"Jesus wept" -John 11:35 Jesus weeping at the tomb of Lazarus shows the human side of grief. Grief comes from the depth of our love. Jesus gives us permission to grieve and wants to walk with us on our grief journey. "When you saw only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you."

Footprints in the Sand

GriefShare arrived at St. Irenaeus one year ago in June. Something commonly shared by attendees is frustration over being told they need to

move on or have been grieving their loved one long enough. How long is too long? There is no one answer to that question. What I have learned while walking alongside the grieving is that each grief journey is different and

unique. How long the couple was married, whether it was a child, how the loved one died, if it was a parent, all have meaning in the process. What I do know is that each person needs a safe place to tell their story, talk about their

loved one, and be offered empathy, compassion, and prayer. This is what St. Irenaeus offers through GriefShare. We have no magic that will instantly take away the pain. What we do have is compassionate listeners, education

regarding the grief process, prayer, and each other to lean on.

If you have lost a loved one, please join us for Loss of A Spouse and our next GriefShare cycle. May it be the gift you give to yourself during this

difficult time.

Register by going to www.griefshare.org, select find a church, choose St. Irenaeus Cypress, Ca., and register. Our Faith Community Nurse,

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY! YOU ARE UTTERLY AMAZING!

The title of this column is a term that I borrowed from my predecessor, Deacon Steve Germain. It is very appropriate to our congregation. I have been a parishioner here for 20 years and have observed the generosity of our parishioners through columns like this one and the Stewardship reports that are published every November. Now I have the privilege to see it first-hand every week. Nothing surpasses what I have seen during the last few weeks, after the Covid-19 pandemic was declared that forced our church to close its doors. Understandably so, our collection for the first couple of weeks dropped dramatically. Then we started live streaming Masses, not just on Sunday, but every day. Our priests made the appeal to continue your support of the church either via your envelopes or adopting online giving. You responded in grand style! Our collection has continued to increase weekly and has now reached 80% of the collections we received in the pre-pandemic period. More importantly, you have adopted the online giving practice. The number of parishioners using online giving has more than doubled in the last six weeks.

PSA UPDATE

As you may recall, our parish goal was stated at $350,000. The goal aimed to receive approximately $150,000 as a rebate to fund the parish renovation project. As of May 10, you have pledged $250,000 towards that goal and have made actual contributions of $123,125. Those are phenomenal results given the current economic situation we are all experiencing. Keep up the great work and thank you for your generosity!

Month  Envelopes  Online  Total  Average Weekly

February  $119,342  $21,391  $140,733  $35,183

KUDOS TO OUR CYPRESS POLICE DEPARTMENT

None of us like to think that Human Trafficking happens locally but this blurb from the April 2nd Cypress Police Blotter gives us reason to send kudos to our Cypress Police Department for being alert to its presence.

Human Trafficking—3:43 pm. Katella/Holder—From a call for service, officers and detectives investigated a case of human trafficking. The Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force responded to provide guidance during the investigation. A male subject was arrested and absentee booked at Orange County Jail.

At the April 22nd Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force (OCHTTF) ZOOM meeting, Sargent Reveles said that the male subject from San Bernardino was still in custody, he had been booked with $ 1M bail and efforts were being made to have San Bernardino add additional charges and the preliminary hearing would be sometime in May. He congratulated our Cypress Police Department on their handling of the case. Although the original call was for a vehicular incident, the officer followed his “gut” and called the OCHTTF with suspicion that human trafficking might be involved. It only took one phone call to prevent two juvenile females from a life of modern day slavery.

MORE GOOD NEWS!!!

We are grateful that despite Social Distancing, we’ve found a way to continue our support for the twenty-five Foster and At-Risk youth at Orangewood to whom we serve a homecooked dinner most weeks. For the moment, we are able to provide these youths, some of the most at risk for human trafficking, with three to four lunches per month. Donations would be gratefully accepted to help support our efforts. Please make your checks payable to St. Ire-naeus and write HM Bridge of Light in the memo line. These funds will be used only for these Orangewood meals.

Thank you on behalf of these most appreciative youths.

MRS. JENNIFER CIERLEY AND MRS. ELISA LILJEBERG KINDERGARTEN TEACHERS Mrs. Cierley and Mrs. Liljeberg have been teaching kindergarten together for the past five years. Both have taught at St. Irenaeus for over 10 years. They are both alumnae of the school and have taught each other’s children. They enjoy working together and are continuously finding inspiration and fulfillment in creating new curriculum for their students, especially at this time! They are a great creative match and fuel one another’s passion for teaching. Their mutual respect and love for the students continues to drive them to strive for excellence each day.

MRS. MICHELLE MARSHALL TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN TEACHER

Mrs. Marshall has been teaching TK at St. Irenaeus for the last two years and has a message to her students: “I am so proud of you and all of the learning, growing,

and playing we did together this year. From our morning prayer at the start of each day, to our clean up song

“Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and closing prayer at the end, we made so many memories each and every day. I hope that Transitional Kindergarten will always

make you think of the friendships you made, the many songs we sang, and the fun we had while learning. I feel

very lucky that I was able to be your first teacher at St. Irenaeus and I’m excited to see what the future holds

for you. You and your family will always hold such a special place in my heart! “

NUESTRA COMUNIDAD HISPANA

MAY 17, 2020 l SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER l PAGE 10
