  • Amazing Parish Tour Recap This is the second week in a row I am writing my bulletin article on an airplane, this time on the way home. There was so much that happened during our visits to 2 amazing parishes that I feel like 2 weeks has passed since my first flight last week. I would like to say a few words about each of the parishes we visited, one west of Detroit, the other north of Baltimore.

Christ the King, Ann Arbor, MI. The most striking thing about this parish is the number of religious vocations. For example, over 30 men have been ordained to the priesthood from this parish. That’s a big number, especially considering it was only established as a parish in 1997! Most parishes in our diocese are lucky to have one priest ordained in the last 20 years. I also met a number of parishioners who are recognizable names on the national Catholic scene.

What made the biggest impression was a prayer service Friday night. For one, there were over 100 people gathered to pray on a Friday night. Two, there were opportunities to be prayed over, and at one point I had different parishioners praying over me. Their words gave me peace. Afterwards, one of them said, “You have a lot of weight on your shoulders, but the Lord is with you.” I was amazed because “burden” was the word that came to mind while they were praying over me. Thank you, Lord, for that gift!

Church of the Nativity, Timonium, MD. I felt very welcome at this parish; the pastor even invited me to celebrate the Sunday evening Mass. What a blast! The staff was so generous in meeting with us in the midst of their very busy schedules. They were very generous, and I am very grateful.

What made the biggest impression was a small group meeting with 4 parishioners, all of them young dads. Meeting in small groups is a foreign concept for many Catholics; basically, it’s a way to live your faith with fellow parishioners outside of Sunday Mass. To put it simply, small groups is where a big church gets personal. What struck me the most was our prayer at the end of the meeting. Typically, if a priest is in the room, Catholics defer to him: “Father has to pray.” Each of these dads said a few words in prayer. “Thank you for this evening. Thanks for our visitors. Please help this or that person, Lord.” It was awesome to hear dads lifting each other and their families up in prayer.

This was a whirlwind tour, so I’m happy to be back home. The next trip I take is a mission trip to Honduras in July. After that, I don’t have anything planned until family vacation in February, 2019. Thanks for the prayers for safe travels. If you see me at Mass this weekend, your prayers worked!

    Peace,Fr. Matthew

Congratulations Deacon John Vu Deacon John Vu was ordained as a transitional deacon during ordination ceremonies on May 26 at the Cathedral in Baton Rouge. He is scheduled to be ordained a priest in May of 2019. Please pray for Deacon Vu as he begins the final year of his journey to the becoming a priest.

Quotes from Metanoia Manor Residents Sr. Norma Nunez gave an update on Metanoia Manor at a recent meeting of Women in Spirit in Baton Rouge. She shared the statistics about human trafficking and the role of Metanoia Manor to help girls rescued from this horrible existence. Two quotes from girls that have received shelter and help from Metanoia Manor has this to say about their experiences:“Metanoia Manor is a comfort from my nightmares. Being here I can break the chain of addition. Here I can strengthen my education, my faith and my family, helping others while I am here at Metanoia …Finally I can make my own choices.” The second quote from a resident - “I’ve never had peace in my life, peace in my mind, my body and soul but here I’ve found it. I have swum in the deepest of waters but now I walk along beaches with a seashell in my pocket for every step I take toward my peace”. Your donations helped to fund the programs that made the difference in these girls lives!
