Prayers / Peticiones
St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church
Dear Friends, Last week Pope Francis formally signed the decree recognizing the miracle needed to advance the cause for canonization of Blessed Oscar Romero, the slain Archbishop of San Salvador. Archbishop Romero was a courageous defender of the poor, denouncing violence against civilians in a time of great conflict in El Salvador. He was assassinated while offering Mass at Divine Providence Hospital on March 24, 1980. The miracle attributed to his intercession was the cure of a woman named Cecilia who became seriously ill after giving birth in August 2015. The doctor told Cecilia’s husband that she would likely die and that if he believed “in something, in a god, (pray) for her because the way she is, it’s likely that she’ll die.” The husband found a prayer card of Archbishop Romero and prayed for his intercession. Cecilia came out of a coma and made a full recovery. The couple knew it was a miracle and eventually reported it to their pastor, who then reported it to the Vatican. The prayers of the Holy Ones, like Blessed Oscar Romero, strengthen our belief in God’s presence and love in the Communion of Saints. The witness of holy lives also gives courage and inspiration to the rest of us as we struggle to be faithful in a confused and often violent world. Archbishop Romero was an outspoken churchman. Because of this, he had enemies. Nonetheless, he could not remain silent and he believed the Church should not remain silent in the face of evil and injustice. He knew that his homilies against unjust aggressors would put him in danger. He knew that he would be in a worse situation were he to neglect his responsibility to speak up and to speak out. It is easy in our day and in our own situation to find a way to stay “safe.” There are many injustices occurring all around us. Could we shine the light of Jesus’ truth and compassion on the shadows we discover? Or should we begin by asking for the willingness and ability to notice those shadows? There are many ways to make a difference, including prayer and sacrifice, participation in the political process with all of our Church’s teachings at heart, witnessing by word and deed. Injustice brings suffering. Since all of us suffer maybe we can make this our prayer: Lord, by sharing my suffering with you, help me to see with you the suffering of your people all around me. Blessed Oscar Romero said: “There are some things that can only be seen through eyes that have cried.” Help us, Lord Jesus and all your Holy Ones, to stand together with you for one another. With my prayers, Fr. Matthew Zuberbueler Pastor

Stewardship of Time and Talent / Corresponsabilidad de Tiempo y Talento I will be their God and they shall be my people.” - JEREMIAH 31:33
What does it mean to be God’s people? It means we recognize that everything we have and everything we are be-longs to God. We aren’t “owners” of anything, we are merely “stewards” of the gifts God has given us. It means we are willing to use our gifts and our lives to care for our neighbors and the world, just as God cares for us.

Dear St. Anthony Family, March has been a very special month for us! After much prayer, study and preparation, our second grade students received the sacrament Reconciliation for the first time. Thanks to our priests, especially Fr.
Jeb, and Miss Stoops, their teacher, for helping our students foster a love for this beautiful sacrament of mercy and healing. We pray it is one they will frequent often, with their families, drawing upon those graces as they grow in holiness. Speaking of holiness, our Eighth graders received many grades during the first week of March, attending the Diocesan-wide Vocations Mass with Bishop Burbidge and attending their Confirmation Retreat with Fr. Z and their religion teacher, Mr. Casper. Come, Holy Spirit, enlighten the minds of our youth and set their hearts on fire for love of you! Many thanks, for your continued prayers for us. You all remain in our prayers. Sincerely Yours in Christ, Ms. Buçaj, Principal
