INTRODUCTION

1. The scheme to establish Sainik Schools was introduced in 1961 with the primaryaim of preparing boys academically, physically and mentally for entry into the NATIONALDEFENCE ACADEMY, Khadakwasla, Pune.

2. Other objectives of the Scheme are :(a) To remove regional imbalances in the Officer cadre of the Defence Services.(b) To develop qualities of body, mind and character which enable the youngboys of today to become good and useful citizens of tomorrow.(c) To bring Public School Education within the reach of the common man.

3. Sainik School, Korukonda is one of the 25 Sainik Schools started in different partsof the country at the initiative of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Dr.V.K.Krishna Menon, thethen Defence Minister. 4. The School is located in a spacious estate of 206 acres of the old VizianagaramPalace,11 kms from Vizianagaram RailwayStation (EC Railway) and 60 kms f romVisakhapatnam Railway Station. Smt. BhagiradhiDevi, Maharaj Kumari Rani Saheba ofVizianagaram at the instance of her husbandLt.Col. Maharaj Kumar Dr. VijayanandGajapathiraju (Sir Vizzy) gifted the KorukondaPalace for the purpose of running a SainikSchool. The prime mover of this gift was theirnephew, the great philanthropist and educationistDr. PVG Raju, Raja Saheb of Vizianagaram.

Distinctive Features5. Sainik School Korukonda is a residentialSchool for boys run on Public School lines. It isa member of the Indian Public SchoolsConference and is affiliated to the Central Boardof Secondary Education, Delhi. While developingsound character, team spirit, dedication to duty,patriotic outlook and desire to serve the countrywith efficiency, the school prepares studentsacademically for All India Secondary SchoolExamination (Class X), All India Senior SchoolCertificate Examination (Class XII) and also forthe UPSC Entrance Examination to the NationalDefence Academy.

6. The School imparts instruction in English Medium. Since all the cadets are obligedto take the UPSC Entrance Examination for NDA & NA the plus two stage (after passingclass XII) and since there is more emphasis on Science Stream in the NDA curriculum,the Sainik School caters only for Science Stream Subjects after class X.

7. Besides academic advancement, the students are encouraged to develop theircreative faculties through co-curricular activities and hobby clubs. They are also introducedsystematically to all major games and are given NCC training compulsorily. Coursesaimed at developing the spirit of adventure are arranged for selected students; but experienceof camp life is given to all of them.

Staff

8. The Principal is the Chief Executive andAcademic head of the School. He is assisted byVice Principal in academics and AdministrativeOfficer in administration. The Principal, VicePrincipal and Administrative Officer of the schoolare Service Officers of the Ranks of Col and Lt Col/ Major respectively or their equivalents from Navyor Indian Air Force. The teaching staff are highlyqualified, experienced, motivated and have the aptitude for Public Schools. Besides, thereis also a sizeable staff to cater to the administrative needs of the School.

Extra Curricular and Co-curricular Activities

9. A large number ofthese activities such asdebates, declamations, quizcompetitions, dramatics etc.,are held regularly throughoutthe year. Boys areencouraged to participate incompetitions and contests outside the school.

NCC and Excursions / Adventure Activities

10. NCC is compulsoryfor all boys. Boys are takenon excursion every year tovarious DefenceEstablishments and otherplaces of eductationalinterest. Selected boysare sponsored for adventurecourses at HMI, NIM etc.

Computer Lab

11. The School has a well equippedcomputer lab with the latest computers andmultimedia kit as well as internet broadbandconnection. All the systems are connectedon LAN.

Hobby Clubs

12. Facilities are provided for a large number ofhobbies in Art, Craft, Music etc., each under the chargeof a Master.

Library

13. The School has a good Reading Room cum ACLibrary and the facility exists for issuing books to theboys in the afternoon. News papers and Magazinesare also made available for reading.

MI Room

14. The School has an MI Room (Hospital) with 12 beds. A qualified Nursing Assistantis also attached to the MI Room. All the boys undergo periodical medical check ups.

Boarding

15. The boys live in Houses. The Schoolhas eight Houses to accommodate the boys.Each House has a Master ’s residenceattached to it. The Housemaster looks afterthe personal, physical and emotional needsand welfare of the boys.
