ST HENRY son of Henry Duke of Bavaria and of Gisella daughter of Conrad King of Burgundy was born in 972 He was edu-cated under the care of StWolfgang Bishop of Ratisbon In 995 St Henry succeeded his father as Duke of Bavaria and in 1002 upon the death of his cousin Otho III he was elected Emperor
Firmly anchored upon the great eternal truths which the practice of meditation kept alive in his heart he was not elated by this dignity and sought in all things the greater glory of God He was watchful over the welfare of the Church and zealous for the maintenance of ecclesiastical discipline through the instrumentality of the Bishops He gained several victories over his enemies both at home and abroad but he used these with great moderation and clemency
In 1014 he went to Rome and received the imperial crown at the hands of Pope Benedict VIII On that occasion he confirmed the donation made by his predecessors to the Pope of the sovereignty of Rome and the exarchate of Ravenna Circumstances several times drove the holy Emperor into war from which he always came forth victorious He led an army to the south of Italy against the Saracens and their allies the Greeks and drove them from the country
The humility and spirit of justice of the Saint were equal to his zeal for religion He cast himself at the feet of Herebert Bishop of Cologne and begged his pardon for having treated him with coldness on account of a misunderstanding He wished to abdicate and retire into a monastery but yielded to the advice of the Abbot of Verdun and retained his dignity
Both he and his wife St Cunegundes loved in perpetual chastity to which they had bound themselves by vow The Saint made numerous pious foundations gave liberally to pious institutions and built the cathedral of Bamberg His holy death occurred at the castle of Grone near Halberstad in 1024 He was canonized in 1146 by Pope Eugene III
PRAYER God You adorned St Camillus Your Priest with the singular grace of charity toward the sick By his merits pour forth the spirit of Your love into us so that by serving You in our brothers here on earth we may safely come to You at the hour of death Amen

ST HENRY II Emperor July 13mdashPatron of the Disadvantaged
My Dear Parishioners
Today is the 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time in our celebration of the Lordrsquos Day In the Gospel the Lord Jesus returns to Naz-
areth the place of his upbringing there He finds rejection from those who knew Him Jesusrsquo teaching makes no effect on the
people but He is able to heal those who are sick and unable to help themselves FAITH is the missing ingredient within the
citizens of Nazareth and its absence impacts negatively on their lives as is testified ldquoSo He was not able to perform any
mighty deed there apart from curing a few sick people by laying hands on them He was amazed at their lack of faithrdquo
Faith is a wonderful gift which facilitates our trust in God and opens ourselves to embrace the tasks which are set before us
knowing that we will be accompanied by the Lord with His grace Faith is the blessing which we possess when we are con-
fronted with suffering The Apostle Paul wrote about this very thing to the Corinthians in todayrsquos epistle Paul recounts how
God has bestowed His grace upon him in his weakness so that he will be strong ldquoTherefore I am content with weaknesses
insults hardships persecutions and constraints for the sake of Christ for when I am weak then I am strongrdquo
In my many years of pastoral ministry I have seen countless numbers of individuals who have faced all sorts of problems and
challenges armed with the gift of faith Their courage and strength made them victors over the forces of evil Faith fortified
them in witnessing to the world that the Lord accompanies us with grace giving us what we need and when we need it
Our faith the gift given to us at Baptism is one in which we must take ownership We are called upon to avail ourselves to
every opportunity to strengthen our faith through prayer spiritual reading sacramental activity and works of service Parents
are responsible to providing these same opportunities to be present in the life of their children a task which is becoming ever
more difficult in our secular culture
Todayrsquos Responsorial Psalm reminds us of what our posture should be ldquoOur eyes are fixed on the Lord pleading for His
mercy Yes looking to the Lord every day for strength is what is needed Faith gives us the confidence to approach God for
His grace mercy and peace
These days of summer help to facilitate the strengthening of our spiritual life through relaxation and reflection while on vaca-
tion I hope you will not miss this opportunity and spend some quiet time in prayer spiritual reading sacramental activity and
acts of kindness
God bless you
