20th Sunday in Ordinary Time August 18, 2019 3

From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

Summer can be a difficult time for many, when extreme heat can contribute to wildfires and drought, heat-related illness and difficulty breathing. It is disturbing, then, to hear Jesus say in today’s Gospel, “ I have come to set the earth on fire.” Jesus’ mission was as much to challenge us as to comfort. As disciples, we are challenged to remain faithful, no matter the weather. Have we been set on fire in our commitment to our faith?

God bless you,

Fr. Stan

Greetings! I’m delighted to share some Good News about our Religious Education Program with you. During this past year of religious education the program was comprised of 28 families and 41 students. We are currently registering students for the upcoming year and look forward to next weekend, August 24th & 25th, which is officially designated as our registration weekend. In keeping with tradition we will celebrate our opening liturgy at the 10:30 mass on Sunday, September 8th which will be followed by our pot-luck brunch. At this liturgy we will display our FAMILY FAITH QUILT where each family is represented by a specific square on the quilt. Together we are one family of faith. We are especially grateful for all nine of our catechists who are returning for the upcoming year. They are assisted by our faithful substitutes, leaders of song, session secretaries and hostesses. I ask that you keep all of our parents, students and catechists in the Religions Education Program in your prayers as they continue their journey of faith. God bless, Ann Stauffer P.S. Mark your calendar for our annual Pancake Breakfast, Sunday, October 27th.

During the absence of the pastor, some of our parish groups wish to share their activities with us in his column. This week we welcome our Religious Education

Director.

RESPECT LIFE Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker’s signed SB 25 into law over the Memorial Day weekend, despite an outpouring of protest, and witness slips against the bill that outnumbered the opposition 4 to 1. According to the Archdiocese’s Respect Life Office, the state’s extreme abortion law is tantamount to “legalizing the death penalty, with no possibility of ap-peal, for viable unborn babies.” And Illi-nois taxpayer’s have to pay for it!

The deceptively named “Reproductive Health Act” is actually an Illinois abortion mandate that brings the following medical and ethical outrages with it: —All licensing requirements for abor-tion clinics are abolished, and health and safety inspections ended, despite those inspections shutting down numerous dirty abortion clinics in recent years. —Dismemberment abortions of unborn babies up to 40 weeks gestation, who feel pain, without anesthesia, are legal-ized. —Every private health insurance policy, including those for small churches and religious nonprofits, must pay for elec-tive chemical and surgical abortions. —Every unborn child, up to and even during birth, will now have NO legal rights in Illinois. —Abortion is labeled a “fundamental right,” hence protected to a greater degree than Free Speech and other First Amendment rights. The Thomas More Society will be challenging this inhumane law in our courts soon. Please consider supporting this effort. The non-profit group is cur-rently involved in cases in 28 states and Washington, DC. You may reach them at 312-782-1680 or [email protected]. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

In recent weeks, we have reviewed how the Churches of East and West have enriched one another, and this past Thursday’s solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was born in the Eastern Church. It is a gift from the ancient Church of Jerusalem, a commemoration of the death of Mary, and a feast charged with a deep sense of the Resurrection. Mary, the first disciple, is the first to share fully in Christ’s victory over death. In the tradition of the East, August 15 is the “Dormition of the Theotokos,” or the “Falling Asleep of the Godbearer.” There is no shad-ow of death or gloom in the theology, since this is seen as a transformation of Mary’s life into a heavenly and immortal existence. There is a sense in the tradition that she who made earth heavenly and exalted the human race by her faithfulness is glorified today. A persistent legend among Orthodox Christians tells how all the disciples, except Thomas, who was preaching in India, were present at Mary’s death and burial, and sat by the tomb for three days. On the third day, Thomas saw Mary’s body rising to heaven. She greeted him as “my friend,” and he was escorted by angels to proclaim her as-sumption to the others, who then realized her tomb was empty. Thus Thomas, the one who expressed doubt at the resurrection of Christ, received a gift from Mary: the chance to proclaim resurrection faith to the disciples. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. LISTEN TO JESUS AND THE PROPHETS

Prophets have always had a tough row to hoe. Their words, often unwelcome, are used against them to persecute and even kill them. Such was the fate of the Old Testament prophets, and Jeremiah is a great example of this. Jesus endured oppo-sition from sinners, and did not turn back from a shameful death in order to rise to a glorious new life. The ultimate prophet, Jesus sought to warn the people of his time and ours of the divisions that his words would cause, showing himself to be the prophet of all time. We all need to look at our divisions and dilemmas in light of Jesus’ teachings and warnings, and seek to understand all that he has proclaimed and taught about what will happen if we fail to listen.
