store solar energy in the form of heat at domestically useful temperatures for daily or seasonal durations.

In 1974, the unmanned AstroFlight Sunrise plane made the fi rst solar fl ight. On 29 April 1979, the Solar Riser made the fi rst fl ight in a solar powered, fully controlled, man carrying fl ying machine, reaching an altitude of 40 feet (12m ).

Solar concentrating technologies such as parabolic dish, trough and Scheffl er refl ectors can provide process heat for commercial and industrial applications.

Solar energy can be stored at high temperatures using molten salts. Salts are an effective storage medium because they are low-cost, have a high specifi c heat capacity and can deliver heat at temperatures compatible with conventional power systems.

Solar energy is not available at night, and energy storage is an important issue because modern energy systems usually assume continuous availability of energy.

Thus, the Sun has been radiating an enormous amount energy at the present rate for nearly 5 billion years and will continue radiating at that same rate, so we should develop the technology to use this energy more effi ciently and judiciously to suit our changing life styles.

C arlyle has said, “Genius is but another name for the capacity to take infi nite pains.” It means that it is the unique privilege of a man

to change and master his fate through hard and constant work. If we peep into the history of mankind we will draw a conclusion that all the achievements of great men is the result of hard work over long periods of time.

The stresses of modern life i.e. skyrocketing prices, mad rat race, morass corruption, terrorism, global warming and so on are immense and it can be effectively counteracted with hard work. Even our heritage since Vedas lays emphasis on performing i.e. work. Lord Krishna in Gita says :

H$_©Ê`odm{YH$mañVo _m \$bofw H$XmMZ…(Seek to perform your duty, but lay no claim to its fruit.) We should try to do our utmost to do our work in the best possible manner. “An action performed well is a reward in itself.”

Our life is made of what we do i.e. our course of action. It is our deed or work that can make our lives meaningful, enjoyable and sublime. Work gives a man an opportunity for self-understanding, self expression and self development.

Golden rules for success : Take reasonable risks. Be enterprising. Seek and accept responsibilities.

Don't try to play safe and hide in the crowd.

Remember to err is human. Only make sure you learn from mistakes and don't repeat them.

Display confi dence and enthusiasm. Enthusiasm changes your heart with a greater force to produce extraordinary results.

lark. It was our long-cherished dream to visit the Dreamland Water Park situated at Miraj in Maharashtra. We all gathered in front of the mess at 6:30 A.M., with our tails up.

The dream trip started at 7:00 A.M. We were under the guidance of our Music Teacher Mr. C. N. Jadhav. So it was really like an orchestra. Our spirits were so high that we couldn’t control our emotions. On the way to Miraj we sang and had a lot of fun in the bus. Some among us really reminded me of our fore fathers the monkeys. Truly, they jumped from one seat to the other, as if they have forgotten the fact that a lot of evolutionary changes have taken place down the ages and that they are now able to walk and talk. Some of us peeped through the window as if they were seeing the world outside Sainik School Campus for the fi rst ever time. Without a shadow of doubt I could say that the cadets inside the bus behaved as if they were birds outside the cage.

We reached our Dream Spot at 10:00 A.M. We gazed at the vast and wonderful park. We were so excited that in the twinkling of an eye we ran to the dressing room to put on our swimming trunks. But Jadhav Sir called us back to have breakfast. As we were nearing the dining room the aroma of the breakfast made us move fast. It was so tempting that at the moment I felt that I could have ridden even the ‘Titanic’ in my mouth !

After a delicious breakfast we put on swimming trunk. The offi cials of the park really rolled out the red carpet and each one of us felt that we are in a warm corner. They guided us towards a blue coloured tunnel. As we entered the tunnel the water pushed us forward end we all dashed into the water one after the other. It was really exciting and enjoyable.

Next it was a yellow coloured open slippery slide. We started from the top and went on a zig –zag movement. In the third ride we were sent to a red coloured tunnel like the blue one. It was really an unforgettable experience. Towards the end of this tunnel we felt that we were fl ying out of it. It exhilarated us even beyond our expectations.

Next it was a pool. Its peculiarity is that when the music started we saw waves in the pool. We were told to be careful not to be pulled down by the waves. This was the last ride. Later we enjoyed a delicious lunch.

With our belly full, a wonderful world of magic opened before us. The magician was showing interesting tricks. It entertained each and everyone of us and we danced.

It was 4:00 P.M. and the time had come for us to leave the park. It was a very disappointing moment for all of us. We still wanted to spend some more hilarious moments in the park. I think the park offi cials really understood the fact that some of us wanted to stick around. To cheer us up they gave us chocolate and ice-cream.

At last we started our return journey and the hilarious mood in the morning gave way to sleepy and tiresome mood. We all slumped into our seats. The jumping monkeys in the morning turned to quiet sleeping kids. We reached the campus at 8 p.m. Finally we felt that there is a warm corner for each and everyone of us in Sainik School, our seniors are here to guide us and comfort us. But even today sometimes I still dream about that faraway ‘Dreamland Water Park’! The memory is still fresh !

“L ives of great men remind us, we can make our lives sublime. And departing leave behind us, foot prints on the sands of time.”

All of us know that Mother Teresa spent her whole life helping the “poorest of the poor”. Bojaxhiu Agnes was the original name of Mother Teresa. From her childhood itself she was interested in serving the poor. In 1929 Agnes reached Calcutta and found a job as a teacher. She was disturbed after seeing the endless poverty and misery in India and she realized that the goal of life is to provide solace and comfort to the downtrodden. In 1931 she was christened as ‘Teresa’. She used to go to the homes of the sick and the affl icted and nurse them. She got

the name “Mother Teresa’ because of her motherly love and affection.

Wherever she went her message was the same: ‘Love the poor’. Her message of love and hope reached millions. Mother Teresa was renowned for her will power. Before her death she said “A joyful heart is the inevitable result of a heart burning with love.”

While helping the people she said “we are not social workers. We may be doing social work in the eyes of some people, but we must be contemplatives in the heart of the world.”

When receiving the Nobel prize she was asked “What can we do to promote world peace?” Her response was “Go home and love your family.” This was the Nobel peace prize winner Mother Teresa.

Thus, she was truly an angel of love, mercy and selfl essness.

At home a friend, abroad an introduction, In solitude a role, in society an ornament . Education may cost fi nancial sacrifi ce, but in both money and value it

repays back hundred fold, It chastens nice, guides virtue and gives grace to the genius to the

genius. It is the doorstep to the temple of wisdom which gives knowledge and

alleviates ignorance. Does education means rotting or storing information for the purpose

of answering examinations, to get degrees, diplomas or certifi cates or to acquire, absorb knowledge to make it useful for our life.

Education does not end with textbooks rather it starts with them. Is this termed as Education ? Storing hundreds of scientifi c laws but never making it useful for mankind – is this called education ? Enjoying national holidays in name of national heroes but never aspiring to know something about them their life – is it called real education? ?

The fi rst part of life be it half or one third is spent on education – on acquisition of knowledge for livelihood.

Education helps us to build, create, increase and produce, the capacity to differentiate between good and bad, sweet and bitter, clean and unclean thoughts and deeds. It helps us to master, how to believe, how to behave, how to decide and how to act, how to learn and how to earn. It dissipates one fears, overcome our anxiety and removes worry.

grow wisdom for common beings. It helps as to grow our wisdom in judgement, in understanding and equips us to meet the challenges of age – it develops our ability to face the consistent challenges of the generation. The storehouse of books gives us abundant knowledge of results and experiences of great people.

To think high, to aim big is essential with text book knowledge, to eradicate human confusion, human misery and diseases. Evil acts and prejudices are obstacles, barriers and road blocks due to ignorance. Advancement in Industrial technology diminishes poverty. Progress in medical science eradicates diseases. Achievements in technical world reduces cost and labour.

The true guiding path is Education which ensures greater and better thoughts which provides peace, prosperity and progress to all.

If others can grow, others can develop, others can program, why not we..... It all needs a thought, concern and effort.

The strength of a country rests in its individuals and hope lies in young minds so if we achieve, the nation achieves, if we prosper, the nation prospers.

Let’s have a goal to free one man from poverty, illiteracy and diseases. Have a vision to solve the problems of pollution and population in our generation. Let’s start from us, we are the part of whole. Problems are there because opportunities are not there. Advancement in every sphere is not there because thought, effort and belief is not there in every individual. Every individual being responsible can change the face of himself and

thereby changing the face of the nation. Join the NLM (National Literacy Mission) and bring light in the lives of those who live in the darkness of illiteracy. Be a human – useful, resourceful and benefi cial for self and society forming individual integrity and ethical environment establishing harmony between us and the society. But only, if we decide so …..

Be optimistic Let us start from us.
