THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

The Anchor

The festivities of All Saints and All Souls are a bridge between time, our time, and Eternity, between our day-to-day ,

“banal” life and its meaning, its true value. Being able to balance both aspects of life—its eternal value and its finite, modest face—is the stuff of saints, like Saint Therese of Avila who had a vision of Christ while frying eggs in the kitchen of her convent. We are all familiar with the stereotype of the genius who is so focused on his research and studies that he becomes a comical character. Saints are not like that: they are usually both spiritual and practical: heads in heaven but feet well grounded. Often, reading the lives of the saints, we find ourselves asking how it was possible for them to live such full lives, doing so many things, talking and paying attention to so many people, and finding time for prayer and the sacraments, consistently every day, but it is true that when we are truly enthusiastic about something time seems to change pace and shift in peculiar ways. Saint Paul, in his 2nd letter to the Thessalonians, talks about the end of times and admonishes his friends and disciples not to be anxious about it. They were so consumed by the expectation and their fears that some of them had begun to postpone their normal life, their job, their family. That is the difference between saints and “non-saints”. The saints show us that even in their worries, even when they find themselves in times of trouble and trial, they lean on God, to find peace, to accept what they have to do, and what they cannot do. We are often overwhelmed by our worries because we lack the perspective of the saint: an eye always open on Eternity, which reveals how what worries us so much might not be as important as we think. The saint—and our loved ones who already passed to the Lord—among many gifts and graces, can give us the key to a life, less anxious and more focused on what really matters in the long run. Praying with the saints and with our deceased is praying with the full Church: the triumphant Church as well as the militant Church; here on earth and in heaven the work of the saints and of our loved ones is not done: they pray for us and with us too. The coming festivities remind us of all this.
