From the Pastor’s Desk

My dear parishioners, Happy New Year! In a couple of days, we will ring in the New Year 2020. As we look back to 2019, we can count our blessings and take note of our shortcomings. Certainly, everything did not go according to plan. But in everything, we give thanks to God. On this Sunday, we honor the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. The Holy Family is offered to us as a model of all Christian families. We look up to them to grow closer to one another and closer to God. St. Joseph is the protector of the Holy Family. He took care of his family, fleeing to Egypt and searching for a safe haven for all the members of his family. To-day’s Gospel tells us that after returning from Egypt, Joseph and his family settled in Nazareth, away from the threat of Herod and his successor. But it was also God’s plan, in order to fulfill the prophecy according to which, Jesus “shall be called a Nazorean.” Mary was also the strength of the family through her docility to the Holy Spirit and her total faith in God. And the Lord Jesus was obedient to his parents, growing up in wisdom and age and favor before God and man (Cf. Lk 2:51-52). We turn to the Holy Family to learn from their example, and implore their intercession for our own families which face many challenges. St. John Paul II used to say that if we fix our families, many things in society will fall into place. In other words, if we fix our families, society will become better. In this New Year, we should take the resolution to make ours the virtues that St. Paul mentioned in the second reading of this Sunday liturgy. “Heartfelt com-passion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance against another.”

God bless you. always

Fr. Raphael

PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS

(Composed by the Most Rev. Nicholas DiMarzio, Bishop of Brooklyn) Lord of the Harvest, we petition you as you have instructed us to ask for more laborers to serve in the vineyard of Your Church. You have told us that the harvest is rich and laborers are few and we expe-rience this great need in the face of the challenge of the New Evangelization.

We ask the Holy Spirit to inspire young men and women to seriously consider vocations to the priest-hood and religious life. Help all of us to be effective instruments to encourage and support those whom you are calling to serve and lead the Church of Brooklyn and Queens in the future.

Lord, you told the Apostles to put out into the deep. We ask for the grace and courage to accept your call as we pray and work for an increase in Vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and religious life.

We ask this in the Name of Jesus Christ, the Great High Priest, Amen.
