Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Last week we heard John’s version of the calling of the
first apostles. This week we have Mark’s version. Both of
these versions are countered by Old Testament reading of
others being called by God. Last week that person was
Samuel. Jesus had to call him repeatedly to get his atten-
tion. Samuel would eventually get it and go about doing
God’s will. Today, in our Old Testament reading, God
calls Jonah. Unlike Samuel, Jonah understands exactly
what God wants him do. Jonah’s problem is that he
doesn’t want to do it! Where are we between Samuel and
Jonah? Do we, like Samuel, have trouble hearing God
over the noise of the world? Or are we more like Jonah,
saying I understand, I just have other things I’d rather do?

REFLECT AND RESPOND TO SCRIPTURE
First Reading:
Although initially reluctant to be one of God’s prophets,
Jonah was ultimately successful in getting the Nine-
vites to repent of their sins. When do you find yourself resisting God’s
will?
Second Reading:
In trying to awaken a sense of spiritual urgency, Paul taught the Corin-
thians that Christ’s return was imminent and that, “time is running out.”
How can a sense of urgency aid one’s spiritual life?
Gospel:
In Mark’s account of the call of the first disciples, Simon (Peter), An-
drew, James, and John immediately answer Jesus’ call to follow him.
How would you describe your response to Jesus’ call in your life?
POPE FRANCIS PRAYER

John the Baptist Church Parish Offices if you have any
questions or concerns.
HOLY COMMUNION at HOME
The COVID pandemic has caused many of our pa-
rishioners to remain home and miss out on the op-
portunity to receive Eucharist. To celebrate the
birth of Jesus Christ, Deacon Jim will bring Eucha-
rist to the homes of those who cannot make it to
Christmas Mass. This will be offered on Christmas
week and may be extended to the week following
Christmas, depending on the number wishing to
receive Eucharist at home. Please call the parish
office to schedule a visit.
St. THOMAS AQUINAS
Thomas Aquinas was a 13
th
century Dominican and is con-
sidered one of the great teachers of the Christian faith. His
most famous writing is the multi-volume Summa Theoliae,
his last and unfinished work, still used in seminaries for the
instruction of men entering the priesthood. When asked
why he did not finish this monumental work, he replied: “All
that I have written seems to me like so much straw com-
pared to what I have seen and what has been revealed to
me.” Thomas Aquinas realized that words cannot express
the wonder and awe of all that God has given us.

BLESSING of THROATS
Wednesday, February 3
rd
, is
the feast day of St. Blaise, pa-
tron saint for diseases of the
throat. We typically bless
throats on the weekend near-
est to the feast day. This year
we will bless throats next
weekend, January 30-31, fol-
lowing all Masses. Because of
COVID, we will not place the traditional crossed candles on
the throat. Fr Healy and Deacon Jim will be stationed on
either side of the front pews. Those wishing to have their
throats blessed will come up the side aisles, beginning from
the front of the church, keeping a safe distance from the
person in front of them for the blessing. Father and Dea-
con will wear masks, as will all who come forward for the
blessing. After the blessing is received, exit will be down
the center aisle and out the front door of the church.
CONVERSION of St. PAUL
Monday, January 25, is the feast of
the Conversion of St. Paul. Paul was
a devout Pharisee and persecutor of
Christians until he was knocked off his
horse by the blinding light of Christ,
and became the Apostle to the Gen-
tiles, establishing churches throughout
the Roman Empire. True conversion
is something that affects our deepest
being, and it can only happen when we open ourselves and
allow the light of Christ to become part of who we are.
