SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FROM THE DESK OF

FR. SERGIO OVANDO, PASTOR….

Ask and you will receive… In the teachings of Jesus presented in today’s Gospel passage, taken together with the beauti-ful Lord’s Prayer, we hear of the necessity to pray and the promise that what we ask will be given to us. I would like to offer a brief explana-tion of this last part. When the Lord says that if we ask, it will be giv-en to us, he says this in the context of the Our Father, which teaches that God is our Father and that the will of God should be done on earth as it is in heaven. In this, we need to take into consideration the will of God, who is a good and loving Father, as mentioned in the today’s gospel reading: Which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him ca stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him? (Mt 7:9-11). God is much more than we are. Thus, when we ask in prayer and do not receive, there must be a reason, even though we are ourselves are certain that what we are praying for would truly be for our good. In just the same way, parents may have reasons to make decisions that are not known or understood by their children. Also, regarding the promise of receiving what we ask for, God’s response is not exactly what we ask for or when we ask, or in the way that we expect. As a good father, God gives us what we need in the proper time. As we reflect on the gospel, I ask you to work on your relationships with God, “our Father,” and try to understand how the Lord answers our prayers.

STEWARDSHIP IN SCRIPTURE by Deacon Rick Haeckel

Persistence asks that we continue striving for something that we don’t have but want. Remember times in our youth asking for something, “please, please, can I, can I?” Or being told that we have to practice an athletic skill… “if you want to be better at …., you have to put in the time.” Learning how to ride a bicycle requires many falls before that first solo ride without mishap. The list is long, well into our adult lives. Any physical skill asks that we repeatedly practice in order to first acquire the skill (think about a baby using a spoon) and then continued practice to increase our level of proficiency. Today’s scripture readings highlight that persistence is a fundamental part of our spiritual life and growth. Abraham politely but repeatedly asks the Lord to spare Sodom from destruction for the sake of the innocent people there. Abraham’s continued questioning reveals the mercy that God shares. The persistence of questions is not the cause of the Lord’s mercy but rather shows that God’s mercy is beyond limit. The Gospel reveals the words of what we pray so persistently, the Our Father. Jesus gives further emphasis on the persistence of prayer in the story of the man who finally arises to answer the needs of a midnight caller. It isn’t his friendship with that person that causes him to reluctantly accede to the caller but rather, as Jesus says, “he will get up to give him whatever he needs because of his persistence.” Another way of looking at persistence comes from the old adage (slightly modified) “anything worth doing is worth beginning badly.” Our relationship with God asks that we be persistent in prayer. In our lifetime journey of faith we grow to see prayer as a question, one which sees God as the source of our very selves. Whether or not we think our prayers of petition are answered as we want, we are asked to place our needs before God knowing that the action of asking is itself the key. Raising our hearts and minds to God in prayer centers us in that place where we find grace from the simple act of bringing hopes and wishes into the place from which all goodness comes. Not that our wishes are answered as we expect, but that we grow in the realization that God’s presence is always with us… Persistence in prayer, or any act of goodness we are called to live as Christians, develops our ability to look beyond our desire for personal fulfilment. Talk about the need for practice! One of the fundamental “skills” we need to develop is finding satisfaction in relation to others. Giving of our self, as Jesus did/does, so we may live as emissaries of the love Jesus has for all.

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

St. Catherine School News

One of the classes offered during our summer session was Cookie Madness. Students made eight types of cookies in four days, taking their

cookies home to share with their families. It was a huge success and was enjoyed by both

the bakers and their families.

SCHOOLWIDE LEARNING EXPECTATIONS

As part of ongoing school improvement/accountability, St. Catherine School established school wide learning expectations. These em-body the school’s mission/philosophy, as we look to where we want our students to be when they graduate. Within each category are sub-categories through which student progress is tracked. St. Catherine graduates are: Competent readers, writers and speakers Organizers, evaluators & analyzers of information Utilizers of technology Grounded in faith and the teachings of Jesus Active responsible members of the community Respectful of themselves, others & God’s creation Stewards of the environment

FAMILY NIGHT Family Night is a tradition in many families, but with busy work and sports schedules, family time together is often hard to fit in. Be sure to schedule time for fun and fellowship with your family. Playing games, watching movies, bike rides and hikes in the outdoors are great ways for family members to enjoy each other. These positive interactions and memories build a foun-dation for good communication, patience and tenderness when families face crises.
