Happy New Year!! We hope that you had a wonderful Christmas break and are now getting back into the swing of things with your “normal” routine. This is also the time of year when sickness tends to “spike” as we are returning to be around our school and work families from the break. We want your children to be at school, but need them to be healthy. January Chapel Offerings

The chapel offerings for January are going to support MOST ministries. Mission Opportunities Short Term is a

group that spreads the love of Jesus through short term mission trips. For more information check out their

Mrs. Goodspeed Thank you all for your support of our Christmas programs. The kids did a great job and surpassed my

expectations.

Thank you also for the many many gifts of appreciation! I truly appreciate your thoughtfulness and generosity!

There is no schoool NEXT MONDAY (January 16th) in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The school

and daycare are closed.

We have added another new friend to our class! We welcome Camille Snelling. All of the children had a great

return to school. They were excited to see the new set up of our room and meet Mrs. Knobloch. We were so

proud of all of them! The new children acclimated easily and the returning students were great friends to the

new children.

As we perfect writing our names, children will now sign in each day with their regular tracing name plate AND

a blank name plate. As you work with your child at home, reinforce that letter are formed top to bottom and we

write from left to right. We reinforce left/right discrimination several times throughout our day.

A hard copy of the snack calendar was sent home last week. If it is your child's snack week, please provide

snack only on the days your child attends. For example, if your child attends Monday-Friday, you are

responsible for snack all five days. If your child attends on only Monday, Wednesday, Friday, just bring snack

for those three days. We have a full sized refrigerator and can store perishable items if needed. We have 16

friends and two teachers.

Children may bring an item for Show and Tell on Wednesday or Thursday. Items that coincide with the theme

or nursery rhyme of the week are encouraged!

We are currently in short supply of Kleenex and paper towel at St James. Even-numbered grades have been

asked to send in Kleenex and odd-numbered grades have been asked to send in paper towels. Kindergartners

can bring in Kleenex, it is of the greatest need! If you could help out, it would be greatly appreciated!

Next Tuesday, January 17th, should be our 100th Day of school. To help celebrate, each kindergartners needs

to bring in a collection of 100 items. They can bring in whatever they like and all items do not have to be the

same thing!

Reminder: There will no hot lunch on Tuesday of this week due to a funeral and no hot lunch on Wednesday of

next week due to the Science Fair.

Because its not on my radar..I always forget to mention the science fair. The Science fair is Wednesday,

January 18. It is a requirement for the even grades and optional for the odds. Please let me know this week, if

your first grader is thinking of participating. I am sorry that I didn't think to mention this earlier.

THIS WEEK...choose 3 spelling words and write them in a sentence. (3 different sentences). Then write the

that have more than 3 words, punctuation, spacing and assist with spelling other words correctly. We will do 3

words for 3 weeks, 4 words for 4 weeks and then 5 words until the end of first grade. **I just noticed, I copied

this note but didn't changed "next " to "this". The first spelling sentences are due THIS week, Wenesday,

January 11.

Math: greater than less than The math vocabulary is "greater and less", "fewer and more". I use words like

larger, bigger, smaller, but also always go back to the math vocabulary. This is tricky for some. Our magic

word is to...tens, ones..we write it under the number to help us. Ordering random numbers

Handwriting: We have reached the point where most of us are progressing at our own pace. If handwriting

needs to be corrected, the corrections take place before moving on in the book.

Our reader is "Reading Street" with a beaver on it. If it comes home, and it will just review what we have read.

It is ok to read ahead. I am looking for practicing those reading skills.!"The Farmer and the Hat." There is a

mural that we do the skills on as well as some other tasks, then there are 3 pages(phonics, new vocab, I can

read) that we always do to start the unit. Then we read the story.

I think 100 day falls next Tuesday. Start thinking about 100 collection that the first graders can bring to school

Chapter 6 in math on Thursday. The Science Fair is next week on Wednesday. Students should be well on their

way to getting these done and working on their displays. These may be brought to school at the end of the day

on Tuesday between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m.. The Battle of the Books will be on Thursday, February 2nd. Students

have spent a lot of time reading the books for the battle. We have 4 teams of 5 students participating in the

battle. Make sure that the permission slip and t-shirt money is turned in to the teacher as soon as possible.
